From the editor From a media perspective, Supercars is the gift that just keeps on giving. And, journalists were bestowed another present when it came to light the Newcastle 500 would not return in 2024. While half the Hunter community celebrated that fact, the other 50% quickly turned to the social platforms, particularly Facebook, to air their grievances. To be honest, I’m neither for nor against the event. The city looked sensational as the venue on national television. But, from a sporting point of view, the Newcastle 500 was as exciting as watching paint dry. The street circuit was too narrow and there were very few opportunities for drivers to showcase their skills. So, here’s my solution. Why don’t City of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie City, Port Stephens, Cessnock City and Maitland City councils get together and find a suitable location in the region? And, instead of one LGA profiting from the millions of dollars on offer, they all receive a slice of the pie. A neutral location, built to the right scale and size, would then attract bigger motorsport events moving forward. Everyone wins.

PACC unveils exciting new additions

T

here was an air of anticipation at Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) when the facility unveiled its

latest multi-million-dollar additions. In fact, phrases such as “an exciting new chapter” and “start of a new dawn” were bandied about by Cessnock City mayor Jay Suvaal, Cessnock MP Clayton Barr and Hunter MP Dan Repacholi, to name a few attendees, at the former Grace Bros site.

The official opening of the exhibition and art spaces, as well as significant accessibility upgrades, at a cost of more than $3 million, is the culmination of many months of planning and construction. TRAVEL

TRAVEL TIPS WITH MATT & BRETT

H

The magic of holiday travel

olidays and travel have been an important part of both of our lives from an early age. It didn’t start with exotic destinations but we both looked forward to our annual family pilgrimages

to the beach. For me (Matt) it was our two weeks every January on the Gold Coast. It was never a flash apartment on the beach, we stayed mostly in the back blocks in low rise, but there was always a pool and the one night out at a fancy restaurant (well, I think it was actually the Bavarian Steakhouse for anyone who remembers that). For Brett, it was packing up the Jayco pop-top and heading to Port Macquarie or Ballina for the annual dose of caravan park life, catching up with the same families each year for lazy BBQs and waiting for the sun to go down so the game of spotlight could start.

“That’s what makes travel so magic and precious, the memories that money just can’t buy.” The funny thing is that although we looked forward to them, the holidays didn’t seem like much at the time. However as time moves on, we look back so fondly on the memories of the experiences had on those childhood holidays. That’s what makes travel so magic and precious, the memories that money just can’t buy. Long after the kids forget what latest fad they got for Christmas, they remember what happened on the holiday that followed. Now as adults, we are lucky enough to get to travel far and often, but the feeling is the same. That experience that you plan and save for creates the memory that is priceless and lasts forever, or at least long after the tan has faded and the credit card has been paid off. It’s a magic that we remember to be grateful for all the time and is what makes travel such a joyful experience for us. Have you got your next holiday planned? Maybe it’s time to grab a cocktail and dust off the travel bucket list. 10

You talk a lot about mindset and visualisation. Can you explain that? If I'm doing a low-level display I'll walk my mind through the track to the point where I'll do it with correct orientation. I'll do it outside, so I've got the sun on me in the right orientation. If I'm doing a show that's east-west based with a crowd line, I'll walk east west so I've got the sun, I've got all the surroundings and I'm visualising. I'm walking it, and I’ll know where the dam wall is, where the road is, where the trees are.. I'm seeing it all as if I'm doing it, to the point where I'll be doing the G-train (acceleration) and my heart rate comes up. I’ll start sweating while I'm walking through either the track or the display. I’ll also visualise anything else in life that I think is important PHOTOGRAPHY ENDORPHIN MEDIA, AUSTRALIAN MOTOGP; MATT HALL RACING ARTICLE REBECCA RIDDLE

because you do better when you go into something with knowledge of what's going to happen. Even if it's only been from your imagination, you're then not surprised at anything that happens because you've thought it through in such detail. I still do it every single flight. I think people in sport stop themselves from succeeding because they can't believe they could be standing on a podium, so it doesn't come true. They sacrifice their potential, and they choke in the final, all that sort of stuff, because they can't believe they will actually be successful. It’s something I do, and it sounds egotistic but it's not, it's just part of the process. I visualise standing on a podium, spraying champagne and hearing the national anthem and tearing up, and I go through that emotion so that as I'm competing, I'm on the road to that, as opposed to getting there and going, ‘oh, I can't wait until this is over’. I have total belief I am going to win. Are you a perfectionist? I am. I get frustrated by people that aren't. No matter what I fly; I fly helicopters, I used to fly hang gliders, I would have already prepared it and I know exactly what's going to happen. I know the altitudes, I've looked at the winds, and I'm going to try and do it perfectly. What about the things you can’t control? Part of doing it perfectly is having a plan, but then you've got to execute on what you see. I've planned it, I've looked at the weather and the winds and all that sort of stuff, but once you get airborne, it's now real and you don't care about the things you can't control, that's another part of being a pilot really.

njoy being bored now, because you’ll never know boredom again. This little nugget is arguably the most confusing piece of advice

I’ve received during pregnancy. At the time of writing, I’m 38 weeks

and have been on mat leave for a whole five days. While I wouldn’t say I’ve reached “fury” on the Boredom Richter Scale, without my regular routine of work and fitting everything else in around that, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling a little untethered to the natural state of things. As a lifelong sufferer of the condition (that I totally made up) called “boredom fury”, being bored is not something I cope well with. It’s when an activity is so mind-numbingly void of any entertainment value that you genuinely get angry about it. This is the difference between doing nothing by choice and being bored – that feeling that there is definitely something better you could be doing right now. You’re stuck in a meeting that should’ve been an email with a colleague droning on and on about something you either a) already know or b) don’t give a rat’s about – but the way your mama raised you forces you to sit there and endure it as opposed to doing what you

really want to do which is scream “LIFE’S TOO SHORT! I’M BORED AND OUTTA HERE!” So you silently hold on for dear life, trying desperately to remember that breathing technique for managing stress until whatever it is you’re trapped in is over.

“Enjoy being bored now, because you’ll never know boredom again.” If this does not resonate with you at all, I envy you fiercely and well done for finding the joy in the mundane. But, how is someone like me meant to appreciate boredom over these next few weeks… before my world is consumed with something so all-consuming… like having a baby?

A full range of skincare and treatments to compliment your aesthetic journey including skin tightening, pigmentation, acne, oxygen therapy hydration and the biggest IV nutrient therapy lounge for your inner health and wellness.

four times already. Thank God I keep changing my mind on whether the swaddles should be folded or rolled – because that’s eating up a good portion of my 2 o’clock hour. I have honestly appreciated 99.9% of the advice and wisdom that parents have shared with me over this journey, but this one – the one about boredom, if that’s one you like to dish out – my advice back to you – scrap it!

LOUI THE KING CHARLES CAVALIER X FRENCH BULLDOG Loui is a bundle of energy and curiosity. With his expressive eyes and floppy ears, he’ll melt your heart in an instant. Loui loves to explore and has mastered the art of backyard escapes. Whether it’s digging under the fence, squeezing through small gaps, or just finding creative ways to climb over obstacles, he can’t resist the call of adventure. Favourite activities: Backyard escapades, fetching games, zoomies, belly rubs, exploring new sights and scents, and sunbathing in the grass. Favourite toy: Loui’s Rattly Rhino has been with him since the beginning of his rescue pup days, offering a sense of familiarity and security. Favourite treat: Loui’s eyes light up at the scent and taste of meaty dog treats. Natural meat strips, beef dog treats, pigs ears – you name it! Special talent: Balancing on his back legs to get food is impressive. newcastleweekly.com.au
