BEHIND-THE-SCENES
June 2022
2022-2023 Season In a recent article published by the Bay Area Reporter, playwrights in our next season discuss their excitement for the upcoming shows. Nick Malakhow, writer of A Picture of Two Boys, discusses his upcoming world premiere at NCTC. As we look towards our next season, Malakhow describes how NCTC is, ‘looking to populate the world of queer theater with different voices.’ Nora Monahan, writer of Aunt Jack, which will open our season in September, says: "It definitely is really rewarding and exhilarating for me as a younger emerging nonbinary, transgender, polyamorous playwright to be given a space in this community and this kind of institution. It really means a lot," said Monahan. Richard Mosqueda, director in residence this year says, ‘New Conservatory is that unique place where queer people go in solidarity and to commune with another.’ You can read the full article here.
Let Us Be Perfectly Queer Give OUT Day Is June 30!!! Give OUT Day is the only national day of giving for the LGBTQ+ community and it isn’t just about how much we raise, but how many donors show their support. Each gift of $10 or more helps us towards winning an extra cash prize – having the greatest number of supporters (although we already know that we have the greatest supporters). This year your gift goes even further thanks to a generous 2:1 gift match from Board Member Emeritus Robert Holgate. You can TRIPLE your impact by giving during the month of June! Your support makes theater possible! Donate by visiting us at www.giveoutday.org/nctcsf
Meet the Team Putting the Conservatory in New Conservatory
Meet Jamie, the newest member of the NCTC Education team! Jamie joined our team this year as our Education Program Administrator. Bio: Jamie received her B.A. in Theater and minor in Anthropology from Temple University. Jamie’s theater background includes acting, stage management, house management, dance, and ensemble-based devised work. While in college, Jamie immersed herself in theatre, LGBTQIA+ studies & activities, political organizing, and social/cultural learning while studying abroad in India. Post-college, Jamie has a deeper focus on confronting systems of oppression in the United States, particularly as it pertains to race, gender, and class. Jamie loves to dance, sing, draw, write, and collaborate in her free time. She also loves supporting grassroots theater and performance art in the Bay Area!
Why NCTC? First, I missed live theater and working in a space that dives headfirst into creativity and performance-based projects. Second, in my previous life in Philadelphia, I worked with young people in after-school and summer programs, and I have been eager to work with youth again because I enjoy connecting, creating, mentoring, and being a resource for them. Third, I was excited to provide structural support to NCTC’s Education programs and contribute my administrative and project management skills to grow and expand our opportunities for youth. What part of NCTC’s mission is most inspiring to you? I’m most inspired by NCTC’s values rooted in community, education, and activism. I hold these values close to my heart and strive to be a community centered person who uses education and activism as vehicles for positive social change. How do you hope to help us grow and reach more students? Hopefully in many ways :). NCTC is a valuable resource to the theater community and young people, and the way to reach more students is to meet them where they are at through social media and in person opportunities. I hope to build out our social media presence (including TikTok :)), expand our Teaching Artist network and expertise, and host community events that draw in new and existing families to NCTC.
