from the Founder & Artistic Director

After more than a year of deep uncertainty and

political uproar, the grey clouds are beginning to part and the light of affirmation in humanity is poking through to warm us all.

As our host Polly Amber Ross proclaims at the start of the show, welcome friends, lovers of the arts, supporters of justice, dignity, and equality, and most especially esteemed members of the Trans community to New Conservatory Theatre Center’s TransNational Cabaret featuring Trans excellence from across the country and celebrating Trans joy. To the lay the groundwork for the project, we adopted the metaphor of crafting a beautiful necklace. While each bead shines brightly in its own right, when united with the others its collective radiance is unparalleled. Each of our six Trans artisans were given a “bead” in the form of a question around which to craft their cross-disciplinary performances. Defining moments of Trans love, family, identity, history, body awareness, blazing trails and rejoicing in community quickly sparkled into view. While we certainly do not presume to speak for the entire Trans experience, our performers are sharing their own stories in their own words through their own unique art forms. This streaming performance represents NCTC’s second micro-commission program featuring queer artists – the first being The Mighty Queer Virtual Variety Show which premiered last December. For this show, director Richard Mosqueda returns and joins forces with Chris Faye Steele (AKA Polly Amber Ross) to curate an extravaganza of Trans delight featuring artists from both the West and East Coasts. With abundant gratitude, it is my honor and privilege to present NCTC’s TransNational Cabaret for your viewing pleasure. Happy Spring and Happy Pride everyone!

W E LCO ME

from the Executive Director

Thank you for joining us for this celebration of the TransNational Cabaret! It has been a real pleasure connecting with all of these talented artists to create an event that is so personal in its storytelling and national in scope. If there is a small silver lining to the shutdown, it is the pathway our online productions have opened to both artists and audiences from outside the Bay Area. So, if you are tuning in from a long distance away, welcome – and we hope to meet you in person some day! We are feeling pretty optimistic here at NCTC these days. Spring is in the air, vaccines are in the arms, and it looks like re-opening is in our future. We expect to rollout our plans for the Fall in June, so stay tuned! Before we are back to live performance, there is still more virtual programming to share with you in the coming months: we will be revisiting the intrepid troupe of the Bay City Theatre one year later in season two of our podcast In Good Company, brought back by popular demand. We hope that you, too, are looking at brighter days ahead. Thanks for welcoming us in, and enjoy the show!

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT “My grandmother, my mother and I believe that when song, dancing and ceremony stop so does the earth.” - “Kanyon Coyote Woman” Sayers-Roods In pursuit of New Conservatory Theatre Center’s ongoing mission to effect personal and societal growth, enlightenment, and change, we’ve learned the importance of acknowledging the original inhabitants of what we now know as San Francisco. We recognize that Ramaytush was the first language of this land as spoken by its original peoples, who are the original stewards and understand the interconnectedness of all things, maintaining harmony with nature since time immemorial. Our theatre is located on stolen land of the Ramaytush Ohlone Peoples, the original peoples of what is now the San Francisco Peninsula, and the greater Bay Area is the ancestral territory of the Miwok, Yokuts, Patwin, and other Ohlone to whom we owe a collective debt. We have directly benefited from being settlers on this land and we are privileged to call it our artistic home. Through our own research and in-depth conversations with local Indigenous Generalized Specialist “Kanyon Coyote Woman” Sayers-Roods, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of the many travesties towards Native Americans over hundreds of years that have led to a history of displacement, gentrification, and cultural erasure which informs the context and demographics of our area to this day. Storytelling is the core of theatre. Being unable to gather at NCTC during this time has highlighted how essential it is that we share the story of the land we occupy. This statement is one small step in recognizing the original stewards of this land and paying our respect to these Indigenous communities while educating our patrons, artisans, teachers, and students. More importantly are our actions that follow, which will include but are not limited to: uplifting local Indigenous communities, businesses, and artists, offering space and resources to Indigenous organizations, and being inclusive in the stories we tell and how we tell them. Colonization is ongoing and so must our efforts be to engage, repair, and learn EpisodesWe 3 and 4 were you brought tothe you by as an organization. encourage to visit reference links here to better understand the legacy of the Ramaytush Ohlone people and the history of this serving the community since 1890. land. Please join us in acknowledging and honoring their ancestors, their elders, and their communities.
