WELCOME
Welcome to New Covenant! We believe God is good all the time and we gather on Sundays to celebrate His goodness. We are really glad you have decided to join us today! As you look through the loop, we trust that you will quickly find that New Covenant has something for you, your family, and your friends. Our hope is that as you take the next step into the New Covenant community and get involved, you will begin to see that NC is more than just a Sunday Morning celebration; it is a family of everyday people following Jesus together to bring hope and change to the world - one life at a time. If you have questions about anything feel free to speak with someone at the Welcome Centre (located in the lobby) or contact the church office. Our Contact info is on the back page.
Our Purpose:
Celebrating God’s Goodness!
Hypocrites (and Other Sinners) Welcome at NC! It was at the gym during a discussion about faith that a friend explained to me the reason he doesn’t go to church, “Because it is full of hypocrites.” From his observation, church people don’t live out what they profess to believe. This is a very common sentiment. I also think it is accurate.
Our Mission:
Helping one another to Encounter God, be Equipped by His Word, and Empowered by His Spirit to live a life that Celebrates God.
As we concluded our workout and discussion, I asked my friend if he wanted to stop for something to eat at a fast food restaurant on the way home. He got my point: hypocrisy isn’t a church problem, it is a human problem. So the church is full of hypocrites; myself included. However, rather than keeping me from church, my hypocrisy is one of the many reasons I go to church. What my friend failed to recognize is that the church isn’t a group of perfect people but a group of people being made perfect. The church is full of broken, hypocritical, back biting, sinful people. But hopefully by God’s grace it is full of people who are less broken, less hypocritical, less back biting and less sinful than they were yesterday. Philippians 1:6 says, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” All of us are projects that God is working on. We all find our names written on His ‘to do’ list. Some of us are further along than others, but all of us are still in process, and will be until Jesus returns. Somehow the church has failed to effectively communicate this to our culture. Instead we have
communicated that you have to be perfect, or at least pretend to be perfect (hypocritical) before you can be a part of our group. Jesus on the other hand was known as a friend of sinners (Matthew 11:19). Jesus came to the rescue of the adulterous woman (John 8) while she was still an adulterer. Jesus became friends with Zacchaeus (Luke 19) while he was still a crooked tax collector. Jesus had dinner with Matthew (Matthew 9) while he was still considered a notorious sinner. We need to be honest with ourselves that becoming like Jesus is an ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in us and while the work continues He still calls us friends (Romans 5:8-11). Here are two reasons why this is important. 1) Admitting we have a problem is the first step in overcoming the problem. When we recognize that we are still sinners in need of grace we are more apt to turn to God for help in changing us into the individuals He created us to be. 2) We become more accessible and attractive (less hypocritical) to those who are far from God. When we recognize we need God’s grace we are more likely to extend grace to others who need it as well. When we are honest about our own grace dependancy, others in need of grace will be more comfortable exploring Jesus and faith among us. My hope is that in everything we do we will recognize and communicate our continuing dependance on God’s grace and in doing so God will continue the good work of making us like Jesus that He has already begun in us. In turn, like Jesus we will become more attractive to the unchurched and will become better equipped to help them find the grace upon which we all depend.
