EMMA JEFFRYES | Fifty In 1997 Emma Jeffryes, a new and entirely unknown artist, brought her first ten paintings to New Craftsman Gallery in the hope that they might consider taking one. The gallery took all ten, and all but one sold out in the same fortnight. ‘I took that as sign,’ says Emma, ‘that I should move from London to St Ives and paint full time.’ In 2005, New Craftsman offered Emma her very first solo exhibition, and its success positioned her as one of St Ives’ most promising painters. Twelve years on, her work is amongst the most well-loved in contemporary Cornish art, and is considered synonymous with the town of St Ives. Now, in 2017, we are delighted to present a specially created collection of new works in celebration of Emma’s 50th bir thday and her 20th year in St Ives. ‘Having fallen in love with St Ives twenty years ago, I am still every bit as passionate about this area as I always was, and I continue to try and convey that feeling in my work. This collection, while based pictorially on St Ives, West Cornwall and the sea, is also about exploring the scope of my painting, and demonstrates a more experimental, multi-faceted approach to my practice. Bold, bright colour remains of great impor tance to me, but I am becoming similarly absorbed by more subtle, muted tones. I have given much more thought to simplicity of line, shape and space whilst attempting to introduce looser, more fluid mark making, layers and texture. My fascination with boats takes centre stage in this exhibition.

Some of these works are based on the resplendent fishing trawlers of Mousehole and Newlyn Harbour, and St Ives’ elegant ‘Boats in The Bay’ event of September last year, an occasion when serenely beautiful old sailing vessels gathered to sail around the bay with wonderful, moustached old gents at the helm. Similarly, I continue to be inspired by Falmouth’s truly spectacular 2014 Tall Ships Regatta, the largest gathering of boats of all types and ages that you can imagine, emerging from Falmouth on a beautiful day to parade before awe struck crowds of thousands and then set sail for the thrilling race to London. Sights like this remind me that I am utterly blessed to be able to spend time studying and painting this beautiful part of the world, and I hope to communicate my love of Cornwall in this celebratory collection of works.’ Emma Jeffryes, 2017
