Emma Jeffryes | Land and Sea
‘This part of Cornwall, both land and sea, provides such an abundance of visual splendour that I am compelled to translate it into painting. At this moment, I find myself fixated by certain themes and have returned to them again and again, exploring the beauty of each subject, experimenting with different techniques and attempting to achieve greater depth in my work.
At the end of last summer during a family bike ride, my husband and I came across The National Dahlia Collection at Varfell. I was completely mesmerised by the spectacle of it, the rows and rows of joyfully beautiful Dahlias in every variety you could possibly imagine. They were surrounded by
a dense wall of trees, which created a wonderfully warm and sheltered environment, and beyond the tree tops was the splendid silhouette of St. Michaels Mount. Captivating scenes like this, from the delicate petals of a Dahlia flower, to the raw movement of a crashing Atlantic wave, inspire my work.
