In this new collection of paintings, entitled ‘The Lie of the Land’, Davies explores the contrast between the underlying structure of the landscape, and the endless seasonal change that affects its surface. Combining a vibrant palette with swiftly applied brush stokes, poured paint, and shimmering detail, these paintings respond to changes in the light, the turning of the seasons, bursts of floral colour, and the cycle of Atlantic weather systems on Cornwall’s beautiful far west landscape, which is affected daily by rain, wind, sun, or completely hidden by cool sea mists, even in the heat of high summer.
