Emma Jeffryes is known as a painter of seascapes and coastal scenes, but like all of us, her experience of Cornwall in 2020 was changed significantly by lockdown and all its restrictions. The permitted daily walk became her only source of inspiration, along the country lanes and coastal paths around her home in Carbis Bay, and accordingly this new collection of paintings responds to the abundance of natural splendour we witnessed during the spring and early summer of Lockdown #1. As roads were silenced, air traffic ceased and the Cornish weather dazzled, Emma’s attention was taken by the spectacular unfolding of spring in these unusual circumstances. Her paintings take us with her along lanes and past hedgerows overflowing with white hawthorne and yellow gorse, where primroses, snowdrops, bluebells, luscious green foliage and wildflowers merge to create a symphony of colour against a backdrop of clear blue skies and still waters. These beautiful paintings celebrate a unique and wondrous moment in nature, one that accompanied the darkest and most difficult months of our recent history.
“It was around a year ago that we were all thrown into turmoil, as the pandemic took hold in a way that no one could have envisaged. It impacted us all in different ways, and for me it sparked a new direction within my work. The world came to a standstill just as spring arrived, resulting in the most spectacular visual splendour, and the fact that the pace of life had slowed so much made the unfolding of spring entirely more noticeable and abundant. The branches of trees became laden with heavy clumps of beautiful blossom, ferns were slowly uncoiling, and the birdsong seemed especially vocal and harmonious: both spring and summer seemed a profoundly more enhanced experience. I have always walked and cycled in order to explore new subject matter for my paintings but having to stay local gave me an intense focus on local things. Typically, my creative attentions have been on the sea, but now painting the land has become a new and refreshingly different fascination, and I feel these new themes will be appearing in my work for years to come.” Emma Jeffryes 2021
