ROLLERS AND BREAKERS Twenty years on from her very first exhibition of paintings, held at the New Craftsman gallery, few contemporary artists are as closely associated with the town of St Ives as Emma Jeffryes. The abundance of brightly coloured flowers in spring, the fresh coastal colours of early summer, the triangular patterns of rooftops against rich blue skies and the impossibly bold shapes and colours of harbour boats in the summer sun are enduring themes in her work. The vivid, ever changing light and lively atmosphere of this famous seaside town are rendered with real affection in Emma’s distinctive, rainbow coloured palette while her broad, airy compositions speak of the endless open spaces that define West Cornwall’s unique landscape. Her style is distinct from other painters, combining as it does the historically important naïve style that has been associated with St Ives painting since Alfred Wallis and the high set horizons and luminous colour of contemporary Cornish painting. Perhaps most importantly, in their perceptive simplicity Emma’s paintings exude a pleasing familiarity, mirroring not so much the visual, but the sensory experience of time spent in St Ives. ‘There is an infinite amount of stimulus in St Ives and when I work I have to somehow tame this richness in my own mind, to refine it into finished pieces. The more I study the sea, the beach, the boats, birds and flowers, the more I want to delve beyond the obvious, to simplify the things I perceive right down to the bare bones.’
