JEREMY ANNEAR The paintings of Lizard-based painter Jeremy Annear reflect the artist’s early exposure to St Ives abstraction and the profound influence of European Modernists such as Braque, Miro, Picasso and Gris. Annear’s highly abstracted paintings respond to both the formal structure of still life and the natural constructs and delineations of the Cornish landscape, combining richly textured surfaces of muted primary and secondary colours reined in by sober tones of black, white, grey and taupe. His early art education included grid analysis of historical painting and he developed a finely tuned understanding of the balance between the constructive and narrative elements in works of art. An artist highly educated and engaged in theoretical and philosophical discussions of modern and contemporary art, Annear’s powerfully composed oil works on board and canvas have their roots in the linear inheritance of late modernism. Paintings in this exhibition, which include new and previously unseen works from the last three years, continue his exploration of the themes of land and geometry, and of the artist’s sense of place within the physical world.Walking daily within the West Cornwall landscape, Annear observes the convergence of horizontal and vertical details and their effect on the balance, atmosphere and perception of self and place. Trained at Exeter College of Art, Jeremy Annear was a member of the Newlyn Society of Art and the Penwith Society of Artists, served on the council of management of the Newlyn Gallery and continues to exhibit regularly in London and Europe.
