Will Calver

Rising young painter Will Calver graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Falmouth University in 2019. Combining classical figuration with a freer hand, his stilllife alla prima paintings explore the quiet presence of everyday objects, and are made from direct observation and drawings.

At an unprecedented time in history, when recent challenges, separations and losses have brought about a greater appreciation of life’s simple details, this exhibition presents an opportunity for contemplation, beauty and stillness. It also parallels, perhaps, society’s renewed appreciation of traditional artistic disciplines and the innate power of single forms, a trend that is also reflected in the rise of contemporary craft.

Spacious compositions and an extraordinary skill for interpreting light and form give his paintings of quince, lemons, peaches, pebbles and ceramic cups a beauty and power rarely seen in contemporary art today.

Since graduating, Will has exhibited at the London Academy of Representational Art and at Porthmeor Studios St Ives. This exhibition at New Craftsman Gallery is his very first solo show.

We are very pleased to present three Royal College’s most promising new Ceramics and Glass MA graduates. They have been selected amongst the best new talent for 2020 for their exceptional work and uniquely focused practice.

hojung kim

South Korean artist Hojung Kim graduated with an MA in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art in 2019. Her work is inspired by ideas of global diversity, which she expresses through the movement of colours across surfaces and within a variety of forms. Works in her ‘Flow’ collection create a relationship with the space in which they sit, and with one another, and explore the harmonious drift of shapes and colours across a shared space. Hojung has exhibited her work in the UK, Germany, South Korea and Japan.

“ I have developed a new material language that expresses my identity and voice in the form of vessels. Through the exploration and investigation of materials and production processes, I have developed the Flow collection. These vessels build a relationship with the space in which they sit and with one another. I aim to make objects that have an awareness of the space which they occupy, through the subtle movement of colours within a variety of forms.

Utilising a combination of traditional and contemporary methods, I have developed the surface qualities of these objects, which explore flow and harmony drifting across the spaces.�

chloĂŠ bell

Chloe graduated with an MA in Ceramics from the Royal College of Art in 2019. Her practice is research led with a focus on materials and aims to forge physical and sensory connections between people and the landscape from which their culinary ingredients are sourced.

Glazes used in her various tableware collections, for example, have been developed from waste oyster shells, mussel shells or seaweed ash. Chloe has exhibited her work at the British Ceramics Biennial, and Plate Up at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen.

“I study people and the landscapes from which they work and live in. When you depend upon and live within one landscape you develop a unique relationship with the land. For this collection I spent time at Porthilly Farm. I traverssed the bitter windswept shore to study the colours, tones and forms found there. I heard from oyster farmer, Tim Marhshall about the livelihood of oyster farming and brought back to the studio surplus oyster shells that sat in a heap on the farm�.

Alice graduated with an MA in Ceramics from the Royal College of Art in 2018. Her original ceramics forms are defined by incredibly complex surface textures and are inspired by both street furniture and architecture. Objects she encounters on her daily commute are the starting point for individual ceramic works, which are then grouped together to make curious imaginary scenes. Alice was awarded the Wedgewood Prize at the British Ceramics Biennial. She has exhibited at the V&A, Tate Modern and Hauser & Wirth.

Her work is about a consideration of the everyday, taking the time to notice the unseen things in our environment and re-evaluating them. Her latest ceramic work incorporates her fascination for noticing common street objects, passed by in our everyday lives. She investigates how they can transcend into unusual and extraordinary objects, which form a new abstract landscape.
