Great Weather, Great Conditions, Great Golf
#1 GOLF pubLiCatiOn Spring 2010 Convention
We are just 8 weeks into spring but the weather and the golf season have been in mid summer form for well over a month. We have been blessed this year with some of the best early course conditions ever in New England and temperatures that have been well over seasonal averages. The combination has been a shot in the arm to the golf industry throughout the northeast, which in past years has not fared so well during the spring season. This also bodes well for two of New England’s newest golf courses that have opened this year amidst some of the most tenuous economic times for golf. Meadow Brook Golf Club in Richmond RI opened its door in the last month and unveiled a great new Rulewich / Fleury designed facility that now is the longest course in the state at nearly 7500 yards from the tips, it is magnificent. And in Northbridge, Ma Shinning Rock Golf Club opened it doors with one of the most dramatic course designs in the region cut into hills overlooking the Blackstone River. Inside you will find reviews of both new facilities, we wish them both the best in the years ahead and welcome them to the family of New England Golf. At the International Network of Golf Conference in Pinehurst NC in May, New England Golf Monthly was chosen “The Best in Conference Publication Award” for 2010. We are very proud of the achievement voted on by industry leaders from all over the world. I want to offer a special thank you to the staff at New England Golf Monthly, our contributors, writers and especially you, our readers for making our publication the best of the best.

New England Golf Life by Katharine Dyson
Discovering
Eastern Connecticut There is every good reason to head to eastern Connecticut for golf and fun, a place where you have choices. Southeastern Connecticut and its coastline is punctuated by a bevy of wonderful waterfront restaurants, lighthouses and museums while Northeastern Connecticut set in rolling wooded hills is the Nutmeg State's "quiet corner", a more gentle laid-back, less hectic place.
Southeastern Connecticut Most tourists flock to the southeastern part of the state where the sea and Connecticut River add up to a recipe for fun, sun and recreation. Running from the mouth of the Connecticut River and Old Saybrook up to Stonington, the coastline is home to world class attractions such as Mystic Seaport where you can climb aboard the three-masted Charles W. Morgan whaleship and explore the 19th century recreated village or get fishy at the Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration. In Groton, visit the Submarine Force Museum and the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear submarine. Heading up the Connecticut River Valley to Essex and Haddam where possibilities for after-golf activities abound, find the Gillette Castle, William Gillette's ingenious medieval fortress wanna-be. Kids of all ages will love the Essex Steam Train and double-decker Becky atcher Riverboat which take you on a nostalgic ride through the Connecticut River Valley www.essexsteam-

traincom while those who have enjoy musical theater will find much to like at the 2nd Empire-style Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam where productions like Annie Get Your Gun and Carnival are on this year's program. www.goodspeed.org
Where to Stay. In Mystic Country there are several comfortable and convenient chain hotels like the Hilton Garden Inn, Whaler's Inn, Ramada Inn and Holiday Inn Express. If you prefer something less predictable, try the 67-room Inn at Mystic. Stay in their Greek revival mansion, Gate House or Motor Inn then cool off in the outdoor pool and enjoy cocktails and dinner at the Flood Tide Restaurant. Smack in the center of Mystic, the country-style Whaler’s Inn, a comfortable historic hotel, is within a wedge shot of the historic Bascule Bridge, the Mystic River and shops while romantics dig the classy 18-room
Inn at Stonington overlooking Stonington Harbor where décor is fresh, sophisticated and king-size beds, balconies, fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs raise the bar for romantic ambiance. Rates from $150 include a continental breakfast. www.innatstonington.com
Ross layout starts out fairly benign but before you even reach the stunning new holes (#15, #16 and #17) running along the ames estuary, you are hooked. Pequot Golf Club in Stonington is a pretty, historic track dating from 1958 where Jack Nicklaus set the course record (65) in 1966. e club offers a number of stay and play packages with local hotels. en there's Quarry Ridge, Portland, which makes you wonder if you are in Connecticut or Vermont with its massive rock outcroppings, stone work, ledges and scary elevations.
Hungary? In Mystic, we like the trendy Bravo Bravo where large windows look out to Main Street and the menu includes local fish, pastas and more. For historic flavor, try the Daniel Packer Inne or go where the locals eat and drink in Noank at the Seahorse Tavern, your old classic hole-in-the-wall with a great chef. Noah’s in Stonington is a find for foodies who savor dishes made from scratch prepared by the chef-owner and for pizza, it’s Mystic Pizza (Yes, the place Julia Roberts made famous). Up the Connecticut River a bit, Essex, once a bustling shipbuilding and seafaring town, today harbors trendy shops as well as the Griswold Inn (“e Gris”), a town institution welcoming guests since 1776. Down a pint or two in the historic tap room, then settle into one of the 31 guests rooms, many with fireplaces and four-poster beds.
e northeastern part of the Nutmeg State tends towards easy, relaxed and inexpensive whether you're talking about things to do or places to play. We suggest you bunk in at the Tolland Inn where Susan and Steve Beeching, owners and innkeepers, have combined decorating and furniture-making skills in the furnishing of their country home which has been a fixture on the town green since about 1800. Each of the seven rooms is different but the king suite upstairs is begging for attention. It has a two-person sunken hot tub, down comforter, fireplace, private entrance, and king canopy bed.

Where to Play. At Fox Hopyard Golf Club in East Haddam designed by the Roger Rulewich group, elevated tees and deep wide swales create drama yet the scenery and generous bail-out areas eliminate posttraumatic stress disorder. Traditionalists will appreciate Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, the closest thing you’ll come to a Scottish-style links course in this part of the world. Dating from 1898, this classic Donald

Where to Play. River Ridge Golf Course in Griswold, just a tad over ten years old, is set on gentle rolling land overlooking the Quinebaug River. Built on land once occupied by an apple orchard, River Ridge has little water but some fun downhill shots. Going north the Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam (formerly the Putnam Country Club) has undergone a total redesign by Mark Mungen. e length was extended from 6,169 yards to more than 6,900 yards along and mounding and bunkers were added along with the construction of a handsome new clubhouse. Calling George Costanza! BP shoots golf balls to seal leak in oil well top kill effort
As any ardent “Seinfeld” follower well knows, hitting golf balls into the ocean is bad for whales. Smacking the little white orbs into the Gulf of Mexico, however, may end up helping the environment, as BP continues to struggle with its oil spill “top kill” plan to plug the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Um, golf balls? Yup, those dimpled orbs you regularly dump into golf course hazards around the world. e most trusted ball in golf. Now, sixteen years after Seinfeld’s George Costanza saved a whale’s life by plucking a Titleist from the mammal’s blowhole, BP resorted Wednesday to shooting golf balls and other pieces of junk such as tire shards into its deep-sea oil well to stop an environmental hazard of unmatched proportions. e idea is to plug a busted blowout preventer and stop the massive oil leak that has fouled the Gulf Coast with more than five million gallons of oil, according to published reports. e well has been dumping thousands of barrels of oil a day into the Gulf for more than a month, when the piece of equipment called a blowout preventer broke and Transocean Ltd.’s Deepwater Horizon oil-drilling rig
exploded and sank. e disaster killed 11 workers. e top kill procedure, which BP has yet to term a success since it began Wednesday, involves pumping thick fluids, or “drilling mud,” into the blowout preventer to halt the leak, according to Reuters. Junk shot. Here’s where the golf balls come into play. BP began pumping golf balls and shreds of rubber into the gear ursday but had yet to determine the result of its efforts. Why golf balls? It seems that golf balls are small and robust enough to fill holes between the other crap, like rope and tires, which BP is using to plug the leak, according to Slate. After all, if a Titleist Pro V1 can stand up to a John Daly tee shot, it should certainly be able to plug an oil spill, right? Apparently so. Slate.com noted that golf balls could withstand 2,000 pounds of force from a golf club. Just add golf balls and stir. Click here to read Slate’s detailed and entertaining take on why golf balls make the perfect “junk shot” ingredient. As of Friday, by the way, BP had not requested any products from Titleist, according to a spokesperson from Massachusetts-based Acushnet, which makes Titleist golf balls.

East Coast golf resorts
put you on permanent vacation
Who hasn’t dreamed of being on permanent vacation, with a couple of golf courses (or more) just a short cart ride away from your well-outfitted condo or town house? Well, the dream is quite possible within a day’s drive of New England, and at prices that might surprise. Here are a few of my favorite resorts and golf communities:
Bay Creek Resort & Club, Cape Charles, VA Leave Providence, RI, at 6 a.m., catch the ferry from Cape May to Delaware, and you should be on the first tee by mid-afternoon. e resort’s 36 holes include a tricky layout by Arnold Palmer and a tougher routing by Jack Nicklaus, adorned by tall-grass-edged bunkers, small greens, and a mighty wind blowing off the Chesapeake Bay. Condo prices begin in the mid $200s.
Kingsmill Resort, Williamsburg, VA e Pete Dye River Course is the main attraction in the resort that beer built (Annheuser Busch), but Arnold Palmer and Curtis Strange contribute two other sleek layouts. Nine holes by Tom Clark may have the best river views of any of the resort’s courses, maybe the best of any par 3 course in the nation. Town homes and condos begin in the $200s.
Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms, SC e green on the dramatic 18th hole of the Links Course (Tom Fazio) has fallen into the Atlantic twice in the last two decades, but resort operators and vacationing golfers are undaunted. Fazio’s Bay Course is a nice fallback, even if it lacks the churning seas backdrop
12 | New England Golf Monthly | June 2010
of the Links’ finishing holes. An extra benefit: e great city of Charleston is just 15 minutes away. 1 BR, 1 BA condos start in the low $200s.
Kiawah Island, SC What golfer of a certain age can forget Bernhard Langer’s missed six-foot par putt in 1991 at Pete Dye’s Ocean Course; the bogey kept the Ryder Cup from returning to Europe. Green fees at the Ocean Course may be beyond the means of most mortals, but solid nearby alternatives abound (with nameplates like Nicklaus, Player, Watson, and Fazio attached). 1 BR, 1 BA villas begin in the mid $200s.
Grande Dunes, North Myrtle Beach, SC Don’t even think about changing your shoes in the parking lot of the Members Club (Nick Price), one of the few private clubs on the golf-loaded Grand Strand. Next door, the Grande Dunes Resort course (Roger Rulewich) uses the Intra-coastal Waterway as backdrop and hazard. Real estate is pricey for Myrtle Beach, with a 3 BR, 3 BA condo listed at just under $500,000. But, oh, what a buffet of golf nearby, 110 courses within an hour!

Ouimet Fund Honors Annika Sorenstam at 61st Annual Banquet By Laura Ebrecht
e Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s 61st annual banquet on May 11th at Copley Place Hotel honoring Annika Sorenstam for her Lifelong contributions to golf was truly an uplifting, soul fulfilling night. It was truly a privilege to be among the 1,460 in attendance to embrace a Ouimet student scholar deliver an articulate, well-expressed speech, applauded with a standing ovation, on how golf and the scholarship have helped her attain her dreams. Founded in 1949, e Fund is one of the largest independent scholarship organizations in New England. e organization dedicates a great deal of effort to assist the next generation in building their character to the highest level through education and golf. e Fund was established to honor Francis Ouimet who is considered the “First American Golf Hero” and one of the most important figures in the history of golf. His victory in the 1913 U.S. Open at e Country Club in Brookline, MA, where he had grown up as a caddie, was a turning point in American Golf. Says the World Golf of Fame, “Ouimet's stunning triumph captured the imagination of sports fan across the globe, sweeping away the notion that golf was a stuffy game for the old and rich.” He was responsible for inspiring creation of numerous new courses, including many public courses. His impact on golf is detailed the in the book by Mark Frost (also the 2005 Disney movie), e Greatest Game Ever Played. Previous honorees of The Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf include Arnold Palmer, Gene Sarazen, Ben Crenshaw, Curtis Strange, Ken Venturi & Eddie Lowery, George H.W. cobsen, Barbara & Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tom Watson, and honored with the 15th Award this year was Annika Sorenstam. Annika Sorenstam, one of the greatest athletes and female golfers of all time, the only female golfer to have shot a 59 in competition. Over the course of her dominating professional career, she won 90 international tournaments, ranking her at the very top of the all-time list. She won 10 Major LPGA tournaments, won both LPGA Player of the Year and LPGA Leading Money Winner 8 times. In 2003, she completed the LPGA Grand Slam and was inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Richard J. Barrett, Ouimet Fund President and former Ouimet Scholar said, “We are very pleased to be able to award 261 scholars $1.325 million in scholarships in this difficult financial environment which has impacted everyone.” It brings e Fund to over $20 million in total awards over the years, to which everyone gave a grand applause. Peter S. Lynch, an Ouimet Scholarship alumnus was presented the Richard F. Connolly Jr. Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Lynch was a caddie at Brae Burn Country Club and a recipient of the Ouimet Scholarship while attending Boston College, graduating in 1965. 43rd Ouimet Tournament at International Oaks and Pines and Woodland
Norton, MA --e Forty-third Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament will open at e International’s Oaks Course on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, continues at e International’s Pines Course on ursday, July 29, and concludes at Woodland Golf Club on Friday, July 30. Mr. Connolly explained that the Ouimet Memorial would again have three divisions in 2010 – the Championship, Eddie Lowery (seniors), and a limited field women’s group. He said the last visit to the International in 2003 is memorable in that four-time champion Frank Vana, Jr. of Marlboro shot an amateur course record 67 at e Pines in the first round while Jim Renner of Foxboro had an overall course record 65 at e Oaks in the second round. Renner went on to win the event and turned professional later that year. Mr. Connolly went on to speak of the 2009 championship in which 22 year old Matt Parziale held off former Ouimet champs Frank Vana, Jr. and John Hadges. Mr. Parziale, the 2009 MGA of the Year, turned professional after the 2009 season. Carter Fasick of Indian Meadows became the first to win backto-back Eddie Lowery Seniors Division titles while
Wallace Hamerton of Olde Barnstable edged 11 year old sensation Megan Khang of Harmon Club in a playoff to win the Women’s Division title. e special women’s invitational has one round – the final round at Woodland. e Ouimet Tournament is a 54-hole stroke play amateur invitational, for players with handicaps of three or less. It is played on a rotating series of courses in Eastern Massachusetts with the field cut to low 40 and ties for the final round at Woodland. Proceeds of the event benefit the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. e Ouimet Memorial started in 1968 after the death the preceding year of Francis Ouimet. Ben Murphy of Norfolk won the inaugural. Champions over the years have included prominent national-level players such as Ed Tutwiler (1969), and Jerry Courville (1973). Ouimet Champions who went onto the PGA TOUR include Bill Mallon (1972), Bruce Douglass (1976), Brad Faxon (1980), and Fran Quinn, Jr. (1987). The Oregon Trail
Often praised higher than Pebble Beach at half the price, Bandon Dunes’ ocean link courses provide a taste of Scotland without passports. Every course is a rigorous walk enriched with natural dune bunkers carved by God and gorgeous yellow gorse, of course, imported over a century ago from Scotland. Bring your bump and run game as the difference from fairway to green grass is very subtle. anks to Freeman eriault, acclaimed with 46 holes in one and John Gunby, PGA Pro, for sharing their Bandon Dunes award trip, and check marking our bucket lists. Our stay was extended at “A Bandon Inn”, Al Greenfield’s golf lodge perfectly created for groups up to 12. Minutes from the courses, with a surreal hilltop view, guests entertain themselves in the theater and poker rooms, or relax on the deck, fireside, where burdens be gone and golf tales be told. He hooked us up at Bandon Crossings Golf Course, a great inland layout with plenty of deer and trees to shape each fairway. In sheet rain, and high winds, we previewed the new, Old MacDonald course, with caddy Dan who warned against umbrellas. By the second tee box it was folded during the drive, yet a gust launched it skyward. A 100 yard dash just saved it from blowing over a cliff. Caddies know. Since the ladies’ tees were yet unmarked, we fancied ourselves as Pete and Alice Dye, selecting the optimum platforms. Designer Tom Doak studied with Dye and created gargantuan greens here, averaging 15k square feet! Speaking of ladies, they are conspicuously missing and since they are most welcomed, female golfers should take note and enjoy this beauty. A journey along the coast indulges senses with a

His secret to success is getting a big idea that everyone says is not possible, and making it happen. See his video at www.tetherow.com Oregon is truly a sports person’s paradise with skiing, kayaking, golf and some of the finest trout/salmon fishing off the west coast. e views are breathtaking, rain or shine; just pack for both. Good Looks on the Course What’s Hot: Innovative Accentuations by Elle Brec
Accessories not only tie an outfit together, but they also serve a small and potentially important purpose. Whether blocking the sun, holding apparel in place, carrying belongings, or protecting feet, all of these activities could have an impact on a person’s golf game. ere are, of course, facets to accessories that do not serve any purpose besides aesthetics, and on the other side of the spectrum, some accessories that go above beyond their designed purpose. As far as aesthetics go, large belt buckles with logos or designs and bright colored belts are fresh right now, but it may not be the preference of a more sophisticated golfer who wants a simple, sleek, black or brown leather belt. A Fedora or Trilby hat is trendy, which is the hat with a pinched, indented crown and a narrow brim upturned in the back. While this style hat is fashionable and one of my personal favorites, a longer brimmed baseball style cap may block the sun better the short brim of the Fedora. For products that take it to the next level, there is the Green Friendly Golf Belt from ReadyGolf.com. It is an adjustable belt that clamps down to the desired size. It is made out of leather, and best of all, the tips of the belt serve as divot tools and magnetic ball markers. e belt also comes in black, brown, white, and pink. e L.B. Belt Company uses fine Italian leather or genuine snakeskin for their belts. eir uniquely designed golf ball caddies that attach onto the belt and carry two balls, a tee, and has a magnetic ball marker for easy access to everything a golfer needs. Ahead Headgear crafts a golf hat with a ball marker that magnetically attaches to the clasp on the back of the hat. What differentiates Ahead is they specialize in customization. These hats can be

embroidered with any design and it comes with three ball markers that can be custom engraved with a variety of logos. Now in this day and age that we know the affects of the sun, we must choose how we want to respond to that knowledge. Some golfers wear SPF 50 along with UV protective clothing and a hat. Iconic Sport creates lightweight Microfiber stretch jersey knit fabric that has a full boat of technical properties: it includes moisture wicking, low-pill, moisture-release, wrinkle resistance, UPF 50+ and anti-microbial properties. Not only does Iconic Sport construct their shirts from this fabric, they also use this fabric for their del Sol UPF 50+ protective sun-sleeve. A sunsleeve is very lightweight and breathable so it does not feel hot if the sun is beating down hard. Instead, the sun-sleeves provide almost a cooling affect because they wick the moisture off the skin and protect the golfer from sunburns or over heating. On the other hand, pun intended; if you enjoy the sun, you may not want to have tan lines from gloves. Evertan has provided a solution, women’s tan through golf gloves available in a variety of colors and designs for those who like to catch some rays while on the links. Whatever your style preference, make sure your accessories are consistent with your outfit. Accessories should all be one color to put it quite simply; if you choose to wear black it should be a black hat, a black belt, black socks, and black shoes. Most people know it is a fashion faux pas to wear a black belt with brown shoes. If you choose to be bold and go with colors, be sure to take some tips from not only one of the greatest golfers, but also the greatest accessory coordinator, Camilo Villegas.

NEGM Course Review Two great courses opened in the last month in New England, Shinning Rock in Northbridge MA, and Meadow Brook in Richmond RI. Here is our staff review, now tell us about your round at these two new wonderful facilities at www.mynegm.com
Massachusetts Shining Rock Golf Club, Northbridge MA e newest addition to the New England golf landscape, Shining Rock Golf Club in Northbridge, MA, has been receiving accolades for its dramatic layout since opening on April 23. An 80-foot high sheer cliff of granite stands prominently near the 16th green, offering a beautiful panorama of the Blackstone River Valley. e abundance of mica found in the glacial rock causes the formation to glisten in the sunshine shortly after rain. It proved to be a landmark for early settlers to the valley, including the Nipmuc Indian tribe, thus coining the phrase Shining Rock. e evolution of the golf course has also become a story unto itself. In 2000, the course was first considered by a local developer to be built along with 350 units of housing, which the town of Northbridge fully endorsed. Soon after the first hole (No. 18) was built in 2004, financial difficulties ensued and the project went into foreclosure. e course eventually became a design project much in line with the hilly landscape which it sits on. According to construction site superintendent Patrick Sullivan, there were only three holes that could actually be shaped. Dirt was in heavy demand for the remaining holes. "We were short 1 million yards of dirt," said Sullivan. We brought in 100 trucks a day with dirt from Boston for 2 years. It's a real integral part of the setting as to how this course was built." Construction was ongoing over three years at 3-to4 holes per year with the course substantially completed by 2008. e end result is a stunning, 165-acre tract carved out of rolling landscape that affords sweeping vistas with chiseled beauty. A major component of this par-72 golf course is shorter par 4's and longer par 3's. From the blue tees
22 | New England Golf Monthly | June 2010
by Bob DiCesare (6,210 yards), the shortest of the par 3's is 176 yards while there are four quirky par 4's measuring slightly less than 300 yards. e teeth of the course is holes 2thru-6, which are narrow and hilly with multi-tiered greens. e longer back nine opens up considerably and the greens aren't as severely sloped. A make-orbreak score will definitely come from around the greens. A good short game will go a long way in mastering this layout. Both Hopkinton CC and Shining Rock GC are managed by Niblick Golf Inc., which is owned by Tim Gordon. Hopkinton CC charter or full-golf members receive unlimited access to tee times at Shining Rock, while other Hopkinton membership categories receive reciprocal playing privileges for a modest greens fee. "It's a hybrid," said Gordon. "With the private component of Hopkinton (CC) having access over here, we're trying out a regional cluster to enhance the overall appeal. e addition of Shining Rock Golf Club to the membership of Hopkinton (CC) puts our membership as one of only four private clubs in the state, and the only club in Metrowest, to offer 36 holes of golf to their members. "Our goal is to accommodate a significant number of players," said Gordon, who is looking to host outings and charity tournaments. "We believe we have a very special golf course that should prove to be exceptionally popular with New England golfers." For more information and tee times, visit www.shiningrock.com or call 508-234-0400. For membership information, contact Tim Gordon at 508-735-7540. Bob DiCesare is the golf writer for e Enterprise in Brockton, MA, and he is also a member of the International Network of Golf.

PowerBilt is the only golf equipment manufacturer that supports the face of their golf clubs with Nitrogen gas. e company cleverly deemed their irons and woods by the name Air Force One about a year ago. In 2010 they made even more improvements and have officially released their Air Force One – Air Foil line of irons, hybrids and woods. e new and improved line, Air Foil, has been improved in many ways according to PowerBilt President, Ross Kvinge. “Because the face is supported by Nitrogen gas the club face can be much thinner which expands the sweet spot. e results are clubs that increase your distance and improve your accuracy. e feedback has been very rewarding from golfers of all skill levels and the media,” said Kvinge.
e “wow factor” of PowerBilt’s patented nitrogen-charged technology truly comes to life in their new irons. ese irons are longer than any iron on the market and they have the statistics to prove it. It doesn't matter how many golf lessons you take, how many hours you practice on the range, or how much hi-tech equipment you buy...Unless you develop core mental skills like managing your inner voices, visualizing shots and rising to challenges you won't ever realize your full potential as a golfer. You'll never really know just how low your scores could go. Even the best players in the world had to master these mental golf skills before they could become champions... Control Your Clubface, Control Your Game e player that can control the face of the club can control the ball. Control the ball and you can control your game. When any player swings the club, the face of that club can and should be trained in order to produce the desired shot. For a swing to fully compress the ball, the motion the clubface makes through impact should be a continued closing of the clubface alignment. Most players fall victim of trying to keep the clubface pointing to the intended target. is is called “steering” and will only produce a weak shot that will fall to the right of the flag.
Create A Better Chip Shot I routinely get asked to help students with their upand-down chipping. Most of what I see is the club head passing the hands through impact (see figure A). is motion makes it nearly impossible to consistently control the distance and accuracy of the shot. e result is typically a skulled or chunked shot. To create a consistent result, we need to fix the position of impact. A good impact position is where the hands are slightly ahead of the club head at impact (see figure B).
Figure A.
Understanding the function of the club will help you in producing a “full roll” of the clubface. Place a club in your fingertips with the club shaft hanging vertical to the ground. Slowly rotate the grip of the club taking notice of the sweet spot of the club. You will then see that the shaft of the club will rotate around the sweet spot. Now make a few slow motion swings with the club in your left hand and start to become aware of the fact that the club shaft and its rotation. e reason I suggest doing this with your left hand is that the left hand controls the face of the club and the left wrist will control the club head. A “flat” left wrist is a must in order for the club head to “lag” behind the handle of the club. Next, hit a few short pitch shots and play around with this new feel. Try some with the feel of a full rotation, then a few that you do not allow this to happen. You will soon discover the difference in how the ball feels and reacts to the two different types of clubface control. Once you begin to have confidence in the shorter strokes you can begin to make fuller motions. Each swing should be an education of the hands that must be trained to control the clubface. Now go out and practice, take dead aim and control your game!
Figure B. Try this simple practice method to produce a reliable chipping stroke.

myNEGM Lesson Tee by Steve Riggs
Learn about the golf swing from the best
by Steve Riggs
Every summer, golfers in New England really do get a gift from the ‘Golf Gods’. is summer is no exception. Four events offer golfers of every skill level the chance to enjoy competitive golf at the highest level while offering up the chance of a lifetime, namely to learn about the golf swing and the game from some of the very best in the business. is year the New England tournament schedule is as follows:
Travelers Championship PGA TOUR event, TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, CT., June 21-27
CVS Caremark Charity Classic Rhode Island Country Club, Barrington, RI. June 27-29
ING New England Golf Classic LPGA Futures TOUR, Wintonbury Hills Country Club, Bloomfield, CT., July 12-18
Deutsche Bank Championship PGA TOUR event, TPC Boston, Norton, MA., September 1-6. I have always encouraged clients to seize learning opportunities that are available by attending a professional event. e chance to imprint the golf swing motions of top players can be priceless to your golf swing and game improvement. Golfers benefit immeasurably by seeing well executed golf swings repeated in real time. Sometimes the benefits are totally unconscious. To better understand, consider this. A child can watch golf swings on TV or at a driving range then pick up a golf club and almost instinctively swing the club and hit the ball. A little planning will make your day at the event both exciting and educational. 1. Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour watching the players warm up. It just could be the best learning experience of your golf career. I suggest you start your day at the practice range before going to the course to enjoy the play. 2. Know how to watch a golf swing for maximum impact. Watch the golf swings peripherally. Stare at an object, say, on the range and beyond the players. is allows you to see the entire swing like a picture. e simple suggestion to ‘watch the head’ will let you see what the head is doing through the swing. (Practice this and you will be amazed how much of the swings parts you are able to see.) Don’t stare at that part of the swing you want to observe you may find you miss what you are trying to watch. 3. Decide what part of the swing interests you. is could be based on problems you are having, say, with transition, weight shift, swing issues in the down swing, your alignment, and so on. 4. Keep it simple. Trying to watch too much will be self defeating. Keep it simple and know you can only see one thing at a time. 5. Do your research. Know what swing faults you are trying to overcome and pay particular attention to differences between your issues and the professional swing motion. You just might find that what you thought was a problem actually is not. 6. Focus. Don’t try to watch every golfer warming up. Pick out a couple as they arrive at the practice area and ‘stick with them’ visually. e reality of the swing motion will be imprinted on your system. is process feeds your unconscious mind and system much like a child watching golf swings. Next month on mynegmLesson Tee, I will show you how to tap into the information you have loaded in. Now, go enjoy the event.

NEPGA Profile Bob D's NEPGA Pro File
Patrick Boucher by Bob DiCesare TPatrick Boucher is in his glory. In fact, you could say he's caught up in the wonder of it all. As head golf professional at Lake of Isles Golf Club near Foxwoods Resort Casino, Boucher is dealing with multiple hands involving every aspect of the golf operation. It includes an 18-hole private course (South) for members, an 18-hole public access course (North) for daily fee and resort guests, the Hank Haney Golf Academy, an additional golf retail store in the casino, the Lake of Isles Golf Experience inside the lobby of the Great Cedar Hotel, as well as dealings with celebrities. "Ray Allen of the Celtics is a member here – real nice guy," said Boucher. "(Actor) Michael Douglas gives me a call when he's in town. Dwyne Wade (Miami Heat), a lot of the (New England) Patriots, have all been good when they're here for celebrity or charity events." A native of nearby Norwich, CT, the 30-year-old Boucher first started working the bag room at age 15 while attending Norwich Free Academy and then became assistant pro at the old Pautipaug GC (now Mohegan Sun CC). A graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University (no golf team) in 2002, Boucher also worked as an assistant pro at Wampanoag GC in West Hartford before landing the head professional position at Lake of Isles in 2006, one year after the club's opening. "It was a great opportunity for me, being a local guy, to work for Troon Golf and because of the uniqueness of the facility. is is the only Troon facility to have an off-site retail store." ere's always something going on at Lake of Isles, and that's the kind of energy and excitement which he thrives on. But there's one tournament that is very special to Boucher's heart, more than any event staged at Lake of Isles. Boucher is chairman of the 21st annual Daniel A. Boucher Memorial Tournament at Norwich GC, where his father was head professional when Patrick was a youngster. "It means a lot to me, continuing that tournament in his name and providing scholarships to deserving student-athletes," said Boucher. Teeing it up with The Jimmy Fund By Jeff Palopoli
Ask any New Englander about e Jimmy Fund and they’ll most likely mention the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and its connection to the Boston Red Sox and the Pan Mass Challenge. Often overlooked is the strong connection the Jimmy Fund has to the golfing community through its Jimmy Fund Golf Program. Since the 1950s, volunteers have coordinated golf tournaments to benefit the Jimmy Fund. Over the years the number of tournaments grew and the Jimmy Fund Golf Program was born in 1983. is year the Jimmy Fund Golf Program will benefit from 160 tournaments, with a goal to raise $6.4 million. e majority of the tournaments are taking place within New England, but some are as far reaching as Oregon and Texas. In May I had the honor to tee it up in a tournament hosted by the Jimmy Fund as a generous token of appreciation for all of its major sponsors for 2010. e event was held at e International Golf Club in Bolton, MA on a seasonably cool and windy day.
Playing alongside Tim Barry, the Jimmy Fund Golf Program’s Assistant Director, his passion for what he does and for the game of golf was readily apparent. e evening’s emcee was former Patriot’s lineman Joe Andruzzi, a recent cancer survivor himself and the keynote speaker was Dr. James Bradner, an oncologist with the Dana Farber Institute. As golfers, we certainly all struggle at times with our game. However, listening to the evening’s presenters reminded me of how trivial my struggles on the course are when measured with the real struggles cancer patients, survivors, and their families face every day. e bright spot in that struggle is an organization like the Jimmy Fund, giving cancer patients life saving victories and the hope for an ultimate cure. Curtis Cup Returns to Essex County Club
By Bob DiCesare
e 2010 Curtis Cup is coming to Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA, on June 11-13, and the event only adds to the amazing history of this classic, New England style course. Essex CC opened in 1893 and became the sixth member club to join the United States Golf Association. e U.S. Women's Amateur was held there in 1897 and 1912, and famed golf course architect Donald Ross spent three years there as the club professional. During his time, he redesigned almost all of the holes and lived in a house just beyond the second hole, which still stands today. e Curtis Cup is a biennial USGA event contested by women amateur golfers, one eight-woman team from the United States and the other from Great Britain/Ireland. It is the women's equivalent to the men's Walker Cup competition. e cup for the Curtis Cup, a silver, Paul Revere Bowl design, was officially introduced in 1932 by Harriot and Margaret Curtis, sisters who were members at Essex CC and between them won the U.S. Women's Amateur four times (including Margaret's triumph at Essex CC in 1912). Its inscription reads "To stimulate friendly rivalry among the women golfers of many lands" and was presented to give momentum to the competition following the event's first matches in 1932. The 1938 Curtis Cup was held at Essex CC, as well as the 1995 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur. This year's Curtis Cup will be the 5th USGA championship contested at Essex CC.
42 | New England Golf Monthly | June 2010
e Curtis Cup is also a homecoming for Noreen Mohler, who was named captain of Team USA in February, 2009. A Woburn, MA native and former member of Andover CC, the 56-year-old Mohler was a member of USA's victorious 1978 Curtis Cup team at e Apawamis Club in Rye, N.Y. Mohler was a semifinalist in the 1975 U.S. Women's Amateur and also played in five U.S. Women's Opens before stepping away from golf for several years to raise her family and concentrate on business affairs in Bethlehem, PA. In addition to guiding a team of five teenagers and three women in their early 20's, Mohler will also feel some addition pressure. She's scheduled to throw out the first pitch at the Red Sox-Royals game on May 27. "I need more practice for that than swinging a golf club," kidded Mohler. "Essex is a challenging course – New England style," added Mohler, a former three-time Mass. Women's Amateur champion. "I love the grass, and it's a compact, walking course. e greens will be tricky, so it's definitely a placement course. You want to keep the ball out of the heather." Tickets for the 36th Curtis Cup on June 11-13 are now available. Single-day tickets cost $30 each and a three-day pass is $75. To order tickets, visit www.2010curtiscup.com. Molori Unplugged by John Molori
When ex-Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor was arrested in early May for third degree rape and patronizing a teenage prostitute, I could not help flashing back a few years when Taylor, then embroiled in a drug-related legal battle, said that golf, not therapy, would help him get clean and straighten out his life. Since then, Taylor has been involved in all sorts of trouble from drugs to tax problems to motor vehicle violations. His latest misstep is just another brick in a wall of bad decisions and self-inflicted woe. In 2003, a "60 Minutes” interview with Taylor spurred much unnecessary controversy. e fact is that the man known as LT didn’t tell us anything that we didn’t already know. Regarding bounties in the NFL, Taylor offered, “at's just part of being the [expletive deleted] rough and tough football player. You get no pay for doing a cheap shot. But if I hit you straight up, yeah we're going to get paid for that.” e bounty issue was an old one. Fox analyst and exCowboys coach Jimmy Johnson used to go toe-to-toe with former Eagles coach Buddy Ryan on bounty accusations. Regarding Taylor’s bounty comments, former Cowboy Deion Sanders stated, “We passed the hat around. Guys put in $100 here, $100 there. You knocked the guy out, but it was not initiated from the team or the coaches.” Added CBS studio host Dan Marino, “We did that with touchdown passes too. Big play, big touchdown passes, players would put it in a pool.” Ironically, Taylor also discussed prostitution in the NFL, stating that teams would send women to their opponents’ hotel rooms to tire them out before games. He also reiterated that he and many NFL players spent as much as $1000 a day on drugs. Was this really news? Taylor’s drug use is about as surprising as Monday coming after Sunday. Sanders admitted that much of what Taylor said about the NFL
46 | New England Golf Monthly | June 2010
is true. CBS analyst Boomer Esiason disagreed with Sanders and Taylor stating, “is is not the NFL that I played in. (Taylor) talks about how he circumvented the NFL's drug testing policy by using other players' urine. at is an affront.” Sanders’ response to Esiason’s naiveté was direct. “You don't know that guys get high?” asked the former AllPro defensive back. “20 year-old or 30 year-old guys with millions of dollars, that equals destruction. “You can't sit up here and tell me that you (were) immune to that stuff. My father used crack. My father used alcohol. I understood those things. I've never smoked or drank in my life because I knew about those things.” Esiason was defending his league, but he was avoiding reality. Not every NFL player engages in such activity, but to deny it exists is silly. At the time of the “60 Minutes” interview, CBS’ NFL Today host Jim Nantz stated that Taylor declined an invitation to come on the show because he did not want to appear with Esiason. Sanders estimated that 30% of NFL players engage in the activities described by Taylor. Marino said that his estimate was a bit high. Sanders suggested that quarterbacks like Marino and Esiason perhaps separated themselves from the rest of their teammates. All of this is, to quote William Shakespeare, much ado about nothing. e bottom line is that in 2003, Lawrence Taylor was trying to trigger sales for a book. His constant claims that a solid 18 holes could cure his ills now ring hollow. After a series of screw-ups and vile behavior, it is clear that Taylor’s passion for golf is not even close to his passion for the gutter. Golf cannot cure Lawrence Taylor and, at this point, who knows if anything can? All of his foolish revelations and excuses are merely the same tired old rants of a gifted athlete hell-bent on self-destruction. The CVS Caremark Charity Classic June 27-29
Once again Brad & Billy bring the Tour to RI Country Club for a Great Cause It’s not the “West Coast Swing “ or the “Florida Swing” on the PGA Tour but to Rhode Island and Southeastern Mass golfers it’s the real thing and in some ways even better. The Golf Scene Rhode Island Golf News by Matt Manco
Connecticut Golf News by Larry Gavrich
Golf is supposedly a hard sport... although someone needs to break the news to Evan Beirne. Beirne, one of 162 golfers from across New England who will vie for the 2010 New England Amateur Championship in July, recently posted a round that should send shivers down the spine of the rest of the field.
Potowomut Country Club’s Bobby Leopold began his 2009 Player of the Year defense with a win at the John P. Burke Memorial Tournament. The Burke was instrumental in Leopold’s POY campaign last year, and his title defense will go a long way in securing another POY trophy. Leopold and Wannamoisett CC’s Ben Tuthill shot matching 142s, before Leopold broke through on the second playoff hole to claim the season’s first major. Leopold opened play with a 70 at Warwick CC, followed by a 72 at Wanumetonomy in difficult conditions, before getting up and down on the 18th for a clinching par. The Burke was Leopold’s first event of the year and the win gives him an early 10 point lead over former Player of the Year and last season’s runner up Charlie Blanchard. Tuthill is currently in 3rd place, the multiple RIGA major winner has a strong track record at the upcoming Four-Ball Championship. Next up on the RIGA major schedule is the FourBall Championship. The Four-Ball is a 36 hole, no cut, stroke play event held this year at Crestwood CC in Rehoboth, MA and Ledgemont CC in Seekonk, MA. The Hendrick Family has garnered a lot of attention this season for their stunning remodel of Meadow Brook Golf Club in Richmond. Lost in all the praise of Meadow Brook is their other property, Exeter Country Club, a course hit hard by the early season flood. Exeter is proud to announce the course is open and in great shape. The water level is back to normal, the bridges are back, and all 18 holes look great from all the water and rest they received. Route 102 has been fully repaired and the course is now accessible from both east and west again.

Massachusetts Golfer Kevin Blaser Makes 3 Aces in 24 Hours
Segegansett Country Club members Tim Mayhew, Jeff Lindo, Kevin Blaser, and Rick Marcos Standing on the 6th Hole after Kevin made his 3rd hole in one in 24 hours.
Bay State Products Mike Welch and Amateur Herbie Aikens Lead a Field of Six Qualifiers at U.S. Open Local Qualifying Held at Pinehills GC One year ago, Mike Welch (Quincy, MA) was living out his dream of competing in the U.S. Open Championship as a professional player. Although he failed to make the cut that week, he walked away with a strong sense that he could play at that level. Fast forward in time and Welch – who currently stands third on the Hooters Tour money list – is again on pace to take his game to the national stage. Taking on a field of more than 80 professional and amateur players today in Plymouth at U.S. Open Local Qualifying, the two-time New England Amateur Champion (2003, 2004) bested them all by posting a medalist score of 5-under par 67 at Pinehills Golf Club.
The odds of an amateur golfer making a hole in one are roughly 12,500 to 1. So what would you say the odds are for that same golfer making 3 holes in one in 24 hours in competitive golf, that would be 500 million to 1. To put it in prospective you would be more likely to hit the power ball lottery twice. Kevin Blaser from Somerset, Ma did just that on May 29th and 30th. While playing in the Rhode Island State Par 3 Championship at Firefly golf Course in Seekonk, Ma on May 29th Kevin made holes in one on the 10th hole and the 13th hole, not a bad day. Even better less than 24 hours later Kevin holes out another for a hole in one on the 6th hole at his home club Segregansett Country Club in Taunton, Ma in a club’s President Cup tournament. That’s 3 hole in one’s in less than 24 hours.

Ladies First
As I sit writing this article, we have 24 ladies taking an Instructional League that provides ½ an hour to 45 minutes of PGA lead instruction, followed by 9 holes of golf as instructors walk/play with each group of women. We run four Instructional Leagues a week that each run for a 6 week session. We offer over 16 sessions throughout the year and all end up sold out and are met with eager anticipation. Why so successful? And how did this program come about? It all started with a thought on how to build a ladies program that was designed specifically for women. This program would not only teach women the fundamentals necessary to enjoy the game of golf but also provide them with the pure enjoyment of playing. How do you fall in love with the game if you never experience the best part? Playing! To me golf is the thrill of a holed put, the beauty of the sun coming up over the course or the smell of a freshly cut green. Too many programs focus on hitting balls blindly on the driving range purely focusing on grip, stance and swing. at's all well and good but that is only a small part of the game. While the program starts with grip, stance and swing, we also focus on putting, chipping and course etiquette. It is perhaps the later that is a key ingredient to instruction when it comes to teaching women that is most overlooked.
50 | New England Golf Monthly | June 2010
Women want to know where to put their bag when putting, how to fix ball marks, how to rake a trap and all the proper golf terminology that will allow them to focus on the golf. Thus not feeling self conscious when heading out onto the course. The more comfortable that they are, the more they enjoy the game and thus the more they play. Another important element to our Instructional Leagues is the social aspect that it provides. Women have the chance to meet like minded women with a similar golf skill set. When grouped in foursomes they become fast friends. We often find many of our participants coming back time and time again to play on the course with the women they have met through the Instructional Leagues. e clinic format is also a home run in that new golfers are extremely self conscious and by having 45 ladies per instructor the focus is not solely on their swing or lack thereof but more on how to improve each player within the group. Often times a lady who asks a question regarding the swing or course etiquette is also asking a question other ladies are thinking. It is a fantastic dynamic! So while many courses claim to be women friendly we are truly a facility that caters to the needs of the women golfer. Look for our ladies tournament “Celebration of Woman's Golf ” to benefit the Susan G Komen for the Cure.

Gorman vs. Geary by Tom Gorman and Tim Geary
q. What’s your choice? by Tom Gorman
Should Women be Allowed to Play in Men’s Tournament’s?
Maybe my meds are not kicking in, but I thought this issue was settled: women compete with women and men compete with men! Who has a problem with that other than Elaine Joyce? Please fast-forward to politically-correct gibberish strewn by Mr. Geary if you think your local men’s club championship tournament should allow women. Just the thought makes my blood boil! Its even worse than a four-putt green! First, this argument has nothing to do with the precedent court case against Haverhill Country Club filed in 1995 by nine women who claimed the club systemically discriminated against a group of female golfers. A jury in 1999 awarded $1.9 million in damages to the women, nearly all of them spouses of members, who accused the club of sex discrimination for denying them full membership and equal access to the golf course. Get over it ladies! e answer is a resounding no! Women are not going to play in the men’s club championship under any circumstances. Chill out and go buy a golf lesson instead of a $300 Gucci pocketbook! Leave us alone and let us play man-to-man in our own golf tournaments, with our own rules and among players of our own sex! Butt out! Now, along comes Elaine Joyce, a 3-handicap with 22 women’s club championships, who wants to tee it up with the men sometimes. She said she wants to play in men’s tournaments for the challenge of competing against better players. Who does she think she is – Michelle Wie? Some call her a pioneer; I call her a trouble-maker. When we spoke on May 26, the feisty, 44-year old software engineer, did not regret her long, arduous decision to sue the town of Dennis. She now awaits a jury trial that could pay her anywhere from $75,000 to $500,000 in damages and legal fees. Joyce said she played in the 2004 men’s club championship at Bayberry Hills GC (Yarmouth) and finished in the top-20. She said Dennis Pines has “lied” in several news reports since the decision and that the club still has not clearly established the policy for women playing in men’s designated tournaments. Also, Joyce did not say why she has not entered any men-only
60 | New England Golf Monthly | June 2010
events since she was rejected in spring 2007. Although Joyce brought this issue on herself, she said she has been the target of wrath from Dennis Pines members and taxpayers, who might have to pay damages from the lawsuit. Although she claims a town insurance policy will pay the financial settlement, she refuses to say what she will do with the windfall. She has never been a member at a private course and said she has no intention of joining one. “I am happy with the decision and I’m happy the town will not appeal,” she said. “Some staff and members have shunned me, criticized me, harassed me and a ranger has chased me around for four hours at a member-guest. I hope closure will come when a jury decides the monetary damages.”Dennis Pines has stated that they changed the rules to allow women to play in men’s tournaments several months before Joyce sued in the fall of 2007. Women should compete with women and men should compete with men, whether it be golf, high-jumping, badminton, soccer or whatever. Case closed. I hope the jury awards her $1.00. Before chanting in unison “male, chauvinist, pig” here’s some positive vibes and a glimpse of a profile of today’s women golfers from Debbie O’Connell, LPGA and Vice President of Ladies Links for Golf. ere are 6.6 million women playing at least three rounds of golf per year and 24% of all golfers are women. e fastest growing segment of women golfers are age 39-49. Women over 60 average 30-plus rounds of golf per year and spend more dollars on golf. Women will spend some $125 billion on travel/leisure in the next year. Serious women golfers, playing 12 times or more per year, make $100,000-plus. ere are 49% who get weather information to determine if it will interfere with their golf. About 42% schedule tee times online. Until next month…keep it in the short grass. We might address whether women should pay reduced green fees because the courses they play are shorter! Tom Gorman, a member of the Golf Writers Association of America, International Network of Golf and Golf Travel Writers of America, is a Boston-based freelance golf writer.
q. What’s your choice? by Tim Geary
Should Women be Allowed to Play in Men’s Tournament’s?
Over the past few months we have argued the merits of private vs public courses, the morality of using the long putter and whether or not Tiger Woods can rebound from his “anksgiving Feast”? Now we enter shark-invested waters; should women be allowed to participate in men’s tournaments? I assume that since Mr. Gorman is adamantly opposed to women being allowed to compete with the guys he either has a very comfortable couch in his home or Mrs. Gorman does not delve this deeply into “NEGM.” is could very well be our last debate. When this issue hits the stands Gorman could very well have to enter the witness protection plan or be added to the endangered species list, right behind the Macedonian Dodo. It may not be alphabetically correct but it qualifies in every other sense. Let’s clarify a point right now; Most women don’t want to play with men any more than we might want them sharing our foursome. We love to have the adorable 18-year old cart girl motor around every couple of holes, allowing us to fulfill two basic male requirements, one of which includes overpriced beer (as for the second, I’ll leave that to your individual imaginations). Men and women have this emotional DMZ ingrained into their respective DNAs and for the most part it extends to the first tee. This, however, should not make it impossible for the two sides to come together when golf clubs are involved. e debate is whether or not women should be allowed to play in men’s tournaments? But there’s NO SUCH ANIMAL! I’ve yet to see any competition on the golf course officially listed as a “men’s” event, at any level, be it the local club to the PGA Tour. It may be assumed, but it is not written in any rule book. Now the opposite is true of men playing in women’s events. LPGA signifies “Ladies” professional golf tour. Its bi laws prohibit men from participating. There is no such regulation on the PGA Tour. Tim Finchem’s organization does not limit competitors based on their gender, but rather their ability or lack thereof.
On the amateur side of things there are club championships at most golf clubs. It is generally understood that these are for the men, but no gender requirement is attached. It’s why most clubs also have a ladies club championship that is exclusive. There is also the U.S. Amateur, open to anyone whose handicap is low enough to allow them to enter. It does not forbid women from participating, just hackers such as myself and my worthy, if somewhat backwards, colleague. If a woman so desires and can attempt to qualify for a PGA Tour event. If she shoots a low enough score she can play, simple. Annika Soranstam was invited to compete in the PGA Tour’s Colonial event a few years back and did very nicely. She just missed the cut playing from the same tees as everyone else in the field. It was a publicity gimmick, but so what? Nobody was hurt, nobody died and no male professional was denied a spot in the field because Annika was playing. Michelle Wie has tried, in the past, to qualify for the U.S. Open (As I said earlier it’s called ‘open’ from a reason). She didn’t make it. is exclusionary, Neanderthal kind of thinking certainly extends far beyond the out-of-bounds stakes. It has been holding society back for years. Remember this riddle; “A father and his son, who are injured in a car accident, are rushed to two different hospitals. e boy needs an operation, but the doctor says "I can't operate on this boy, he's my son". It befuddled the majority of men because we were not mentally able to accept women as doctors. For years we’ve lived in our little chauvinistic cocoons, but fortunately the caterpillar thought processes have been eaten away and replaced by beautiful butterflies. And if they want to play in men’s tournaments, and can qualify from the men’s tees, then God bless them, they are more than welcome. I’ll even carry their bag. Tim Geary is a Rhode Island based freelance golf writer with over 35 years of experience. He has no need for a couch, just a good swing coach.
