Olympic Golf Over the last month one professional golfer after another has dropped out of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro August 11th – the 17th. Players are citing schedule, the Zika virus, safety concerns and a host of personal reasons none of us may ever know. Let’s all do a reality check here. Olympic athletes spend years training for a single opportunity to win a gold medal in a global competition held every 4 years. This single purpose challenge represents a lifelong mission to reach the pinnacle of excellence in their sport. “The Best in The World”. The amount of money earned by an Olympic athlete is just a bit more than a true amateur golfer. While some countries pay salaries to their athletes, most do not. Their training and expenses are funded through corporate contributions making what they endure to compete all the more impressive. Professional athletes should never be invited or allowed to play in the Olympics. The opportunity should be reserved for those who have made a commitment to excellence in their life to be the best of the best for the love and passion of world competition. The pride and honor of amateur athletes should be upheld and respected. There is no place for professionals at the Olympic games. One of golf’s most prolific players in the history of the game was Bobby Jones. Jones was the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete at a national and international level. During his peak from 1923 to 1930, he dominated top-level amateur competition, and competed very successfully against the world’s best professional golfers. Jones earned his living mainly as a lawyer, and competed in golf only as an amateur, primarily on a part-time basis. He chose to retire from competition at age 28, though he earned significant money from golf after that, as an instructor and equipment designer. Let amateurs be amateurs on the world stage they have worked so very hard to get to.

Golf, family and tradition have long been important parts of Waterville Golf Links history. Over the years numerous activities and tournaments,including the highly recognized Father-Son and the Father- Daughter tournaments The Kerry Cup and most recently Women’s Golf Day, have been staples in encouraging family involvement through golf. Carr Golf is widely recognized as one of the premier golf tour operators to Ireland and are well known for their Father-Son and Father- Daughter tournaments held at Waterville Golf Links.

The 9th annual World Father & Daughter Golf Tournament took place July 25th – 28th 2016 in Waterville, Co. Kerry. This is the second year running that this great tournament was played at the world famous Waterville Golf Links. This is a unique opportunity for fathers and daughters to spend quality time together while playing one of the best golf courses in the world. This three-day event is filled with fun, laughter and friendships. The event started when Marty Carr was approached by his friend and now partner James Layden. “As I have two daughters and my partner James Layden has

three, we decided to host a Father & Daughter event 9 years ago. While it took a long time to get it established, we are delighted that we now have so many international entries from so many of the world’s top golf clubs”. Steve and Kaitlyn Lee from Winged Foot won the gross category, posting a stunning 6 under par gross total over 36 holes. Kaitlyn played the Waterville course in 74 shots, a course record for the ladies in a competitive round. The victory came hot on the heels of their victory in the Winged Foot Father & Daughter late last week. Bill McGuiness and his daughter Mary from Pine Valley GC/Tavistock GC were second with Michael and Stephanie Sullivan from Garden City GC in third. James and Mary Layden from Bel Air Golf Club won the net category with a total of 94 points. Upon accepting their award Jim Layden had this to say “Playing one of the finest golf courses in the world, with first class organization, nightly dinners and sing-songs, the comradery between a wonderful group of like-minded dad’s and their daughters has made this a very special week in our lives and one of the great Father & Daughter experiences in golf.” The Carr family has a long tradition in golf as described by Marty. “We started the Father & Son 27 years ago. Our family played in and won the Kerry Gold Classic in Waterville many years ago and Waterville has always been a very special place for our family. The Father & Son is now played over four days every year and has 90 teams from 13 countries and includes celebrities such as Dan Marino, Wayne Gretzky, Dan Quayle and many others”. The Kerry Cup takes place in early July in Waterville and is available to 72 rising 9th-12th grade students. The Kerry Cup provides accomplished junior golfers the opportunity to be instructed by prominent college coaches from elite academic schools. It also provides them the opportunityto

compete against talented junior players that aspire to play college golf and to enjoy the thrill of playing links golf at one of the premier golf courses in the world. Players will emerge from this once-in-a-lifetime experience with a stronger game, with new friends and with the knowledge and tools needed to succeed as a college golfer and in life beyond. Katie Brophy, Head Coach of Women’s golf at Georgetown University had this to say about the event “The structure of this golf experience is very unique and highly interactive between players, parents, prep school coaches and division one and division three college coaches. It is a positive learning experience on many levels especially as these young players have an opportunity to play on a world class links golf course. Given the climate changes in Ireland they experienced every kind of weather condition and come away with a competitive advantage as they go forward in tournament play” Women’s Golf Day is the most recent addition to the Waterville traditions. This was the first year Women’s Golf Day, the one-day four-hour

experience for women and girls to learn and play golf, was held around the world. Waterville Golf Links was the first course to sign up as a participating facility outside North America. By the time the event was held on June 7th 2016 there were over 400 locations in 28 countries participating. As a result, Waterville and the ladies participating were recognised as one of the four courses that were highlighted in the significant coverage of Women’s Golf Day by Golf Digest Ireland. Each of these unique golf events highlights a different way for families to interact through golf. These events offer substantive opportunities to grow the game by encouraging more people to participate in golf while having quality time with their families.

While the Kennedys put Martha’s Vineyard in national consciousness, visitors from around the globe perpetuate the exploratory lore. Hiking and biking trails permeate the island. In Oak Bluffs, ginger bread houses line the streets. Early settlers’ craftsmanship with scroll saws uniquely details the architecture. This is no cookie cutter neighborhood. Beach ball sized hydrangeas bloom here and on Cape Cod all summer long. Farm Neck Golf Course, little cottages and mansions provide a remote getaway for dignitaries and stars. Gazing from the cupola of The Mansion House in Martha’s Vineyard gifts an amazing view of the island port where the Steamship Authority ferried us over from Woods Hole, Cape Cod along with a tractor-trailer, armored car, and many more vehicles including our Kia Soul, allowing us to zip around the island loop on our own time clock. We rediscovered the Wampanaug tribal outpost in Aquinnah where the Gay Head Cliffs and lighthouse pose

breathtaking scenery against the crashing Atlantic. Legend has it that Moshup, a benevolent giant, reddened the clay with whales’ blood when flinging them by their tails against the cliffs. Now that’s a whale of a tale. Steamship Authority ferries run frequently from morning to night for an easy day trip, weeklong, or forever. Land taxes are surprisingly only 2 percent, such a deal! The Ocean Edge Resort’s Mansion Hotel and Villages have something for everyone on the mainland in Brewster. Throughout Cape Cod, beaches, fresh seafood, boutique, antique and thrift shops make for a serene or active vacation. In Cape Cod Bay, known as the salt flats, one can walk for miles over the rippled wet sand at low tide. Beach passes may be purchased in any town to enjoy standup paddle boarding, kayaking, body surfing, lounging, tanning, fishing or whale watching. Nightlife peaks at the Sand Bar in West Dennis or the Ocean Terrace in Brewster, perfect for

POWERED BY GOLFTRAVELWEEKLY.COM sunset dinners. Live bands play all week at the Woodshed Lounge. The crowd packs in. It is a short ride from bay to bay with Irish Pubs dotting the entire cape. For the craziest night entertainment the outer cape takes the cake. Happy hour in Wellfleet at Mac’s Shack is a super value with an ocean view. Wellfleet oysters are world famous for their sweetness, served raw on the half shell. Mac started the Wellfleet oyster fest, now in it’s 16th year in October, celebrating the best. In his Provincetown restaurant tuna tails decorate the wall while chefs decorate plates with house-smoked delights such as pigs’ tails in the clams linguica - so good you’ll want to sop up every drop of sauce with the crusty bread. Ptown is an impressive art colony with much to explore – the Pilgrim Tower and Commercial

Street - full of shops, restaurants, show stops and a promenade of characters. The Inn at Cook St. is a comfy retreat in walking distance to everything including a private beach access. A very different beach experience is found on The Dunes Tour. It’s a botanical history in a suburban with deflated tires maneuvering over deep sandy hills covered with scrub oaks and skirt pines before settling on the western beach. Dinners are served or bring your own bottle of wine and a lobster or Portuguese roll. The waves roll in as seals pop up grinning with their supper catch between their teeth and the sun sets over the ocean with a rainbow of colors. Rainbows are implanted on flags and shirts, everywhere in Ptown in celebration of the LGBT community. Any art and water lover has a great time there and everywhere in Cape Cod.

Dennis Golf They say great things come in pairs. This is the case in the Town of Dennis with two championship public tracks at one facility. The magic of the New England summer has us all under its spell. The long, warm, sunny days keep us on the golf course, and the sizzling Red Sox offense keeps us captivated in the evening. The history-rich El Campéon golf course at Mission Inn Resort and Club, just 35 minutes from Orlando in Howey-in-the-Hills, has played host to many notable players and tournaments since 1917. The resort’s “100th Anniversary Golfers Getaway Package” will allow visitors to play this very special parcel of Americana at significant savings. Celebrity Golfer:

Fuzzy Zoeller by Leigh MacKay Fuzzy. That’s all a golf fan needs to hear. That nickname of Frank Urban Zoeller, Jr. identifies one of professional golf’s most memorable characters. Fuzzy joined the PGA TOUR in 1975 after playing golf at the University of Houston with Bill Rogers and Bruce Lietzke. He brought with him a fluid, powerful swing and a deft putting stroke. He also brought something more important to all of us outside the ropes: he showed us how to enjoy the game. Fuzzy would whistle his way down the fairways and around the greens—sunglasses hanging loosely around his neck—and display his unique, happy-go-lucky attitude. He also fashioned an enduring rapport with the galleries by having fun at his work and by winning their unreserved approval. Fuzzy had 10 wins on TOUR. His first one in 1979 at the Andy Williams-San Diego Open set the stage for his first Masters and his scene-stealing, two-hole playoff victory against Tom Watson. Five years later Fuzzy won his second Major in the US Open at Winged Foot in an 18-hole playoff with Greg Norman, 67-75. Fuzzy helped make the Skins Game a Thanksgiving weekend TV staple by winning it back to back in 1985-86. He won two events on the Champions Tour, including the 2002 Senior PGA. During his time on the big TOUR, Fuzzy was plagued with chronic back problems that required surgery, and he has limited his play on the Champions Tour this year to five or six events because the arthritis in his hands makes it difficult for him “to grip that old club properly anymore.” But Fuzzy, now 64, keeps himself busy with his two favorite pastimes, hunting and fishing, and he has become an entrepreneur with his own liquor brand, “Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka.” He also likes to design golf courses and has 19 to his credit.

Photo courtesy of the USGA In 1985, the USGA bestowed its highest honor upon Fuzzy, the Bob Jones Award “in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship.” In 2015, Fuzzy received the Champions Tour Bruno Award for his “special and outstanding contributions” to the game and for “socializing with both sponsors and fans to create a unique experience.” An Indiana native through and through, Fuzzy lives with his wife Diane in Floyds Knobs and has four grown-up children, Sunny, Heidi, Gretchen, and Miles.

NEGM: How did your charismatic personality evolve?

FZ: First, you’ve got to look at my gene pool, at my mother and dad. I was always blessed to have their support, and they taught me the right way to play golf—to enjoy it through the good times and the bad and to realize it was only a game. I think a lot of people and pros lose track of that fact. My attitude all along has been to have fun on the golf course, and I certainly take pleasure in entertaining the people who come out to watch us play. Golf is the greatest game ever, but it is still a game.

NEGM: What one victory had the most significance for you?

FZ: You would expect me to say the Masters or the US Open, I bet. Both are certainly at the top of my list. However, the one that probably means the most to me is the 1985 Bay Hill Classic. When I won Arnold’s tournament, I had just come back after six months off the TOUR as a result of my first major back surgery. I had to teach myself how to walk in that hospital there for six weeks, and then I had to get my game back to compete at the highest level. So that victory kinda sits in my mind as the one I’ll always remember.

NEGM: Were the Skins Games as much fun to participate in as they appeared to be on TV?

FZ: Oh, yes! In my three years, I got to play with Arnold, Jack, Lee, and Tom. I loved how we all went at each other, Arnold and Jack especially, when there was money on the line. If I had the only putt left to tie Arnold, Jack would say to me, “Don’t you miss that.” Then Arnold would tell me the same thing a few holes later. We just had a lot of back-and-forth banter that made the camaraderie that much better. Winning the Skins Game twice was pretty terrific, too.

NEGM: Do you look forward to returning to Augusta National each April?

FZ: Absolutely. It’s always been such an honor to go there, and that Champions Dinner is so special to us all. I’ve taken over for Sam Snead, who used to have us falling off our chairs with the raunchiest jokes ever. Now I don’t tell the raunchy ones, but I’ve got a lot of good ones. The Par-3 event is the showpiece for the past champions and the players before the tournament, and it’s our opportunity to show people just how important family is. Most of the players bring their kids as caddies, but my kids are older now. So I always pull one or two youngsters from the gallery to putt for me. We all just have a blast.

NEGM: How did you get into the vodka business?

FZ: Because I didn’t want my name on a private label wine! I had that opportunity, but I don’t drink wine. One of my buddies then said to me, “Why wouldn’t you invest in vodka? You certainly drink enough of it.” His idea had merit, and Fuzzy’s Vodka is the result. Now that’s something I believe in!

NEGM: You bet John Daly he wouldn’t live to be 50? You lost on April 28.

FZ: Yes, and I paid him off with something he could use, too. A 1.75 liter of my vodka! I wrote on it, “Happy 50th!” and signed it. I gave it to him on the first tee at his first Champions event in May at The Woodlands CC in Houston.

NEGM: You are a three-time Ryder Cup veteran. Can the US finally prevail this year at Hazeltine?

FZ: Yes, I think our boys can. But I can’t tell you why they can! What’s great about the Ryder Cup is that you’ve got 24 of the best golfers in the world. If one team gets hot—like the Euros did in 2014 at Gleneagles—that team’s gonna win. No reason why the US cannot get hot this fall and bring that cup back to this side of the Atlantic. It’s great golf, and it’s great theater, but that Ryder Cup format is very difficult, especially the alternate shot. But this is our year to regain the trophy—I hope!

2016 Team New England ON THE TOURS AUGUST UPDATE Team New England is having a good year with three victories. In May Richy Werenski won the Web. com BMW Pro-Am Championship. In June James Driscoll won the Web.com Tour Nashville Golf Open. And in July Aaron Baddeley won the PGA Tour Barbasol Championship. In addition, PGA Tour Champion TNE player Billy Andrade is ranked second in the Charles Schwab Cup Race.

On The PGA Tour Jon Curran, (MA), leads TNE’s PGA Tour players through July with earn¬ings of $1,800,123 and a scoring average of 70.094. In just his second year on the PGA Tour, Jon has made 15 cuts in 24 starts. Not long off the tee Curran’s driving accuracy, ranked 44th, and hitting 63.93% of his fairways makes up for his lack of distance. Jon’s biggest job is to improve his GIR rank of 162nd. A FedEx Cup rank of 45th, we look forward to seeing Jon at TPC Boston this year in the play-offs. Arron Baddeley, (NH), overcame his five plus year slump to win the Barbasol Championship in July. With the win Baddeley has earnings of $1,549,400 with a scoring average of 70.712. He has made 15 cuts in 23 starts. His Barbasol win gives Aaron a 2 year exemption on the PGA Tour and launched him up the FedEx Cup list to 43rd.

Keegan Bradley, (VT), is sitting on a scoring average of 71.112, having made 10 cuts in 21 starts with earnings of $742,155. Currently ranked 119th in the standings, Bradley’s problems with the ‘flat stick’ continue to be his Achilles heel since the anchor putting ban. His other stats continue to improve.

Scott Stallings, (MA), has earned $627,834 to date with a scoring average of 71.104. Making 10 cuts in 23 starts Scott is just outside the 125 number at 128th on the FedEx Cup list. Stallings is running out of time to crack the magic 125 number to maintain full tour status. Driving accuracy and his sand game continue to be Scott’s biggest problems. Rob Oppenheim, (MA), is running out of time to claw his way into the top 125 money earners in his first year on the PGA Tour. Ranked 150th Rob’s earnings are $452,875 with a scoring average of 71.416. He has made 12 cuts in 17 starts. At this writing, there are four events before the play-offs begin.

J.J. Henry, (CT), has a scoring average of 72.108, with earnings of $280,674. Making 12 cuts in 20 starts, Henry’s last win came at the Barracuda Championship in 2015. JJ has struggled with his game after briefly losing his card a couple of years ago.

Tim Petrovic, (MA) has not been the same since losing his PGA Tour card in 2011. Playing where ever he can, Tim has made 3 cuts in 11 starts between the PGA and Web.com tours. Hopefully Petrovic is working on his game as he is eligible for the PGA Champions Tour August 18th.

PGA Tour Champions Billy Andrade, (RI), has a scoring average of 70.17 with earnings of $899,122. Playing in 14 events Billy has not won in 2016 but seems to be in contention almost every week. Andrade is ranked 2nd in the Schwab Cup Race. At this writing Billy finish T-9th in the Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie SCO.

Brad Faxon, (RI), has a scoring average of 73.50 after 9 events this season with earnings of $80, 246. Brad has been doing triple duty this year. Commentating for Fox Sports, the CVS Health Charity Classic and the playing on the PGA Tour Champions. ‘Fax’ is doing great work commentating and as always the CoHosting the CVS event with Billy Andrade.

European Tour Peter Uihlein, (MA), has made 7 cuts in 11 starts in 2016 earning $227,832. Peter’s scoring average is 71.42. Ranked 175th in Driving Accuracy and 129th in GIR, Peter’s priorities when it comes to improvement are well established. With the rest of his numbers improving, Uihlein isn’t far out of the winner’s circle.

LPGA Tour Megan Khang, (MA), has made 7 cuts in 17 starts with earnings of $158,742 and a scoring average of 72.19 in her first year on the LPGA Tour. Looking at her stats, her sand save percentage indicates much work is needed. With her father Lee serving as her coach and caddie, I’m sure Megan is working on that sand game. Brittany Altomare, (VT), has made 9 cuts in 12 starts in her rookie season on the LPGA Tour. Earnings of $119,019, Altomare is ranked 76th in the CME Globe Race with a scoring average of 71.35. The University of Virginia graduate holds promise for TNE on the LPGA Tour. Brittany’s stats are excellent. It won’t be long before we see her in the winner’s circle. Alison Walshe, (MA), is in year 8 of her professional career and is having a very tough year. Walshe has made 1 cut in 16 starts through the Marathon Classic. With a slightly improved scoring average of 73.94 Alison’s career earnings are at $807,201.

Web.Com Tour James Driscoll, (MA) Won the inaugural Nashville Golf Open to jump into the top 25 on the Web.Com money list, ranked 20th. James’ scoring average is 70.29 with earnings of $122,537. Has made 6 cuts in 14 starts. We should see Driscoll back on the PGA Tour next season. Richy Werenski, (MA) won the BMW Charity Pro-Am for his first win. He currently is ranked 3rd on the Web.Com Money List with earnings of $263,470. A scoring average of 70.45, Richy has made 7 cuts in 16 starts. Werenski’s sand game and birdie conversion need work. Werenski will join the PGA Tour soon. Jim Renner, (MA) lost his PGA Tour card last year and is having a rough road this year on the Web.Com in spite of impressive stats. An improved actual Scoring Average of 70.85, Jim’s earnings are $52,621 putting him 61st on the Web.com money list. Renner’s only weakness seems to be birdie conversions on par 5’s with a rank of 112th.

If you think youʼre going to play at your best without properly warming up your body, youʼre wrong. If your body isnʼt prepped for 18 holes of golf, in a best case scenario youʼre not going to play as well as you can. Worst case scenario, youʼre going to get hurt. If you know anything about me, you know that Iʼm all about optimizing the body for the sport of golf. The workouts, exercises, and drills I do with my players are designed to make sure that they can play to the best of their ability. If youʼve been doing my program at home youʼve also been pretty busy changing your body. But to make su that all of that hard work transfers over to the golf course, you need to make sure that your new body is ready to go sure play 18 holes.

Leg Swings

To loosen up the muscles around the hips in a very linear way — weʼll get to rotational moves later — stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Shift your weight slightly so that most of your weight is on your left leg and you can lift your right foot off the ground without bending at the knee. Think of your right leg as a pendulum. Keeping the leg straight, swing it directly in front of you — think 12:00 on a clock — then let the momentum of the move swing the leg directly in back of you to 6:00. Every time the leg goes back to 6:00 is one rep. Do five reps on each leg. Now — while still facing forward — do the f 3:00 to 9:00. Do five complete side-to-side swings on each leg. Run through this series of same thing swinging the leg from swings twice. If youʼre having trouble with your balance, you can stabilize yourself with one of your clubs. Eventually, though, try to get to the point where you can do this without any balance aid.

Prisoner Squats

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Your knees and toes should be pointing forward. Place your hands gently behind your head with your elbows flared out to the sides. Ideally, you wonʼt be able to see your own elbows when youʼre in this position. (That said, donʼt apply too much pressure to the back of your head to get into this position. Your neck wonʼt like you.) Slowly kick your hips back, bend your knees, and lower yourself as if you were sitting into an imaginary chair. Try not to let your knees slide forward. AN OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL DOES NOT MEASURE UP TO A GREEN JACKET by Jack Ross When the decision was made in 2009 to bring golf back to the Olympics for the first time since 1904, it was anticipated that adding the game into the mix of the most revered sports event would give golf a much needed boost in worldwide recognition and participation. However, on the eve of the Olympic Games in Rio, the debut of golf on this prominent stage appeared tarnished even before the 60 male and 60 female participants teed it up on the new Olympic Golf Course. Over the past several months, male golfers have been dropping out of the Olympics faster than the greens were running at the U.S. Open at Oakmont. At least 21 eligible golfers will be absent, including the top four players in the world: Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy. This has taken more than a little luster off the competition. Players have identified the threat of the Zika virus as the primary reason for their exodus from the Games, but that might afford a convenient excuse. Security concerns, scheduling concerns, and other health concerns about the Rio environs surely factored in. Stacy Lewis was more blunt in opining that the men simply make too much money to care about the Olympics. But perhaps the biggest reason for the lack of top male players in Rio is that, unlike other sports such as swimming and track and field, the Olympics does not represent the ultimate achievement in golf. McIlroy observed: “Most other athletes dream their whole lives of winning an Olympic gold and we haven’t. We dream of winning claret jugs and green jackets.”

Gary Player suggested that professional golfers should not be part of the Olympics. “They should replace us with amateurs who would hold it at high esteem to represent their countries with great joy.” The format of the competition – a 72-hole stroke play event -- has also drawn criticism. A match play, team competition might have been more interesting. Adam Scott commented: “Just having another 72hole golf tournament with a weaker-thanmost field doesn’t really pique my interest.” Unlike the men, however, women golfers are embracing the Olympics. Only two women have withdrawn, and all of the top golfers will compete at Rio. Lewis epitomizes this attitude: “I want to be a part of the Olympics. It is the biggest thing out there.” Christine Kim said that “it’s going to be one of the biggest things to happen to women’s golf.” Some cynics have speculated that if the women made as much money as the men, their allegiance to the Olympics would wane. Nevertheless, some of the women who will compete at Rio are concerned that the exodus of so many top men will threaten the status of golf as an Olympic sport in the future. The Olympics are committed only through 2020. Lewis commented: “Their decisions affect us. It’s just really disappointing.” So the jury is out on whether the debut of golf at the Olympics will bolster the sport or prove to be short-lived. But it won’t be a good sign if the winners are swatting away mosquitoes on the medal platforms.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s every golferâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fantasy. You are walking down the 18th fairway of a championship golf course and the members of the club are watching you live on the big screen TV in the main lounge. Now live the dream at Shaker Hills Country Club in Harvard, Mass. Shaker Hills is a championship course designed by legendary architect Brian Silva. It is one of the most dramatic and picturesque courses in New England, with elevated tees and rolling fairways lined by towering pine and oak trees. The large greens provide an ample target,

but there is a lot of break on these greens so check that days pin locations carefully if you hope to score well. Four sets of tees makes the course playable for all golfers no matter what your handicap may be. The first hole is a perfect way to start the round. At only 318 yards from the white tees, it is slight dog leg left with plenty of room on the right for your tee shot. Flip a wedge to the green and you can start the round with a par. The grass is green and plush from tee to fairways and greens, a testament to the exemplary work of the superintendent. My favorite was the 18th playing 521yards from the middle tees. From the elevated 18th tee, you need a solid drive to clear the chasm and land in the fairway. The hole twists down to a green that is only steps from the clubhouse. This is the TV fantasy hole. On the clubhouse roof a camera monitors the 18th fairway, and provides a live feed to a big screen TV over the bar. Anybody that is enjoying a meal or an adult beverage at the bar can watch your exploits on the final fairway. You can also enjoy

What You Need to Know About

2016 Golf Balls & Wedges By ED TRAVIS It’s great to hit a soaring drive down the fairway and most golfers are aware of the best way to maximize distance and control is by matching the driver and ball to their swing. But a driver is only used 14 times during a round while the shorter, scoring shots under 150-yards may occur every hole so they deserve attention as well. Golf balls are made with different performance characteristics to consider. Some, usually categorized as tour-quality, have urethane covers and multiple layers to better provide distance off the tee plus control spin and distance on scoring shots. Others with firmer ionomer or Surlyn covers have large cores and are made more for just delivering pure distance. They spin much less than tour balls and thus are more difficult to control on the shorter shots around the green. Others while having ionomer covers, have a third layer or mantle that give improved spin control in contrast to distance balls. High performance or tourquality golf balls sell for $40 or more per dozen while distance balls retail for $25 per dozen or less. Prices of the multi-layer ionomer-cover balls fall somewhere in between.

The wedges you carry should have lofts that “gap” properly starting with the pitching wedge and increasing usually in four-degree increments through the sand wedge. If the pitching wedge, which mostly likely came with your iron set, is 46 degrees adding wedges of 50, 54 and 58 degrees should cover the distances needed for the scoring shots. The grooves and bounce on your wedges are another important consideration though. Wedges with less loft have relatively deep and narrow grooves and higher lofts somewhat shallower and wider grooves. Bounce is misunderstood by many but the profile or grind of a wedge’s sole should match the playing conditions most often encountered. Higher bounce wedges usually produce the best results when the turf is soft and from the sand and lower bounce wedges work best when conditions are firm. As we have said often before, to best match the golf balls and the wedges you play to your game, consult a PGA Professional, she or he has the answers.

Ben Hogan Golf The Ben Hogan TK, though not a strictly new model, has weight evenly across the back of the clubhead, a V-Sole grind and loft-specific weighting to help controlling distance. Available in lofts between 48 degrees (bounce - 18 degrees leading edge and 4 degrees trailing edge) and 63 degrees (bounce -35 degrees leading edge and 6 degrees trailing edge). Forged with six-step process from 1025 carbon steel with CNC milled faces. Priced at $149 each.

Callaway Golf This year the MD3 models are the third iteration of the Mack Daddy line and come which a choice of three sole grinds and three groove designs. Callaway engineers headed by Roger Cleveland solicited Tour player input and specifically made the MD3s to be used in a variety of conditions. All are priced at $130 with the W-Grind having a wider sole for softer conditions and bunkers. The S-Grind accommodates a variety of shot types and attack angles while the C-Grind works best on firm turf with lots of heel and toe relief.

Cleveland Golf Just announced the new RTX-3 line with a blade and cavity back. All make use of Cleveland’s new “Feel Balancing Technology” that moves the center of gravity closer to the clubface’s center impact area to decrease vibration and give the head more stability. The RTX-3 Blade also has three new V-shape sole grinds for more leading edge bounce so the clubhead gets through the turf more easily giving a crisper feel and improved speed to increase spin on the ball. Cleveland also has improved their Rotex face design first seen on the 588 wedges in 2012. Grooves have been made with a deeper, narrower U-shape profile and the 2-pass micro milling is adapted according to wedge loft. Low loft wedges (46 to 52 degrees) have a straighter pattern, best for full shots, and the higher lofts (54 to 64 degrees) have a more angled pattern to help when the face is opened for flop shot trajectory. The RTX-3 Blades offer the choice of finishes between Black Satin, Tour Satin and Tour Raw. The RTX-3 Cavity Back and Women’s RTX-3 Cavity Back come only in Tour Satin. All will in stores Sept.16 at $130.

Cobra Golf The King wedge offers three grinds all made from 8629 carbon steel in a new muscle back design that has been vibration tuned. The Widelow grind is for shots close to the green and from bunkers while the Classic grind has a thinner sole to accommodate different turf conditions. The Versatile grind has a softer leading edge with heel and toe relief. Clubfaces are CNC milled and surface roughness has been improved for more control by helping give more spin. Pricing is $119.

Fourteen Golf Fourteen has made a name for themselves in the club business with their wedges and the new RM-22 ($185) is the latest example. Designed with better players in mind there several features such as heel relief, a clubhead with their reverse muscle design and an aggressive leading edge. Three sole grinds are available: standard, the Bumper which has steep negative bounce on the leading edge and the wider Delta. Available in lofts from 41 degrees to 60 degrees and priced at $185 in chrome or black finish.

Tour Edge Golf The company best known for fairway woods and hybrids is pushing to make a bigger name in irons and the new Rally wedges are a good example of owner David Glodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creative design. They are a high-toe configuration that allows the face to be opened when a high trajectory-soft landing shot is required with a cambered sole to keep the head from digging in too much. Rally wedges are priced at $80 with the stock KBS Tour Black Nickel shaft or $100 with the UST Mamiya Recoil graphite shaft.

Wilson Staff Wilson FG Tour PMP (Precision Milled Performance) wedges feature HM Grooves with eleven laser etched lines between them to aid in spinning the ball on shorter shots. Three sole designs are available - Traditional, Tour Grind, and Wide - and two finishes - Tour Frosted ($100) and Gun Blue PVD ($120). INAUGURAL WORLD CADDIE MATCHES PRESENTED BY BECKMEN LAW

UNCASVILLE, CT – Mohegan Sun Golf Club announced today that it will be the site for the inaugural World Caddie Matches presented by Beckmen Law. This one-of-kind event will take place on Monday, August 29th, when more than 40 PGA Tour caddies from around the world compete in a one day, two-round “Ryder Cup-style” format matches. The morning will feature modified alternate shot matches, followed by singles in the afternoon. This unique, first-ever World Caddie tournament will be open for the public to watch, and some of the PGA pro golfers are also expected to attend to support their caddies! Proceeds from the event will benefit K9s for Warriors, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing service canines to military veterans. As part of the tournament, PGA Tour caddies from the U.S. and Europe will team up into foursomes which will be drawn at random during a pre-match Draw Party at Mohegan Sun on Sunday, August, 28th. Team captains for the U.S. include Steve Hulka, professional caddie to Brian Davis, “Fluff” Cowan, (Jim Furyk), and Joe LaCava, Tiger Wood’s caddie, as Vice-Captain. Wedel made it even more special for himself when he won the 55th Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett Country Club. He shot a closing 2-under 67 for a total of 6-under 270 and survived a wild scramble at the finish that saw six players within one stroke of the lead heading down the stretch.

Matt Hutchins Wins Maine Amateur Championship Matt Hutchins won the Maine Amateur Championship hosted by York Golf & Tennis, closing with a 5-under par 65. The UCLA-bound Hutchins was 6-under for the tournament. Not many golfers in Maine knew the name Matt Hutchins before this week’s Maine Amateur Championship started at York Golf & Tennis Club -- but after his stellar play in today’s final round, he’s certainly on their radar now. The Sandy Spring, Md. resident put together rounds of 69-72141 to win the 34th Connecticut Senior Open. Egloff entered round two action tied for fourth place at two-under par, two strokes behind round one leader Dave Dell, who eventually shot a four-over par 75 in round two for a two-day total of an evenpar 142, good for a tie for second place with Ken Green. Green, a New Fairfield, Conn. resident and five-time PGA Tour winner, carded a one-under par 70 on day one and a one-over par 72.
