Our USGA or Theirs The USGA was originally formed in 1894 to resolve the question of a National Amateur Championship. Earlier that year, the Newport Country Club and Saint Andrew’s Golf Club, Yonkers, New York, both declared the winners of their tournaments the “national amateur champion.” That autumn, delegates from Newport, St. Andrew’s, The Country Club, Chicago Golf Club, and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club met in New York City to form a national governing body, which would administer the championship and also the Rules of Golf for the country. On December 22, 1894, the Amateur Golf Association of the United States was officially formed, and was shortly thereafter renamed the “United States Golf Association”. The USGA has 8000 member clubs, courses and practice facilities in the U.S. There are also nearly 1 million golfing members that range from $10.00 yearly, to $2300.00 yearly, in 7 distinct membership categories. It is fairly difficult to find any accurate facts regarding the exact amount they earn but in 2013 it was said to be over $160 Million. Their recent TV deal with Fox was said to be worth almost $100 Million. The USGA is a non-profit entity that pays no U.S. taxes. Its mission is to grow, govern and protect the integrity of the great game of golf in our country. In the last 10 years the USGA has repeatedly been under fire from golfers at all levels of the game from PGA professionals to amateurs regarding rules changes and interpretations of rules in major tournaments. After the huge response from both the media and the public at this years U.S. Open regarding the ruling on Dustin Johnson the USGA for the first time in years has had to do damage control. If you think they are not listening, think again. Our membership dollars represent tens of millions of dollars in yearly income for the USGA and our attendance at USGA major events is tens of millions more. Golfers who are not members who attend and watch USGA events on TV are also making it possible for huge media contracts each year for the USGA. Sometimes it may not seem like it but this USGA belongs to all of us. We have every right to question the decisions and policies made as members and players.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your carts! We’re off and racing to two of the most famous forums for cars and horses, chasing golf balls in between. When Pete Dye redesigned the Brickyard Crossing he incorporated the infield of the Indy 500 racetrack. He lined streams along the course with recycled concrete, drivers’ names still intact. AJ Foyt stood by at a pre Indy 500 golf tourney. The Brickyard Crossing is a must play if you want to “be on the inside track.” In southern Indiana The French Lick Resort won the Best Historic Resort award by USA Today readers. In the good old days people flocked there to soak in the sun or mineral spas, chasing purported health benefits. Today there is something for everyone. It is a two for one resort since The Cook Group combined the French Lick Springs and the West Baden Springs Hotels. The first is stately with rocking chairs on the outer deck, a spa with stained glass windows, pools, a casino, bowling alley and res-

taurants. 1875 The Steakhouse commemorates the first Kentucky Derby with a fine dining experience. Thomas the Train chugs with passengers to the West Baden Springs Hotel considered the eighth wonder of the world for its atrium dome. Bedroom balconies instill a sense of royalty overlooking the circular expanse. A piano player sets the mood by the atrium bar for a promenade around the perimeter to another

Shuttles transport between all locales including three golf courses, stables, a winery and 33 Brick Street where hometown hero Larry Bird’s memorabilia is displayed. Varied venues and high capacity make French Lick ideal for conferences and events. The upcoming Willie Nelson concert sold out quickly. At former musician promoter Jerry Fuhs’ little hillside mansion, a diesel pickup pulled up. When Jerry went to check it out, a man was kneeling with a sheet of paper and petting the heads of Jerry’s dogs. He turned and said, “Hi, I’m Pete Dye.” Pete completed his design and Jerry sold the mansion to The Cook Group. Now he is chasing his safari dream at nearby Wilstem Ranch, previously owned by a circus entrepreneur. It is a retirement Taj Mahal for three pachyderm maidens as people of all ages come to take part in the elephant encounter showering, scrubbing and polishing the giants’ toes while learning all about them. Some might feel that the Pete Dye course is like a circus. It is probably his most diabolical design in one of his most spectacular settings. The geographical dimensions are extraordinary. Greens are zero edged like infinity pools. Narrow fairways slope to steep hillsides with tall grass. You must have a lot of balls to play this beauty and beast. Jerry’s mansion is now a magnificent

clubhouse for events and serves as the 19th hole of the Pete Dye course. After a grueling round the patio serves a striking view for libations most golfers need. Foursomes receive a tin box decorated with course photos and filled with Woodford Reserve and cigars, nice! The Donald Ross Course at French Lick is more fair but with his usual false front greens. The redesigned Valley Links Course provides a

warm up for the more challenging 18s. To drive to French Lick, you can fly into Indianapolis or Louisville, the home of the greatest - Muhammad Ali. At the Visitor’s Center pick up a passport to the Urban Bourbon Trail. Historic architecture amazes along the way. On the corner of the new 4th Street Live Entertainment complex that lights up the night, The Old Seelbach Hotel is central to all the action. Ten minutes away, the best place for a mint julep is Churchill Downs, which turns into a red carpet for the well-hatted who’s who, during the most famous horseracing event, the Kentucky Derby. Numerous distilleries within an hour of Louisville deliver rich history of before, during and after prohibition along with tastings. Woodford Reserve boasts the oldest still house of 1840. Buffalo Trace produces Weller, Blanton’s and more with complimentary tours and tastings. Jim Beam produces the most bourbon while Makers Mark lets you dip your bottle in red wax to make your own mark. For the final stretch Quail Chase Golf Club on Chapel Road is one of many courses around Louisville. 27 holes designed by David Pfaff roll through the woods over creeks and Kentucky blue grass for pure country golf. HEAVENLY LINKS By Elisa Gaudet

Links land is characterized by exposed sand dunes, an absence of trees, proximity to the ocean and unpredictable weather. Historically, it was land unsuitable for farming but ideal for the genesis of golf. Of all the courses in the world fewer than 300 are genuine links and only a small fraction are of championship caliber which is what makes Waterville Golf Links in Ireland such a unique and special place. Golf was introduced in Waterville by the Commercial Cable Company in 1884. The Waterville cable station operated 6 cables to America, 4 cables to the UK and 2 to France and the course was built as a means recreation and sport for the over 300 workers. Built in 1889 Waterville Golf Links started as a 9-hole course and in the early 1970’s construction began on the now 18-hole links course. 1973 Ireland’s foremost links architect, Eddie Hackett, completes the dream course envisioned by John A. Mulcahy and his close friend Claude Harmon, a past Masters champion and head professional at Winged Foot Golf Club. In 2004 Tom Fazio began a major renovation to the course and as a result, it is often ranked in the top 10 in Britain and Ireland. “Everything at Waterville is spectacular, the setting is one of

the best that I have ever seen anywhere in golf” says Tom Fazio. Michael Murphy, the Waterville links superintendent, was recognized by the R & A for his work in sustainable links management through the promotion of the fine turf fescue grasses over poa annua. Waterville hosts two member-guest events in June and September, as well as a father-son, father-daughter and The Kerry Cup. For each of these events people travel from all over the world to participate. Longtime member, Peter Dagher summed it up “I really love the course and the Waterville house. The course changes every day you play it because of the varying conditions. The member-guest events always highlight the uniqueness of being in Ireland and meeting a diverse international crowd. There is a physical beauty, calm pace and a sense of letting go and getting off the grid” Gary O’Hagan, Chairman and CEO of Goan Sports, played football as an offensive lineman at Boston College and has been coming to Waterville for 35 years. He started coming when a group of Irish-American friends of his from Salomon Brothers bought the property in 1986. He has been a member for 25 years and says “In Waterville you have the ability to participate in

three levels of friendship; old friends and friendships renewed, new friends and local Waterville resident friends.” Gary also adds “making friends is a fine art and those relationships are valuable in every aspect of life. This is one of the greatest facilities and places to enable people to make those friendships”. Gary’s guest for the two-day tournament, Tim O’Shea, is a former Boston College basketball player and is now the basketball coach at Bryant University in Smithfield Rhode Island. This is his second time attending the member-guest and comments “I am blown away by how beautiful it is here and right now Newport, RI where I live is very beautiful but this is unique. It is special, there is nothing like it.” The course and area are steeped in history and one hole on the course in particular has great significance, the 12th hole a Par 3, called “The Mass Hole”. In the 18th century the celebration of Catholic mass was punishable by death in Ireland forcing the local population to use the secluded valley in front of this green to hold their services. To this day it has significant meaning and on special occasions mass is held there in the valley of the 12th hole. The Waterville House is an 18th century Georgian Manor house that sits on a narrow isthmus facing the wild Atlantic Ocean with beautiful Lough Currane on its eastern perimeter. The Currane River bisects the 50-acre estate as

it flows into Ballinskelligs Bay. The manor was built by the Butler family in 1790 and the estate was called “Waterville”. The charm of this 13-bedroom estate and the staff are as world renowned as the golf course. Guests of the Waterville House have the advantage of preferred tee times, access to fishing the famous Butler’s Pool known for its salmon and the private driving range and practice facility designed by Tom Fazio. Membership definitely has its privileges and the list of international members is growing as more people experience this extraordinary slice of heaven in Ireland.

“Mad Dog” Russo is an ACE ON THE COURSE by John Molori

Multimedia sports personality Chris Russo is known for his edgy commentary and unbridled opinions, but the man they call “Mad Dog” was never more excited than he was on May 20 at Shorehaven Golf Club in Norwalk, CT. Let’s let him tell the story. “It was a really competitive tournament. Twenty-eight teams were vying for fifteen spots in the finals. I was not playing well at all heading to the 15th hole. It was 154 yards downhill. I knew I hit it at the perfect height. The ball hit the top of a ledge and started to crawl downhill and into the hole. It was my first ever hole-in-one!” Following this momentous feat, Russo felt even more pressure. “I really had to play well the next three holes. You don’t want to ruin a hole-in-one like that. I bogied, bogied, and double-bogeyed, and we went all the way to the finals!” A 20 handicap, Russo began his sports media career in Florida, but rose to national fame with Mike Francesa on the “Mike and the Mad Dog” show at WFAN Radio in New York. The influential and groundbreaking program aired from 1989-2008. These days, he headlines SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio channel where he hosts “Mad Dog Unleashed, weekdays 3-6pm. He also hosts “High Heat”, weekday afternoons on MLB Network. Russo and Francesa are currently nomi-

nated for the National Radio Hall of Fame in the Spoken Word category. Past inductees include Rush Limbaugh, Howard Stern, and Larry King. Says Russo, “It is a fan vote so I am not sure how it will go, but it would be a terrific honor for sure. We were on the air from 1989 to 2008. Those were great years.” Indeed, both Russo’s career and golf game improved when he got to the Big Apple. “I started playing as a kid, and went to Hilton Head a couple of times. When I started working in New York City in 1988, I got more into it. I joined Shorehaven in 2003. That was great because I now had a place to go play.” Among Russo’s favorite courses are Newport Country Club, Sankaty Head on Nantucket, Maidstone and Shinnecock on Long Island, Pebble Beach, and Cypress. He adds, “Obviously I would love to play places like Pine Valley and

Augusta, and I would love to get over to Ireland and play Kingsbarns in Scotland.” With a family and busy media career, Russo has to find time for his golf fix. “I’ve gotten out there about eight or nine times so far this year. The biggest challenge for me is my hole-byhole inconsistency. In golf, you can get off the tracks on the same hole. When I play well, I play consistently.” Russo has played alongside sports legends such as Brett Favre Jim Palmer, but he has his own golf media etiquette. He explains, “I never talk shop on the course. Those guys don’t need to be interviewed when they are playing golf. “I once played in Palm Springs with (former MLB manager) Gene Mauch. He started talking about his biggest regret in baseball, blowing a 10 game lead in 1964 with the Phillies. Mauch was a great golfer and guy. He actually set up our game through a mutual friend, the late Jim Karvellas, the former Knicks’ announcer. I was just a young broadcaster at the time and I appreciated that.” A passionate golfer, Russo actually took some chipping lessons leading into his hole-in-one tour-

I always seem to play better in tournaments when there is something on the line. I am very competitive out there. A VERY GOOD DAY FOR DUSTIN JOHNSON, A VERY BAD DAY FOR THE USGA by Jack Ross

When a USGA official pulled Dustin Johnson aside on the 12th hole of the final round of the U.S. Open last month, the marquee player who had seen several majors slip from his grasp in cruel ways must have experienced a déjà vu sensation. Six years earlier, Johnson had lost a chance at the PGA Championship when he was penalized for grounding his club in a rugged area strewn with footprints that turned out to be a bunker. Now, at Oakmont, he was told that officials had reviewed the situation on the 5th green where Johnson’s ball had moved slightly as he was preparing to putt, and that that a 1-stroke penalty was being considered. The conversation between the USGA and Johnson created a rules snafu that cast a pall of uncertainty over the remainder of the championship. At that point, Johnson and Shane Lowry were neck and neck, and other players were in contention. The problem was that no one knew whether the number posted next to Johnson’s name on the scoreboard was accurate – fairly important information for the competitors, not to mention the millions of fans watching the Fox broadcast. On the 5th green, Johnson had taken his stance and taken a couple of practice swings during which his putter did not touch

the ground, then moved his putter behind the ball – again without contacting the ground. He noticed his ball move slightly, backed away, and summoned an official. Johnson told the official he did not do anything to cause the ball the move; the official concurred and directed him to proceed to putt. The situation highlighted a 2016 change to Rule 18-2. Formerly, under Rule 18-2b, a player was deemed to have caused a ball to move if it moved after address. That rule was considered overly punitive when balls moved on extremely fast and sloped greens, particularly in heavy winds. A 2012 revision added an exception if it was clear that some other factor, such as wind, caused a ball to move after address. However, the 2016 revisions eliminated Rule 18-2b altogether. Under the revised rules, whenever a ball at rest moves, all of the facts and circumstances must be taken into account to determine whether it is “more likely than not” that the player caused the movement. Contrary to the opinions expressed by a number of players and

commentators, the USGA was not bound by Johnson’s judgment, and was within its right to review the videotape. The USGA certainly was not blind to the fact that, in an earlier round, Lowry had called a penalty on himself in similar circumstances. After reviewing videotape, USGA rules officials determined that, after taking the practice strokes, Johnson momentarily grounded his putter next to the ball, and concluded that such action likely caused the ball movement. When advised of this on the 12th hole, Johnson adhered to his position that he did not think he caused the ball to move. At that point, the USGA had all the information it needed, and should have ruled that Johnson incurred a 1-stroke penalty. But instead, it deferred making a ruling, leaving players uncertain of Johnson’s score. The USGA’s explanation for the delay – that it wanted to discuss the matter with Johnson after the round – bordered on the absurd. The USGA official who appeared on the telecast all but admitted that they had made their decision; there was absolutely nothing to be gained from additional discussion. When the 2016 rules revisions were announced, Thomas Pagel, Director of Rules of Golf and Amateur Status for the USGA, noted that the repeal of Rule 18-2b would eliminate some unfair penalties but also would create some uncertainty and put pressure on players and rules officials to make difficult judgments. His words rang prophetic at Oakmont. The specter of one rules official initially absolving the player, only to be overruled after a close examination of videotape which did not conclusively demonstrate that Johnson caused the ball movement, did not sit well with players and many members of the media. Furthermore, reports had surfaced at Oakmont that some greens were running at an unprecedented 15 on the Stimpmeter, and that players were seeing balls move on greens after they came to rest. Under these extreme circumstances, it is certainly possible that Johnson’s ball moved spontaneously. The USGA was spared from catastrophe only because Lowry and other competitors faded down the stretch, and Johnson holed out on 18 with a birdie that gave him a 4-stroke lead

– until the penalty reduced it to three strokes. Imagine if he had led by only a stroke or been tied, and lost the championship on account of the videotape review. Ghosts of Whistling Straits would have been swirling around the USGA tent. Would the rules officials have had the courage of their convictions to assess the penalty in that case? We’ll never know. But even allowing the USGA the benefit of the doubt under the “more likely than not” standard, under which the imposition of a penalty does not have to be “free from doubt,” there was no excuse for deferring to make the call until after Johnson’s round and keeping him, and his competitors, in scoring limbo. As Bill Pennington of the New York Times aptly observed: “A scoreboard is not supposed to be just an estimation of who is leading and by how much.” Sunday at Oakmont will be remembered as Johnson’s long overdue breakthrough in adding a major title to his resume, but will not be remembered as the USGA’s finest day. On the day after the championship, the USGA stated that it regretted the distraction caused by its decision to wait until the end or the round to decide on the ruling. The USGA admitted that its action created “unnecessary ambiguity” for Johnson, other players, and spectators, and indicated that it will review its procedures for the timing of video review and communication with players. Good idea. However, the USGA did not back off its decision to impose the penalty, noting that the ball moved almost immediately after Johnson’s putter contacted the ground. Fine. But if they were so sure, they should have assessed the penalty immediately.

James Driscoll is in the field of the Web. Com Tour’s Air Capital Classic in Wichita Kansas this week with his Nashville Golf Open winning trophy, a guitar, and sporting Mohawk haircut and attitude. Driscoll’s second win last week was over thirteen years in the making. His first win came in the 2004 Virginia Beach Open in his first full season on the Web.Com Tour. Looking more like an Australian tour guide than a golfer, his new attitude obviously paid off in Nashville as Driscoll’s turned a corner last week. In his fourth round at the Nashville Golf & Athletic Club when he went 4 under par over a three hole stretch that included an eagle from 160 yards on the par 4 12th hole. James finished strong posting rounds of 65, 68, 69, 67 for a -19/269 total

and three shots clear of the field. He earned the $99,000 winning check and guitar. I had given Driscoll, the 38 year old Boston native, the moniker of ‘New Ironman’ a couple of years ago based on his relentless grinding on the tours. Dana Quigly a Lynnfield Massachusetts native and PGA Tour Champions player is the original Ironman playing 278 consecutive professional events over a nine year stretch. Driscoll turned professional in 2001 and has made a total of 395 starts on both the PGA and Web.Com tours through Nashville. A testament to his perseverance, New Ironman has made a total 272 cuts. Driscoll has relentlessly worked to improve his golf swing and game over the years to with little

I think that's something I've been dealing with for a long time and haven't really realized it until recently. I kept trying too hard and I just got to let go and let the subconscious take over and things fall into place," Driscoll told reporters With so much talent and a Team New England workhorse, I hope James continues to trust what he already has in his subconscious mind. As long as he stays out of his own way, he’ll find that corner he turned in Nashville will lead to victory and it won’t take thirteen years. Congratulations James. Keep it fluid. If you think youʼre going to play at your best without properly warming up your body, youʼre wrong. If your body isnʼt prepped for 18 holes of golf, in a best case scenario youʼre not going to play as well as you can. Worst case scenario, youʼre going to get hurt. If you know anything about me, you know that Iʼm all about optimizing the body for the sport of golf. The workouts, exercises, and drills I do with my players are designed to make sure that they can play to the best of their ability. If youʼve been doing my program at home youʼve also been pretty busy changing your body. But to make su that all of that hard work transfers over to the golf course, you need to make sure that your new body is ready to go sure play 18 holes.

Leg Swings

To loosen up the muscles around the hips in a very linear way — weʼll get to rotational moves later — stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Shift your weight slightly so that most of your weight is on your left leg and you can lift your right foot off the ground without bending at the knee. Think of your right leg as a pendulum. Keeping the leg straight, swing it directly in front of you — think 12:00 on a clock — then let the momentum of the move swing the leg directly in back of you to 6:00. Every time the leg goes back to 6:00 is one rep. Do five reps on each leg. Now — while still facing forward — do the f 3:00 to 9:00. Do five complete side-to-side swings on each leg. Run through this series of same thing swinging the leg from swings twice. If youʼre having trouble with your balance, you can stabilize yourself with one of your clubs. Eventually, though, try to get to the point where you can do this without any balance aid.

Prisoner Squats

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Your knees and toes should be pointing forward. Place your hands gently behind your head with your elbows flared out to the sides. Ideally, you wonʼt be able to see your own elbows when youʼre in this position. (That said, donʼt apply too much pressure to the back of your head to get into this position. Your neck wonʼt like you.) Slowly kick your hips back, bend your knees, and lower yourself as if you were sitting into an imaginary chair. Try not to let your knees slide forward. Keep them aligned over your heels or mid-foot. When your thighs are parallel to the ground, drive through your heels back into the starting position to complete the rep. Do two sets of ten reps. Youʼve worked hard off-the-course to get your body in condition to play its best golf. The final step is to make sure that youʼll be able to use those gains out on the course. This simple warm-up series will help keep you injury-free and will let you have a lot more fun and success when you play.

It goes without saying every golfer needs a bag and in fact if we are fortunate to play regularly a replacement may be needed fairly often. Bags take a lot of abuse…in and out of car trunks, banging around on the back of a cart or if carried, being picked up and put down dozens of times a round not to mention having to withstand rainy, windy and even sometimes snowy weather. Does Walking Improve Your Score? By Ed Travis Golf is great exercise for everyone and especially for those of us who lead sedentary lives sitting in front of a computer. The PGA of America is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and Ludlow, Vermont’s Jim Remy, a past president, represents what has made this a thriving organization of more than 27,000 professionals. Currently the VP and GM of the Okemo Golf Division at Okemo Valley GC, he has worked at one of New England’s leading ski and golf facilities since 1997. Remy became the first New England PGA Section member to become president when he was elected in 2008. He promoted both the business aspect of the profession and the fitness and healthy lifestyle that the sport can provide. Remy has served the NE PGA Section in almost every capacity and was its president from 199597. He was the 1997 NE PGA Golf Professional of the Year and was inducted into the NE PGA Section Hall of Fame in 2008. Remy and his wife, Darlene, live in Ludlow and have a daughter, Niki.

NEGM: What was most important to you as you were growing up?

JR: I grew up in Leominster [MA] and played football and baseball on the Blue Devils high school teams. At 12, I started skiing and fell in love with it. During the summer, I played golf at a little nine-hole course called Grandview. I was involved in sports all four seasons. Sports, sports, sports. That’s all I wanted to do. After I graduated from high school, I told my mom I was going to Vermont to teach skiing for a year and then I’d go to college. That was 43 years ago, and I’m still in Vermont.

NEGM: How did you become a golf professional?

JR: I was a professional ski instructor in Ludlow and a racer for the US Pro Ski Tour in the 1970’s. After about seven years, I knew I needed a dependable summer job so I asked PGA pro Ed Bellow at the nearby Fox Run GC, “What do I have to do to become a golf pro?” I entered the PGA golf professional program and got my first assistant job at Worcester CC [MA], and I found my dream. The combination of skiing in the winter

and golf in the summer just worked out perfectly. My apprenticeship continued at Mt. Pleasant CC in Boylston [MA], and when I got my Class A card, I became the head professional at Killington Golf Resort and the Director of Ski Competitions. I worked there for 13 years before returning to Ludlow in 1997 to help build the Okemo Valley Golf Course.

NEGM: How has the PGA of America evolved since you became a member?

JR: The PGA has always been evolving, but it always sticks to its original goals—to grow the sport of golf and to improve the standards of the profession. The 27,000 men and women of today have made the PGA a much larger and a much healthier organization than when I first joined it. I think we have taken on more of a business role as we try to grow the game. We’ve seen a downturn in the last 8-10 years. We’ve seen a generation go away from golf, and the PGA has taken the lead—through the PGA Junior League, Get Golf Ready, and Play Golf America among other programs—to rekindle that interest in a great

NEGM: What was your main focus as President of the PGA of America?

JR: My two years as President, 2009-10, were a very trying period for the organization and its members as we were going through a severe recession. I was a members’ president. I’m a grass roots guy—a club pro in Vermont. Simply, I was a golf pro just as they were. I had to try to keep people positive, moving forward in the business. I talked a lot—including to CBS Sports commentator Jim Nantz—about the health and welfare inherent in the sport and what’s good about it and why people should play golf. People who play

golf live longer; kids who grow up in golf become good people. We all learn responsibility, honor, ethics, and other wholesome characteristics through the playing of golf.

NEGM: In 2011, why did you propose the posthumous induction of John Shippen, Ted Rhodes and Bill Spiller as PGA members and heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis as a posthumous Honorary PGA member? JR: One of my greatest and proudest moments of being a PGA member and a PGA officer was that occasion in New Orleans when we recognized these four African-American pioneers who made a huge difference in the direction of

American golf. I apologized to the four families that it took so long to induct those men. It should have been done a long time ago. It was a moving day. Joe Louis was an avid golfer. He did so much for golf, due to his celebrity status, and he started to break down that race barrier. Because Joe was not a golf professional, like the other three men, he had to receive an honorary membership.

NEGM: What are your favorite NE courses? Favorites around the country and world?

JR: Okemo Valley, Worcester CC, Ekwanok CC [in Manchester, VT], and The Country Club [Brookline, MA]. Cypress Point, Augusta National, The Old Course at St. Andrews, and all the unheard of but magnificent courses in Scotland.

NEGM: Who would be in your Dream Foursome of today? In your Dream Foursome for the ages? JR: I just love the Irish boys, having spent a lot of time with them at the Ryder Cups: Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke, and

Rory McIlroy. President George W. Bush, his father President George H. W. Bush, and Arnold Palmer

NEGM: What does Davis Love have to do to get the Ryder Cup back to American soil?

JR: I’ve been to six Ryder Cups and have been involved with four as an officer of the PGA. These are the greatest players in the world, and any captain just needs to give his team the opportunity to win and not get in the way. Davis Love was the captain at the heartbreak at Medinah in 2012, and I think he’s learned from that. He’ll be able to help his players to relax, have fun, play their best, and avoid the incredible tension of the competition. Each pro has to embrace the moment, much like Bubba Watson on the first tee at Medinah when he got the fans involved. He embraced the moment, and he got everyone motivated. AROUND THE GAME The Kittansett Club To Host 2022 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship Host of 1953 Walker Cup Match is awarded its second USGA championship The Kittansett Club in Marion, Mass., has been selected by the United States Golf Association (USGA) as the host site for the 2022 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. To be contested Aug. 27-Sept. 1, the 68th U.S. Senior Amateur will be the club’s second USGA championship and first since hosting the 1953 Walker Cup Match. “We are thrilled to announce our return to this truly exceptional seaside club,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “We look forward to a great test of golf for the world’s best senior amateur players and are confident this course will live up to expectations in identifying a worthy champion and providing a memorable experience for all.” Designed in 1922 by William Flynn and Fredric Hood, The Kittansett Club is located on a point extending into Buzzards Bay, across from Cape Cod. Since the 1990s, designer Gil Hanse has led an ongoing renovation project that included the removal of hundreds of trees to restore the course to its original coastal links design. Hanse is working from original Flynn drawings discovered in a barn in Philadelphia in 2001, where they sat for more than 70 years unknown to the club. Today, the course routing offers a combination of coastal holes and inland tree-lined holes. “On behalf of The Kittansett Club, we are honored to host the 68th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship,” said club president William Creevy. “It is very gratifying to see the club’s rich history culminate in the hosting of a USGA

championship in 2022, the same year we celebrate our 100-year anniversary. We look forward to giving back to the game of golf, and particularly celebrating amateur players by hosting this wonderful event.” In the 1953 Walker Cup Match, the USA defeated Great Britain & Ireland, 9-3. The 10-man USA Team featured eight USGA champions, including future U.S. Open champions Gene Littler (1961) and Ken Venturi (1964) and future USGA president William C. Campbell. The club has also hosted several USGA qualifying events, most recently for the 2013 U.S. Senior Open. The Kittansett Club has also hosted five Massachusetts State Amateur championships (1958, 1978, 1990, 1999 and 2008) and will host again in 2020.

VERONA, N.Y. (June 29, 2016) – Rich Berberian Jr., with his father’s “lesson of a lifetime” swirling in his head, rolled home a 33-foot uphill birdie putt on the 18th green to capture an improbable victory Wednesday in the 49th PGA Professional Championship at Atunyote Golf Club in Verona, New York. The closing dramatics by the 28-year-old PGA Assistant Professional at Windham Country Club in Derry, New Hampshire, capped a rollercoaster final seven holes where Berberian overcame a triple bogey on the 12th hole with birdies on holes No. 13, 16 and 18. He finished with a 3-under-par 69, a one-stroke triumph over Mark Brown of Oyster Bay, New York, and Omar Uresti of Austin, Texas, for a winning total of 11-under-par 277. Berberian is the secondyoungest PGA Professional Champion, trailing Howell Fraser, who was 15 days younger when upon claiming victory in 1968.

Berberian earned $75,000 and became just the second New England PGA Section Member to capture the Walter Hagen Cup in the nation’s largest all-professional championship since Bob Lendzion in 1986. “I had practice from the day before (with a double bogey),” said Berberian with a smirk. “My dad said to play one shot at a time. It’s easier to say it than to do it. I hit that shot so bad, so far left, I had to laugh. While Berberian was contemplating his next shot, his father, Richard Sr., was at home in Melbourne, Florida, watching the Championship on television and celebrating his 69th birthday. “I watched that last putt and was shocked,” said Berberian Sr. “I was expecting a two-putt, as it had to go over a hump in that green. It was the best feeling watching that, and it’s the best birthday present I could ever have.”

AROUND THE GAME CVS Health Charity Classic 2016 For the 18th consecutive year, Rhode Island golf pros Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon have hosted one of New England’s most popular golf tournaments. Rhode Island Country Club was the place to be as golf professionals from all three tours played in the CVS Health Charity Classic, a tournament that has raised over 20 million dollars for local charities. Some of golf’s greatest stars like Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Annika Sorenstam and Nick Price have answered the call to come participate in the CVS Health Charity Classic thrilling local golf fans and helping Rhode Island community organizations continue their fine work. Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon have enjoyed playing on their home turf, but neither has won the tournament. But after the first round of play was complete Andrade and Bill Hass, who is the son of Champion’s Tour golfer Jay Hass, combined for a score of 9 under par 62 tying Bryson DeChambeau and Lexi Thompson for the lead. It seemed like the winless streak for the local guys would finally be broken when Andrade and Hass completed the tournament with a very respectful two day total of 18 under par. But Jon Curran and Keegan Bradly, also finished at 18 under par to force a playoff. The duo of Bradley and Curran had won the CVS Classic in 2015, and they kept the trophy this year when Bradley sunk a 6 foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole. There was a great field at this year’s tourna-

ment including players like Paula Creamer, Louis Oosthuizen, and Lexi Thompson, but it was Jamie Sadlowski that drew the largest galleries. Sadlowski is the two-time long drive champ. In competition he has hit drives an astonishing 435 yards. I spoke to him when he completed his pro-am round.

N.E.G.M.: When you play in Pro-Ams do you ever get tired of your partners asking you to crush a couple of 400 yard drives ? J.S.: Oh yes. I played two ProAms today and hit the driver 25 times. They still wanted to see more.

N.E.G.M : Are they asking for tips on how to hit the long bs.: On every hole. I tell them the key is to be loose. Relax your arms and concentrate on keeping your balance and make an easy and full turn.

N.E.G.M. What happens then?

J.S. : They swing like mad and top the ball.

N.E.G.M. : Are you going to try to qualify for the British Open ? J.S.: No I have a lot of corporate events scheduled and then I am going to give Q school a shot.

N.E.G.M.: Any advice for our readers ?

J.S.: The equipment makes it easy for everybody to get extra distance. Before you hit the first tee take some swings with your feet close together. If you can hit a ball with your feet touching and maintain your balance you have good tempo. Hit your driver with that same easy tempo and you will be amazed at how many more yards you can pick up.

During the second round of this year’s Memorial Tournament Matt Kuchar hit a beautiful approach shot that was covering the flag. It should have landed close to the hole and given Kuchar a very makeable birdie putt. Bay Club Cultivates an Inclusive, Luxurious Lifestyle in One of New England’s Premier Golf Communities By Leigh MacKay

“When you show up at the Bay Club, you just feel special. And that’s really nice. Everyone working there knows your name, and they are all steeped in the tradition of personal service. The Bay Club is just an incredibly classy, casual, and accommodating place.” Jim Craig, the All-American goalie for Boston University who stopped 39 shots against the Soviet Union’s “unbeatable” hockey team in the 1980 Winter Olympics’ “Miracle on Ice,” has been a longtime member of the Bay Club and a low-handicap golfer. When I interviewed him for a “Celebrity Golfer” column two years ago, Jim raved about the Bay Club and how much he ap84 | golfhomesweekly.com | July 2016

preciated the championship golf course and his overall experience there. When we talked recently, he reiterated what makes the Club exceptional. Jim said, “One of the best things is that the original vision of the founders back in 2004—to ensure a pleasurable country club lifestyle for everyone—has been carried out. The Bay Club has a diverse group of members who pursue various activities here. Not all the members play golf. In fact, if you were to ask any five members what they enjoy most about the Club, you could get five completely different answers.” The Bay Club Community The Bay Club is a campus-style, member-owned private club

Encompassing 625 acres with an additional 238 acres of adjacent conservation land, the Bay Club is located among old forests on the South Coast of Massachusetts in the seaside town of Mattapoisett on Buzzards Bay. The area is renowned for its deepwater harbor that allows for sailing, cruising, kayaking, and fishing. Appropriately, the logo of the Bay Club is a seahorse holding crossed golf clubs in its tail. Just off I-195 on the road to Cape Cod and one hour south of Boston and a half hour east of Providence, the community consists of six residential villages of up to 189 home sites that occupy 225 acres. The remaining acreage is reserved for the country club and open space. Membership is by invitation through an application process, including sponsorship by two current members. Members do not have to own or build a home within the Bay Club, and, conversely, homeowners may or may not choose to be members of the Club. The Club currently has 220 golf members and 80 social members, who have access to all amenities except golf. The goal is 275 and 100. Golf dues are $12,750 for a family membership and $9,050 for an individual and $6,375 for a family social membership and $5,775 for an individual. A $35,000 refundable deposit is required of all golf members, with non-refundable initiation fees of $12,500 and $9,375 for family and individual social members, respectively. The Bay Club offers either 2- and 3-bedroom single-family homes or the purchase of a home site on which to build a custom home with one of the Preferred Builders. Home sites range in size from 1/3 to 1+ acre with prices starting at $187,000 to $395,000 depending on size, location, and proximity to the golf course. The Preserve is the newest village at the Club, a Nantucket style-development of homes from 1,850 to 2,840 square feet. The Club will soon be building its first attached housing community, consisting of 10 two-family townhome units. All Bay Club property owners are members of the community-wide homeowners’ association. Brad Faxon’s Championship Golf Course The centerpiece of the gated community is the golf course, an immaculately conditioned, par-71 layout with bentgrass greens and fairways. A classic New England parkland design

with the six sets of tees allows for play of 7008 yards from the tips to 5080 yards from the forwards. The perfectly maintained greens usually stimp at 10 or 10.5 for the members but can roll out to 12 or more for tournament play. The Bay Club is only one of two Massachusetts’ courses to receive Audubon International’s Certified Silver Signature Sanctuary status for sustaining natural environmental habitat and wildlife conservation through efficient water, chemical, and energy use. Superintendent Jon O’Connor is the man responsible for maintaining the course’s pristine conditions and the Audubon’s Sanctuary status. PGA Tour professional Brad Faxon, a favorite New England local son from Rhode Island, who partnered with golf course architect Brad Booth, was told in 2002, before a shovel had touched any of the 625 acres, to “Route the course as you see fit.” As Director of Golf and PGA professional Greg Yeomans, who has been at the Club since it opened in 2004, related, “What was intriguing for Brad was that he had all this land, where he could scout the terrain, get the elevation points, imagine the possibilities, and then fashion the 18 holes from a blank canvas. “What Brad created was an extremely playable, member-friendly layout with a challenging variety of holes in which not one is like another. Yes, the greens are fast, but they are relatively flat, although very large. We have about 80 bunkers that are strategically placed but are not penal to the average-skill-level player. We really don’t have any forced carries over water. The water hazards are more of a visual aspect and don’t come into play. July 2016 | golfhomesweekly.com | 85

It’s all about lateral hazards, where nine holes have red stakes either behind the green or off to the side. Just as importantly, from the back tees, the course is a great test when we host a quality event like the PGA Pro-Assistant Championship, which we have done for the last nine years, or the Mass Am or Mass Open or US Senior Open qualifiers. Bay Club members take great pride in sharing their course with outside tournaments and organizations like the USGA, NEPGA, MGA, WGAM, and AJGA. We also take great pride in cultivating our own juniors, an endeavor that has been growing steadily each year.” Outstanding Practice Facilities Jim Craig, who launched his own company in 2007, Gold Medal Strategies, and became a motivational speaker stressing how to attain peak performance in life or business, made me promise that I would write about the Bay Club’s practice facilities, which he said are “incredible.” Well, Jim, if as a golfer you want to attain peak performance by working on your game, yes, the Club’s practice facilities are a great place to visit. There is an expansive 310-yard double-

ended range, with the far end of the range reserved for lessons. Synthetic turf is available so if bad weather or unplayable turf hampers practice, members can still hit balls. There is a chipping area and a large putting green. A monstrous Himalayas putting green with mountains of slope, modeled after the one at St. Andrews, has been built behind the main range. This green brings families, juniors, and members together for fun competitions and contests. At the back of the range and out of sight from the front end is the two-acre Short Game Area. A two-tiered green has five pins on it with three practice bunkers nearby. Players can practice every type of shot they want from 100 yards in. During the winter, the Club opens up its three indoor hitting bays, its 40 foot putting carpet, and its chipping mat. A Trackman-type simulator can be used in the hitting bays to record clubhead speed, ball direction, and swing path stats. The professional staff is on hand to give lessons as well. In addition, the pros sponsor three trips each winter: two golf schools in Florida, one for men and the other for women; a mixed golf trip to Casa de Campo and the

The Sports and Activities Center If the golf course is the centerpiece, the Club’s Sports and Activities Center is unique among other private clubs along the South Coast. In this building, members are offered state-of-the-art training facilities, fitness instruction, conditioning and exercise programs under the guidance of the full-time fitness director, Dave Maloney. Dave is also a certified Titleist Performance Institute instructor, which means he shows the members how the human body functions in relation to their golf swings. Thus, Dave works closely with the teaching/coaching/and clinic efforts of Greg Yeomans and head professional John Paesani. The Center also has a large demonstration kitchen with meeting space where monthly cooking demonstrations and classes are conducted by Executive Chef Jim Mercer or visiting chefs. In addition the room is used by members for private parties, cultural activities, lectures, and clubs. Adjacent to the Center is the aquatics area. The pool complex has a junior Olympic-sized pool with five lap lanes and a child-friendly entry. Life guards and pool-side food and beverage services are available during the summer. Also available in summer for the children

is Club Seahorse, which, depending on the child’s age, provides activities, games, swimming, golf, tennis, fitness, and nutrition programs. The Club also has racquet sports with four Har-Tru Hydro tennis courts, two with lights for night play, and two platform tennis courts, both with lights as well. A full schedule of casual and competitive events is offered throughout the season as well as clinics and private lessons provided by Director of Tennis Chris Shannon and his staff. The Dining Experience I had lunch at the Golf House Restaurant on the patio near the first tee with Richard Spearbeck, the Food and Beverage Manager, just after he had attended to the Ladies’ Day luncheon. The women had had a lovely day for golf and were most enthusiastic about their teams’ performances. They savored Chef Jim Mercer’s entrees as the winners were announced. Richard said, “I really enjoy working in a venue that’s been generated with the campus atmosphere that we have at the Bay Club, from the Summer Shack at the pool to the restaurant here to the Halfway Café off the ninth green, where we can cater private member parties. Jim’s international theme dinners are

remarkable, and he is constantly sharing his ‘cooking secrets’ with the membership, especially at the demonstration kitchen in the Activities Center. Jim and I have the chance to create all sorts of food and drink specialties, depending upon the function and the location of the event. “For example, the Summer Shack is mainly for the children, but we are trying to integrate it into a venue for mothers and grandmothers who around dinner time might like a glass of wine and an appetizing cheese

board. We’ve added a cookout by the pool that we’ll do monthly during the summer. And we’ve got the 4th of July celebration on our schedule, which is a huge family night for food, drink, and fireworks. “Jim is a multi-talented chef who can prepare the most delicious family-style meals, and he pairs his entrees with some delightful wines. He uses the freshest produce on the South Coast from Eva’s Garden in nearby Dartmouth to make his ‘Eva’s Salad’ and his veggie dishes. Plus, we order as much food as possible from our local vendors, especially our fish, which comes to us right off the boat.
