A Time for Giving and Planning The 2016 golf season in New England is slowly winding down as we head into the holiday season. Once again, the Fall weather here in the Northeast has allowed us an extended golf season with courses throughout the region maintaining excellent playing conditions. With Daylight Savings Time the first week of November, our daylight is now much shorter, which cuts into our afternoon playing time. It has been another year of first time winners on the PGA Tour, with a total of 15 first timers; a sign of parody that has become obvious since the Tiger Woods era of domination ended. Woods, if he ever returns to form, needs 3 wins to overtake Sam Snead as all- time leader in Tour wins with 82. If Tiger’s body heals and he can regain a clear focused mind, he will win again. Accepting what once was and may never be again, will be the largest hurdle for both him and his fans. Most golfers under 40 years old believe it was Tiger Woods who had the greatest impact on golf history. There will be only one person who holds this esteemed crown, The King himself, Arnold Palmer. On September 25th, 2016, back home in Latrobe, PA., Mr. Palmer passed away and left the entire golf world with a broken heart. Arnie truly was the most loved player in the history of the game. His passing was almost 50 years to the day that he beat Jack Nicklaus in the Thunderbird Classic in a playoff at Westchester Country Club in Rye, NY for his 52nd PGA Tour victory. There will never be another “King” in the game of golf. Arnold Palmer’s love for the game, his passion for life and people made him the most approachable golfer of all time. We will miss you very much Arnie. Next March, just a few weeks before the Masters, The Arnold Palmer Invitational will take place at The Bay Hill Country Club and Lodge in Orlando,FL. for the 50th year, and for the first time without Mr. Palmer hosting the event. If you have never attended this event, you may want to be in Orlando that week to join “Arnie’s Army” in a final farewell to the King.

CREATIVE VISION BECOMES GOLF SENSATION: ALABAMA’S RTJ GOLF TRAIL TURNS 25
A former law professor in Alabama revolutionized access to great public golf 25 years ago and the rest is history. While many scoffed at the concept, Dr. David G. Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, brought golf course architect Robert Trent Jones out of retirement in the late 1980’s and the concept of America’s Original Golf Trail was born. Opened in 1992, nearly 12 million rounds of golf have been played along the RTJ Golf Trail. With 26 courses on 11 sites across Alabama, this top golf destination has renovated its original courses and encourages golfers to come play the new RTJ Golf Trail. While maintaining the key course designs created by Robert Trent Jones, renovations of the
original golf sites were recently completed. Owned by the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the RTJ courses remain consistent for quality and value while offering new experiences. “I want to be able to play the U.S. Open on any one of these courses we build,” said Dr. David G. Bronner. “Make every one of them a championship course. I want people to be challenged enough that they will want to come back and try again.” While the courses have not hosted the U.S. Open yet, the PGA TOUR professions will compete in the Barbasol Championship at RTJ Grand National this July. Courses in Mobile and Prattville have hosted several LPGA tournaments. PGA TOUR Champions’ tourna-

Dr. Bronner has been honored by the golf industry for his vision to make great golf available to both professionals and the general public. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail continues to be one of Alabama’s tourist attractions with guests coming from around the world. The Trail’s artfully designed and beautifully landscaped courses, according to The New York Times, are “some of the best public golf on earth.” The Wall Street Journal said the Trail

Brimstone Hill Fortress is the place to explore its history. Kittitian Hill is a master plan community with a philosophy of sustainability for distinguishing residents and guests. Built into the rain forest on the highest allowable spot of the island, the panoramic view is nothing short of incredible. The Irie Fields Golf Course there has become a must play on the island. Christophe Harbour, the only private marina community with a beach club is developing a Tom Fazio course scheduled to open in 2017. The downtown capitol, Basterre is abuzz with eager visitors. Sail on a Hobie Cat or glide silently on the electric powered Funcat with fingertip control. All water toys are inclusive. A few minutes away Little Harbour has dedicated slips for Abaco Club members’ boats. At Pete’s Pub and Gallery Charlie might take you fishing on his dingy to catch some conch. Or call his buddy Captain Mark at the Treasure Cay Beach, Marina and Golf Resort for a charter cruise. Stop by No Name Cay to feed the pigs or by Guana Cay to hand feed the manta rays as their velvet skin tickles your toes. You never know day to day what you’ll see in the sea, perhaps dolphins or whales or flying fish. Our biggest thrill with Captain Mark was deep sea trolling. Wahoo! -We caught two very impressive wahoo fish that the chef prepared for us. Treasure Cay suites are more affordable and the inland public course is a fun run but golf might be secondary in the Abacos where sugar white sand beaches make for romantic strolls. And like Darren Clarke says, “Fishing is more fun.” www.myoutislands.com Dominican Republic - In Punta Cana, the Tom Fazio designed Corales Golf Club manifests Caribbean golf with 6 of the holes on bluffs overlooking the Bay of Corales. Great golf is minutes away in either direction. Two Nicklaus courses stand out among the many. The Troon man-
aged One and Only Palmilla Golf Club with three nines - the Mountain, Ocean and Arroyos, is challenging and thrilling. The Ocean climax is where number 3’s green teases the beach with perhaps a yacht on the water and mansions perched above. As the sun rises at Quivira, golfers warm up with burritos on the range, watching the Cabo armada of fishing boats speed out to sea. A long curvy mountain climb of 275 feet seems almost endless to the top of the granite cliffs and number 5 where the only visible point of the layout is a postage stamp green far below, jutting over the water. Quivira shares a private golden beach with two of the four all-inclusive Pueblo Bonito Pacifica hotels. Only members and guests of these hotels are permitted to play the exclusive Quivira. For ultimate modern luxury, The Cape a Thompson Hotel is set in a surfer’s cove encircled by stone outcroppings with a sunrise/sunset view of the famous arch and lover’s beach. Sail or boat around the arch, snorkel, dive, fish and whale watch from November to April. Unique artisan gifts abound in several art and shopping districts. In San Jose del Cabo a 1730 Mission is the focal point of the plaza. Puerto Rico is an island roughly the size of Connecticut with over 20 golf courses. The Gran Melia is an elegant seaside resort in a natural reserve close to all activities and adjacent to the Trump International Golf Club, where the Puerto Rico Open was previously held. Comical Chi Chi Rodriquez was the ambassador for that event and for all of Puerto Rico. He asked us, “How do you keep a blonde in suspense?” And then he answered with, “I’ll tell you tomorrow.” Ba dump bump. Robert Trent Jones II is a friend of Chi Chi’s and designer of the course at Bahia Beach Resort and Golf Club where he joined us for a few holes sharing his philosophy and poetry. Rio Mar has challenging, yet fair designs with iguanas throughout. El Conquistador is perched overlooking the Arthur Hills designed roller coaster course with 200 feet elevation changes. It follows the contour of the jungle forest with sporadic views of the sea and Palomino Island. The brilliant Belt of Orion illuminates the Puerto Rican night sky while Bio Bay delivers water luminescence in Laguna Grande. A nighttime kayak journey under the mangroves is a real life Disney thrill as millions of microorganisms flash florescent through the water. Perhaps the best of the island is Royal Isabela, a golfer’s paradise set on the cliffs by Stanley and Charles Pasarrel of tennis fame in collaboration with David W. Pfaff. Mother Nature is also listed under “designed by” on the scorecard, and rightly so as panoramic views 300 feet above the roaring waves and native landscaping deliver golf with unbridled fury. This

Thailand delivers royal treatment. Happy uniformed caddies, with large brimmed hats greet golfers at every course, a mandatory program that distinguishes Thailand. Thai Country Club counts among the panoramic plays and a swimming caddy retrieves water balls at Bangkok Sports Club. Arriving in Bangkok is like stepping over the rainbow. We never felt so tall or blond, but by sharing their greeting, we blended in - “savadeekah” for females or “savadeekup” for males, bow slightly with hands formed in the prayer sign – an act of respect and harmony

Celebrity Golfer:
NOTAH BEGAY, III by Leigh MacKay
With his intimate knowledge of the game and its players and his incisive commentary, Notah Begay has become one of the most recognizable analysts on NBC Sports and Golf Channel broadcasts. From his debut as a parttime commentator in 2010 to his full-time position in 2013 to his current celebrity status, Notah has distinguished himself both with his passion for the game and his passion for the improvement of American Indian communities. A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a full-blooded American Indian, Notah hopped the fence at Ladera Golf Course at the age of five and convinced the head pro to give him a job and teach him the game. He became one of the best junior players in the country and earned a golf scholarship to Stanford in 1990 where he graduated in 2005 with a degree in Economics—“still the most important thing I will ever accomplish in my career” he says on his website—and led the Cardinal golfers to the 1994 NCAA Championship, shooting a 62 in the second round, still the record-low score in the event.. The three-time All-American, who won the Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett CC in 1995, began his close friendship with Tiger Woods in the fall of 1994 when Tiger was a freshman, and then Notah turned pro shortly
after graduation. He shot a 59 in the 1998 NIKE Dominion Open and earned his PGA TOUR card in 1999, winning two tournaments in both his rookie and second years on TOUR. Paired with Tiger in the Presidents Cup in 2000, Notah went 3-2 and helped the U.S. claim victory. In 2001, his professional career came to an abrupt halt when he tore a disk in his back and was not pain free for seven years. During this time, he started his Notah Begay, III Foundation (NB3F) to serve American Indian youth and raise their standard of living. To date, he has raised millions of dollars to fund scholarships and other educational and wellness programs, and his foundation has served thousands of children and their families. In 2012, Notah received the Golf Writers Association of America’s Charlie Bartlett Award for his “unselfish contributions to the betterment of society.” Notah also owns a golf course development company, NB3 Consulting, and works with American Indian communities to develop world-class properties. I first met Notah in 2013 at the grand opening of his Sewailo Golf Course at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, one of the area’s most delightful and scenic courses and one of the most popular casinos. I interviewed Notah in September at the Deutsch Bank Championship.

NEGM: Why did you choose Stanford?
NB: I chose it for the academics. The golf program at the time wasn’t great, and the team had not made the NCAA championship for almost 20 years. I knew that a great education would serve me for a lifetime. I didn’t know when I arrived what a great school it was. Twenty years later I realize that a Stanford degree can really open up a lot of options.
NEGM: What did you enjoy most about playing professional golf?
NB: The friendships are what I enjoyed most. Plus, the travel included so many excellent venues. But first and foremost, I cherish all of the friends that I made around the world on both the U.S. Tour and the European Tour. And those places in Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, South America, and all parts of the United States were an education in themselves. I will never forget the historical traditions of those places. So, it was sort of like taking a world history class while playing golf, seeing how these places have evolved through exploration, religion, government, and economically.
NEGM: Your back injury forced you off the Tour.
How did you get into broadcasting?
NB: NBC Sports and Golf Channel Producer Tommy Roy. I got invited to do a couple of shows for “Live from the U.S. Open” and “Live from the Masters.” There were some opportunities opening up, and Tommy Roy thought I might be able to fill one. I got a tryout at the “Tiger World Challenge at Sherwood,” and I’m still here. Apparently something went right!
NEGM: What is the best part of the job?
NB: Being close to golf. Giving a first-hand accounting based upon all of my personal experiences as a player and trying to impart to the viewers what’s actually happening. We’re right there within an arm’s reach of the players. We have the unique opportunity to really describe what the players are dealing with. And then at some point, we can teach the viewers, and give them a piece of information that can help their own game. I think that’s a big part of what we do. One of the most interesting things about our viewers, or golf fans I should say, is that the vast majority of them play the game.
NEGM: What events do you especially like to cover?
NB: All the majors, of course, and the other big events like the WGC tournaments, but the Ryder Cup is at the top of the list. I never had

GOLF CONTENT NETWORK do. The design component of my role in the projects isn’t that large. My role is to work on behalf of the tribe to help them realize their overall economic model. All properties that we work with have a unique set of circumstances with regard to the population that they serve, how revenue is being driven, and how can golf, which is a huge asset for tribal nations, can help them be more productive and be more successful. With the unique design and environment that their golf courses can be built in, these tribal owned properties can offer golfers incredibly beautiful country—adding to the pristine nature of the experience for the individual golfer—along with creatively planned layouts.

the chance to play in one. I did play in the Presidents Cup. The Ryder Cup is the pinnacle of pressure; it is the pinnacle of competition. You really see players that rise to the occasion or get crushed by the circumstances.
NEGM: Why have you become so involved with education and health advocacy for American Indians and, as a result, have created the NB3F?
NB: Those are two really big failures to the overall well being of the American Indian community. The communities across America suffer extremely low rates of high school graduations, and they suffer extremely high rates of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses. My background and my career have given me the opportunity and the platform upon which to voice my concerns and ideas about how to address the issues.
NEGM: How did you get into golf course design?
NB: It’s something I’ve always wanted to
NB: My brother Clint, Tiger, and Jim Thorpe. Bobby Jones, Francis Ouimet, and Jack Nicklaus— because of what they have meant to U.S. golf.
NEGM: Why should every New England golfer visit New Mexico?
NB: Wonderful golf courses, naturally! And great value, exceptional regional traditions and cuisine, and marvelous diversity. You’ve got flatter, more links-type courses, you’ve got hilly, more elevated venues, and you’ve got superb vistas where you can see 400 miles off into the distance. I love the intrigue of the different designs. On top of all that, such a trip would provide a matchless cultural experience when not on the golf course.
NEGM: What goals or ambitions do you have for the future? NB: To continue to improve in my role as a golf analyst. To continue to be an advocate for the American Indian people in rebuilding our communities.

For sports media stars,
GOLF IS ALL ABOUT FAMILY by John Molori
The game of golf is about passion, perseverance, and patience, but for many sports media golfers, it is also about family. Playing the game with those you love is one of the truly special qualities of golf. A few Boston and national reporters explain how the game is definitely a family affair. Golf was passed down to WCVB-TV sports legend Mike Lynch from his father, Dick Lynch. Says Mike, “When I was a kid, my dad bought me a Billy Casper three wood at
Raymond’s in Lynn. I used to play at Salem Municipal and Happy Valley (now Gannon), and I was a caddy at Tedesco. I used to follow the railroad tracks behind my house which led right to the 15th hole.” Before joining WHDH-TV 7 as a reporter/anchor, Alex Corddry cut her sports broadcasting teeth as a reporter in Birmingham and Washington, DC, but her golf game goes back to
her Cabin John, Maryland childhood. “My mom would take me to the driving range with her and let me hit balls,” says Corddry. “I had a plastic learner set as my first set of clubs. I'm a lefty, so I've always been a fan of Phil Mickelson and have admired his career.” Boston TV veteran Mark Ockerbloom of
FOX25 also takes his golf roots in family. “I used my dad’s clubs for a while,” says the Winchester, MA native and Providence College grad. “Eventually, I got a set of Spalding Executives. “When I started doing morning sports radio at WGIR in New Hampshire, I began playing a bunch of Media Day tournaments. After the morning show, I would play a lot at Intervale Country Club in Manchester.”
NBC Sports star Kathryn Tappen has vividly fond memories of golf and family. She relates, “I grew up in Morristown, NJ and my parents were big golfers. It was so amazing to be able to spend hours on the course with my mom and dad. “They gave me great golf pointers, but what I remember most is stopping for a hot

dog at the ninth hole and the great conversations we had.”
Kevin Walsh of Comcast Sports Net New England and WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche both point to a fatherly golf influence – they also shattered some windows along the way. Says Walsh, “My dad was the first golfer in our family and he taught me how to play. I used to break the neighbors’ windows all the time, but they were golfers so they understood. I was seriously competing by age 10, broke 80 for the first time when I was 13 and 70 when I was 14.” Adds Roche, “My dad introduced me to the game, probably when I was 7 or 8 years old. It was more watching him play, and then just going into my backyard and hacking away. I broke a few windows along the way too.”
Author and 98.5 The Sports Hub host Tony Massarotti’s life heroes are his parents and two sisters, Norma and Elena. Fittingly, his golf life is all about family. “My wife Natalie and I are avid golfers,” he relates. “She got her first hole-in-one at Charter Oak Country Club in Hudson on a short par three. It's a family-friendly type of place, and the course is challenging but not ridiculous. “I’m excited about being able to play together as a family with my kids (Alexander and Xavier). It is a really nice thing to share golf with them.” John Molori is an author and columnist for numerous publications. Like him on Facebook at John Molori, Twitter @MoloriMedia. CRASH COURSE
Crash Course on Pitching
WITH MIKE HARBOUR, PGA
Pictured Mike Harbour at Metacomet CC. First hole with 2nd hole in background.
Shots on the golf course is the 25 to 75 yard shot. The first thing we do is to have our students place 75% of the weight on their lead leg ( if your right handed it’s on your left leg and if your left handed it will be on your right leg) next we decide how long your swing is going to be based on the length of your shot. We like to use the CLOCK as our example of how much of a backswing and follow thru you will use. For example, if you have a 25 yard shot you may use a swing say from 8 to 4 and if it’s 50 yards it may be a swing from 9 to 3 with your weight distribution remaining on your lead leg thru out your swing. Lastly we have you concentrate on rotating your chest thru the impact area to avoid using your arms and wrist to strike the ball, which usually results in a skull shot or fat shot.
Keys to Pitching: 1. Weight distribution 75% on lead leg 2. D ecide on length of backswing and follow thru using a CLOCK as your guide. 3. Rotate your shoulders and chest thru the impact area to your finish. atch the complete inW struction video and more at myNEGM.com/crashcourse

By Ed Travis and Golf Gear Weekly staff It’s the end of the year and time for our picks of the clubs in seven categories to receive the GolfGearWeekly.com Awards for 2016 season. There may be a couple of surprises for our readers with some of the selections however, our criteria in each category were very straight forward. First: was a unique and/or breakthrough design or material used? Second is the consistency of performance and distance and third the popularity with golfers. We did consider the market price of each in relation to comparable clubs from competitors but that wasn’t a determining factor. The cost of a club is really a measure of the price compared to the results it produces and that of course is subjective, different for each player and up to each to figure out. 58 | golfgearweeekly.com | November / December 2016

Callaway Golf A reshaped titanium alloy body with a 19% thinner face provides more forgiveness but the most evident feature of the XR16 is on the new stretched out crown. In consultation with the engineers at Boeing they came up with a reconfigured “Speed Step” to lessen the aerodynamic drag on the club during the downswing. The XR16 is lighter as well meaning it can be swung faster for more distance, a great combination with the loft and lie adjustability. Priced at $350 with a Fujikura Speeder Evolution 565 Shaft. Cobra King LTD At address this traditional looking shape doesn’t reveal all the technology and design features in the clubhead. A special carbon fiber crown is lighter than regular carbon fiber allowing the weight saved to be positioned for added forgiveness. The forged variable thickness titanium face has a channel around the perimeter to help increase ball speed.
But the “sexiest” thing about the King LTD is the “Space Port” 16-gram weight in the sole that both lowers the center of gravity so it’s on the neutral axis of the clubhead and being clear, lets you look inside. An Aldila Rogue Black 60 shaft is stock and the price is $449. TaylorMade M1/M2 When TMaG introduced the M1 last fall it immediately became the most played on the PGA Tour and then was joined by the M2 in January. The M1 has a unique T-track sole weight adjustability for ball flight, one sliding weight for draw/face bias and one for trajectory. Both the M1 and M2 have a distinctive black and white painted carbon fiber crown and the M2 in particular has gained a reputation of being very forgiving and is the driver used by Dustin Johnson, the 2015-16 PGA Tour Player of the Year. The loft sleeve on the hosel has 12 positions for +/- 2 degrees and TMaG offers a wide selection of stock shafts.

EQUIPMENT FAIRWAY WOODS
Callaway Great Big Bertha A forged cup face featuring the maximum allowable rebound is matched with a revamped Warbird Sole making for a very playable wood that golfers of any skill level will appreciate. The head is larger than the previous model which helps maintain ball speed when impacts are not in the exact sweet spot. There are even a Heavenwood of 20 ½ degrees and a Divine Nine of 24 degrees to fit in with club gapping. Callaway’s adjustable hosel is standard on all lofts other than the Heavenwood and Divine Nine. Each is priced at $250. Cobra KING F6 Baffler 4-5 The Baffler name is legendary for helping golfers hit good shots from difficult lies and this new fairway wood carrying the name will not disappoint. In addition to the Baffler sole rails there are front and back sole weights to adjust ball trajectory from
a lower more penetrating flight to higher trajectory while adding forgiveness for off center hits. The head is very compact and makes use of Cobra’s My Fly 8 adjustable loft hosel. $179. Yonex Ezone XPG One of the few stock counterbalanced clubs on the market (besides putters of course) this low profile fairway wood has 20 grams of tungsten powder at the end of the grip. This moves the balance point away from the clubhead and Yonex says the club may be swung faster than those of conventional weighting. The center of gravity is low and back in the head for better launch characteristics aided by the use of carbon graphite in the crown. Loft and lie are independently adjustable and the stock shaft is the Yonex EX310. Retail is $230 and there is a choice of three lofts.

POWERED BY GOLFGEARWEEKLY.COM HYBRIDS
Knuth High Heat Following up on the success of the driver, the High Heat hybrid has a Beta titanium face and because it weighs much less than steel several grams were saved. This weight was moved so the center of gravity is deeper and lower in the head which increases forgiveness plus improves launch and in general makes it easier to hit. Users also like the raised area on the sole that acts to reduce the friction when hitting the ground. Numerous stock shafts are available including the ultralight 43 gram Fujikura Pro HB Sakura and the price is $249. Ping G Crossover The Crossover isn’t an iron and it isn’t really a hybrid though it shares some features of each. The clubface doesn’t have bulge and roll like a wood but is flat like an iron while the head has the same hollow construction as a metal wood. This puts the center of gravity to the extreme rear of the head and with added internal toe weighting the CG
aligns exactly in the middle of the hitting area. As a consequence the control and spin are similar to an iron but the distance and playability is what we expect in a hybrid. It comes with a Ping Alta shaft stock with a choice of three lofts for $230. Tour Edge Golf Exotics EX9 Tour Edge has made wonderful hybrids for years and the Exotics EX9 makes use of the technology, materials and construction to keep the reputation unbroken. The cup face is combo brazed to the body, an expensive process pioneered for golf clubs by the company and used because it does away with the weight of a weld as in other clubs. The variable thickness face is forgiving across more of the hitting area and the Slip Stream sole design really helps keep the EX9 from digging in as well as getting the ball out of deep lies. Street price is $160 and there’s a choice of five lofts.

Callaway Apex CF 16 This is the first time Callaway has used their face cup construction in a forged iron and it results in a good looking clubhead with consistency across the face in the longer irons while the shorter irons (8iron through attack wedge) use a newly designed face plate. There is progressive offset and sole widths as well as location of the center of gravity to produce the proper trajectory as lofts increase through the set. Shorter irons have a more compact clubhead to help with feel and control. A set of 4-iron (21 1/2 degrees) through pitching wedge (45 degrees) is $1,050. Ping G Ping used their COR-Eye Technology to increase the amount of face flexing at impact of the Gs—four times as much as the 2015 model G30s. This produces higher ball speeds plus higher trajectory for more carry with a steeper angle of descent to better hold the green. The stainless steel
body undergoes a special heat treatment to be 40% stronger allowing for the thinner face. The AWT 2.9 stock shaft are heavier in the short irons to improve distance control and lighter in the long irons for more swing speed. A seven iron set of 4-iron (21 degrees) through pitching wedge (45 degrees) sells for $800. TaylorMade M2 High and far was TMaG’s mantra in creating the M2s and they succeeded very well…think of them as a supercharged update of the popular Burner model from 2009. Key features include a weight-saving fluted hosel, a 360 degree undercut creating a large unsupported face area. The sole is thinner but still has TMaG’s Speed Pocket slot so that the combination of all these design element produces both more distance plus a nice pro-like high trajectory. Eight iron set of 4-iron (19 degrees) through attack wedge (49 degrees) retails for $800.

Mizuno MP-25 Grain flow forged from 1025 boron alloy, the club heads are 30% stronger but retain the classic shape Mizuno is so well known for. This additional strength means the face can be thinner to give more ball speed for more distance. The incorporation of a “micro-slot” behind the face of the 3-iron through 6-iron produces a soft but solid feel and the 7-iron through pitching wedge have a redesign to help with versatility in shot making and workability. An eight iron set of 3-iron (21 degrees) through pitching wedge (46 degrees) are $1,200. TaylorMade PSi Borrowing the sole and face slots from last year’s RSi model the PSi is made for better players and has a vibration reducing multi-material badge behind the face. The sole and face slots allow the face additional flexing at impact for more yardage. Long irons have tung-
sten weighting while the forged short irons share the redesigned head profile. The face is less than 2mm thick to take advantage of the cut-through sole slot and face slots plus there’s an undercut around the entire perimeter. A set of 4-iron (21 1/2 degrees) through attack wedge (50 1/2 degrees) retails for $1,100. Titleist 716 AP2 The Tour-proven head shape has tungsten weighting in the heel and toe to put the center of gravity low in the co-forged constructed clubhead. Shafts in the long irons are lighter for higher launch and greater speed while the short iron shafts are heavier added control. Turf interaction has been improved—less dig—by slightly wider soles that have been relieved along the trailing edge. Eight irons from 4-iron (24 degrees) through gap wedge (50 degrees) are $1,200.

EQUIPMENT WEDGES
Callaway Mack Daddy 3 The latest iteration of the MD wedges offers three grinds—W with a wider sole for soft turf conditions, C for firmer conditions and S for in between. The milled 30V grooves in the lower lofts heads work best with a steep attack angle, the 20V grooves in the middle lofts are for sand and the wider 5V groove in the higher lofts are designed for shots out of rough or around the green. Available in from 46 degrees to 64 degrees the choice of three finishes is offered: matte black, chrome or gold nickel. Each is $130. Cleveland Smart Sole 2.0 The approach of the Smart Sole line is simple, to remove stress from the short game and Cleveland does it with an extra wide sole for cleaner contact regardless of the lie near the green. The 42-degree loft C
model is for chips without chunks and the 58-degree S to get out of the sand, the first try every time. The refined sole designs are matched with perimeter weighting and both come in an appealing black satin finish. This every-player wedge is priced $110. Mizuno S5 Aggressive quad-cut CNC milled grooves and grain flow forging makes the S5 a great wedge for any level of player while the distinctive blue ion finish, though white satin is also offered, makes it stand out from every other club in the bag. The head shape has been rounded with softer edges and the five sole grinds are matched to the lofts while the groove cross section varies with loft. A total of 25 loft and bounce possibilities are in the lineup including narrow to wide soles. Price is $130.

Ping Anser TR1966 Whether or not you are in to nostalgia take a look at TR 1966 made from 3D scans of the original Anser putter handcrafted by Karsten Solheim 50 years ago. There’s even a sound slot in the sole just as the original and no alignment line but departing from the original the finish, the Anser is done in a modern manganese bronze. Also improving on the heel/toe weighting design of the original, which has been copied by virtually every other putter company, is the addition of the True Roll milled face for consistent speed. Retail price is $150. Odyssey White Hot RX 2-Ball V-line The most popular putter face insert for more than 15 years has a new dual inject-molded layer with a softer inside growing firmer towards the edges adding to the performance of the easily recog-
nizable two-ball mallet design. Odyssey also put the distinctive Versa contrasting alignment aid on the top with a double bend one-shaft offset the mallet-style design. The head weight is a mid-range 355 grams. Priced at $160. Cleveland TFI 2135 Elevado The combination of a milled copperinfused face cap over a copolymer insert and a new alignment design give this putter two features not found on other putters. Cleveland’s 2135 alignment technology is new and very worthwhile. The alignment line is raised 21.35mm to match the radius of a golf ball so no matter if the user’s eyes are inside the ball, outside or directly over the ball the line of the putt can still be accurately seen. Besides the Elevado head the TFI 2135 also comes in two other shapes all priced starting at $160.

AROUND THE GAME Team Massachusetts Claims Record 13th Straight Tri-State Matches Win; Delivers Come-From-Behind Win at Rhode Island Country Club Barrington, RI — Entering the final day of the 83rd Tri-State Matches, held this year at Rhode Island Country Club, Team Massachusetts knew it would need a full 12-member effort to continue their recent success in the annual tournament. Trailing by double-digit points after the first day of play, the Bay State squad came out firing on day two to capture a record 13th straight Tri-State Matches title over the likes of foes Connecticut and Rhode Island. The victory marked the 34th championship overall for Team Massachusetts dating back to the tournament’s inaugural year in 1928.
Dick King Prevails in a Sudden-Death Playoff to Capture 3rd Massachusetts Super Senior Amateur Championship at Cummaquid GC Yarmouth Port, MA — The old saying, “save the best for last” might be a little cliché, but it is simply the only way to describe the final round of the 3rd Massachusetts Super Senior Amateur Championship, at Cummaquid Golf Club. Dick King (Hyannis GC) defeated David Pomarico (Poquoy Brook GC) on the first sudden-death playoff hole to capture the Super Senior Amateur Trophy at what was the 12th and final MGA Championship of the 2016 season. “It’s my first MGA tournament that I have ever won, so that was huge,” said King, who defeated his longtime friend Pomarico, who he says “always beats him.” The two grew up playing together at South Shore Country Club and have found themselves in familiar territory before, fighting for the Championship trophy.
