If you’re looking to add a little functional architectural flair to your home, an awning can be a spectacular option. But awnings vary great in quality and style, so you’ll need to do a little research. Here are a few things to consider.

Materials One of the first things to consider when purchasing an awning is what it is made from. The shade will be exposed to harsh sunlight, hot summers, frigid winters and rain storms. Making the correct decisions at the beginning can save you time and money down the road. Awnings made of quality materials and durable frames will last for several years while a cheaper awning may only last for only a year or two. The best awnings boast water-repellant characteristics thanks to the use of woven acrylic or laminated fabric. Colors and designs vary ac-

cording to each company; however, the awning should come with a firm warranty. Consider asking companies for a fabric and color sample. The product should also have a sturdy, rust-proof frame. It will need to be solid enough to withstand gusts of wind and light enough not to look bulky. Of course, the entire product should complement your home or building’s architecture. Awnings come in a variety of styles. If a company doesn’t have the style you need, look elsewhere. Also, if you can see examples of awning materials that have been in place for several years, that’s the best way to judge their ability to withstand Mother Nature. See for yourself how much it has faded or frayed.

Retractable Awnings The retractable awning has become a popular option in recent years because of versatility. You can extend them at your convenience to block the sun on a sweltering day. But in winter, you can also retract the awning so it isn’t damaged by heavy snow.

Because you can stow them away from the elements when not in use, these awnings can also last longer than fixed versions. Rolling them away when not in use means they stay out of the sun and aren’t whipped around as much by the wind. Retractable awnings require special care and attention. You must wash them regularly and allow them to dry before retracting.

Service, Experience Finally, you need to make sure you are working with a reputable, experienced installer. Your neighborhood handy person or family member might be able to install your awning, but there is a possibility you will not like the results. It is much better to find someone who has installed awnings for a living - preferably with a good track record. Don’t be afraid to ask for references from previous customers. Poor installation can ruin the exterior look of your building. Awnings are a specialized product. They require specific knowledge for the best result. The best awning companies

Choose an Awning Company

will offer in-depth knowledge about their products. They can also inform you how to best care for your awning. Reputable awning companies provide excellent service before, during and long after the installation, helping you make the most of your investment.

Why awnings? Increase usable yard space: Awnings can create privacy and establish boundaries for outdoor living areas. Place an awning over a deck, tables and chairs, or an entire patio area. Some people like to install awnings over a portion of their pools to provide shade for those who want to escape the sun’s rays. Motorized awnings can be retracted with the push of a button, which can help homeowners with physical limitations. Protect against sun damage: Awnings provide excellent protection against sun damage, as they can shield outdoor furniture from direct sunlight, helping to reduce the chances for discoloration or fading.

The Berkshire Eagle | BerkshireEagle.com

Reduce air conditioning costs: In addition to shading outdoor living areas, smaller awnings can be placed over southern- and westernfacing windows, shielding interiors against the sun’s rays. In turn, this may reduce reliance on air conditioners.

4

Expand gardening possibilities: Some plants require very specific light conditions to grow. Awnings can protect shade-loving plants from harsh sunlight and filter the sun for plants that require indirect light. They can be placed over a patio container garden or permanent garden structure.

Add value for buyers: For those who may be selling their homes soon, awning may help them receive top dollar. Today’s buyers want houses that have attractive and functional exteriors, and an awning can provide that competitive advantage over similar homes in the neighborhood.

Choose an Auto Body Shop

Sponsored by: Almeida Auto Body Making repairs to the body of your car, however small, requires the expertise of professionals at a reputable body shop.

The Berkshire Eagle | BerkshireEagle.com

If you find an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable, it will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are an unfortunate, but necessary, part of life for most people. Have a list of companies, research

6

each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. A good source for finding an auto body shop is your local newspaper. Local businesses advertise and many times you can find special deals to help save you money. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone and ask pertinent questions. How long have they been in business? What are their specialties? How soon can you bring your vehicle in for an inspection? Ask to set up an appointment for a free inspection. Then further investi-

gate the business. Look around their lobby. Is it clean? Do they have their license and any awards or certificates posted? Do they care enough about their customers to offer reading material, coffee or water? Consider their prices. Are they comparable to other body shops? While you want to find that deal, remember, cheaper is not always better. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint that is incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint

drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Oftentimes, there are hidden damages that cannot be detected until repair work begins on the vehicle. Finding an auto body shop may not be the most pleasant business because it usually means your vehicle has suffered some kind of damage. But finding the right shop will make the experience much more pleasant and you will be happy with the repairs. Especially if you find the right shop that knows how to repair your vehicle so it looks the same as before, or even better.

Protect vehicle paint finish The environment can be a vehicle’s worst enemy. Protecting a car means being mindful of substances and habits that can compromise the exterior finish.

shade whenever possible. This can help protect the paint, headlights and trim. Drivers should store their cars in their garages overnight and during daylight hours when they are home.

Seek shade: Over time, the sun can damage a vehicle’s paint job through oxidation and premature fading. People who live in areas with especially warm climates may see the paint on their vehicles suffer considerable damage thanks to the sun.

Wash and dry: It’s important to routinely wash vehicles to protect their exterior finish. Use a mild cleanser designed for automobiles and a clean rag or sponge so as not to cause scratches that can cause further damage. Because minerals in tap water can be left behind through evaporation and may oxidize and damage the paint, it’s best to wipe away as much residual moisture as possible with a chamois.

One of the easiest ways to protect a vehicle from the sun is to use sheltered parking or park in the

Paint protection: Waxing can prevent bird droppings, berries, splattered bugs, and more from sticking to the paint and wearing down the finish. Waxes come in paste, liquid and spray. Each type has a different reapplication schedule, so drivers should consult the product instructions. Vehicle owners also can invest in spray films to further protect painted surfaces. Do-it-yourself products are applied like a spray and then dry to an invisible, durable film. This helps protect against insects, gravel, sand, winter salt, and even road grime. Different manufacturers offer protection films.

Being a caregiver, no matter what your situation, comes with certain stresses and responsibilities. Caregivers are often responsible for making decisions about planning for the future of loved ones and how best to care for them. Choosing the right kind of care is one of the most difficult decisions you can make, so look for trusted resources that can walk you through the process and explain all the options that are available to you. And if you’re a caregiver, you should never forget to take care of yourself, too. If you devote some time to focus

on your own needs, keeping yourself in good mental and physical shape, you’ll be better able to provide excellent care for the people around you.

Hopeful, positive attitude While caring for people with autism or disabilities is undeniably difficult, many people also can experience tremendous joy by serving others and watching them grow and improve. That’s where a positive attitude comes in. No matter the nature of your loved one’s disability, every person should have the support that helps them lead a life full of hopes and dreams, successes and accomplishments. Children and adults with disabilities can still make tremendous contributions to society, but they need to be surrounded by the right community and find access to the right services and technologies that can make their lives as rich and full as possible. A disability doesn’t mean there’s no hope. Finding the right kind of support and care group, as well as keeping and projecting a hopeful and positive attitude, will go a long way in improving you and your loved one’s lives while instilling confidence and security.

Defining dizziness and finding relief

Sunday, April 7, 2019 |

Dizziness from inner ear problems can be treated without medication or surgery. But it’s important to describe symptoms as accurately as possible. “Just like there are different types of pain, there are different kinds of dizziness,” explains Dr. Reed. “Be as specific as possible so that your doctor or physical therapist can provide the most appropriate treatment.” Here are the five main distinctions of inner ear-related dizziness. 1. Vertigo is a sensation of spinning or turning. The most common vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, BPPV, where tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear move around causing the sensation of vertigo. 2. Lightheadedness or wooziness is feeling faint, such as what might happen when you stand up quickly. It can often result from an inner ear disorder in a gravity sensor called the otolith or be associated with your blood pressure.

Identify and Treat Causes of Dizziness

10

At some point in life most people will experience dizziness. It can be a very scary and disorienting experience, especially for seniors. There are many causes for dizziness but it’s often due to a problem with the vestibular system, which is located in the inner ear. The vestibular system is responsible for maintaining balance and preventing falls. “Over 80 percent of patients have a vestibular dysfunction which is causing the symptoms,” says Dr. Virginia Reed, PT, DPT, physical therapist and clinical director at FYZICAL™ Therapy and Balance Center in Fort Meyers, Fla. “Left untreated, dizziness will likely get worse.” Fortunately, there are some simple solutions to this common problem that don’t involve taking pills. According to a study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 35 percent of U.S. adults ages 40 years and older had an unrecognized vestibular dysfunction. The condition increases significantly with age. And it isn’t just a matter of feeling un-

3. Motion sickness is a form of dizziness that makes you feel nauseous. It can occur from any kind of movement such as on a boat or sitting in the back seat of a car. It can also result from a concussion or ear infection. 4. Disequilibrium is an unsteady feeling when standing and walking. It’s like getting off a DisneyLand ride and being unable to walk straight. People using canes and walkers often have this form of imbalance. 5. Behavioral dizziness results from feeling anxious or panicked about being dizzy. It’s a psychological reaction to an existing issue that causes dizziness symptoms to get worse. This, too, can be treated with physical therapy.

technology for proper assessment. The harness and rail system called the Safety Overhead Support (SOS) helps people safely regain their balance and resolve their dizziness symptoms. The balance system is similar to muscles—you can lose it if you don’t use it. Training the balance system takes time, patience and practice. The first few weeks are always challenging but within a month, most patients feel better and experience dramatic improvement. The number of sessions needed varies by person and disorder severity but most people see significant improvement in less than two months. Depending on the cause, other physical therapy approaches to dizziness include: 6. Balance Retraining (standing/walking): For patients whose dizziness is due to disequilibrium, practical solutions to common problems are off fered. For example, how to negotiate walking on uneven surfaces such as thick carpeting or lawns. Movement coordination and improved participation in everyday activities are high priorities. 7. Repositioning/Canalith maneuvers: This therapy is specifically for patients with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Using special hands-on techniques, a physical therapist moves the patient’s head and neck to reposition the calcium crystal debris floating in the inner ear to reduce/eliminate vertigo. 8. Strengthening/Endurance Therapy: Patients with disequilibrium or chronic dizziness are off ten weak and frail from the disorder. Traditional physical therapy using progressive resistance exercise and endurance exercises help patients reduce fall risk and improve overall health and wellness. 9. Self-directed home programs: Following a onehour training session, the patient is provided with a set of at-home exercises. Performed for a few minutes several times a day, most patients report relief within just a few months. While an inner ear dysfunction is the most common cause of dizziness, it can also result from medications, circulatory and neurological conditions. The first step in treating your dizziness is discovering the root cause of it. FYZICAL™ therapists are specially trained and certified in assessing and treating your dizziness disorder. You don’t have to live with dizziness and you may not need medications for it. With physical therapy, you can right your world again and return to doing the activities you love. In fact, after rehab, staying physically active is the best thing you can do to reduce recurrence of the condition.

While medications are often prescribed for dizziness, it is possible to reduce or eliminate it through physical therapy. For example, balance and vestibular physical therapy help strengthen the weakened vestibular system and use the other senses such as vision and touch to compensate for the loss Sponsored by: GREYLOCK of balance. How-To Guide

Thinking about getting a swimming pool? You won’t regret it—a swimming pool will give you years of summer fun. But remember, swimming pools require a fair amount of maintenance to keep them clean, safe and functioning properly.

Sunday, April 7, 2019 |

You will need an array of pool supplies, including chemicals, pumps, filters, cleaning systems and a slew of accessories. Here are some tips for choosing supplies.

Choose Swimming Pool Supplies

Health and safety Getting the right pool supplies is essential to maintaining safe pool conditions. There are plenty of chemical products on the market to help you, such as traditional chlorine. But there are also other products that are less harsh and more comfortable for you to use. A clean, safe pool involves using the correct combination of products. Pool chemicals generally fall into six categories: • Sanitizers, which are designed to kill all types of microscopic creatures, including bacteria and fungi. • Algaecides, which are designed to kill the algae plants that will naturally grow in your pool over time if left untreated. • Oxidizers, which help break down unwanted materials in the water. • pH controllers, which let you adjust how alkaline or acidic your pool water will be. • Balancers, which help control calcium scale and buildup from around the pool and your pool equipment. • Stabilizers, which help keep your beneficial pool chemicals from breaking down too quickly in sunlight, so they can continue doing their job cleaning the water.

Longevity

12

Swimming pools are a huge investment. Keeping their mechanical components running smoothly will save you money in the long run. When shopping for supplies, it is a good idea to search for products that will extend the life of your pool. Use products that your pool equipment manufacturers and local retailers recommend. These professionals will often suggest that filters should be changed at certain times. They will tell you the exact maintenance steps required to open or close your pool. Follow what they say. Supplies that maintain your pool are some of the best investments you can make. Their recommendations will benefit you and your wallet over the long term.

Expertise Find a local expert who has been in business for a long time to help you. That person will give you solid advice about shopping for pool supplies. The best retailers will recommend products that make pool maintenance much easier. Taking care of your pool is hard work, but with the right advice it will be more of a joy and less of a chore.

Fun Make the most of your summer season by purchasing the right pool accessories. Slides, rafts, toys, goggles and other products will enhance your fun. It is smart to spend some money on little things that will bring happiness while using your pool.

Choose a Tire Shop

14

Even the best luxury automobile will ride poorly if its tires aren’t properly maintained. That means choosing a set of quality tires is only the first step. You’ll need to regularly balance and rotate your tires in addition to periodically having them inspected for dangerous wear and tear. For that, you’ll need to build a relationship with a good tire shop. Here are a few things to consider next time you put tires on your car.

Choose Your Budget Cost should play a role in your decision-making process. Figure out what you can afford to pay for tires. It will

stop you from wasting time at expensive shops. Hopefully, you will only need to buy tires once a year; depending on how much you drive your car.

Choose Type of Tires When selecting tires, consider the climate you live in. If it is dry and warm, then a standard tire will be fine. But if you live in a place that gets a lot of snow, then you will want a better grade of tires. Snow tires are good for snow or dry land. High performances tires are good for driving at high speeds. If you commute a long distance, be sure to choose high-mileage tires.

Choose an Outlet There are a variety of ways you can purchase tires. They are available through national chains or a local auto shop. You may even buy them online. Buying tires in person allows you to inspect the tires. You can see exactly what you are getting. When you

purchase tires online it is difficult to judge what you are getting. National chain stores usually guarantee the product. They might be more costly, but buying them a big store may give you peace of mind. Local shops will likely be more inexpensive, and you might get more personalized service. Ultimately, your choice should fit your priorities and budget.

treads. A factory buffs the old tread and attaches a new one. Inspections ensure the casing is strong enough to hold a new tread. If you are on a budget, pulloffs and retreads are great choices. Anyone who purchases used tires should inspect each tire thoroughly. Bubbles, holes, cuts and metal showing are a sign that you should not purchase the product. It may not be safe.

New or Used

Check out the Shops

Some people don’t mind purchasing used tires. Pulloffs are tires that came with a new car, but the new car buyer wanted custom tires. As a result, pulloffs are almost new. Does your tire shop guarantee pulloff tires? If a dealer sells new and pulloff tires, the tire installer may not realize that each tire must replicate the way it was installed on the previous car. Failure to do so will result in the steel belt breaking through. When tires have had the worn treads replaced, they are called re-

When you visit a shop, look at their products and meet their employees. You should feel as though the salespeople are trustworthy and knowledgeable. Once you find a good tire shop, you will likely return again for other products. It is important that you develop a good working relationship.

If you have unexplained aches and pains, you may want to consult a chiropractor.

Choose a Chiropractor

These well trained medical professionals can help alleviate pain in your back, head or neck. Chiropractors believe that realigning your spine and normalizing the nervous system, will help relieve pain and discomfort in the body. And it works for a lot of people. Many patients find immediate relief from pain before even leaving the chiropractor’s office. They report rapid improvements in their muscles, joints, bones and ligaments. Chiropractic care can also improve your overall health. The treatments administered by chiropractors can also treat minor ailments such as headaches and sinus pain. Thinking about the following factors can help you find the right chiropractor for your needs.

Quality Chiropractors have some of the most stringent educational requirements in the health care industry. According to the American Chiropractic Association, accredited chiropractors go through at least 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical training time combined. Students must spend four years in a pre-medical program, in addition to four or five years of professional training. Not only do chiropractors study the body, they usually also study the musculoskeletal system, pressure points, bone and joints, and nerves. Finding a chiropractor with these studies under their belt can give you a better experience and results. Prior to selecting a chiropractor, inquire about training and credentials. Make sure he or she is properly qualified, has a current licensee to practice, and has experience in the area you are looking for.

Insurance Coverage Many insurance carriers include chiropractic care as part of their regular coverage. Verify that your care will be covered. But if you don’t have insurance, many chiropractors offer affordable plans to help patients. Even without health insurance, you can still find chiropractor offering quality, cost-effective care.

How-To Guide Sunday, April 7, 2019 |

Choose Short-term Rehabilitation or a Nursing Home Facility

The Berkshire Eagle | BerkshireEagle.com

Family members deserve the best care, particularly as they grow older. A good skilled nursing facility can help parents and other elderly loved ones live a happy, healthy life.

18

Short-term care, in particular, can help patients regain strength, mobility and independence, and help them return to their favorite activities. When long-term care is needed, choosing a comfortable environment ensures that you have peace of mind knowing that they are receiving good attention and care. There are several factors to consider when picking a care center.

Five-Star Rating System and Independent Sources There are some easy ways for consumers and families to compare nursing homes. Medicare offers its five-star rating system that includes ratings of health inspections, staffing and quality measures. An overall score is also provided. The website is www. medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/ search.html. You can use other independent sources like the American Healthcare Association which offers quality recognition, and US News & World Report’s “Best Nursing Homes”

rankings at health.usnews.com/bestnursing-homes. And ask if the facility surveys its residents and families about satisfaction, and what independent vendor they use to compare their results to other facilities.

Annual Survey Results Nursing homes in Massachusetts undergo rigorous annual inspection by the state Department of Public Health. The results from those surveys are also available online at webapps.ehs.state.ma.us/nursehome/ and provide a simple way to compare facilities.

Visit the Facility • Take a tour of the potential facility. You should intuitively feel warmth and safety in this environment. Your visit will also provide clues about the general atmosphere and morale of the residents. There should be lots of natural light, cheerful colors, bright wall art and hints of laughter from the staff and patients. • Ask about medical leadership, care plan meetings you can take part in, and about meeting the administrator and nursing leadership. • A robust rehabilitation program is important. Ask how many days per week rehab therapies are offered, and which therapies; and ask how many minutes of therapy is offered per week.

• Focus on the cleanliness, staffing levels and the appearance of other residents. Is the air fresh and free from unpleasant odors? Are there enough nurses and attendants on duty? Are residents appropriately dressed? Do they seem clean and freshly bathed? • Bring the prospective resident along for the tour if possible. This facility may become home. Feeling welcomed are cues that this could be a positive living experience. • Socializing is important. Are there opportunities for residents to meet each other? Regular activities such as music and crafts or an outdoor area for enjoying the sunshine will enhance quality of life. Ask to see an activities calendar. • Most nursing home facilities are happy to provide a tour of the building. Once you see the environment, ask for a consultation with a staff member. This is an opportunity to ask questions and address special needs of the prospective resident. • Possible questions might include accommodation of patients’ doctors’ appointments outside the facility and access to barbers and beauticians for residents.

Talk with Others You might have a chance to talk with a relative of a patient who is currently living in the nursing home.

Sponsored by: Mt. Greylock Extended Care Don’t be afraid of asking them for honest opinions about the facility. Ask about the staff and quality of care received by the residents. Solicit their input on whether your own loved one would be happy in the facility. These relatives are usually eager to share their experiences with you. Hearing their impressions will help ease your own anxieties about this important decision.

Ask the Doctor If you are still unsure, discuss the matter with your loved one’s primary care physician. This professional should also be able to recommend good nursing facilities in your area. When helping a family member or loved one choose a nursing facility for rehabilitation or long-term care, carefully weigh the expectations of your family member with your impressions and the recommendations of others. Taking the time and doing the research will result in a better quality of life for your loved one and peace of mind for yourself.

Choose the Right Window Company

you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.” - John Ruskin How many times have we picked up a ‘bargain’ at a store, online, or from a third party only to get it home and find out that the ‘bargain’ we just bought was a complete waste of money. Now imagine that ‘bargain’ was the windows in your home. Oftentimes, window companies will lure you in with promises of incredibly low prices that seem too good to be true, and they often are. Keep in mind that the national company advertising $300 windows charges an average of twice that amount in the home. Your best bet is to find a window company with fair pricing, not just low prices. Good replacement windows should be a once in a lifetime investment, not an every 5-7 years purchase. Before you agree to an in-home consultation, check the warranty on the windows online. Chances are pretty good that the better windows will have a lifetime warranty and won’t pro-rate their coverage.

Install is King! “Anybody can do bad work, but not everybody does good work.” - Paul Simon

The Berkshire Eagle | BerkshireEagle.com

Sponsored by: Thermo Expert Homeowners choose to replace their home’s windows for a variety of reasons:

• Lower energy bills • Increase comfort and reduce drafts • Remove windows that are broken, inoperable, or just plain stuck • Beautify your home and improve its appearance • Reduce the amount of 20 maintenance required

No matter what your reason, before you run out to that Big Box home store or pick up the phone to the Giant Window Company that advertises non-stop on your television – here are three crucial points to help guide your search for the right window company.

The price is right – or is it? “There are two mistakes one can make when purchasing an item, one is to pay too much, but the other is to pay too little. It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money that’s all. When you pay too little,

Nowhere is this adage as true as in the window installation business. Imagine spending countless hours on research, reaching an educated decision on the right windows for your home and signing a contract for what seems like a fair price. Then when the day finally comes to install your windows the crew that shows up is poorly trained, sloppy, or just plain lazy. Important details are missed, corners are cut, and the windows look nowhere as nice as they did in the brochure. Poor installation techniques very quickly negate the advantages of quality windows, and many times will completely invalidate the warranty. How can you keep this from happening to you? There are a few simple questions to ask that will help you separate the quality craftsmen from Moe, Larry, and Curly. • How long has your company been in the window business, and how many windows have you installed? You don’t want a company using your home for on the job training. • Are the installers employees of the company, or do you use sub-contractors? Farming out the work to the sub-contractor de jour almost guarantees less than desired results. • What training and certification

do your installers have? Factory trained installers with industry certification are usually your best bet.

Reputation is usually earned – for better or worse! “You can’t buy a good reputation; it must be earned.” - Harvey Mackay You’ve seen all the ads from companies claiming to be the world’s most trusted contractor, or touting their hundreds of satisfied customers. They seem convincing enough – but you know people who have had a bad experience. Obviously all companies will cherry-pick the feedback from previous customers, choosing the ones that present them in the best light. What they won’t tell you is how many complaints they had to sift through to pull out the few compliments they received. Here are a few tips on how to find the truth about a company’s reputation. Check their listing on Angie’s list. Read the actual reviews to find ones most similar to the work you are looking for. Be sure to check their rating on windows specifically rather than the overall rating. Why choose a company that build up their overall rating with excellent roofing and siding reviews, but gets lackluster reports on their window work? Look at their BBB listing, not just their rating. Most reputable window companies will link their website directly to their BBB profile. There you can see the total number of complaints, even if the BBB considers them resolved. Remember that many companies may work extra hard to resolve a BBB complaint, but do little to fix the underlying problem that caused it. Next, a trip to the local small claims court may tip you off to a contractor’s true reputation. Ask the clerk about them – sometimes an eye roll from them will tell you more than Angie’s List or the BBB ever could. After all, who wants to have to sue their window contractor to get an issue resolved? Finally, check with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office Contactor Guarantee Fund. In some cases, the AG will reimburse homeowners up to $10,000 for unsatisfactory work done by a contractor. Obviously you’ll want to avoid any window companies that have had claims against them. Follow these three tips and you’re sure to find a fair, honest, and accommodating window contractor for your next project.

How-To Guide

People need extra help as they age. It’s just a fact of life. Fortunately, there are an increasing number of options that don’t involve a nursing home.

Sunday, April 7, 2019 |

Services that provide in-home care for the elderly are a popular option. Not only do they allow people to continue living in their own space, where they’re comfortable, they’re often a considerably cheaper choice than

full-time nursing facilities. Here are some tips to keep in mind when shopping for a home service provider.

Medical or Not? It’s important to know is what level of medical care, if any, will be provided. Senior service providers vary widely in the types of help they offer people. Some are staffed by nurses or other licensed health-care providers,

which is important if you’re looking for any actual medical care as part of your needs. But for many seniors who don’t necessarily need medical services in their home, there are other providers that focus on helping with day-to-day needs like cleaning, cooking and personal grooming. They’re more like personal assistants to help seniors live a great life, not necessarily offering any nursing care. Make sure you know the difference and ask exactly what kinds of ser-

vices will be provided. For medical needs, always talk to your doctor to get advice about what would be best for your situation.

The People Different companies handle staffing in different ways. Most likely, you’ll be assigned a regular person who you can get to know and be comfortable interacting with. Inviting someone into your home is a big responsibility, so it’s important you find someone you can trust and enjoy spending time with. What happens when your regular staffer can’t visit, though? Vacations, illness and other conflicts mean sometimes you’ll need to have a different person do the job, so ask your provider how they handle substitutes when needed.

Track Record Find out how long the home care service has been in business. Usually when a company has been around for a long time, that’s a good sign. With a competitive market for in-home care services in most areas, only the best ones will stay in business for a long period of time. You should also find out as much as you can about the firm’s workers. Ask about how much supervision they get, what their qualifications are and how long they’ve worked for the service.

The Berkshire Eagle | BerkshireEagle.com

Making a Plan

22

Because every person’s needs are different, find out what kinds of plans will be a good fit for your needs. From the frequency of visits to the types of services offered, you need to find a good match for your exact situation. If the in-home service will be helping with any medical needs, your doctor ought to be involved with making the plan. Most home care services will be able to coordinate with your doctor or hospital personnel to come up with a plan of care.

Reputation

Choose a Home Care Service for the Elderly

Finally, ask around to learn whatever you can about the service’s reputation. Your doctor, friends and family may be able to tell you their experiences with certain service providers in your area — good or bad — so try to find first-person experiences to make a good choice. The best home health providers will have a long track record and lots of happy customers, so a good reputation in your community is a sign that you’re making the right pick.

Build a Deck

Sunday, April 7, 2019 |

How-To Guide

more work to dig deep footings, it’s worth it to have a deck that lasts longer and is safer for carrying weight. Other sites may only require precast concrete blocks with minimal surface prep. Local building codes — along with smart local practices that you can learn by asking the pros — will determine the type of footings and piers needed for your project.

Joists Pressure-treated beams will form a frame for your decking, and it’s important that they’re all straight and cut precisely in length. The more precision you achieve at this stage, the better the finished project will look.

Decking Before you attach your decking to the joists, it’s a good idea to waterproof the bottom side. You won’t be able to fully coat the bottom surface any other time, so take advantage of the opportunity if you want your deck to last. Lay the decking planks with the waterproofed side down, then attach them to the joists with screws or nails designed for outdoor use. Small spacers can help to keep the gaps consistent. Once the planks are all in place, install end caps — typically 1x6 wood — to give it a finished appearance.

24

There are few additions to the outward appeal and comfort of your home than the addition of a deck. Done right, a quality designed and constructed deck can become a focal place for family activities and solitary interludes — from barbecues to morning coffee, cocktail parties to a space for quiet contemplation. If your home doesn’t already have one, building a deck can be a simple, do-it-yourself project (if you’re handy with basic construction) or a fullblown project that requires plans and professional installation. Before you begin, decide on what your needs and desires are then investigate your options. Here’s what’s involved.

Safety and regulations Before you start any project, it’s important that you know how to do it safely and follow any applicable rules for construction projects in your area. Make sure you know and follow the safety instructions for the tools you’ll be using, including using protective equipment like safety glasses and gloves when needed. You should also check with your city or county’s building department to make sure you’ve got the right permits and know the requirements for your deck. Many municipalities regulate the footing depth, materials and location of your deck, including setback distances from utilities or property lines.

Planning Once you know the applicable rules and have an idea about the deck you want to install, you can start making more concrete plans for turning that

dream into reality. Start with basic measurements and a materials list. Every deck will need joists, decking and some type of footing to keep it anchored over the ground. You may also need rails, steps, low-voltage lighting or other accessories depending on your vision for the project. A good home improvement store can make your plans much easier. They’ll have an experienced staff happy to help you make the right choices and estimate your total costs for the project.

The foundation Every great deck starts with a strong foundation, but the exact requirements for it can vary greatly depending on your soil, climate and local regulations. Some cities require deep footings to be dug to help it withstand the soil movement that results from freezing temperatures in the winter. While it’s

Finally, to get the longest life out of your new deck, you should stain and seal the deck surface. The process of staining is fairly easy and can add beauty and value to your home with a carefully chosen, tasteful color. The hard part is often the prep work, including sanding and cleaning the wood before you apply it, something that can make a big difference in applying a consistent color and getting a lasting, weatherproof surface. Carefully follow the instructions for the stain and seal products you selected, including all the preparation steps.

Decorating Once your deck is in place, the fun part begins: getting it ready for family get-togethers and parties with your friends. A new deck is the perfect chance to get a new grille, outdoor furniture set, lighting and other accessories that help you make the most of your investment. With a little work, you can turn your backyard into a fun oasis that adds value and enjoyment for years to come.

How-To Guide Sunday, April 7, 2019 |

Getting older presents many challenges to all of us, particularly the elderly. Health care often becomes a primary focus for seniors and their families, sometimes to the degree that families and friends can not provide. In those cases, an assisted living community can majorly improve quality of life.

Choose an Assisted Living Community

It is at this juncture that many begin to consider assisted living care communities. Because many also double as full-time medical facilities or employ full-time nurses and other care providers, these communities offer a peace of mind to families and friends. In the past, long-term care could only be handled by a nursing home. Living in a hospital setting for an extended time was not a pleasant environment. In addition to on-site medical care, many assisted living communities can appear more like upscale apartments, offering dining, travel, activities and personal freedoms. But not all assisted living communities are alike. The decision to place a relative into such an environment warrants close scrutiny and research.

Gardens and landscaping

26

The landscaping of an assisted living community can give you a good indication about the quality of the community. A well-maintained lawn and garden is a positive sign. If the prospective resident enjoys spending time in nature, look for a community that has park-like areas. Some communities have communitystyle gardens and walkways for residents. Just being able to experience nature as it grows and changes with the seasons can be uplifting and soothing. An assisted living community with a manicured lawn and garden can make a huge difference in the quality of life for a loved one.

Amenities Accommodations at these communities can range from luxurious, detached cottages to cozy condominiums. It all depends on what you are looking for, what you can afford, and what is available. As you visit the facilities, try to personalize each space. Imagine how your loved one’s belongings might fit into the area and where decorations

will be placed. Does the atmosphere bring about a feeling of peace and tranquility? How are the rooms decorated? Are they tasteful and soothing, or do they remind you of a hospital setting? Look at the home amenities and consider how you would feel about living there. Would you want your loved one living there? Is the community within your budget?

units is an important part of improving quality of life. Make sure the community offers activities and space to occupy your loved one’s time. Quality facilities will have activities that match his or her hobbies. If your family member enjoys crafts, then look for a community with a designated craft area or classes for your loved one to enjoy.

Personal care Recreation and activities Game and meeting areas can help the resident make new friends and keep them from feeling alone and lonely. Leaving the confines of their

Ask your loved one’s personal physician how much care is required to function safely. The doctor may even be able to guide you toward an appropriate community. Be sure to seek

advice on what qualifications and certifications you need to look for in the community’s staff. The community’s employees should be well-qualified to handle medical needs. If you monitor medical care, you can avoid paying for extensive services that your loved one may not need. Understanding the care the person requires will help you find a community that is a good fit. Choosing an assisted living community is about finding the right combination of medical services and amenities. With research and thought, you will find the perfect place to bring comfort and care to your loved one.

low-level noise to cancel out tinnitus.

Sunday, April 7, 2019 |

• Retraining: Retraining therapies like Levo Sleep Therapy are designed to train the ear to ignore tinnitus sounds, retraining involves a wearable device programmed to play tones that mask the patient’s specific tinnitus frequencies. Eventually, the exposure conditions the patient to no longer notice that particular sound. • Medication: In extreme cases, when the tinnitus is severe enough to impact the patient’s ability to lead a normal life, medication may be used to help reduce symptoms. Some antidepressants have been shown to lessen tinnitus suffering, but due to the long list of side effects they are treated as a last resort. • At-home treatment: Mild tinnitus can often be dealt with by taking simple steps to alleviate the underlying cause. Avoiding irritants like loud noises, caffeine and alcohol can keep tinnitus in check, as can managing stress and using lowlevel background noise to mask annoying phantom sounds.

Manage and Prevent Tinnitus

28

Affecting between 15 and 20 percent of all adults, tinnitus is a common ailment with a variety of causes. Depending on the source and severity of the condition, it is often possible to mitigate or even eliminate symptoms and prevent tinnitus from interfering with daily life. Tinnitus is broadly defined as the sensation of hearing “phantom” sounds not caused by an external stimulus. Sufferers may experience a range of sounds, from the oft-described “ringing in the ears” to buzzing, clicks, hums, hisses or even a

dull roar. The sound may be constant or intermittent. In severe cases, the noise can be loud enough to interfere with concentration and hearing. All tinnitus is caused by an underlying condition. Common culprits are ear injury, circulatory problems wax buildup or foreign bodies in the ear, and age-related hearing loss. Rushing, pulsing or humming noises are often a sign of vascular problems like high blood pressure. High-pitched ringing, on the other hand, is more likely the result of some kind of trauma, like exposure to a very loud noise or a physical blow to the ear. In some cases, treating the root cause will clear up tinnitus symptoms. When the root cause can’t be identified (or treatment doesn’t solve the issue), there are a variety of solutions

available that can mask or reduce troublesome phantom sounds. These include: • White noise machines: Ranging from specially-designed speaker pillows to a simple desk fan, a white noise machine is any device that produces a constant, subtle background noise, be it a recording or natural sounds like rain or waves, or the mechanical hum of an air conditioner. These external sounds help to cover up annoying noise caused by tinnitus, but are quiet and gentle enough to go virtually unnoticed. • Masking devices: Essentially a wearable white noise machine, these hearing-aid like devices are worn in-ear and provide constant

Of course, the best treatment is prevention. While some tinnitus cases aren’t preventable, you can still take steps to lower your risk of developing or worsening the condition. Use ear protection whenever you’re around loud noises like power tools, heavy machinery and firearms. Resist the temptation to blast your favorite music (especially through headphones) and keep the volume to a reasonable level. Finally, make sure you’re eating right and exercising regularly to keep your vascular system healthy, for the sake of your ears and the rest of your body.

Choose a Garden Center

30

Here’s what you should look for when selecting a new garden supply store.

Quality garden centers offer handson training and other classes on various gardening topics. Expertise can also be defined by media presence. The specialists at the garden center you are considering should be on the short list that the media uses. Your friends and neighbors may have referrals. Does someone in your social network love gardening? If so, then ask who they use. While some garden centers stock a wide variety of brands and products, most have a few products they specialize in.

Do the Research

Visit the Garden Centers

Research will help you determine which garden center is best for you. Look at the center’s catalog or website. Not only should it be filled with quality products, it should also have information to help you become more successful. Staff advice should be easy to understand and apply. Remember, they are not only retailers but also experts in their field.

Once you have researched garden centers, visit two or three locations before making a final decision. Talk to a sales person. Think of a problem you experienced in the past and ask them for a solution. The sales people should be knowledgeable about remedies. Note his or her demeanor and attitude. Find out how long they have been in

Gardeners used to rely on yearly seed catalogs to pick what they planned to put in their flowerbeds and vegetable gardens in the spring. Nowadays, gardeners can buy supplies year-round online or at conveniently located garden centers.

business and more about the owner. Good centers are usually in the same place, operated by the same people for a very long time. Take a look at the plants. Do they look healthy? Are they well-maintained? Is there a decent variety? Typically, plants grown in green houses are better quality. After all, they are produced to be grown in your area. Plants grown locally usually have fewer diseases. A plant may not appear diseased until you take it home. Inquire about how the plants are produced. “Open pollinated” designates a seed or plant will reproduce itself purely if a seed is properly saved from the fruit of the plant. An organic seed or plant has been produced without artificial or chemical pesticides. Genetically modified plants are created by laboratory technology that manipulates the plant’s genes. For example, instead of mixing two different kinds of corn to create one that is more resistant to diseases, they may combine genes from corn and a totally unrelated tomato plant. These

modifications do not happen naturally in the breeding process. Many people may be cautious about using genetically altered seeds and plants, but there are advantages to them. On commercial farms, this type of plant has plenty of assets over organic plants. In a backyard garden, however, genetically modified plants are usually not necessary. When shopping at a garden center, understand the types of plants they offer. There should be a labeling system in place. If not, ask the staff for more information. Commercial crops are more likely to have genetic modification. Once you’ve done your research and know what you want, head on over to your local garden center and get started improving your garden.

How-To Guide Sunday, April 7, 2019 |

Choose a Campground

Picking the right campground isn’t always easy, though. Here are some factors to weigh.

More often, though, camping is just as fun when you stay reasonably close to home. Look for a site that’s convenient for a weekend getaway, yet far enough away that it feels like a real vacation. Sometimes it can be very close to home geographically but a world away mentally. Nearby attractions can help you make the choice, too. National or state parks, tourist sites or cities you’d enjoy visiting can make certain campsites more appealing. Many travelers like to use campsites almost like hotel rooms, letting them travel, enjoy nature and stay frugal all at the same time.

LOCATION

AMENITIES

The first and most important choice is the campground’s location. If you’re going on a faraway trip, then you’ll obviously need a campground close to the destination. Online reviews and word-of-mouth descriptions from campers who have stayed there can help you make a decision.

Let’s face it. There’s one part of camping that people seemingly never agree on: just how much civilization should be involved in the experience. For some campers, only a primitive campsite that can be reached by remote hiking counts as true camping. For others, a luxury RV with full hookups and paved walking paths is as primitive as they want to get. The choice really comes down to personal preference. The camp site should match your expectations for what you want from the outdoor experience, whether that’s just the basics — maybe a water hookup and a pad

The Berkshire Eagle | BerkshireEagle.com

Enjoying the great outdoors is one of America’s best pastimes. With so much natural beauty surrounding us, just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed, camping can be the perfect way to unwind and spend time with family and friends.

for your tent — or a full-blown luxury “glamping” resort. Ask about electrical connections, RV hookups, showers, bathrooms and any other amenities you might want for your camping trip. The best campgrounds will offer a range of services at different price points to meet your needs.

LAYOUT AND RULES For many people, camping is all about peace, quiet and isolation. For others, it’s more about partying with friends. Whatever your style of camping, you should make sure the campground’s layout and rules are a good match for your kind of fun. If you’re the peace-and-quiet kind of camper, you’ll want a campground with widely spaced, very private camp sites and strictly enforced curfew rules. Most campgrounds have a designated hour when quiet time begins, but some are stricter than others about making sure campers comply with them. If you want to play music and get loud with friends and family, you should look for a camp site where that’s not going to be a problem. Later curfews and a more laid-back atmosphere would be a better fit. Talk to the campground’s man-

ager if you have any questions about what’s allowed and what’s not. Knowing and following the rules will not only help keep you safe, but also make you a better camping neighbor so everyone has a good experience.

RESERVATIONS Finally, you should look for a campground that accepts reservations well in advance, especially if you plan to camp on a holiday, a weekend or during a busy time of year. Every campground has their own procedures for how they handle reservations. The most popular sites can be reserved months or even years in advance for the heavy travel season, so plan far ahead if you want the best selection. Some campgrounds use an online reservation system where you can schedule and pay for your camp site on the computer. Others can be reserved by phone or by mail. And some don’t allow reservations at all, allocating their camp sites to whoever shows up first. By picking a campground with the right location, amenities and policies, then reserving it well in advance, you’ll be setting the stage for a memorable, fun experience enjoying Mother Nature.

Establish Legal Safeguards for Your Golden Years

The Berkshire Eagle | BerkshireEagle.com

As we age into our senior years, Americans face an array of issues that can more easily be navigated with the help of professional planners or legal assistance.

34

Among these concerns are wealth management, estate planning, nursing care and an assortment of probate issues. Because seniors are often more vulnerable to scam artists and other predators, competent legal counsel can head off these problems. As a senior citizen, it is important to have the right legal counsel to guide you through some complicated matters. It is too important to risk doing it on your own. Proper planning puts the power in the hands of seniors. It is a fantastic way to preserve wealth and get lasting benefits for your families.

Medicare Benefits Created in the mid-1960s, Medicare remains one of several federal programs that exist to benefit seniors. It ensures that Americans over the age

of 65 will have health coverage. People who are younger than 65 may also receive benefits under certain conditions. Hospitalization, prescription drugs, visits to the doctor and home nursing assistance expenses are covered by this program. If you want to learn more about Medicare benefits, consult an elder law attorney. Qualified lawyers with experience in this area can provide information about program eligibility. They can also tell seniors how to maximize their benefits.

Medicaid Benefits While many people confuse Medicaid and Medicare, the two programs are different. Medicaid offers medical coverage for low-income citizens regardless of age. It will help pay expenses of prescription drugs, home health care, doctor visits and more. Lawyers who specialize in Medicaid guide clients through the application process. These attorneys will instruct clients about getting the maximum level of assistance possible.

Disability Legal Assistance Lawyers who specialize in disabil-

ity issues inform clients about healthcare resources, financial assistance and even educational benefits. Consulting with these professionals ensures that anyone suffering from a disability has access to available resources to help them fulfill their potential.

Aid for Veterans Eligible veterans have many benefits available for their use. Seniors who may be entitled to receive these benefits should always consult with an attorney to make sure they receive everything they are due. Attorneys specializing in veterans’ affairs have a firm understanding of the different benefits and the procedures for claiming them. Spouses of veterans may also be eligible for certain benefits. An experienced lawyer can help them navigate the system.

Asset Management and Protection Wealth management strategy is one of the most critical aspects of estate planning. No senior should ignore it.

Having a deliberate, tactical strategy is a strategic way to safeguard wealth for future generations. Failing to draft a thorough estate plan can be expensive. It can be devastating to decedents who may not have the financial resources to work through legalities. Estate planning lawyers will craft documents that detail their client’s true intent regarding asset distribution. Wills and trusts are two common ways of smoothly transitioning assets from one family member to another. Attorneys can also craft strategies to minimize the estate tax liabilities that heirs may face. Skilled estate planning lawyers will offer creative solutions for protecting assets from the negative effects of the probate process. Getting proper and professional elder care and legal advice not only protects you and your loved ones, it also provides peace of mind.

If you enjoy pools or spas regularly, you know membership fees can add up and with frequent visits you might begin to ask this question: Why not add a professional spa or pool to your home? Why not? If you’re worried about the price, you probably shouldn’t be. Home spas have become quite affordable in recent years. As a result, they are also very popular.
