You’ve Got Questions? Lynn has answers.
You just can’t be TOO careful! by Lynn Arseneau
Dear Lynn, Driving by a home for sale by a real estate company I stopped and got out to get a better look. The house was empty so I peeked in the windows. A car pulled up and a man got out and cheerfully said, “Hi! In the market for a house?” I said yes. He introduced himself as a realtor that worked for the company on the sign. He said he didn’t have the key with him and that several offers were already submitted. I told him that I had been hoping for a home in that neighborhood. We talked some more and he told me that he liked me and would help me out. No offers had been accepted and he could put one in for me, all he needed was a deposit, NOW. Being a fairly intelligent person, I caught on to the scheme and said I had to talk to my husband first and I left. I don’t believe he worked for the company at all. Has this been something that’s been going on? Signed, Nancy “Wasn’t Born Yesterday”
Q
Hi Nancy, Well, now I’ve heard almost everything! I’m so glad you knew enough to leave. It’s shocking how many ways people think to scam others. Everyone needs to be very careful and do extra checking to be very sure who they’re dealing with and what is being presented is legitimate. You may feel a little awkward asking for more information but it will be worth it in the end.
A
I’ve been a Realtor for 36 years. People frequently ask for my advice and opinions, and by sharing those questions and answers with you, I hope to offer some helpful information.
Many times I read interesting things about buying and selling homes. I wanted to share some fun “stuff” that I’ve come across. I can’t take credit for any of it, but it’s fun reading. Enjoy!
Buying a home?
or hang it over your front door. This will protect your home from witches.
Selling a home?
Leave your broom behind. An old broom brings the dust and dirt of your old home and supposedly carries the negative aspects of your life. A new broom signifies a fresh start in your new home.
Bread and salt.
When you first enter a new home, bring bread and salt along with your new broom. After you cross the threshold, sprinkle salt in front of the door to keep evil spirits away.
Scatter coins in the living room
A southern legend
claims that painting your front porch blue will ward off ghosts. The ghosts, which can’t cross water, mistake the blue porch for water and stay away.
The ancient Norse believed
that placing an acorn on a windowsill would protect the house from being struck by lightning.
Exit through the same door you entered.
on the first day in your new home so prosperity will reign.
Many believe that it’s bad luck to move into a new house on a Friday or Saturday, or rainy day. Thursday is considered to be the luckiest day to move in.
Lynn Arseneau, CBR, GRI, ABR, CRS, is affiliated with Signature Associates in Pittsfield, MA For more info, visit LynnMovesYou.com or HomesInTheBerkshires.com
It’s bad luck. If you accidentally do so, immediately walk through the same door to reverse the bad luck.
Stuff fennel into the keyhole
Look for homes that have the number eight somewhere in the list price. In China, this is said to be good luck.
Pick the right day.
Never carry a hoe into the house.
The first time you enter your new house, you should exit through the same door as you entered, or else you’ll have bad luck. After you’ve entered and exited once, you can leave through any door.
