You’ve Got Questions? Lynn has answers.

Covid showings: How to

by Lynn Arseneau

I’ve been a Realtor for 34 years. People frequently ask for my advice and opinions, and by sharing those questions and answers with you, I hope to offer some helpful information.

Dear Lynn, We hope all is well with you and your family. Thanks for doing this column and answering our question. Jackie and I are considering selling our home to move closer to family. We’re wondering how this works during this time of serious health concerns. We certainly don’t want to have any infected people in our home but it’s obvious there’s really no way to monitor that. What is happening regarding this? Ed and Jackie (Missing family)

Q

Hi Ed and Jackie, You certainly can list and sell your home. What I’ve done, and seen others do as well, is to make every attempt to keep everyone safe while allowing your home to be shown. This includes taking several detailed pictures of the home inside and out, creating a detailed video tour of your home inside and out so the public can have a detailed view of the home. Realtors have been requiring potential buyers and their agents to wear masks and gloves, and removing shoes. Some sellers have been providing hand sanitizer and surface wipes as well. Any paperwork required for listing and selling can be generated using programs that allow you and the buyer to sign all documents electronically. Home inspections are done in a similar way. The inspector and anyone in the home wears a mask and gloves. The report is sent to the buyer electronically. It’s a challenging time and everyone you work with should be very careful to protect all parties involved.

Have a discussion with your Realtor and be sure the plan is very clear. Good luck and stay well. Dear Lynn, Hi there. I was planning on having a huge tag/yard sale before putting my house on the market. I have lots of great stuff that has been in this house for over 40 years. It’s not junk that can be thrown away. There’s lots of it, too! Because of the virus, I don’t believe a yard sale or estate sale is a good idea or even allowed. I can’t show the house with all the stuff because it’s too cluttered. I can’t imagine that there’s much I can do but I thought I’d ask anyway. No Junk Julia

Q

Hi Julia, Oh yes, I understand your dilemma! You’re on the right track by just thinking about clearing out the house. Good for you. It’s true that neat and clean shows better than cluttered. So, what to do in this situation? If you have a basement or a garage, you could neatly store those items in those spaces. Buying bins or using packing boxes is a great way to store items and easily hide clutter. Be sure to label each one! You can also rent a storage unit and temporality store items, with a plan to sell them in the future when you’re able. A friend or family member might have temporary storage space to offer. If you really want to do some work, you might look into posting your items for sale on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or, EBay. Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of selling items on your front yard or sidewalk!! I recently put a bedroom

set in the front yard with a for sale sign on it and it worked! You may consider trying that approach for some larger items. I hope this helps! Dear Lynn, I was going to share my frustration with my home buying experience. I was going to complain that I can’t go to open houses (because there aren’t any!) and that I have to wear a mask and gloves to even look at a house. Then there’s the whole mask thing in the stores and in public. I had plans to get a mani/pedi, a tattoo and get my hair fixed. After looking at all of my “issues,” I thought of just one thing: I want to hug my kids and grandkids. That’s what’s important to me. The rest can work itself out in the safest way possible so I can get to my happy place, being with my family. I’ll wear the mask, skip the tattoo and my roots can grow down to my shoulders. I’ll cut my own nails and keep checking for open houses. I’ll do all I can. I hope I didn’t waste your time. I’m just feeling that I’m learning what’s really important and what I can and can’t live without. Softening Up These Days
