NEW LOCATION - 271 MAIN STREET, DOWNTOWN GREAT BARRINGTON! SPONSORED CONTENT
Have you tried getting vertical with The Pass? Sheffield cannabis company uses Berkshire earth, workforce, pioneering spirit to serve friends near, far
BY NOAH HOFFENBERG Sponsored content editor SHEFFIELD — It’s time to get
vertical with your cannabis, people. What in the world does that mean? A very tall grow space? A rock-climbing cannabis club? No, neither. At The Pass — a Berkshire cannabis dispensary nestled in a picturesque corner of the county — you won’t see the phrase “vertical integration” painted on the walls or on your shopping bag. With vertical integration, The Pass handles all aspects of cannabis production, from “farm to label,” as they like to say. That means The Pass grows its own cannabis indoors and out; processes it for sale as flower, in foods and as concentrates; and then markets and sells it at the retail and wholesale levels. Being vertical takes the uncertainty, supply shortfalls and excessive costs, and throws them out the window, says Eric Moskowitz, director of operations for The Pass. It’s better for business, and spells good things for customers. With lower overhead, The Pass is able to focus on its mission to support human consciousness and to offer a singular Berkshire experience at its wide-open retail barn at 1375 N. Main St., near the Housatonic River. PACKING IT WITH MEANING For those who haven’t been to The Pass, which opened July 17, its name has a lot of meaning packed into it, says Ally Brown, marketing director at The Pass. “We like to say it stands for permission, community and evolution,” says Brown. “It refers to the passing of the vote to purchase cannabis legally in Massachusetts; passing communally, like passing a joint; and passing from one place to another, whether you are consuming cannabis in dif-
ferent ways or journeying through a mountain pass.” Customers are noticing The Pass difference, notes Brown. The company recently had an associate lauded as Budtender of the Month by Northeast Leaf Magazine, and online Google feedback about the experience has been great, too, she notes. If customer experience is paramount for The Pass, and Brown and other team members are responsive and do whatever it takes to make it right; this is not the case at all dispensaries, where their mistakes become your problem.
Clockwise from top: A view of an indoor cannabis grow at The Pass, a Sheffield organization that covers all the bases for its business and customers, from seed to wholesale distribution. That means a more reliable supply chain, which local enthusiasts appreciate; an exterior view of The Pass; the interior of The Pass retail store in Sheffield is bright and airy, perfect for pandemic-era shopping; Lemon Lime Sours, like Smarties with a kick; and Blue Raspberry Sours.
WHY DRIVE TO THE CITY AND WAIT? If you’re a cannabis consumer, you’ve probably had the chance to spend time in the other dispensaries elsewhere in Western Massachusetts. In some cases, you’ve spent a lot of time getting there, and then even more time standing in line. At The Pass, with its rural location, you get a far less cramped experience, which is all the more comforting now, during a planet wide outbreak of a deadly respiratory illness. To be open for business and available for the community has been especially gratifying during the pandemic, when nationwide anxiety has been rampant, says Moskowitz; for ages, cannabis has been used as a salve for physical and psychological ailments. “The fact that we’re here and allowed to be open is a blessing, and it’s been really wonderful for the community to get a product that’s helping them,” says Moskowitz. “We didn’t need to do a lot of external tenting or curbside sales, because we have an airy, bright and easily cleanable space for customers to come into.”
Other producers of flower on The Pass menu include Cultivate, of Leicester, and Strane, a Maryland company coming soon to Massachusetts. Industry connections and partnerships also soon will place The Pass brand on shelves in cannabis retail operations in Washington state, says Moskowitz. It’s the vertically-built operation that makes it possible for the company to serve local customers and clients on the other coast, notes Moskowitz.
LOCAL BUSINESS THAT’S GROWING The local business — owned by Christopher Weld, founder of Berkshire Mountain Distillers Inc. — employs about 55 staff, for
everything from processing and trimming to executive management and retail personnel; some staff work at an additional five greenhouses in Ashley Falls. Moskowitz says there’s been a learning curve, opening a business mid-pandemic, but that staff have developed a solid protocol to keep customers flowing in and out of the barn-based retail store, which has heating pylons in its intake porch to help with the winter chill. Customers come for the variety in The Pass’ inhouse strains, as well as the select vendors they carry; the hunt for them began long before any seeds were germinated in the Berkshires.
Moskowitz says Director of Cultivation Peter Steimer undertook a deep dive into selecting specific seed stock, which he began the moment he was hired. “It was a yearlong adventure to find the right genetics,” says Moskowitz. “Through strategic partnerships, we are able to get certain genetics that we know are robust, and are going to be healthy, volume-producing plants, while still looking to get certain strains that have the name appeal.” The Pass has grown the infamous GDP, or Grand Daddy Purple, a strain with name recognition to it. Similarly, it has produced Green Crack, which also has a reputation as a crowd pleaser. “Even though you might not know it personally, you have heard about it,” notes Moskowitz. “We’re also selecting strains that aren’t
prevalent here, so we’re able to bring some hype-worthy West Coast genetics to the East Coast. It’s always the right balance of indica, sativa and hybrids, to make sure customers always have options available.” OLD SCHOOL STRAINS AND NEWCOMERS The Pass grows its cannabis in multiple ways, from planting directly into Berkshire soil to using a cutting-edge mix of indoor and outdoor technology, including the state’s first light-deprivation greenhouse for cannabis. A recent glance at the menu reveals a slew of inhouse grown classics and new breeds, as well as products from other cannabis producers in the state. Current strains for assorted products include Cali Sour Diesel, Jack Herer, Black Mamba, OG Kush and Clementine.
LOCATION, LOCATION AND YET MORE LOCATION Company founders opted on the Sheffield location, because it made the most sense for consumers living or traveling in the southern Berkshires, not to mention its proximity to Connecticut and New York. Looking at license plates, it seems clients are coming from all over the region, but local folks are the primary customers, Moskowitz says. That means a lot to him and his teammates, as it’s indicative of Berkshirites leaving other, more established dispensaries to visit The Pass. The Pass is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Learn more or order ahead at thepass.co, or visit on Facebook at facebook. com/thepassdotco or Instagram at @thepass.co for more.

THC? CBD? How do we know what’s what? For a first entry in this recurring column, we disambiguate some herbal terms with the help of Berkshire Roots BY NOAH HOFFENBERG Sponsored content editor
Hi there, Eagle readers! Welcome to the first installment of The Cannabis Consultant, a new, sponsored column that aims to educate and help clear the air about medical and adult-use cannabis.
For this inaugural run, we sat down with the experts at Berkshire Roots, a medical and adult-use dispensary that’s both expanding its footprint and job opportunities, including for Massachusetts communities of color who have been disproportionately affected by the draconian drug laws of the 1980s and stigma that came long before. The company is expanding its Pittsfield production capacity and has expanded to Boston, with a retail operation in an underserved neighborhood. The cannabis operator has also teamed up with Berkshire Community College to provide students from a variety of educational, socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds with classroom and hands-on experience, horticulture certification and good-paying jobs in Berkshire Roots production facilities. I, for one, have lived with chronic pain for nearly five years: It’s chock full of good times! Because I never had interest in opiates as a solution, you can imagine my thanks in 2016, when our state government caught up with ancient medicine, and places like Berkshire Roots cropped up to help people like me and the many others who live with pain and far worse. For medical patients and those adults who use cannabis or who prefer it over alcohol, Berkshire Roots has proved to be a lot like “Cheers,” where everybody knows your name (with cannabis being legal, it’s OK if they know your name now). Berkshire Roots staff is friendly, knowledgeable and always ready to help. It doesn’t hurt that they have classic and new school beats pumping from their surround sound speakers. Here’s what they had to say recently in a chat with The Eagle, as we all look ahead with hope for the new year:
Q
For starters, what’s the difference between medicinal cannabis versus adult-use cannabis?
A
The answer is — they are the same. When a physician helps a patient treat an ailment or condition by recommending cannabis, the patient will purchase legal cannabis products that are the same as what is offered to adultuse consumers. Both have tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the most abundant cannabinoid in marijuana that causes psychoactive effects, as well as a host of other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, each of which have effects on the human mind and body.
Q
Cannabidiol, or CBD, products seem to be everywhere these days. Is that a medicinal option?
BERKSHIRE ROOTS PHOTO
10th Planet is a new strain for Berkshire Roots in Pittsfield.
A
CBD is believed to affect the immune and nervous systems. In addition to its mitigating effect on anxiety, pain and inflammation, CBD has shown promising results as a treatment for some forms of epilepsy. Often people refer to CBD products from hemp as “medicinal” and view cannabis-derived products as recreational. The truth is … that’s not true. In fact, CBD is also found in cannabis-derived products in varying ratios. Hemp is a close cousin of cannabis, but the legal hemp/ CBD products cannot contain more than a tiny bit of THC (0.3 percent, to be exact). The unknown issue for any consumer is whether a CBD product will help alleviate the ailment or condition a person wants to treat. If it does, great. If not, you might need that ensemble effect — some level of THC — to unlock the endocannabinoid system to get the results you want.
Q
Wait! What? Endocannabinoid system? Ensemble effect? What are they?
A
In 1964, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, an Israeli chemist, announced that he and his colleagues were able to isolate tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), one of hundreds of compounds found in the cannabis plant known as cannabinoids. The discovery was linked to a little-known part of the human body called the endocannabinoid system. Although not well studied, this system exists within our bodies just like we have respiratory, nervous and digestive systems, and relates to sleep, mood, appetite, memory, reproduction and fertility, according to some
Clockwise from top left are: Packages of Berkshire Roots premium flower, bottles of THC tincture and some THC chews. For medical patients and those adults who use cannabis, Berkshire Roots has proved to be a lot like “Cheers,” where everybody knows your name.

of the latest research. Another famous cannabis researcher, the late Dr. Lester Grinspoon, a former professor of psychiatry at Harvard University, referred to the combination of elements as the ensemble effect. Called the entourage effect by some, Dr. Grinspoon believed the relationship between the elements was more like members of an orchestra, each playing their part, as opposed to a star surrounded by friends (the entourage) who do not play a role.
Q
Should I pursue a hemp-derived product or a cannabis-derived item?
A
The distinction is whether one versus the
other will help you achieve relief, relaxation, or whatever benefit you are seeking. It’s also possible, with the right cannabis-derived product, at the right dose, taken at the right time of day, you can limit the psychoactive effect of cannabis-derived products. To discuss what’s right for you, you can speak with Berkshire Roots’ dedicated and educated team members.
Q
How should I get in touch with the experts at Berkshire Roots?
A
Come visit us! We welcome all 21-plus, with a legal ID of course, and also offer pre-orders online. We’ve built a chat function on our website to allow our
customers another means of access to information through our team. It’s another way that folks are able to connect, ask questions, search for details about our locations and products. We have team members available during our normal business hours who are here to help. You can ask general questions, like what type of ID can I use, or about specific products, anything that will help you with your Berkshire Roots experience. We understand this can be overwhelming and intimidating or just a new situation for many, and this virtual option is a great way to break the ice.
Q
What else is on the horizon for Berkshire Roots?
A
Much more to come! We recently tested a new web feature, our virtual cannabis consultations. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can select a time best for you to meet remotely with a team member to discuss your cannabis journey. Do you have questions about cannabis, hemp or CBD products and treatments? Send your questions to The Cannabis Consultant at nhoffenberg@ berkshireeagle.com for possible inclusion in an upcoming installment of The Cannabis Consultant, a Berkshire Roots-sponsored, informational column that aims to elevate the discussion and knowledge about cannabis.
The company is expanding its Pittsfield production capacity and has expanded to Boston, with a retail operation in an underserved neighborhood. The cannabis operator has also teamed up with Berkshire Community College to provide students from a variety of with classroom and hands-on experience, horticulture certification and good-paying jobs in Berkshire Roots production facilities.

Tech focused, family centered: UCP answers the call during COVID-19 Western Massachusetts agency helps people with disabilities to stay connected The pandemic is a wake-up call for all people to be connected by technology, especially people with disabilities. At the same time, technology statistics show that society could better serve people with disabilities who need new technology and training to help them gain more independence. According to recent research, people with disabilities: • comprise about 23 percent of all adults in Massachusetts; • across the state, more than 20,000 residents are caring for a family member with an intellectual or developmental disability at home; • are far less likely to use the internet, at 54 percent, compared with 81 percent of adults without disabilities; • and less likely to own a desktop or laptop computer, at 67 percent for ages 18 to 64, compared with 84 percent of nondisabled people of the same age group. These statistics — from the Massachusetts Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers, Pew Research Center, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — show that many people with disabilities are left behind. Technology is vital to survive during this crisis and to function in society. For people who report having computers, many lack the knowledge and training necessary to make them work optimally. They report bandwidth and connectivity problems, as wells as hardware and software issues. UCP of Western Massachusetts has an answer: its brand new Community Tech Support Center. It offers tech set up, training and ongoing technical support for people with disabilities, who have received hardware and computers from Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission Vocational Rehabilitation program. Many of the services can be handled remotely, and the service is free, serving people from Pittsfield to Worcester. This program enables people to adjust to the new “online” normal — helping them seek employment and fill

With such a large percentage of the population reporting a disability, this takes a toll on the entire family unit, Garozzo notes. He wants the Western Massachusetts region to know that UCP
stands ready to help. “We’re here each step of the way for families, while we connect them with vital community resources to overcome their challenges,” Garozzo says. The agency operates two Family Support Centers in Pittsfield and North Adams, which provide care at all stages and ages of life with programming for children, students, adults and seniors. Its newest family program, serving nearby Franklin and Hampshire
counties, called Intensive Flexible Family Support, provides help for families experiencing crisis situations, which could result in children being at-risk. Garozzo notes that support areas include food stamps, fuel assistance, social security, health insurance or financial assistance. In addition, UCP offers assistive technology across all of the agency’s programming throughout Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties.

DIGITAL
ADVERTISING
Digital advertising is a vital part of any organization's marketing strategy, and the Shopper's Guide offers a solution for all of your digital marketing needs.
advertising on the Shopper’s Guide website reaches...
LEADERBOARD AD 728 PX X 90 PX
MEDIUM BOX AD
Second Homeowners in the Area
300 PX X 250 PX
And Area Classified Advertisers Those folks, whose hard-earned dollars swell the till of your cash register during the season, stay in touch with life in the Berkshires and Taconics by way of the website shoppersguideinc.com. The attraction? The commercial conversation we have among ourselves on the pages of every issue of the Shopper’s Guide. It turns out that the area’s second homeowners, be they in Brooklyn or Brookline, want to listen in.
MEDIUM BOX AD 300 PX X 250 PX
You can reach this very special audience through an ad on the Shopper’s Guide website. A 728 x 90px leaderboard ad or a 300 x 250px medium box ad are priced right. Sold by the thousands of impressions, either a leaderboard or a medium box ad will connect you with just the customer you seek. And like radio, both ads can be “dayparted” to reach early risers, midday movers, or late-afternoon shakers, ready to spend their money on the goods or service you offer. 413.528.0095 OR BRAD@SHOPPERSGUIDEINC.COM WWW.SHOPPERSGUIDEINC.COM 271 MAIN STREET, GREAT BARRINGTON, MA
