What’s New?

Greg Strachan Chief Executive Officer

Adobe Spark is now Free for New Zealand Schools Hi Everyone Incredibly it’s May already. Term 2 has kicked off and the year is almost halfway through! Over the past few months we have been busy supporting and attending a number of educational conferences, and during the holiday break we have been assisting numerous schools with their transition to the Cloud. As a part of transitioning to these new cloud systems and toolsets, it is critical schools understand the different methods in which this can be achieved. The change management considerations are often an item that falls by the wayside. The days have past when you return from break to find you have a new PC with a new version of Windows and Office, then would continue to save data to the teacher’s drive. Migrating to pure Cloud technologies not only changes the toolsets but the method in which schools work and operate. There is a lot to consider, and the “big bang” change of the past system upgrades is not as easy, especially when all stakeholders need some form of Professional Development to understand how to operate and make the most of these fantastic technologies. Moving into term two, we continue to grow and develop our teams so that we can deliver as much local support as possible to our clients.  To this end, I am proud to introduce Auckland Client Manager Michael Delgrosso and Business Development Manager Nelson Williams. Both Michael and Nelson have a huge amount of school and Cloud technology experience between them. They are both looking forward to working closely with new and existing clients.

Adobe is giving away free software for schools to foster creative problem-solving More than half of the educators that don’t have access to creative problem-solving tools list school budgets as a reason — so Adobe is giving away student software for free. Beginning in April, Adobe Spark Premium will be available to schools and universities without a paid subscription. The news comes after Adobe shared details of a study on creative problem-solving during a technology and education exhibition in Europe in January. Adobe Spark is a design program for graphics, web pages, and video. The basic version is free to use, but the premium option, which removes the Adobe Spark logo from the graphics and allows for more custom color and other options, costs $10 a month. Beginning this spring, Adobe will offer the premium options free to schools. Along with making Spark Premium free for students, Adobe is now adjusting their licensing so that students under 13 can use the Creative Cloud, another change that will also launch in April. Currently, Adobe IDs are only available to users age 13 and up, which means kids that wanted access to software like Photoshop, Lightroom, or InDesign had to use an adult’s account.

Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a great term two and of course, if there is anything you require around ICT please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team!

Adobe says the change is designed to improve accessibility to creative tools for educators and students. In a recent study, Adobe found that 90 percent of educators and policymakers said creative problem-solving inside the curriculum needs improvement. Based on 2,000 survey participants from the U.S., U.K., Japan, and Germany, three quarters said they thought jobs requiring creative problem-solving skills were less likely to be replaced by computers, machinery, and other automation.

Client Story:

Tararua College Located in the Lower North Island town of Pahiatua, Tararua College is taking the next step of their digital journey with New Era IT.

T

ararua College, a co-educational high school, is located in the rural town of Pahiatua. With a roll of 320 students, the school aims to provide an education that allows students choice, flexibility and sustainability in their future pathways. “We want to engage every student to be the best that they can be, to support their learning wherever they may be, and increasingly that’s coming beyond the classroom.” says principal Jon Ward. Due to being founded in 1960, the school has some ageing infrastructure. That prompted a renewed focus in 2017 to modernise both ICT infrastructure and approaches to teaching and learning. Previously the school was supported by a business IT support provider. “We had an outfit supporting our IT that was a commercially based outfit and had a very good sense of what was right for a commercial environment, but didn’t really understand a school environment,” explains Jon. Being a smaller school, Jon had a finite budget. The school went through a tender process, offering it to various companies. “New Era came back with a very positive result in terms of what they could offer,” says Jon.

Partnering for Success New Era has worked closely with the team to address the ageing infrastructure and build a plan for the future. “We were server-based,” explains Jon. “We’re moving towards a Cloud-based environment. But it’s really looking at what’s best for our school within the constraints of our finance.” Alongside strategic development and project management, New Era provides onsite IT support. A technician visits every week while automated systems simplify day to days tasks such as device management and monitoring. But where New Era offers the most value is with proven approaches that are working elsewhere in education. “More than anything else, it’s giving us the advice that

we need, and sharing information from other schools,” says Jon.

Empowering Teaching and Learning The developments are all about creating flexibility for students. “We’re moving to a far more flexible environment where they can be inside a classroom, they can be sitting on the floor, they can be working outside, wherever it may be: That’s what we’re achieving. And it really means that students can develop a sense of learning using technology rather than using technology for technology’s sake,” says Jon. Jon notes that an in-depth training program has been necessary for both students and staff. “One of the crucial things is that you can’t just rely on giving a teacher or a student a laptop or a device and saying ‘off you go’. We spent a lot of time supporting staff, especially to actually learn how to use the technology appropriately, use the appropriate devices in a way that benefits learning,” he says. “The Staff at the College wanted to use technology but didn’t necessarily know how to use it effectively. “The tools that they’d previously been given didn’t necessarily allow them to use technology in a way that was educationally focused,” says Jon. Emily Look, Head of Faculty for the Arts, traditionally found collecting evidence of a student’s contribution for assessment a challenge. “I used to have my camera out, and I’d record conversations and discussions,” she says. “We’d have massive, massive big sheets of paper that the kids had scribbled all over with felt.” For Emily, the most exciting thing about integrating technology is that there are always new things to try. “I’ve just started using Flipgrid to record student statements of intention,” she says. Tools that were previously unavailable are enabling new ways of collaborating. “We do a lot of collaborative work. So at the moment, for example, we are writing our school production. We have

“I think the school using technology has actually become more proactive, especially in class. I’ve definitely seen a big mood change with people” - Jerome McLean-Burton, Head Boy

thirteen students all collaborating on the same script.” Technology hasn’t entirely negated the use of pen and paper though. “We still do a bit of that,” says Emily. However, technology now augments the traditional processes, with paper notes being photographed and uploaded digitally for later use. “It’s just a lot easier to track the progress as well as track who has contributed what to any particular project.” So what do students think of the approach? “I think the school using technology has actually become more proactive, especially in class. I’ve seen definitely a big mood change with people” says Head Boy Jerome. “When you’re going into the workforce, some requirements are ‘do you know how to use technology, do you know how to use a computer… So I think bringing it in from school is actually good because you’re actually building those steps for in the future.” Students are now using their devices at lunchtime to catch up on work or research topics. “That’s a real positive for me”, says Jon. The advantage for him is the way students access things in a modern environment. “It’s very much about the flipped classroom approach where they are finding the information, they’re teaching each other, they’re sharing information and then they’re comparing it with the class to ensure that there’s common understanding”.

Engaging a Community. Bringing the community along on the journey is essential to the school. “One of our key focusses is actually to develop an understanding amongst our parent body and the wider community about how technology is part of what we need to do, not just something that we’re playing with.”

“When you’re going into the workforce, some requirements are ‘do you know how to use technology, do you know how to use a computer… So I think bringing it in from school is actually good because you’re actually building those steps for in the future.” - Jerome McLean-Burton, Head Boy

In photos: Above: Flexibility between traditional labs and mobility enable new ways of working. Below: Principal Jon Ward with students.

Looking to the Future Jon looks to a future where technology is ubiquitous. “It needs to be everywhere”, and the reason for that is that it is everywhere once students leave school. The College is addressing the availability of technology by Implementing a 1:1 device programme across the school to enable staff to plan around the use of technology in the classroom. “What we need to do is say, OK, we’re setting up a school that is training students to work in the real-world environment. Therefore they have to face the challenges of the use of technology; they have to know how to use it effectively.”

Maintaining an open discussion about technology is part of the process. “It’s important for me to really stress to parents. I know a lot of parents are concerned about technology and the effects that it has on students engaging with each other. Especially on social media platforms.”

“Technology is a tool, and we need to remember that. Technology isn’t the answer. It’s not something that will replace teachers, or students actually engaging with the material. It’s a tool to help them engage. And we will always have pen and paper; we’ll always be writing things as well. We’ll be accessing things from different media. Technology is just one of those mediums.”

“We need to engage students in the process of learning about how to use it safely, and if we don’t do that at school, when will we do it?”

Fermentation: Supporting a Culture of Success Experienced leaders, vintners, and cheese-makers (three of my favourite things) have something in common: They all understand the importance of the concept of time. By Tony Gilbert National Education Specialist

T

he tension between the rise of technology, and humanity’s ability to make ethical and moral decisions on its use, is not a new concept to examine. In the last couple of decades, the benefits of genetic modification and engineering have been widely debated, with the idea of ‘cloning’ perhaps the most extreme endpoint to consider. But now the lines between organic and inorganic chemistry and technology itself are starting to blur. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and the likes, our longstanding faith in the superior power of the human mind, and its ability to control the things that it creates is being questioned. What many years ago was considered science fiction, is now quickly becoming science fact and so the cycle of life imitating art seems set to continue. I believe there is some inevitability (unless of course, Trump blows up the world), in the growth of these technologies, and at least their initial use to assist with many everyday functions that we perform. With the accelerating use of personal data being collected to analyse our habits, preferences behaviour, next week’s grocery shop could be on the doorstep before we know we are running short - maybe even including some items that we didn’t even know we wanted yet.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should I believe that in our rush to get to the end goal, we are missing a crucial step: asking the fundamental question, “Just because we have the technology, does that necessarily mean that we should use it?”. Undoubtedly, this is a massive question that impacts almost every facet of the modern world, so let’s narrow it down a bit. For the purposes of these musings, I would like to ask this question within the context of a young person’s developing mind within our education system. To narrow it down even further: Their physical brain development. I am no neurologist, but there are some basic understandings of the human brain that we can use to inform this discussion: 1. We are building “roads” from the moment we are born. The neural connections in our brain get thicker and essentially stronger from the moment we are born through a process called myelination. The stimuli we experience through our senses inform the establishment of these connections and the resultant myelination. The more you experience (for good and bad) the stronger these connections get. As life progresses, we find they we take these “roads” by default and any moves to change the path we usually take can prove both difficult and time-consuming. 2. Use it or lose it. As some “roads” dominate others, the unused roads start to wither and can, in fact, break altogether. Anyone who has gone back to study or do something they haven’t done in a long time knows the frustration that comes with trying to pick up where you left off a long time ago - it just doesn’t come as easy as it once did. 3. The brain only has a certain level of capacity. As much as every parent may like their child to be a genius, this is by far and away the exception to normal development. Additionally, the development of genius has often been shown to come with detrimental consequences in the form of other underdeveloped skills, relative to age and population. It seems the capacity of our brain may be fairly even, it just gets filled with different ‘stuff’.

An environment for success Can you optimise an environment for the best outcome? Yes and you should. However, coming back to my original statement, some things just take time and it is dangerous to interfere with such processes as it can undermine everything - you run the risk of being left with vinegary wine and lacklustre cheese. Optimisation should never be mistaken for rushing, and efficiencies should never be at the expense of the end results. In theory, if we all stuck to our New Year resolutions and the advice given to us by self-help experts, we could create the optimal environment in which to function; mind, body and spirit - right? Our lives would be healthier, more efficient, faster, better… all the time. All the time? Really? I’m not so sure. I think that without time to process, without time to let things bed-down, without time to analyse and grow from both success and failure, we would soon be off-balance in mind, body and spirit, and back to square one.

There’s value in the journey I think that we need to create environments that allow our students to be able to choose what they want to do based on preference and outcome. Environments that aren’t limiting because we rushed to set them up. Again, good things (and great outcomes) take time. If complimentary technology is available to assist with creating these environments (and believe me it is!), then, by all means, try it, use it, learn from it, but remember you don’t have to use it all at once! Can you wait too long? For sure. But the whole point of this article is to encourage you to stop and think. Recently I have been working with a number of schools who have taken the opportunity to do just that. After initially rushing into various programmes ranging from Chromebook deployment to inking and BYOD, they have stepped back for a moment to try to better understand the link between the technology itself, and the outcomes they have witnessed vs. the goals that drove their adoption in the first place. Post-implementation, where are their students now at, and is the environment right for them? It can be hard to consider all of these things when the day-to-day running of a school consists of so many operational details, but as leaders within your schools, you must take time to pause and reflect. The growth of technology and it’s permeation into all aspects of our lives is not slowing down, and as such the boundaries will become even more blurred. You lose the essence of things when you rush to adopt them and (to be a little corny) miss the journey for the destination. Besides, when it comes to IT, that solid destination point never really exists - it just keeps shifting further into the future. Would you play Chopin at double speed? Would that Merlot or aged cheddar taste as good if you halved its maturation? Just because we can, should we? Let New Era IT assist you to set up and support the environment that allows you the time to make the choices you want, in the time you want. Using the correct background integration services, providing you with technology that matches your desired outcomes, being ready with the right services to save you time and money down the track. Nga mihi mahana,
