From the CEO Hi Everyone I hope the recent term break gave you some time out and the ability to re-energise. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new clients and staff who are joining us this term. Term 3 is here and is the start of some exciting things for ICT in education. If you don’t know already, the Network for Learning has announced that they will be upgrading all of their firewall devices in every school starting in August 2018. New Era is the tip of the spear for this project, and we have already assisted N4L with over 15 transitions for pilot schools. We are now on the way with transitions for 80 schools starting throughout the country in early August. New Era was chosen primarily because of our flexibility, scale, experience, nationwide reach and (very proudly may I say) downright bloody good people who will make it happen! With the upgrade, you may ask: “What will be the benefits to our school?” Briefly, the new devices (Fortinet Firewalls) will have the capability to transfer more data faster. As a result, your N4L connection will not be choked as has sometimes been seen with the older devices.
Web and content filtering will have a significant upgrade, those VPNs that students love will be able to be controlled, and reporting will improve. As the N4L connections increase speed to gigabit and beyond, there will be no bottlenecks from ageing hardware. Aside from the N4L project, we are working alongside our clients, assisting them with their ICT planning for the rest of 2018, while scoping and planning where they need to be to take advantage of the fantastic new technologies available now and coming in the future. One of the hot topics at present is Virtual Reality. In this space, we are very proud to offer ClassVR. ClassVR is a dedicated system designed for Education from the ground up. This is not some consumer based VR headset with a whale swimming by or Starwars drones shooting it out. This system has its own dedicated, cloud-based educational content management portal that allows schools to pick and choose topics that are relevant and engaging for students. If you would like a demo or more info, please drop a line to info@newerait.co.nz. If you are a client speak to your client manager. Finally, before I go a word to the wise: As the rush to be in the cloud continues, make sure that when planning to embark on your “pure” cloud journey, you engage the right people and don’t just look at price or salesman promises. Make sure you are clear on where you will end up, who will be there to support you once you are there and that you really are receiving ‘trusted, qualified advice’. All the best for term 3. Cheers,
Above: It’s great to have students drop in to find out about what we do. Matthew and Vicki from Bream Bay dropped in to see what we get up to in the Auckland headquarters. Left: A certain CEO had a special birthday in April, can you guess which one?

Pakuranga College is a leader and an innovator in e-learning. In this series of workshops, Pakuranga teachers and leaders will share their journey so far and share the tools and techniques they use every day to promote authentic and meaningful e-learning experiences in and out of the classroom. This free series of workshops are being presented in partnership with New Era IT. For more information, see the Learning Corner on Page 21.
Forty Gates? New Era IT and the Network for Learning Partner for the Managed Network Upgrade
Advanced security services (including enhanced VPN filtering) Individualised filtering – that supports granular filtering (i.e. by students and staff) Smart and simple reporting
The Network for Learning has recently emailed the schools to ascertain who is the primary contact for the ongoing Managed Network change. Please ensure that you have completed the online form and indicated that New Era IT is your primary IT Support Provider. We’ll be working with the N4L to ensure that your transition is seamless and will be in touch with transitioning schools with more information soon.
New Era IT a 2018 Microsoft Partner Award Finalist Earlier this year, New Era IT was named a finalist in the 2018 Microsoft New Zealand Partner Awards in three categories: Cloud for Good, Empowering Employees and Engaging Customers. While we weren’t able to nab the award on the night, we are immensely proud to be the only education partner to be nominated in the 2018 awards. The company was recognised among a national field of innovative Microsoft partners that are addressing their customers’ needs and digital transformations through Microsoft technology. “These three finalist selections are especially gratifying because it shows New Era IT is a team effort,” said Greg Strachan, Chief Executive Officer at New Era IT. “We put people first, both employees and customers, and that results in successful implementations of Microsoft and other tech solutions. Our vision also includes empowering schools and communities, and we have been able to leverage the cloud to achieve these goals. As the only education services provider finalist this year, this recognition places New Era IT as the education leader in the Microsoft Partner ecosystem.”
During Term 3 this year, the Network for learning will begin a rollout of upgraded hardware to all schools on the managed network. New Era IT has been selected as the first Education IT Provider to complete upgrades, starting in August. During this upgrade, we will visit schools to swap out the existing Cisco managed router with a smaller, quieter firewall device. FortiGate firewalls are a leading solution for network
“We are pleased to recognise New Era IT as a Microsoft New Zealand Partner Award Finalist in three categories this year,” said Phil Goldie, One Commercial Partner Director Microsoft New Zealand. “New Era IT is a great example of a company using Microsoft technology to provide customercentric solutions in an innovative and forward-thinking way.” The Microsoft New Zealand Partner Awards recognise Microsoft partners that have developed and delivered exceptional Microsoft-based solutions for their customers during the past year.

The changes in the Education Council and the Practising Teachers Criteria over the past few years have been significant. A focus of my own post graduate study was asking the question: Do teachers value the data that is used to perform their appraisal?
A
significant number of factors influences the objective of appraisal from the formal to the informal. Formally the PTCs and associated indicators are designed to challenge the teacher around their practice and encourage reflection on their teaching practice. An appraisal is a requirement to maintain teacher registration and now must have specific evidence kept regularly and, with the depth to inform the judgements made. An appraiser or the Teachers Council themselves could request evidence at any time. More “informally” appraisal is influenced by the culture of the school. It is easy to put this in the hands of a Principal or Senior Leadership team, but this is like blaming the traffic when you’re sitting in the gridlock. I doubt that there are teachers out there that haven’t experienced or heard of both ends of the appraisal spectrum. From ‘something that helps me be a better teacher’ to ‘something that gets in the way of me doing my job’. The key is the appraiser as an individual and the school itself has the power to make of that what they will. It’s fundamental that teachers believe that reflection then growth make them a better teacher and appraisal empowers them with the awareness to do their job better. I’m sure there are a bunch of self-help books which one way or another say this same thing. This appraisal process and culture itself has evolved and will continue to do so. At New Era, it’s been a similar journey as we’ve reflected on the growth of our network appraisals. Initially, our approach was a hardware health type scenario, that then looked at software. Then, application integration, creative use to best practice, and in more recent times a school’s aspirational objectives around the desired teaching and learning outcomes. When we present a network appraisal document to a school, it can be quite confrontational. It can shine a light on things that have been missed, ignored or choices that are questionable. It can raise hard questions about personnel, financial control and pedagogical rationale. Most principals and BoTs are not afraid of this process in many aspects of the operation and development of their school. However, in ICT it can be challenging when they lack the logistics or high-level knowledge to check if what they know is correct. Think of a science teacher making judgements on the assessment of music portfolio or a music teacher analysing a new-entrant programme.
When making decisions, you rely on patterns, evidence and best practice. Fortunately, this is well established in teaching practice with research underpinning pedagogies. In ICT schools are fortunate to have the Connected Learning Advisory, but beyond that, schools rely on their knowledge. They talk to other schools. They rely upon the people that they work with. However, in reality, this is not always based on evidence that would stand up as hard fact. A New Era network appraisal is designed to firstly, give you an honest account of what is going on in your school relative to best practice. We are under no illusion that budgets are tight and sometimes choices are made because of this constraint and others. Things in ICT also organically grow over time. Decisions are made that might have been different with hindsight.
“When we present a network appraisal document to a school, it can be quite confrontational. It can shine a light on things that have been missed, ignored or choices that are questionable. It can raise hard questions about personnel, financial control and pedagogical rationale. ”
Secondly, the appraisal is to indicate tensions that may exist in that all-important link between the technology and the practice. Technology should only exist to help augment learning relationships and serve as a tool for better teaching practice. Finally, the appraisal acts as a vehicle for the tough conversations and reflection. If we all espouse that we are there to advocate for kids and produce the best environment for learning, our actions should match up. An ICT Network Appraisal from New Era is the beginning of an open and robust relationship. Done with dignity, respect and pragmatism, it can assist with hard decisions based on facts and produce better outcomes for your students. •

Client Story:
De la Salle College “Microsoft Office 365 empowers students, gives them more responsibility and allows us to individualise the way we interact with students,” says John Singh, Director ICT at South Auckland’s De La Salle College. “And, for us, having a common platform makes it much easier to function within the school environment. We have moved from the blackboard to the whiteboard and now to the screen. The classroom is still the priority, but we have added a whole new dimension to the way we teach.” De La Salle College has a roll of 1000 boys from across Auckland, predominantly from South Auckland, and a staff of 110 including 65 teachers. The College is tasked with being a high impact provider of quality education in line with Catholic character and La Sallian tradition. As such, De La Salle has embraced technology in general and Microsoft Office 365 specifically to empower and train students for tomorrow’s challenges. This has been possible with the ongoing support and vision of the Senior Leadership Team and Board of Trustees. Schools have diverse needs as do the communities they serve. Indeed, in many communities, schools are a valuable resource over and above academics. They instil values, provide a focus for community involvement and foster a sense of belonging in otherwise ethnically and economically disparate populations. And, increasingly, the glue that bonds together students, educators, parents and the public is technology. “Microsoft Office 365 has been an outstanding addition and learning resource for the Staff and students of De La Salle,” says Principal Mr Myles Hogary. “The common platform provides a consistent tool which is widely used across all curriculum areas in the College giving our Staff and students a structured format which makes it much simpler to access resources and store their own work. The applications which are available to our learning community allows learning, feedback and assessment to take place within and outside the normal classroom environment.” “Providing our young men with current ICT infrastructure which complements their classroom learning has been a priority for the College,” he continues. “Microsoft Office 365 has met the needs of our staff and students through its intuitive format and ability to be used across the whole College.”
Microsoft and the Ministry of Education “Working with our technology partner, New Era IT, we took advantage of the joint Ministry of Education Schools Agreement with Microsoft. This provided, at no charge to end users, up to five copies of Office 365 Pro Plus for students and staff as well as a powerful suite of learning and collaboration tools for the school’s computers,” explains Singh. “This gave us the platform we had envisioned at the outset.” As with any major upgrade, implementing a unified solution across servers, the cloud, laptops and desktops over wired and wireless networks was a team effort. “Professional development for teachers and staff has been a vital aspect for us,” he continues. “Uptake varies with the individual and we have structured our PD for maximum impact. Lead ICT Teachers, together with New Era IT and Microsoft Educator Mr John Phelps, have mentored colleagues and provided a well-developed programme for professional development training on specific aspects of technology for the last three years.” Professional development is on-going. “We have turnover, so new people are coming in and need to learn the system,” he continues. “Plus, with all the systems in place, we have access to many more pedagogical resources that require a certain amount of time and effort to understand. But a major plus for Office 365 is that it is a defacto standard and most staff are already familiar with the interface which means that we can spend more time with training on specific pedagogical applications.”
Modern management for teaching and administration “Microsoft OneDrive and OneNote are two particular features that have made our lives much easier in our dayto-day interactions,” explains Singh. “Now that students have access to email, they can view assignments and lessons via OneNote and submit homework via OneDrive. Before Office 365, I would have to hand-out USB drives with the work and then collect them once the assignments were completed. It was time-consuming and USB sticks have a habit of being misplaced. Not so with Office 365. And with everyone connected, feedback and reviews are so much more streamlined.” De La Salle College relies on Microsoft Office 365 for both administration and teaching. “In the Arts Faculty,” says Jackson Tan, Head of Department Visual Arts, Assistant

Head of Faculty, Arts, “our appraisal structure revolves around the use of Microsoft Planner OneNote Notebooks in Office 365. This engine allows us to easily access and share information, as well as provide a framework for an effective appraisal document/folder. All our team members confidently work on Office 365 OneNote Notebooks and continually add to the knowledge base throughout the year.” “Overall, Office 365 has had a positive impact on my teaching practice by using it to create effective communication in the teams I work in. It has proved to be a useful tool to create frameworks for file sharing and discussions. The students have benefited from its integration into our school with more efficient file sharing properties and the capacity to save digital work as well.”
Promoting literacy skills Office 365 provides more ways for students to express themselves. “We have found that Office 365 helps promote literacy skills beyond cut and paste,” says Lynette Hay, Digital Information Technology Teacher and De La Salle’s Communities of Learning Across School Lead. “Plus, it gives us the ability to provide students with immediate feedback, multiple iterations and a medium for positive reinforcement.” Mrs Hay is a strong believer in Microsoft’s effectiveness in the NZ education community. “I made the effort to become a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert,” she says, “because I felt that Microsoft would be a major force for good in the education sector. This has given me the skills to mentor teachers and Staff here at De La Salle as well as the wider educational community via the MoE’s Communities of Learning initiative. By providing a common platform, a familiar interface and opportunities for professional development, Microsoft has given us the resources to support both modern management for ourselves and positive digital outcomes for students.”
Microsoft Office 365: A student perspective Students are equally enthusiastic about Microsoft 365. “I use Microsoft 365 as a tool in finishing my school and homework tasks within the time frame set by my teachers,” says Hans Higgins, a Year 12 Student at the College. “It is a convenient tool for a teacher as well as a student like me. It helps me to develop my assignments step-by-step and produce quality work at the end. Microsoft 365 gives all the benefits a student or teacher needs from writing a report to sharing files wherever they are and helps create a better learning experience for a student or teacher since it provides a platform to work together to share ideas and tasks.” “For me,” he continues, “the main benefit I’ve gained from the program is convenience. It makes things easier for me, my friends and my family. Microsoft 365 is a program built for this generation. A generation where technology is developing. For all of us, having the chance
to access everything at once in a single place is what we want. Whether its writing an essay, doing a PowerPoint presentation or collaborating on projects with classmates, Microsoft 365 helps us achieve our learning goals more efficiently.” De La Salle has been using Microsoft 365 for three years. “The greatest benefit,” says Singh, “over and above the facilitation of our day-to-day interactions with students and colleagues, is that students have been empowered to take charge of their educational needs. They can work at their own pace, on their own time and in their own space. Indeed, this is the learning style many students prefer. And it is their responsibility to ensure that they complete their assignments on time. If they need extra help, they can email us. If we sense that a student is falling behind, we can communicate our concerns directly and identify what the issues might be. Anywhere, anytime (within reason) and from any device.” The benefits cross over into the community as well. “Each student, teacher and staff member are entitled to five licenses of Microsoft Office 365 that they can load on their laptops, their home PCs and smartphone,” continues Singh. “Currently 30% of our Year 11 student families have taken advantage of this offer and are participating in the School’s BYOD Programme launched earlier this year. Parents are a critical component for student achievement and the ability to share experiences on-line builds stronger communities.” De La Salle College is taking full advantage of the benefits of Microsoft Office 365. “Open communications, on-line assignments, emailed homework, a common interface, everyone connected, the list goes on and on,” concludes Singh. “Added to that is a world of additional resources as part of the Microsoft Education ecosystem. Not to mention all of the other third-party teaching applications like Education Perfect, Matheletics, Lexile, Minecraft, Code HS, Edmodo that are available. Today’s students are tomorrow’s professionals, leaders and role models. It is essential that we give them the tools they need to succeed. And Microsoft Office 365 provides the foundation that we can build on to train for tomorrow’s challenges.” • For more information, visit www.newerait.co.nz/cloud

Simplifying the Cloud Conversation Some of the most intriguing rhetoric that I have heard recently concerns the cost of ‘moving to the cloud’. Those of you that know me know I have a very low tolerance for the gap between people’s theory and what the reality is. Since the establishment of New Era 22 years ago, our drive has been to make meaningful change for teachers and students in New Zealand schools. It hasn’t always been easy, particularly in an ICT driven world that is rapidly changing and is prone to flashy lights and fads. Despite these challenges, we’ve continually prided ourselves on “running interference” so that the schools and communities can spend their valuable resources in a responsible, efficient way.
Our Approach to the Cloud When it comes to the Cloud, New Era’s approach is simple: To guide the journey, driven by the specific needs of each school community. We account for what you need, what you want, and most importantly when you want it. We leverage our infrastructure, our competency and our technology partners to ensure that solutions are tailored to meet school’s needs right now and in the future. In our classrooms, we carefully monitor the experience our students have with tools and technologies to ensure an appropriate and exponential level of success. We know that making things too difficult, or not providing the right support, can lead to demotivation and disengagement. It is no different for staff. New Era strives to responsibly work with school’s to embrace change in a way that means they can not only become more efficient but can become innovative and engaging with their students.
Should the Cloud be Free? Some technology providers state that the cloud should be free; we agree. Our approach remains the same as it always has: Guiding schools on their technology journey. However, teaching is more than the sum of its parts. The tools cannot replace the trade, and now the tools are free. Schools have the opportunity to rethink their journey by investing in quality support, devices and training or by taking their time to avoid “big bang” changes which disrupt students and teachers. We all comprise on price at one point or another;
more so when external pressures are applied, making us question what the value of something is. When you consider the impact of this decision, however, things change. Buying decisions in schools impact the education and outcomes for all students, staff, and faculty. Investment decisions in education must be responsible, encompassing factors represent significant value; not the most significant discount. Managing this approach responsibly, especially with something as critical as ICT, will not only change the way students learn but pay off in spades in the future.
Investing in Meaningful Change With the rapid pace of change, technology is no longer the limiting factor for schools. It’s exciting that we are now at the stage where we can implement a serverless solution congruent with the Schools’ Cloud Transformation Project. Frankly, that’s the easy bit. Lasting and sustainable changes that make a difference to our students is harder to achieve. Although the technological shift is an essential aspect of this, the time and effort come with doing it well. This is not a new concept, of course. The assumption is always quite similar: That a shift in technology or access to new technologies change (read: improve) how we teach. Unfortunately, there a plenty of examples that prove this isn’t the full equation, such as underused Learning Management Systems, laptops and fancy whiteboards. Still, these examples pale in comparison to what is required to create impactful, meaningful change. Change in itself is a spiral of enquiry, with each loop bringing further insight and improvement. To be responsible in our approach we must be evidence-based, flexible and put the long-term benefits for learners at the centre. Cloud tools and Software as a Service (SaaS) are both pieces of the puzzle, but they are not the end of the story.
