From the CEO Hi Everyone Welcome back to Term Four. By the time you read this update, it will be under ten weeks until Christmas. 2018 has flown by. With the end of the year looming we are busily prepping for the craziness of the Christmas break. It is in this coming holiday break that a huge number of our schools undertake changes to their networks. Our client management team have been working alongside our schools assisting with strategic planning and working with them on what needs to be completed. I cannot emphasise enough that now is the time to act to ensure such projects are signed off and ready to go. These days with cloud-based technologies, a lot of the preparation can be completed seamlessly during term time, so there will be minimal interruption over the break. This, however, cannot happen if things are left too late. Speaking of large ICT projects, New Era is very proud to have been chosen as the ICT integrator of choice by Avonside Girls High School and Shirley Boys High School for their upcoming co-location project. The schools will be moved to a state-of-the-art campus in early 2019, and we’re excited to work with both schools as they start an
exciting new chapter. This is a considerable exercise and after a lengthy RFP process, New Era IT was chosen for its experience and scale to deliver at a fixed price. Other news at hand is that we will be undergoing some changes ourselves. In the near future, New Era IT will change its name to New Era Technology. The name change is more befitting of what we offer our clients. These days it’s about solutions, outcomes and ongoing relationships. Education Technology is no longer just about IT. New Era continues to be the only dedicated education ICT service provider in New Zealand. We only work within the education sector and do not support any commercial clients. This ensures our priorities are solely focused on our client base – NZ’s education institutions! Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome the following schools to the New Era family. We are very proud to be associated with these schools and look forward to working alongside them as their trusted ICT partner: Palmerston North Girls, Manchester Street School Feilding, Howick College Auckland, Colwill School Auckland, Henderson High School Auckland, Matua Ngaru School Auckland, Whangaparaoa School Auckland, Lincoln Heights School Auckland, Te Ao Marama School Hamilton, Mangonui School Northland, Riverview School Northland, Oruaiti School Northland, Kaitaia Intermediate Northland, Shirley Boys High School, Chisnallwood Intermediate School, Karamea Area School and Kings High School Dunedin. Have a great Term Four. Cheers,
Above: National Sales Manager, Alan Reelick and Andrew Hood, South Island Regional Manager checking out the progress at the site of a new colocated Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School campus Right: Greg and Alan are met by a welcome party.

What’s New? Hi! We’re New Era Technology
Kiwi Schools get Chrome Education License The Ministry of Education and Google have announced that all Kiwi schools are eligible for the Chrome Education License. From November 1st, all state and state-integrated schools will be able to start claiming ministry-funded Chrome Education licenses to manage new and existing unmanaged Chromebooks. This is an exciting development for schools, meaning the fantastic Chrome Education License features can be rolled out to all school-owned, leased and BYOD Chrome devices without the additional cost traditionally associated with management licensing.
After over 22 years of supporting New Zealand schools with leading-edge technology solutions, we are excited to announce that New Era IT will change its name to New Era Technology later this year. New Era IT was initially founded in 1996 with a mission to provide trusted, qualified advice and technology that ‘just works’ for the New Zealand education sector. We set out to become recognised as New Zealand’s leaders in the delivery of next-generation solutions, with a vision to be the partner of choice for primary, secondary and tertiary education. It’s been quite a journey, one that has taken us from a small education IT provider to the largest integrated education solutions and services company in New Zealand. Our next chapter as New Era Technology reflects our commitment to supporting students, teachers and school communities to be innovative and confident with the tools they need to thrive in a fast-paced world.
Key Features of the Chrome Education License • •
We recognise that the digital tools supporting learning are no longer limited to ‘IT’. eLearning has blended with learning, and advances to the technology strand of the New Zealand Curriculum have continued to transform the classroom. As we have worked with schools adapting to support learning in all its forms, we’ve become familiar with the diverse range of technologies that are emerging. Our transition to New Era Technology reflects our commitment to being New Zealand’s leading education technology partners, whatever the future holds for learning. Like our schools, we’re excited about the power and possibilities of technology, the evolution of new tools, platforms and curriculum, and the potential of today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders. We’ll continue to offer our leading-edge cloud and managed ICT support services, alongside exciting new products as New Era Technology.
•
Allow, block or push apps and extensions for students and staff. Apply device settings, deploy Wi-Fi settings and customise the user experience. Keep track of all your devices, including serial number, status, recent users and location.
All current school owned, leased and BYOD devices are covered by the new agreement, including previously purchased devices that aren’t managed. How to claim your Chrome Education Licenses Whether you’re purchasing new Chrome devices, or wish to add the Chrome Education License to your current Chromebooks, we can assist you with the process of obtaining the new licenses.

In this article, I would like to talk about two familiar but very important concepts. Both are linked and equally critical in the decision making process for ICT in education.
F
irstly – yardsticks. There is little argument that as people we gather the sense of morality and behaviour from what we observe and experience. At different times in our lives, we use specific people and occasionally events as metaphorical “yardsticks” that we can measure our actions and choices against. The word comes from the yardstick itself, something that is used to measure to ensure accuracy. Some of you may ask yourself at times “what would so-and-so do?”. This is a type of yardstick that places value on the experience and judgment of an individual. Sometimes we bestow this honour on a group too, be it grandparents, iwi or an organised group. Education is no different in this regard. As teachers, administrators and leaders we gather the choices we make, particularly the hard ones, from the people and experiences we have gained. I would argue that because of the tight-knit group that is the education sector in New Zealand, we not only ask ourselves this theoretical question, we often ask it of the person directly. There aren’t any Principals or senior leaders that I know of who haven’t been faced with a new or challenging situation, requiring them to reach out and garner some support from others with perspective and experience. This is really, really, healthy. The most dangerous thing for any person who has significant influence over others through the choices that they make, be it a classroom or boardroom, is to become closed off and believe that they have all the answers. The other concept is that of the “Canary”, or the “Canary in a Cage”. Coal miners of old used to use these birds to signal presence of deadly gas as they essentially inhale twice and are therefore more susceptible. We all have canaries in cages in our lives. Quiet or not-so-quiet voices that let us know that something is not quite right, and maybe we should pause for reflection or run for our lives. Stepping back and qualifying the information is critical. The difficulty with this concerning ICT is that you really don’t know what you don’t know. Yardsticks and canaries, therefore, become critical. Rather than try and guess the yardsticks and canaries for you, let me share some of the ones that the team here at New Era have experienced.
Yardsticks The Connected Learning Advisory. This independent group will give you unbiased and qualified advice on the choices you are making Other Principals. Insight from trusted peers can be incredibly useful. The caveat on this one is that they are listening to their own “canaries” in their environment. Colleagues from other schools. These people will have no issue about telling you how things work at the school they went to or have come from. Change is always tricky, but colleagues can be an essential measure of how things can look from another perspective. New Era. I can say hand-on-heart that even for our nonclient schools we can give you a clear and honest opinion on your school’s ICT relative to best practice. It is in our favour to start the relationship with honesty and integrity.
Canaries Staff. Every staff group (I think) has the person who resists ICT. They will sing the moment things look like they are not working well. This person can be a complete headache as it may not be the system itself, (see user error), but should not be ignored concerning their silence. If they are happy, this is about as loud as a canary can sing. Students. Interestingly you must bother listening or listen carefully to hear this canary. They will get on with whatever most of the time. Student feedback is often overlooked regarding ICT. Their faith in the network and its ability to function effectively with everything from getting help to trying new technology will be a crucial indicator of its practicality, robustness and agility. Third parties. The number of integrations in a modern network is massive. Everything from alarms and phones to audio-visual technology often has some element that relies on network capacity and capability. If trusted and experienced third parties are having a nightmare getting anything done, this may sing to issues with the network. Flashing Lights, Appearing Bills and Digital Tunes. Outages, lights flashing, bills arriving with lots of words you don’t know the meaning of constant beeping where you think it really shouldn’t come from are all big red canaries. The longer these have been going on, the bigger they are. The Canaries will sound, but the response and time they’re left to sing is also a significant indicator of the robustness of your ICT network. Now is a great time to give New Era a call and get us to come and do a measure up with our perfectly crafted yardsticks and award-winning canaries. •

Creating a Connected Environment
St. Mary’s College St Mary’s College, overlooking St Mary’s Bay in Ponsonby, Auckland, has been successfully educating young women since being established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1850. With a roll of almost 1000, St Mary’s College has the goal of creating a connected environment in line with the school’s strategic plan. Microsoft Office 365 is an integral component of their vision to make the most of available resources that integrate technology into teaching and learning best practice. A considered approach “We have taken a considered approach to technology.” says Elena Grant, Deputy Principal at St Mary’s, “We have made incremental steps towards creating an inclusive environment where all students and teachers are able to take full advantage of the benefits. It has been a natural progression. It was important for us to set up a stable network for growth, then add capabilities like BYOD as they became viable. We then adopted Microsoft 365 as our preferred platform for instruction, collaboration and administration.” “We chose Microsoft on the strong recommendation of our technology partner, New Era IT,” continues Elena Grant. “This decision was made easier by the support Microsoft offered and the fact that Microsoft has a number of special programmes specifically developed to help schools like ours get the most out of the Microsoft learning environment.”
Tech Angels and the eLearning Lead Team A focus for St Mary’s College is ensuring that everyone has the support they need to successfully embrace the technology. “We have Tech Angels in each Form Class,” says Keith Paterson, Head of Faculty, Science, “so that there is always a student on-hand who can help other students with minor troubleshooting or with use of software during the lesson. Similarly, we have e-learning reps, one for each faculty, who are essentially the ‘Tech Angels’ for the staff. Microsoft Teams has been especially useful for both initiatives.” New Era IT’s on-site technician is also available for on-going support across the board.
Microsoft Team for Tech Angels “This year,” explains Mr Paterson, “we created a Microsoft Team for all our Tech Angels so that they could track their
progress towards earning a badge that recognises their skills. We gave them specific tasks including preparing a personal profile on the Team notebook, writing at least ten meaningful comments or questions through the year on the conversation tab and responding to a video. This was developed by the eLearning Lead Team, and shared via Microsoft Stream.” “The response to this has been much better than we anticipated,” Keith continues. “Students have been using the conversation tab very effectively and now we have a network of tech savvy students. When someone has a question in class about a tech issue students chip in very quickly and, I might add, often provide better responses than we teachers may have offered.” Keith is especially pleased by how easy it has been to get the students on board. “The incentive of a Tech Angel badge provided the initial reason for students to engage,” he notes, “but once they were up and running, the initiative took on a life of its own. And now they are genuinely enjoying it.”
Exploring beyond the walls “The thing I like about Microsoft 365 is that it allows students and teachers to explore beyond the walls of the classroom.” Keith continues, “It allows students from different year levels, at different times and in different spaces to interact with each other on projects with similar objectives and areas of focus. They can start to have ideas on how to use the technology for themselves in ways that best suit their situation.” “St Mary’s is bringing students and teachers to the point where they are open to learning about what is possible. Great tools like OneNote and Teams are being used in a million different ways for a million different purposes.”

Microsoft 365 and New Zealand’s eLearning Curriculum: A perfect fit Two key components of New Zealand’s eLearning Curriculum (2007) are to facilitate shared learning by enabling students to join or create communities of learners that extend well beyond the classroom and to assist in the creation of supportive learning environments by offering resources that take account of individual, cultural or developmental differences. St Mary’s College is using Microsoft 365 to meet those guidelines. “Technology has given us a platform to create a connected environment for students, teachers and staff,” says Elena. “We have built our network in a considered manner to ensure that everyone can participate at their own pace. Microsoft 365, with tools such as Teams, OneNote and SharePoint, fully supporting our vision. Technology will never replace a good teacher,” Elena concludes, “but technology is having a major impact indeed on the way good teachers deliver our curriculum.” •
“Our decision was made easier by the support Microsoft offered and the number of special programmes that have been specifically developed to help schools like ours get the most out of the Microsoft learning environment.” - Elena Grant, Deputy Principal

The Learning COrner AR, VR, MR. What’s the difference?
Augmented Reality (AR)
Virtual Reality (VR)
Mixed Reality (MR)
AR adds digital elements to a live view often by using the camera on a smartphone or headset. Augmented reality experiences have been around for a number of years and are becoming popular on mobile devices. Examples of augmented reality experiences include Snapchat lenses and Microsoft’s Hololens.
VR is a complete immersion experience that shuts out the physical world. Using VR devices such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Google Cardboard, users can be transported into a number of real-world and imagined environments such as a pengiun colony or the moon.
MR is a blend of Digital and Physical worlds. In a mixed reality (MR) experience, which combines elements of both AR and VR, real-world and digital objects interact. Mixed reality technology is just now starting to take off with Microsoft’s HoloLens one of the most notable early mixed reality apparatuses.

of today’s primary school students will work in jobs that don’t exist yet. “ (Cathy N. Davidson, Now You See It: How Technology and Brain Science will Transform Schools and Businesses for the 21st Century)
Integrating Mixed Reality into the Classroom Students who use AR and VR experiences today are likely to be those who create the technologies that transform our world tomorrow. Mixed reality is best integrated by following up high-tech encounters in the classroom with other activities that further encourage students to connect the training with its real world applications. Mixed reality technologies provide an excellent opportunity to both augment traditional lessons and create completely new experiences.
