Hopefully, you have had a good break and are fully recharged to take on 2019. By the time you read this, Term 1 will be well underway and the associated mayhem of the beginning of the year has started to settle (I hope).

The beginning of the year is the busiest time of our calendar year. All of our clients (almost 200,000 educators, students and support staff in total) return within one week of one another and our teams are very, very busy providing the support they need to get their year rolling. Beyond the day to day “business as usual” support we provide, (setting up new students and staff as an example) we complete many implementation projects over the break, migrating, rebuilding and updating our clients’ networks and hardware. This Christmas holiday break alone, our teams completed over 8000 hours of project work. We have assisted numerous schools with their ICT and cloud journey, and we continue to be there post-deployment to support ongoing ICT development for schools and their students.

Looking back at 2018, we had a successful year with over 50 new clients joining the New Era family. We have also grown our team by 12 staff nationally. We are very proud to employ graduates (including some alumni of your schools), and our continued growth provides us with the ability to give our team many opportunities to further develop their careers.

With technology now being so integrated and incredibly important to the running of a school, it is critical that schools understand that no one person can ever have enough knowledge to support the myriad of technologies they now utilise. Because of this, when a school becomes a New Era client they are not just provided with a technician. By 2020, all schools need to have a strong handle on the Digital Technologies area of the New Zealand Curriculum. We’ve outlined 4 considerations that will help in your 2019 journey.

fter a consultation and review process throughout 2017, the Technology Curriculum area of the New Zealand Curriculum has been revised to include two Digital Technologies areas. These are direct learning areas designed to foster the acquisition of real-life digital skills that students will need when entering the workforce post-school.

3. Evaluate your technology landscape

The new curriculum content has been available for implementation since the beginning of the 2018 school year, however, by 2020, all schools are expected to address these curriculum areas. With several distinct requirements, this article will cover what New Era sees as four pivotal considerations for 2020 Digital Technologies preparedness.

Although the new curriculum content doesn’t necessarily mean students will be constantly learning through digital devices, they will be a necessity. As such, there are two questions you need address:

1. Understand the changes to the curriculum

The first port of call is to evaluate what’s new. The original three strands of the Technology Learning Area have been reformulated and embedded across five new areas.

Computational Thinking for Digital Technologies Designing and Developing Digital Outcomes Designing and Developing Materials Outcomes Designing and Developing Processed Outcomes Design and Visual Communication

What hardware (laptops, tablets, desktops) and software do you already have that will allow students to obtain the desired outcomes?

What hardware and software do you need to make available in order for your students to be able to achieve the desired learning outcomes?

As a brief example, your students will require devices and software that foster collaboration, have the ability to enhance programming knowledge and also develop coding ability. These tools will also need to have the right processing power and specs to visually represent ideas and concepts in 3D, and students may need the power necessary to work with augmented and mixed reality as well.

The Digital Technologies facets fall into areas 1 and 2, Computational Thinking for Digital Technologies and Designing and Developing Digital Outcomes. Within these two facets, learning outcomes will be based around the intertwining of six themes; algorithms, data representation, digital applications, digital devices and infrastructure, humans and computers, and programming. Schools need to evaluate and develop a strong understanding of these new areas before any further initiatives can be undertaken.

Teacher readiness is one of the biggest challenges when implementing new curriculum. Consideration must be given to teacher confidence, knowledge and capability.

Every school needs to answer the following questions:

What timeframes are you working towards?

How will you create and use the right learning tools?

How will the new curriculum integrate with your school’s established systems?

What professional learning do your teachers require?

Consider all the areas you need to assess and orchestrate an actionable roadmap for each component. Utilising a strong project management tool like Trello can be a strong tool that fosters on-time implementation. When designing your roadmap there are several steps you should take: •

Evaluate your budget. This will in turn dictate what’s possible and not possible.

Evaluate your current state and identify your target operating state.

Identify each individual component and set realistic deadlines for completion. To avoid bottlenecks it’s wise to stagger these in stages.

Identify all necessary stakeholders (BOT, parents, heads of faculty, teachers and students) and outline necessary requirements to all.

Hold regular meetings to follow up on tasks and track your progress.

Full S.T.E.A.M Ahead When today’s students reach the workforce, their career success will depend as much on their thought processes as their knowledge, but how do we prepare them for a future unknown?

T

o say the lives of children have changed would be an understatement. Where a generation ago, kids were obsessing over Transformers, with a lucky few going ‘high tech’ with a home Atari system, today’s digital natives are an entirely new breed. For those charged with raising and educating this new generation, the challenge is to marry traditional curriculum demands with the computational thinking that will enable youngsters to thrive.

By the time today’s students reach the workforce, their career success will depend as much on their thought processes as their knowledge. Little wonder then, that teachers and school leaders are focused on how to equip them with an unpredictable future.

New guidelines, in the form of a recently updated New Zealand curriculum, offers some signposts for educators. The aim is not only to give key skills in operating technology, but to encourage and develop computational thinking. Changes are due to be adopted by all schools by 2020. But what do the updates mean, and how do schools integrate more into an already crowded curriculum?

Computational Thinking: a Changed New Zealand Curriculum Put simply, computational thinking involves viewing a challenge or problem in a way that drawing on technology can help us to overcome. In two steps, students first identify the steps needed to solve a problem and then put technology to work to reach a solution. They learn what is possible using technology, developing an appreciation for the possibilities and fast-changing limitations.

Computational thinking is not just employed in technology-driven subjects. IT knowledge becomes a part of students’ approach to problems in science, the arts and maths. They will learn core programming concepts, understand how data is created and stored, and develop critical thinking skills that enable them to make informed choices in the digital world.

That is not to say that more traditional methods are abandoned. Children will still learn times-tables, write narrative texts and sweat over chemistry tests. But they may also use newfound coding skills to develop a times tables app, create a multimedia representation of the text they crafted, and manipulate data from a variety of sources to predict the way different elements react.

From Curriculum to Classroom Implementing new directives can, with the right support, be a boon for traditional subjects, allowing for content designed to engage students raised in the online generation. It makes sense that youngsters able to click before they could read would respond to delivery of maths, science and history using progressive methods.

Those methods can also be more readily varied, giving teachers more bandwidth to address different learning styles and abilities within a class.

It isn’t just students who are increasingly gaining computational thinking skills.

When staff access the right technology and support, the classroom experience is transformed.

The world becomes a place to explore more freely, in more ways, with greater opportunity to collaborate. That might mean a chat session with a scientist in the Antarctic or examining museum exhibits in 3D, hosted by a curator in London.

You will likely have noticed that some of the more forward-thinking tech companies are talking less about technology and more about what can be achieved in the classroom and beyond. While Microsoft helps educators and students to navigate a seamless transition between classroom, home, and field trip, pairing their software with a new breed of devices from the likes of HP means students are no longer restricted by a technology millstone. Today’s laptops, tablets and smartphones are light and tough, with a battery life that lasts all day and connectivity to interact with an expanding world.

Tech-savvy teachers, meanwhile, are finding a wealth of ways to improve learning experiences. They are quick to enlist technology to bring learning to life and fuel the imagination of their students. By approaching traditional challenges armed with a new toolbox of teaching methods, they are sharing the journey with a new generation set to change the world.

AR adds digital elements to a live view often by using the camera on a smartphone or headset. Augmented reality experiences have been around for a number of years and are becoming popular on mobile devices.

Examples of augmented reality experiences include Snapchat lenses and Microsoft’s Hololens.

VR is a complete immersion experience that shuts out the physical world. Using VR devices such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Google Cardboard, users can be transported into a number of real-world and imagined environments such as a pengiun colony or the moon.

MR is a blend of Digital and Physical worlds.

In a mixed reality (MR) experience, which combines elements of both AR and VR, real-world and digital objects interact. Mixed reality technology is just now starting to take off with Microsoft’s HoloLens one of the most notable early mixed reality apparatuses.

T

echnology is now so intertwined with students and their learning outcomes that today’s students would view a classroom from the past and simply gawk at the learning structure, activities and their outcomes.

While the educational realm has typically taken longer to adopt new technologies than the business world or corporate sector, thanks to the organic and ever-fluid landscape of technological advancements, full-scale adoption has become somewhat inevitable. This is reflected no better than in the new Digital Technologies component of the New Zealand Curriculum which must be implemented in every school by the beginning of the 2020 school year.

“Methodologies are changing, curricula are changing, and new technologies are being tested.” 1 Virtual reality (VR) is still very much an emerging technology, but we thought this would be a great opportunity to explore five ways VR can potentially reinvent the classroom.

1. “Real” Experiences Traditionally, in many circumstances, education fails to provide students with hands-on experiences. For example, they can read about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that decimated the ancient city of Pompeii, but they can’t legitimately experience the terror or grief of the event.

Students can watch footage of marine life on the Great Barrier Reef, or documentaries detailing the origins of the universe.

But what if you could showcase to your students the movement and smaller idiosyncrasies of both the marine life and expansive, contextualisation of space? As VR grows, teachers will be able to bring past worlds, and previously before unexplored realms to the classroom, providing students with a deeper level of understanding when it comes to history and the wider world around them.

2. Empathy The world can be a volatile place and with the 24/7 news cycle brought on by social media, students have access to world affairs at their fingertips. Imagine being able to virtually show them via a nanoscale immersion, the after effects of the Haiti earthquake, or the stressful reality of Syrian refugees seeking asylum in Mediterranean Europe.

The ability to put students in these kinds of situations would foster growth in their ability to empathise. Being able to empathise with people from other situations unbeknown to their own will foster deeper and more informed perspectives about the world they live in, putting them in good stead to grow into wise, digital citizens in a connected world.

3. Insight & Creativity In the past, the most creative a student could be was via the visual arts, wood work or creative writing. VR will give students the opportunity to bring their imagination to life.

Activities both individually and in groups will give students the ability to draft, design and create 3 dimensional objects, scenarios and worlds of their choosing.

Allowing students to share their world with their classmates, as well as developing fundamental coding/robotics and design skills will do wonders for their confidence and employability post-school. Not to mention, engaging even the most disruptive or absent-minded students could be an issue of the past.

4. Relevance for Traditional Activities VR can add more relevance to what would be considered more traditional learning activities. Anatomy for example, not every student learns the same way. For students more inclined to engage visually than by text, imagine being able to delve inside the human body and have them interact with muscular systems, bones and organs.

It can add further weight to any learning experience, perhaps a class is set an essay on Vincent Van Gogh and his life, through books they know of his blind passion for the lover that drove him to cut off his ear, but being able to virtually experience that passion would facilitate a more informed and in-depth finished product.

5. Professional Life From a young age we dream and have fantasies about what we want to be when we grow up. VR can play a role in broadening students’ exposure to potential careers. Through VR students can experience a day in the life of an engineer, experiencing which skills are required to perform the role and what they would potentially enjoy about the job, and vice versa for what they might not.

The ability to give students regular exposure to a multitude of careers will hold them in good stead for when they graduate, and decide which path they wish to take in their professional lives.

With the benefit of trial and error in school, more students will be entering the workforce fully aware of what they’re getting into, which will in turn foster higher rates of employment, and potentially a happier and more productive society.
