From the CEO Greg Strachan Chief Executive Officer
Welcome back to Term 3. I hope that you had time in the holidays to have a break, enabling you to return to school refreshed and ready to go for the second half of 2019.
New Era Technology acquiring Asnet Technologies (www.asnettechnologies.co.nz). As many of you may remember, Asnet run the MoE School VC Bridge, and were integral to the delivery of Schoolzone
We have had a very busy Term 2 with conference season in full swing. You may have seen our teams at the Association of Boys’ Schools Conference, Secondary Principals Association of NZ (SPANZ) Conference, Interface Conference and the School Business Managers’ (SBM) Conference. We love supporting these organisations and their respective conferences. It is a great way for us to give back to the education sector, while being a fantastic opportunity for us to catch up with clients and get their feedback directly. Also we always appreciate meeting non-clients who are looking for quality ICT Support options.
video conference solution to hundreds of the schools nationwide. Asnet are a great fit as they deliver high quality VC, AV and Security solutions, which you will soon see being brought to market by New Era.
In other news, New Era was immensely proud to have been the chosen ICT integrator to assist Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’ High School move to their new co-located campuses. It was a massive project to move these two large secondary schools and deploy a new network with state of the art technologies. The two colleges are probably the best resourced schools in Christchurch. The design and deployment of their ICT network has been delivered on time without issue. New Era is proud to support their ongoing ICT needs.
Lastly, I would like to qualify why New Era Technology’s service is head and shoulders above others. At New Era we firmly believe in sticking to our knitting. We are a people business, and our bread and butter is providing the best people we can to support the ICT needs of schools. Our teams support school staff and students, as well as maintaining ICT infrastructure. We have a full “wrap around” service- we don’t just provide a tech on the ground and leave you to it. We believe in a high touch model; Beyond an onsite technician, we also provide a technical team leader to mentor and ensure the technician is up to date and on task and also provide a second layer of support via our service desk team. For complex technical deployments or issues we have a nationwide team of very experienced high-level engineers available to all our clients. Lastly and very importantly, we provide a Client Manager who speaks plain English and not geek-speak, to ensure ICT direction and strategy is developed and maintained. Many companies offer ICT services, however we believe good people and communication are the key... All the best for Term 3. Cheers, Greg

What’s Hot? Manurewa High School’s Success
New Era Technology would like to congratulate this team of four students from Manurewa High School who have been placed in the top five in the world at the International Mathematics Modeling Competition. The four students will be going to Hong Kong, where they will be presenting at an International Mathematics Conference. New Era Technology has gifted them each with a Microsoft Surface tablet and some other goodies to support them in their future endeavours.
Our aim is to showcase to school leaders and IT Support Staff how easy it can be to set up and manage Windows 10 devices using Intune for Education, and to introduce schools to the current range of cost-effective Windows 10 devices with Digital Inking capabilities and to demonstrate key applications for Education e.g. MS Teams for Edu, OneNote, Paint3D, Minecraft: Education Edition. Riverhills School, Riverina School, Pakuranga Heights School and Diocesan School were among a long list of Schools that we did Trial in a Box for. They were excited to receive a couple of free laptops for allowing us to demo Windows10.
Western Springs Redevelopment
Trial in a Box
In 2016, an $80m redevelopment project was started for Western Springs College, the largest single investment for a school in New Zealand. This is NZ’s largest ever public school rebuild which will feature a three-storey main teaching building connected via skybridge to a gymnasium, a two-story teaching block for the Maori immersion unit, and a performing arts space. The project is replacing 80% of the college’s existing buildings and is going to offer 64 new teaching spaces, and upgrading 17 existing spaces, bringing the school to a total of 81. Overall this will increase the teaching space capacity by about 25%.
We first ran Trial in a Box mid May 2018 and it had significant impact on schools that experienced it, with many more excited to try it. Since then, we have been visiting schools demonstrating how easy it is to manage Windows 10 devices using AzureAD and Intune for Education.

New Era was approached by the school to provide our expert advice, and we have been working closely with the school both to transition to the new building, and to provide a next generation technology experience for the students. Our involvement has ranged from designing how a staff member will use their laptop in the teaching space, to working with architects to decide where data outlets should be located throughout the building. We have engaged a number of our partners to bring this vision to fruition. We have been working with Downer and their subcontractors to meet their deadlines to bring the school online. The school has had to move 80% of their existing ICT infrastructure to the new build, which means we had to remove all old equipment from buildings to be demolished and re-integrate any re-usable gear to save costs. This, combined with state-of-the-art AV installations via Edwards Sound, new projectors, wireless access points and switching has provided some technical and logistical challenges that we have has to overcome.

Client Story
Embracing Digital Technology
S
tudents, teachers and the greater Fielding community are working together to ensure that today’s Manchester Street School (MSS) students will be tomorrow’s digital innovators, entrepreneurs and practitioners. In what is becoming an autumn tradition, the Odderbots MSS robotics team has just returned from the VEX global robotics competition in America with yet another award. “The Odderbots drove their robot with precision, exemplified team spirit and enthusiasm and succinctly explained their robot design to the judges,” says Geoffrey Ward, the Year 5 and 6 teacher at MSS who accompanied the team to the competition. “As a result, the team was presented with the prestigious Judges Award that recognises exemplary effort and perseverance at the event. A single win like this is noteworthy…to bring home the hardware for three years running is unprecedented.” Yet for MSS, it is business as usual. “We are fully embracing digital technology in all its forms,” says MSS Principal Glen Richardson. “For teaching, for administration and, most importantly, for inspiration to students. We see digital technology, especially the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) curricula, as the pathway to inclusiveness, empowerment and leadership.” New Era Technology congratulates MSS for their achievements. “MSS has been with New Era Technology since September 2018,” says Richard Hall, New Era’s Regional Manager in Palmerston North. “We work with schools up and down New Zealand, and MSS clearly stands out as an example of what young people can do when given the right opportunities. In fact, New Era has donated two ACER Switch Tablet PCs and an XYZ 3D printer to the school so that they can have a dedicated resource as they prepare for their 2020 VEX title defence.”

“We are fully embracing digital technology in all its forms”– GEOFFREY WARD, TEACHER, MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL
With a focus on digital technologies, MSS requires infrastructure and a network that is secure, fast and robust. “New Era Technology has been a tremendous asset as we continue our digital transformation,” explains Mr Richardson. “Our strategic plan was to move more of our digital resources into the cloud. This would give us more flexibility and scalability as our requirements evolve, whilst removing many of the operational overheads that were taking up too much of our time.” “In the months since September,” he continues, “our increased reliance on cloud-based technology has seen a quantum leap in responsiveness in an extremely cost-effective manner. As a result, we have been able to re-allocate funds from an infrastructure upgrade to vastly improving the device / student ratios as well as trialling a BYOD programme in our Year 4-5 cohort.” Having a responsive network is essential for robotics…not to mention communications, pedagogy and administration. “Nobody likes to wait for the screen to refresh,“ says Mr Ward, “especially high-energy students who are spending their lunch break testing designs for competitions. We’ve seen a significant increase in network speeds and storage space is no longer an issue so students can get on with the tasks at hand.” Today’s students are tech savvy and quick to pick up new opportunities. “There are virtually no limits,” says Mr Ward. “We see STEM education as a passport to future success that is inclusive, non-judgemental and inspirational. What’s really amazing is that our robotics team composition turns over every year so we can include a whole new set of students into the mix. And it’s not just for the boys. Girls make up about half of the team at any given time. Plus we get Year 3 students showing interest in joining as places open up. With the reward of a trip to America on the offing, we are having no problem whatsoever in building momentum as we move forward.” “The result is that we’ve invested a lot of money providing a worldclass site for students to access the New Zealand curriculum, and increase their chances of success when they leave secondary school.”

Insights: Leading the Change in the Digital Curriculum By Tony Gilbert

Leading the change in the digital curriculum
T
here has been a lot of talk about what the digital curriculum will mean for teachers and their day-to-day practice with the implementation of digital technology into the curriculum. The Minister of Education has provided funding to support this implementation so that the permeation is meaningful and widespread. There is no doubt that teachers are leaders in each of their own settings and will be examining the needs of their students in their particular context, based upon their prior learning and skills that they have.
But what does this mean for school leaders and specifically those leading ICT in New Zealand schools? Any person who has been involved in a successful event or activity knows the planning that goes into it. Things seem to run like clockwork and almost all eventualities and contingencies have been explored. It should come as no surprise then, that this is also the case when it comes to integrating digital technology into everyday classroom learning. The following are some reflections on implementation and implications for leaders with the new digital curriculum.
It really is part of the curriculum now. The correlation between direction and course is critical in our understanding of the gravity of the word curriculum. It is our guiding course for New Zealand education. All assessment, fads and fabulous theories aside, curriculum is what really counts. Now that there is a direct recognition of the digital curriculum as core to students learning journeys, it holds so much more weight. Apart from the obvious statutory requirements, it recognises the context teachers, students and society are in and places this at the forefront of what and how we teach. Simply put, there is no ignoring it.
The Magpie Syndrome Apart from reality TV and online shopping, there are probably few domains that offer as many new and “shiny” objects as technology; and the promises are spectacular. Think of the latest phone or tablet or app that will “completely transform your life” or “how you work”. The marketing machines are impressive, and although these...evaluated in the context within which it will eventually be applied. It may look great, but will it actually help for your specific situation. I’ll give you some examples – Smart-boards, 3D printers, robotics, VR, AR… the list goes on. All these innovations in their own way are impressive technologies, but they all have instances of success and failure in schools. Failure is a healthy thing at times, but when leading a school, these failures can be expensive and have a negative effect on the future adoption of IT change (cue the staff groans of “here we are, doing something new again”). Therefore, take a lesson from the behaviour of the magpie and watch for the fixation upon the latest shiny object – particularly from those that you know love shiny objects. The best way to do this is to have a clear structure in place to evaluate the relevance and impact of technology within your school.
A mechanism of justification and review As a leader, inevitability you need to make a “call” on things sometimes. In fact we do this in life, and hopefully the older (and wiser?) we get we feel more confident and make less mistakes. However, I believe in what I have coined the “high-stakes/high-stakeholder” model. This dictates that the more people that could potentially be affected by the decision and the greater the impact change could make, the more time should be spent consulting. In terms of the digital curriculum, the procurement or systemic change to technology devices, systems and network operation may have primary or secondary effects on the most important element – users. A simple request, for example, for some new computers in a department to deliver and assess the curriculum should have a tangible outcome linked and an evaluation cycle in place.
“The procurement or systemic change to technology devices, systems and network operation may have primary or secondary effects on the most important thing – users” I would suggest this is done at a middle manager type level. This allows for a level of transparency between stakeholders, and should allow things to be focused on outcomes for teaching and learning. Ideally there would also be some solid pedagogy to back up these decisions, but as the rise of digital technology and curriculum has grown so rapidly, this can be a tough one to navigate.
Do some back exercises All the best theory, systems and practice goes out the window if your network is stuffed when it counts. I chose my words carefully there, as IT networks can happily plod along most of the time, but when the pressure goes on, when it is really required (see new BYOD programmes, online assessment, cyber-attacks…), they demonstrate their true robustness. It is IT – things will happen – but ask yourself – how often and what happens when it does? It is the digital equivalent of visiting the doctor when you are well and having solid insurance. Do the back exercises to get prepared for when and if you need to suddenly support your friend’s indoor netball team on a Wednesday night. Or better yet – get someone else to do it. It is no secret that I went from being a Deputy Principal to working at New Era several years after my school had shifted to their support. Many of the team are still my good friends, but now I get to say whatever I like having moved to running my own thing. Although I was a little bit of geek, I was not paid to be a geek – I was paid to be an educator and that is where my skill set was. New Era support was my form of back exercises. With the rise of the digital curriculum I challenge you to stay focused on supporting your teachers to stay focused. Not an easy ask, but with great planning comes great success. Nga mihi mahana
Tony

TotalCloud. Voice. Pricing regulations around New Zealand’s copper telephone network are being relaxed in 2020 due to the near-ubiquitous presence of Ultra-Fast Fibre that can deliver these voice services at a fraction of the cost. This means that replacing your old copper-based phone system is a matter of when, not if. Moving to a cloud-based telecommunications solution means saying goodbye to those old copper lines and expensive hardware, and saying hello to a future-proof, scalable and feature-rich system that allows you to focus on teaching and learning. The key benefits to your school are: Savings on line rental and calling rates Easy integration with other modern systems such as emergency lockdown and paging systems No more costly PABX hardware to purchase and maintain INTERNET CONNECTION
