From the CEO By the time you receive this message it will be less than 10 weeks until Christmas; 2019 has flown by.

Greg Strachan Chief Executive Officer

At New Era we are always trying to find ways to give our clients as much value as possible. Many of our clients are now utilising our “Ultra” agreements and these are proving to be very popular. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a fixed price option? That’s exactly what Ultra agreements deliver. Over the years we have learnt exactly what schools need and we have been first to market offering our clients true fixed-price ICT. Rather than having a management and maintenance agreement then having additional costs for project work, we have wrapped it all up in one agreement at a fixed price. So if you needed to deploy 300 new computers in your school and you are on an Ultra agreement it is all coveredNO EXTRA COST. If you need to move everything to the cloud, it is all coveredNO EXTRA COST. If you wanted to roll over all of your Tela Laptops it is all covered- NO EXTRA COST, Ultra has assisted schools and their boards hugely, reducing overall stress around budgeting and project delivery. With end of year not far away we are prepping for the craziness of the Christmas break. We complete a huge amount of change for schools before, during and after the Christmas break.

One thing I can’t emphasise enough is that if you are planning significant projects around your school’s ICT, then act now and get things in place. Many of the international vendors of computer hardware run stock levels very low around December and January, and in the past we have had clients wait until the last week of term before making the decision to procure hardware. This in turn has greatly impacted on delivery times and in the worst-case scenarios computer hardware not arriving to schools until February. This can be very stressful for all concerned. Lastly, New Era continues to strive to be the very best in what we do and what we deliver to schools in New Zealand. We firmly believe as a business we are only as good as our people. We believe in developing, training and promoting from within our teams. In the last term we initiated an ICT internship programme where we work with client schools and training institutions to provide young people real-world work experience. We feel very proud to be able to support our communities, and assist young people into their ICT careers. Have a great Term 4!! Cheers

Greg Strachan

Great things happening around STEAM and Flipbots at Kadimah School. Kadimah has been a STEAM-based school for the last 3 years. This concept is fully integrated throughout their daily programmes. This year Kadimah has been invited to compete in the Oneworld Robotics Competition in November run by Actura. This is the first year that the competition has been run. It is aimed at children aged from Year 8 to Year 10. All the problems that the children need to solve are STEAM based and focus on future problems that the world will face. This is not for individual children but there is a strong focus on team collaboration to solve the problems.

New Era Ski Trip Towards the end of September New Era took its annual Ski Trip, we had our biggest turn out yet with nearly 100 of our staff attending. We had a great time bonding with one another and getting acquainted with the staff from different regions. We had an eventful weekend of skiing, quad biking, clay shooting, as well as a quiz night followed by watching the ABs thrash South Africa at the Rugby World Cup.

T

he New Era team is very proud of the many support partnerships that we enjoy with Te Tai Tokerau (Northland) schools. That is particularly so of the Pewhairangi (Bay of Islands) district in general, and the town of Kaikohe and surrounds in particular.

When New Era expanded its operation to include Kaikohe kura, you could say it was love at first sight! Over the last five years, Kaikohe schools to partner with New Era for ICT support have included: • • • • •

Northland College Kaikohe Intermediate Kaikohe Christian School Kaikohe East Schools Kaikohe West School

New Era also supports schools in the Kaikohe hinterland including:

Kaikohe Kura Embrace NZ’s Digital Curriculum Kaikohe is a low decile rohe, which does not always get good press due largely to lack of funding from successive governments. The advancement of the community has not been helped by an inability for government and Ngapuhi hapu to reach a treaty settlement. Notwithstanding the many challenges faced by the wider Kaikohe community, the district is blessed with truly amazing schools and awesome teachers providing inspirational learning environments for tamariki. New Era’s close association with schools in the region has given us a privileged position from which to witness truly progressive learning outcomes.

Manaiakalani Outreach Programme 1:1 Digital Immersion Learning, (where every student has available an appropriate personal device) is a pipe-dream for most schools and usually only occurs in high decile communities. However, with New Era providing technical support and with the Manaiakalani Trust providing funding assistance, professional development and structure, many Kaikohe schools are leading the way with adopting the new Ministry of Education digital curriculum that was recently published. Jane Lindsay, Principal of Paihia School (and formerly

Tautoro School), and lead Principal of the Kaikohekohe Education Trust, articulated the many positive outcomes for Pewhairangi schools embracing Manaiakalani at a New Era “Heads Up” seminar held in Kerikeri recently. Other speakers at the seminar included Jason Tane, Principal of Moerewa School, and Mike Clent, DP of Kerikeri High who spoke on behalf of an enthusiastic group of Peiwhairangi teachers who meet monthly to explore and share their successes around the Digital Curriculum. Panui!

Tautoro Primary School is a school that is a few kilometres south of Kaikohe, on the western highway to Dargaville, and is a kura that practices what it preaches! The Tautoro School fortnightly newsletter “Panui” is an outstanding example of quality community communication and is often shown by New Era staff to big city schools as a model for awesome publishing of student activity as well as demonstrating an extremely positive and active school culture. Tautoro teams have also entered (and been placed!) in a number of Robotics Challenges against other kura around the Motu. Well done to Tracey Simeon and her team at Tautoro!

knows the enormous benefits of educational experiences in the wider world and, with her staff arranged a trip for her junior classes to Kelly Tarlton’s iconic Aquarium on Auckland’s Tamaki Drive. As part of the planning, Chicky and her team were naturally concerned about safety and personal identity elements of the organization. New Era was able to help out with a very professional looking lanyard and name tag for each student on the trip. Personal safety issues were thus addressed, and the tamariki looked very smart as well!

Life Education Trust - Far North Mandy MacCarthy Morrogh is the Life Education Trust Far North Educator, and is based at Ohaeawai School just east of Kaikohe where she is supported by the Principal Michelle Edwards and her team including Raewyn Ritchie and the Chairperson of the Far North Trust, Diane Henderson. The Life Education Trust – Far North fulfills a very important role in an environment tight on funds. To assist Mandy in her critical role, New Era was approached by the Senior Leadership Team at Ohaeawai School to provide a portable device to make life in the Life Education Trust mobile van more effective. We are very pleased to say that with the assistance of New Era’s business partner Acer we have been able to provide a brand-new Acer laptop with plenty of “grunt” to help in Mandy’s work!

Life Education is a charity that educates and empowers children to make healthy choices so they can live full and healthy lives. Every year they teach over 250,000 children about their body, friendships, their identity, food and nutrition and helpful and harmful substances. The Trustees and Educator of the Far North would like to say a huge thank you to New Era IT. “New Era have kindly provided our educator with a brand new laptop for free. This has been a great saving to the Trust and come at a time when the old computer was about to die.” – Life Education Trust website.

eSports – Building Excitement for STEM Careers

T

he Rugby World Cup isn’t the only competition capturing the attention of students throughout New Zealand. The Fortnite World Cup Duo Championships, a global eSports tournament held last month in New York, drew 50 international teams, was watched by some 2.5 million streaming viewers worldwide and featured a US$30 million prize pool. Two young Kiwis brought home US$50k each. eSports and STEM eSports is one of the fastest growing online activities on the planet. More than just gaming, eSports enhances student skills within the STEM curricula: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In addition to technical skills, eSports is helping build soft skills such as cooperation, sportsmanship, social associations and strategic thinking whilst breaking down gender and age-based barriers.

eSport participants are drawn to STEM. Nearly two-thirds of the collegiate players in the leading eSports competition in America, hosted by Riot Games, are STEM majors. STEM and eSports go hand-in-hand. eSports: Pathway to STEM careers Students involved in eSports are developing skills across many aspects of technology from networking to computing to cybersecurity. This is amplified when teachers incorporate eSports and gaming into their curriculum. With eSports, students who might not have access to sophisticated technology now have the opportunity to learn, compete and collaborate on highperformance computers and gaming platforms. eSports is quickly gaining acceptance as a pathway for careers in STEMrelated fields.

eSports in New Zealand

Conclusion

The High School League (HSL) is a 10-week eSports tournament in which 50 high school teams from around New Zealand compete against each other. Teams that make it through to the finals are flown to Auckland to face off in the Grand Final, streamed live across the country. Playing in a team competing in the HSL, students are developing their communication, teamwork and strategic thinking skills while bonding with peers and forming long-term friendships.

With more than a million participants in New Zealand and more than 300 million eSport enthusiasts worldwide, eSports is emerging as a key enabler of STEM proficiencies as well as a career path in-and-of itself.

The University of Waikato now offers an eSports scholarship as part of its wider plans to be an eSports industry leader. In August the University opened the OMEN eSports Arena, New Zealand’s first dedicated eSports facility boasting 14 high-tech gaming computers, gaming chairs and a massive TV for streaming and console gaming. The Arena will be used for training, competitions and socialising.

And there are impressive cash prizes. US$50,000 and a trip to New York City are powerful incentives to study hard in STEM subjects, prepare for a future-proofed tech career and have fun along the way.

eSports empowers students to understand the tech world, collaborate with peers around the globe and enhance their self-esteem, confidence and social acceptance.

TotalCloud. Voice. Pricing regulations around New Zealand’s copper telephone network are being relaxed in 2020 due to the near-ubiquitous presence of Ultra-Fast Fibre that can deliver these voice services at a fraction of the cost. This means that replacing your old copper-based phone system is a matter of when, not if. Moving to a cloud-based telecommunications solution means saying goodbye to those old copper lines and expensive hardware, and saying hello to a future-proof, scalable and feature-rich system that allows you to focus on teaching and learning. The key benefits to your school are: Savings on line rental and calling rates Easy integration with other modern systems such as emergency lockdown and paging systems No more costly PABX hardware to purchase and maintain INTERNET CONNECTION
