The New Era Story
From the CEO
Across education, from students and teachers to ICT managers, New Era empowers educational organisations to bring the digital education revolution to life. Back in 1996, we set out to become recognised as New Zealand’s leader in the delivery of next-generation education solutions. Our vision was to be the partner of choice for primary, secondary & tertiary education providers as well as the Ministry of Education working to enhance student achievement and promote new models of learning.
Hi Everyone
It’s been quite a journey, one that has taken us from a small education services provider to the largest integrated education solutions and services company in NZ. Following our merger in 2011 with Editure, New Era Technology now spans New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States and brings unparalleled global and local understanding of educational ICT solutions to our customers.
Welcome back to the strangest most surreal Term 2 ever. I hope you and your families are keeping safe and well. As I type this its just been announced we will be out of Level 4 Lockdown on the 27/4/2020 and I have to say I am looking forward to that day! Greg Strachan Chief Executive Officer
Today more than two million educators, students and parents globally trust New Era Technology’s ICT and professional development solutions to enhance and achieve their education experiences and goals. With more than 160 employees in NZ and over 400 globally, it is New Era’s knowledge and understanding of the education environment along with its vast experience in state-of-the-art, high quality ICT solutions that allows New Era Technology to stand out from the competition.
As New Era was deemed an essential business we have been busy in the past weeks providing lots of remote support as well as some emergency onsite school visits when required. Our Service desk stats have been impressive with over 1200 calls a week and 120 individual technicians taking calls on mobiles as well.
Like our customers we’re excited about the power and possibilities of technology, the evolution of new devices, platforms and curriculum, and the potential of today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders.
In these times we know that reliable ICT function for schools is absolutely critical and as such we have ensured best practice around change management at these difficult times. This has ensured maximum reliability for schools and their networks. Impressively schools have been mostly able to migrate to online learning models and having moved to the cloud has never been so important. We have clients whom use G-Suite and Office 365 extensively and had great success on both platforms.
Our Values: Amazingness We make a real difference for our customers. We’re passionate about technology, innovation and creativity. Enjoyment We enjoy working in a supportive team environment. We like to have fun and value strong relationships.
Moving forward it appears with lifting of Level 4 we envisage we will be back on the ground working alongside our clients by next week
Kindness We care for each other and for the environment. We are open and inclusive in what we do as a company.
Lastly, I would like to say take care and be kind, we look forward to continue to support you all (face to face) in the very near future
Truthfulness We take ownership of our actions, are transparent in our dealings and we do what we say we’ll do. Appreciation We understand our clients’ needs, treat each other fairly, recognise achievement and celebrate success.
Cheers,
Greg Strachan
Our Partners Our partners are, without exception, leaders in their fields and work closely with us to ensure our clients are provided with consistently excellent outcomes.

Put your school’s older PCs and Macs back to work. CloudReady turns aging laptops and desktops into fast, secure Chrome devices that you can manage alongside Chromebooks in the Google Admin console Built from the same technology foundation as Chromebooks and Chrome OS, CloudReady is the only way to give new life to your existing PCs and Macs while reaping all the management benefits of the Google Admin console.
Pair your devices with MOE Funded Chrome Education Pairing your CloudReady devices with the MOE Funded Chrome Education Upgrade licenses enables full administrator control and easy, secure device management via Google’s cloud-based Admin console: •

Apply policies across all your devices at the touch of a button—like automatically applying wifi settings across all devices. Customize device settings so you can enable and disable specific apps, such as social media sites, according to grade or year groups to map to school policies. Quickly establish an exam mode to lock down devices to specific sites or apps.
CloudReady Over time, even the best hardware slows down. CloudReady changes that, replacing aging operating systems and heavy local apps with a fast, lightweight OS that won’t ever slow down. In the classroom, that means computers with faster boot times (so class can start on time), increased browsing speed (so teachers can get back to teaching and students can get back to learning), and greater reliability, with minimal disruption.

Client Story:
Pukekohe High School standardises network operations with Microsoft Pukekohe High School (PHS), with a roll of more than 1750 students and a staff of 200, is a coeducational secondary school catering for students in Years 9 to 15. At the beginning of 2019 it joined the ranks of the growing number of schools in New Zealand that are benefiting from the features and functionality of Microsoft 365 (including Azure Active Directory and the Enterprise Mobility Security suite), along with Microsoft Windows Server, all supported by the technical expertise of New Era. This network rebuild and migration to the cloud has standardised their network operations, provided a common interface for students, teachers and staff and given them a platform for future growth.
Simple things now easy “Simple things that we couldn’t do before, such as document sharing, are now fast and easy,” says Richard Barnett, Principal of Pukekohe High School. “New Era’s management of the upgrade was equally fast and easy. In addition to configuring 12 new virtual servers and migrating email from Groupwise to Microsoft Exchange, the team from New Era reconfigured almost 850 laptops and workstations to be managed by Intune. All over the holidays and all without any disruptions.”
Exploring options Pukekohe High School had made significant investments in infrastructure in 2017. They had upgraded their wireless and switching capabilities, replaced their sever stack with 20 virtual and 3 physical servers and added disaster recovery and back-up capabilities. This upgrade gave them enough capacity to manage their growth through 2019.
As the servers neared the end of their warranty cycle, Pukekohe High School began exploring their options for moving forward. PHS had a legacy software solution that made it difficult for students and staff to take full advantage of digital learning. In addition, their reliance on physical servers meant that upgrades and maintenance required constant operational management. What had worked well in the past was no longer the best option. “One of my first initiatives when I was appointed Principal in mid2018 was to move forward with an upgrade,” continues Principal Barnett. “New Era, with whom the school had a Consultancy Agreement, had prepared a comprehensive audit of our hardware, software and operating procedures. The audit not only gave us a snapshot of what we had at that time but outlined a pathway forward – based on a comprehensive Microsoft stack – that would address all of our current challenges and prepare for future growth.”
Compelling case to standardise with Microsoft “Our audit highlighted two key findings,” says Michael Delgrosso, Client Manager at New Era. “The first was that PHS would need a major upgrade for their networking software and servers to support their growing reliance on digital learning and administration. The second was that a cloud-based Microsoft solution would give them exactly what they needed at a price they could afford.” New Era presented their findings, in association with Microsoft, in an interactive workshop to PHS administration and senior staff. “We knew that we needed to make some changes,” says Principal Barnett, “but we weren’t exactly sure which way to turn. New Era spelled out our current situation, identified our challenges and then outlined a way forward with Microsoft.” An important aspect of the joint Microsoft / New Era presentation was the fact that PHS could leverage Microsoft’s Schools Agreement with the Ministry of Education to empower the cloud migration. A spokesperson from Microsoft explained how Microsoft 365 could successfully address many of the issues facing PHS. “They presented such a compelling case,” continues Principal Barnett,” that we decided to take their recommendations. We scheduled the upgrade over the 2018/2019 holiday break to minimise any disruptions.
Painless migration “New Era pretty much took care of everything,” continues Principal Barnett. “The most labour-intensive task was configuring Microsoft Office 365 on more than 850 individual devices such as laptops and workstations. Initially staff weren’t very happy about surrendering their laptops to New Era for the upgrade. But when they returned from break and switched their devices on, I didn’t hear a single complaint …not one! They immediately started to use the various tools inside Microsoft 365 such as Office, Outlook, One Drive, Exchange Online and more and never looked back.” To help iron out any teething issues, New Era assigned an engineer to the school for a month. “This was especially helpful as we needed to tweak a few things such as connecting the printers via Microsoft
365 Relay and setting up the Azure Active Directory,” says Delgrosso, “But with our engineer on site and informal and formal professional development sessions, we soon had the new network – and users - working together well. Microsoft Learning Consultant Crispin Lockwood has been especially valuable by providing on-going end user professional development.” “One of the things we did prior to the upgrade,” continues Delgrosso, “was to hold informal workshops with staff and teachers to fully understand their requirements and frustrations under the legacy network. Their overwhelming response was that they wanted a change and a more standardised approach to ICT. These insights helped us immensely as we designed the new network.”
Smooth operations Since the upgrade, PHS has continued to evolve their network.
“The Microsoft solution is now a vital component of our ICT programme,” explains Principal Barnett. “The more we use it and learn about all of the functions and capabilities the more value we receive. For instance, Microsoft Teams allows us to collaborate easily via messaging and file-sharing. But it’s possible to get overwhelmed with all of the options. So we’ve had to think very carefully about what we want to achieve and then apply the tools in a well-thought out manner.” The post-installation service provided by New Era has been especially helpful. “If I need something – anything at all – an email to Michael gets a fast response,” concludes Principal Barnett. “The major benefits for us are that the Microsoft 365 solution has allowed us to consolidate our ICT resources, standardise our interfaces and allow us to focus on teaching instead of operating a legacy network. That was my goal when I came on board in 2018 and that’s exactly what we have achieved.”
Insights:
A Brave New Habit Currently our world is simultaneously expanding and contracting. Without being too dramatic, our personal and professional environments have, at least in our minds, altered forever. But this may not be all bad. One positive may be the impetus to change, adapt and grow. Sometimes we only learn things or change what we do when we are given no other option. At New Era, current circumstances mean that we too have been exploring the ways that we work. Not only the way that we work internally, but smarter ways that we can support you. But what about who this is really all about - the kids? Our young people have traditionally been given opportunities like school camps, field trips and exchange programmes to experience new things, and push the limits of not just their understanding, but their capacity. As one-off events, these can be formative for the young mind and have a profound influence on the choices they make. Another part of what we do as teachers is to promote good habits for our students that benefit their ability to successfully learn. We do this through structure, incentive and modelling amongst various other approaches.
Embrace a New Structure
Lining up outside the door, being quiet while the roll is taken, or putting up the chairs on a Friday afternoon are now irrelevant in our current context. But this does not mean that routine and rules no longer have any value.
Embrace the World of the Learner
Think Lateral and Make Mistakes
For many of our learners the digital environment is native. Although this concept in itself is not new, the current context most certainly is. Most schools have many of their materials and some of their instruction online, but never have they been forced to use them all of the time for an extended period.
From the way that you provide learning materials to students, to the way that you assess and provide feedback, there are a myriad of tools at our disposal to adapt and do things differently. Trying different things won’t always go right or work out the way you thought they would. Maybe having all students from a class meeting online all at once is problematic, so why not try smaller groups for a shorter amount of focused time? What is the harm in trying? Trust your instinct, skills and experience as a reflective practitioner. We are always encouraging our students to try new things and make mistakes as they learn, so why not take the opportunity to do this yourself?
Take feedback as an example. In a social sense, our learners constantly provide feedback, opinions and perspective to each other. These interactions are natural and embrace the way that young people communicate. This can be a scary concept as a teacher as we may view the social media vernacular as one that is totally inappropriate for a school setting. But if we think back to the example of the one-off school camp, we know that if expectations are kept clear in this new environment this does not necessarily mean a degradation in behaviour. In fact, sometimes students can thrive given an environment they are more confident and comfortable in. It is not a stretch to imagine a student who would never put their hand up in class being ok to offer online feedback.
Additionally, digital interactions can go beyond the traditional content and curriculum. Sharing a picture of your own backyard, your bookshelf or even (as I have seen one teacher do), an old report card, can provide a connection and richness to the relationships with your students that may never have occurred to you unless you were working from home away from the physical school site.
A New Set of Expectations
So how can we capitalise on this unique situation in terms of teaching and learning?
New Era IT Ltd. | P: 0800 438 428 | W: www.newerait.co.nz | E: info@newerait.co.nz Prices in this brochure are valid as of 21/04/2020 and are subject to change. Errors and omissions excluded.
Keep the Interactions
With playground duty and walking from one side of the school to the other off the cards for a while, there is a unique opportunity to invest in new interactions with individuals and groups of students. Technology affords us the ability to do this easily and is a natural partner to the formative and collaborative side of assessment. Utilising real-time peer and teacher feedback, providing online examples in a captive environment, and scaffolded assessments are easily achievable methodologies using remote technology.
The internet and many parts of the digital world can be like a pinball machine of shiny lights and attractions. It can be overwhelming as a teacher to navigate as the mere scale of it seems unsurmountable. But it can be done successfully. In my observation right now teachers are examining the way that they structure not only their programmes with students, but their interactions with them and the changing notion of a “classroom”. Take student engagement as an example. It may be that those that struggle to stay motivated and complete work independently, require a more rigorous structure of checks and balances which is actually more achievable in a digital environment. It may even be easier in an online world to do a check in with a small group of students who may be struggling with motivation as opposed to trying to do this in a physical school setting.
While there will always be students who push the limits whether online or not, setting a clear expectation of appropriate online interaction, attendance and engagement is essential in creating a conducive environment for learning. It may be worth discussing with your colleagues about how they are setting these expectations with students online. Maybe even involve the parents, at least initially. The chances are that they will available to engage in a way that might normally not be possible.
I believe we are in a unique situation at the moment that allows us to combine the two notions of forced change through a particular set of circumstances (the one-offs I referred to earlier) as well as the opportunity to develop new habits and ways of thinking and doing.
It is not a stretch to imagine a student who would never put their hand up in class being ok to offer online feedback
of the risk with this can be negated by the new types of healthy and professional connections you can make with students that otherwise would have not have been possible. I have always believed that New Zealand teachers are some of the most resourceful, imaginative and resilient practitioners in the world. We are now forced into a set of circumstances that allow us to continue to challenge, grow and adapt what we do for our learners and for our own professional journey. Embrace these times and seek out new habits and approaches. Will there be pain? Yes. Will we make mistakes? Yes. Will we be better teachers for it? I certainly hope so. Kia kaha.

Your Relationships Count More than Ever We have never relied upon technology so much and yet at the same been so acutely aware of our craving for human interaction. As the world is getting both bigger and smaller at the same time, the relationships you have with your students are now more important than ever. Physical isolation should never be taken lightly. Pricing regulations around New Zealand’s copper telephone network are being relaxed in 2020 due to the near-ubiquitous presence of Ultra-Fast Fibre that can deliver these voice services at a fraction of the cost. This means that replacing your old copper-based phone system is a matter of when, not if. Moving to a cloud-based telecommunications solution means saying goodbye to those old copper lines and expensive hardware, and saying hello to a future-proof, scalable and feature-rich system that allows you to focus on teaching and learning.
