The New Era Story Across education, from students and teachers to ICT managers, New Era empowers educational organisations to bring the digital education revolution to life.
Greg Strachan Chief Executive Officer
From the CEO
Back in 1996, we set out to become recognised as New Zealand’s leader in the delivery of next-generation education solutions. Our vision was to be the partner of choice for primary, secondary & tertiary education providers as well as the Ministry of Education working to enhance student achievement and promote new models of learning.
Welcome back to Term Three, I hope this message finds you well and rested. Term Two for our team felt like an eternity this year, with the impact of Covid-19 and the uncertainty it brought it has placed a considerable amount of pressure upon organisations throughout NZ. With what felt like a complete reboot of the year everyone was trying to catchup and get back to normal, however it was late April not early February.
Today more than two million educators, students and parents globally trust New Era Technology’s ICT and professional development solutions to enhance and achieve their education experiences and goals. With more than 160 employees in NZ and over 400 globally, it is New Era’s knowledge and understanding of the education environment along with its vast experience in state-of-the-art, high quality ICT solutions that allows New Era Technology to stand out from the competition.
It’s been quite a journey, one that has taken us from a small education services provider to the largest integrated education solutions and services company in NZ. Following our merger in 2011 with Editure, New Era Technology now spans New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States and brings unparalleled global and local understanding of educational ICT solutions to our customers.
Like our customers we’re excited about the power and possibilities of technology, the evolution of new devices, platforms and curriculum, and the potential of today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders.
This year is one we all will never forget and the pressures it has bought to bear has been very difficult for all of New Zealand. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our client schools for continuing to maintain their business with us throughout lockdown and moving forward. As is the case for most businesses in New Zealand, Covid-19 has impacted us here at New Era and we are greatly appreciative of the support received.
Our Values: Amazingness We make a real difference for our customers. We’re passionate about technology, innovation and creativity.
On a more positive note, as kiwis we really are very fortunate in that we do have a relative normal and we are back at work and school and able to move freely without lockdown restrictions. Thankfully, we are unlikely to return to lockdown, I cannot imagine how hard and disruptive that must be for the likes of our Aussie friends in Victoria.
Enjoyment We enjoy working in a supportive team environment. We like to have fun and value strong relationships.
Speaking of the new normal, we look forward to seeing some of you at the SPANZ (Secondary Principals’ Association of New Zealand) and ABSNZ (Association of Boys’ School New Zealand) conferences, which we are proud to support, over the next few months.
Kindness We care for each other and for the environment. We are open and inclusive in what we do as a company. Truthfulness We take ownership of our actions, are transparent in our dealings and we do what we say we’ll do.
In other news, our clients have recently received a survey asking for feedback and suggestions around areas that we can refine, define and improve. This process is incredibly important to us, as we believe we need to adapt what we do to suit the needs of schools in a rapidly evolving technological environment. This information will help inform our planning for the rest of this year and beyond. Thank you to those that have taken the time to respond. Like you, ultimately much of our focus is student-centred and on developing respectful relationships that encourage positive outcomes for all.
Appreciation We understand our clients’ needs, treat each other fairly, recognise achievement and celebrate success.
Our Partners Our partners are, without exception, leaders in their fields and work closely with us to ensure our clients are provided with consistently excellent outcomes.
Finally, on behalf of the team, we wish you all the best for Term Three. Kind Regards
Greg

Continuous Improvement with
Viscount Primary School Students, teachers and staff at Mangere’s Viscount Primary School (VPS) are excited about all of the positive changes at their school. “We’ve added more Chromebooks and iPads for students, upgraded the AV capabilities at our school hall, deployed VOIP for cost savings and migrated our school data to Google Docs,” says Shirley Hardcastle, Principal at VPS. “And the tech team from New Era Technology has been absolutely essential for all of our ICT initiatives.” The school also upgraded the old bell system. The new system has timing for bells/ music and the capacity to broadcast notices as well as providing in the Emergency PA capacity inside and outside. Teacher Leigh Stevens has been at VPS for well over a decade and has been the de facto tech ‘go-to guy’ for most of that time. “We have a pretty good understanding of the ICT resources we need to support the modern school environment,” he says, “but we are not specialists by any means. This is why we value New Era’s advice, assistance and hands-on support. They take care of the day-to-day network issues so that we can focus on our students, teaching and planning for the future.”
“It turns out that the problem was a piece of hardware managed by our ISP…outside of New Era’s area of responsibility…but they worked with the ISP to isolate the problem, get the faulty router fixed and then rebooted so that everything was back up and running. By then it was 10pm. This is just one example where the New Era team will do what it takes to get the job done, even if it requires after-hours effort.”
Comprehensive, multi-touch support “We look at New Era’s support team as part of our Whanau,” continues Principal Hardcastle. “They understand our needs, respect our values and work within our constraints to deliver the best possible outcomes. A critical component of our overall relationship is their Development Plan, a working document that provides a snapshot of our current environment, a vision of the future and a set of specific tasks and timelines to help us achieve our goals.”
“New Era’s School Development Plans are fairly detailed,” explains New Era’s Judi McNie, Client Manager for VPS. “We have regular meetings with Principal Hardcastle and Mr Stevens where we work together to identify areas for improvement. At the same time our on-site tech people and the Help Desk are ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground and make note of where we can add value to network operations. The end result is a strategic plan that the school can use for budgeting, scheduling and compliance.” “With New Era’s Development Plan,” explains Principal Hardcastle, “we can ensure that we can support our current initiatives, prepare a foundation for growth and allocate resources appropriately.”
Continuous improvement Many of the projects first mooted in the Development Plan have been successfully implemented. “A big one for us was the migration of our data to Google Docs,” says Principal Hardcastle. “There was virtually no disruption during the transition, New Era did all the work behind the scenes.” Similar results were achieved with adding advanced AV capabilities at the school hall. “We’d been wanting this for years,” she continues, “but we never really specified exactly what we needed. So we sat down with Judi and her team and she outlined our options, the benefits and what we needed to do. Literally a month after that meeting the new AV capabilities were in place and now it is a wellused learning hub for students.”
Help Desk support over and above New Era’s support goes beyond everyday activities. In early June, around 4pm on a school day, VPS’s internet connection failed. “We had no idea why…it was an extremely unusual event,” Mr Stevens says. “We called the New Era Help Desk and notified them of the event. New Era’s team immediately took ownership of the issue and drilled down into the system to find out why.
Improved resiliency Along with the rest of New Zealand, the recent Covid 19 disruption severely tested Viscount Primary School’s resiliency. “Because we had migrated our data to Google Docs,” notes Mr Stevens, “teachers and staff had full access to all of the digital resources they needed even though the school itself sat empty. New Era’s Help Desk also stepped up and offered one-on-one telephone support for those who needed it. As a result, we were able to weather the storm and pick up where we left off.”
Looking to the future More screens for students and more hands-on training for teachers are priorities for VPS. “We have a well-oiled network running in the background,” concludes Principal Hardcastle, “so now we can focus on taking full advantage of all of the digital resources at our disposal. We are very excited about what we have achieved and are looking forward to building on that success with the full support from New Era Technology.”
Probably like you, I have spent a significant amount of time reading about the various things that people have learnt from New Zealand’s time during Lockdown. The range and quality of the information are, as you would expect, diverse. There have been some major themes, regardless of the source, that has immerged from schools’ experiences.
3. Be ruthless about your milestones. It is critical to review and check that you are making tangible progress. There is always a risk in technology that the “new” things are, by nature, better simply because they are new. Milestones allow an element of checking and measuring progress against fundamentals. I would encourage these metrics, such as the number of teachers using a particular platform, to be linked to specific learning outcomes that are core to the school’s measurement of success.
•
4. Network with your friends. From observation, there is a wide range of diversity within current practice. This is not unexpected with the variety of socio-economic factors, resourcing limitations and leadership styles that exist in New Zealand schools. At New Era we have seen schools opting in and out of BYOD programmes, schools adjusting timetables outside of the traditional, and schools that are using online tools to help students co-construct courses for 2021. You will have your networks to talk to, but please do consider talking to New Era as your trusted advisors, as we are in the fortunate position to see a wide range of practices.
• •
Use of technology in teaching and learning has accelerated exponentially during Lockdown Staff who may have been resistant have, generally, got on board Some students are enjoying the flexibility and diversity of programme delivery that has come with Lockdown
Right now, I believe the critical question is: How do we maintain momentum from these gains? The following are some thoughts on how you and your school might maintain the momentum: 1. Have a plan. Anyone that has trained towards a goal knows that it takes consistency and reaching a series of pre-determined milestones to ensure the best chance of success. This is also what we teach our students. If we do not plan for an environment where momentum can be maintained, it will be lost. In a school, it is easy to get caught up in administration and the day-today and not step back and take time to formulate this plan and to get your staff and students on board with it. If you already have a plan, review it. If you do not have one, get one sorted. 2. Collect good data. You may have done this already, but useful data allows you to be efficient with the limited resourcing and time that you have to meet your goals. • •

Maintaining Momentum
• •
By Tony Gilbert
•
Consider: What is the student voice regarding the way they may like to work? How could programme flexibility and delivery be changed to accommodate both learners and teachers? What are the physical or technological learning barriers that may exist? What are the risks when changing the way things work in a new environment? What is it that teachers and learners do not want to change? Is this shift sustainable and feasible?
5. Remove the barriers. There is nothing more frustrating than when something won’t work. Ensuring your technical backbone, ranging from wireless access to appropriate device availability and cloud integrations, is essential to maintaining momentum. The resourcing needs of schools differ in terms of the way technology can be accessed at home versus when students are at school. This may be a simple logistical barrier that can be overcome with investment in a purchase, lease or a project. More difficult to overcome are the pedagogical and practice-based obstacles that can impede momentum and sow seeds of negativity. Planning is your friend when removing barriers to maintain momentum. It helps to demonstrate clear and articulated leadership and, for your sanity, allows decisions to be proactive, not reactive. Being dedicated to education, New Era would be delighted to help you maintain the momentum and shifts your staff and students have made.

TotalCloud. Voice. Why Teams Calling?
Ease of use
Microsoft Teams is a unified communication and collaboration platform that combines chat, video meetings, file storage, and application integration.
Empower your staff to work more effectively when and where they need to by enabling them to make calls to landlines or mobiles within Microsoft Teams with EduVoice enabled Teams Calling.
New Era Technology enables Teams Calling with direct routing completes Microsoft Teams by adding high quality calling functionality to and from the public phone network, directly from the Teams application. It gives you the functionality of a traditional Phone System (PBX) with call-handling functions like call hold, transfer, forwarding and voicemail all in the cloud, but without the actual PBX.
Not all voice solutions are created equal, and we want to make sure you have the right tools for your school.
Microsoft Teams has an intuitive and user-friendly environment; even the most tech-adverse people can easily collaborate and use full telephony functionality within Teams. However, if your school has requirements such as call recording, complex call flows and/or call centre functionality for reception areas, then please give us call and we can point you in the right direction Microsoft is pouring a lot of resources into Teams, which makes us believe that over time the features sets will start to converge but for now, if you are a small to medium-sized school that doesn’t require advanced calling features and just wants a collaborative space that has calling functionality added to it, then Teams Calling might be the perfect option for you.
