The New Era Story
From the CEO Greg Strachan Chief Executive Officer
From students and teachers to ICT managers, New Era empowers educational organisations to bring the digital education revolution to life. Back in 1996, we set out to become recognised as New Zealand’s leader in the delivery of next-generation education IT solutions. Our vision was to be the partner of choice for primary, secondary & tertiary education providers as well as the Ministry of Education, working to enhance student achievement and promote new models of learning.
Hello Everyone
It’s been quite a journey, one that has taken us from a small education services provider to the largest integrated education solutions and services company in NZ. Following our merger in 2011 with Editure, New Era Technology now spans New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States and brings unparalleled global and local understanding of educational ICT solutions to our customers.
Happy New Year!! Hopefully, you have had a good break and are fully recharged to take on 2021. Thankfully the summer having been other than a little windy has been a stunner...just what was needed for everyone’s wellbeing.
Today more than two million educators, students and parents globally trust New Era Technology’s ICT and professional development solutions to enhance and achieve their education experiences and goals. With more than 160 employees in NZ and over 400 globally, it is our knowledge and understanding of the education environment along with its vast experience in state-of-the-art, high quality ICT solutions that allows New Era Technology to stand out from the competition.
After a very tumultuous 2020, we are looking forward to getting on with 2021 and having a hugely more positive year, even if there is still a global pandemic.
Like our customers, we’re excited about the power and possibilities of technology, the evolution of new devices, platforms and curriculum, and helping today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders.
As I am sure everyone is well aware, we are extremely lucky to be here in New Zealand during these times. Hopefully by year end we will be in an even better place with a nationwide vaccination program and just maybe, there will be a chance of a return to relative normality for 2022.
Our Values:
This year we are focussing heavily on improving our service delivery across the business, a small example of this is the recent investment we have made around our service desk. We have upgraded the phone systems which we use, providing new features such as automated callback to clients rather than waiting in a queue and very importantly providing valuable reporting of wait times, call numbers and insights into call volumes and trends.
Amazingness We make a real difference for our customers. We’re passionate about technology, innovation and creativity. Enjoyment We enjoy working in a supportive team environment. We like to have fun and value strong relationships. Kindness We care for each other and for the environment. We are open and inclusive in what we do as a company.
With technology now being so pervasive and incredibly important in the running of a school it is critical schools understand that no one person can ever have enough knowledge to fully support the myriad of technologies they now utilise. This is why when a school becomes a New Era client they are not just provided a technician. We wrap layers of support with technicians, technical team leaders, service desk, engineers and very importantly a dedicated client manager that can translate “techo’ into plain English.
Truthfulness We take ownership of our actions, are transparent in our dealings and we do what we say we’ll do. Appreciation We understand our clients’ needs, treat each other fairly, recognise achievement and celebrate success.
Throughout 2021, we will again be heavily supportive of educational conferences and organisations such as SPANZ, School Business Managers, Area Schools, Independent Schools, Catholic Secondary Schools, Beginning Principals Hui, ABSNZ, and local cluster groups to name but a few.
Our Partners Our partners are, without exception, leaders in their fields and work closely with us to ensure our clients are provided with consistently excellent outcomes.
We look forward to seeing you there. All the best for 2021 Cheers Greg

Client Story: Shirley Boys’ High and New Era foster growth in students and staff
S
ometimes schools and commercial businesses can seem a world apart. Schools focus on educational outcomes whilst businesses are, generally, profit-driven. But, putting these differences aside, well-run schools and businesses both recognise the importance of supporting their people and ensuring that they have the tools and opportunities for continued professional growth. New Era and SBHS: Working together to develop skills and improve outcomes
change to move from having our own in-house ICT capabilities to an outsourced model.” Will was up to the task. “He immediately won Dan’s trust,” continues Headmaster Grocott, “which was a crucial part of our transition. And he also won over staff with his ability to work hard for the school and help individuals get a grip with the new systems. He never seemed to get flustered, he never flapped about stuff, he never got cross at people. It was this ability, I think, to make people feel valued that really won everyone over.” So now it’s Will’s turn to leave big shoes to fill. “We talked a lot about his decision to become a teacher,” notes Assistant Headmaster Dan Gilmore, “especially around timing, the decision-making process and that kind of thing. It was most important to him that he did things
“We’d like to think that Shirley Boys’ has ‘grown’ Will,” says Tim Grocott, Headmaster of SBHS, “especially in his relationship with Dan Gilmore, our Assistant Headmaster and ICT expert on the senior team. Dan has mentored and worked closely with him on a number of initiatives. As a result, Will has blossomed in his role and has become a valued part of our team. We fully support his decision to continue his personal and professional development in the education sector.”
Dan Gilmore- Assistant Principal, Will Thew, Martin JefferysSystems Engineer, Tim Grocott- Headmaster
Will Thew, currently the on-site New Era technician at Christchurch’s Shirley Boys’ High School (SBHS) and soon-to-be teacher trainee at Canterbury University, is a perfect example of how business and education can combine to develop talent and ensure a secure pathway for further advancement. With support from both New Era and Shirley Boys’ High, Will will be taking his hands-on ICT experience and innate understanding of ‘how things work’ and applying it towards a career in education. “I’ve enrolled at the University of Canterbury’s training programme with the goal of becoming a teacher,” Will says. “It’s a natural progression. New Era gave me a great opportunity to understand how technology can empower students and facilitate administration. And my time at SBHS has allowed me to recognise when and how to best apply that technology for the greatest benefit. Most rewarding was supporting students to explore and grow their interests in the world of technology. New Era and SBHS have given me the best of both worlds in respect to professional development. I’m looking forward to putting those lessons to work in the classroom.”
“We look at Will’s entry into the teaching profession as a net gain,” says Tony Gilbert, National Education Manager at New Era Technology. “We all have the same goal…to increase positive outcomes for students, teachers and staff. And having ‘switched on’ teachers like Will can only benefit all concerned. We’re thrilled with Will’s decision to go back to school and finding a new way to contribute to the future.” Partnerships based on personal relationships are ingrained into New Era’s DNA. Open and frank communication, a clear understanding of the technology and a dedication to positive outcomes define New Era’s approach and Will has shown those qualities from day one. But it wasn’t easy.
Building trust When Will came on board in November 2018 he had big shoes to fill. He had just been assigned to the school as part of their transition to New Era’s outsourced network model, which included onsite technical support. “It was a challenge for him because he picked up from someone who had been a valued staff member,” says Headmaster Grocott. “Our previous tech person worked very hard for the school over a long period of time, built strong relationships with others and worked closely with Assistant Headmaster Dan Gilmore. It was a significant
the right way. Will has a high level of integrity and that, more than anything else, has helped him earn the trust of everyone he has worked with. We wish him all the luck in the world.” To replace Will, New Era has appointed Cory Brunt, a SBHS ‘old boy’ to the role. In turn, he will be supported by New Era engineer Martin Jeffreys, an ex-prefect of the school, so that continuity and institutional knowledge will be maintained. “New Era has an uncanny ability to find the right people for the right job,” continues Headmaster Grocott. “In fact, it is their deep pool of talent that prompted us to engage with New Era in the first place, when we were planning our pathway towards digital transition.”
Challenging transition Transitioning their ICT capabilities was a big challenge for the school. Dan estimates he spent upwards of 400 hours over two years planning for a network migration to help them expand their ICT capabilities. “We had to make decisions on how the processes and site-wide design would happen,” he says. “We wanted to ensure that the transition would be smooth. It was a big project for us and the potential for disaster was all too real.”
“We were looking for a shared services model alongside our co-location partner, Avonside Girls’ High School,” says Headmaster Grocott, “So our highest priority was to look for a service provider who could provide the right mix of ICT products and services in a shared environment. It was a fairly complex requirement. Our design team, headed by Dan, prepared a detailed tender that outlined exactly what we needed in respect to hardware and software, applications and system development. And, crucially, onsite support to help us manage the network and support users including staff, teachers and students.”
Ambitious transition programme “Shirley Boys’ High School had an ambitious transition planned,” says Tony Gilbert, “one that would require specialist skills such as cabling, wireless, even TV installation. A key aspect of our proposal was that we could call on our own internal national resources to complete the job. We have helped larger schools up and down the country manage change in their organisations because we have a highly-trained team on call that we can deploy on complex projects.” “New Era came on board in November 2018,” continues Headmaster Grocott, “and had an immediate impact, especially with Will. Their ability to deploy boots on the ground when we were transitioning sometimes made it feel that we had more New Era staff here than our own. Indeed, having New Era’s input allowed us to be more flexible with our decision-making because they were able to cope easily with any changes.”
Highly successful “The transition had the potential to be disastrous, especially with so many different people involved,” notes Dan. “We were very thankful that the process went relatively smoothly. The hands on deck from New Era was massive. A huge number of staff were involved in the process. And, not counting a few little things, by and large, that process, in reflection, was highly successful.” “Digital transition is shaping the way schools are evolving,” concludes Gilbert. “We’ve been involved in many such projects and are anticipating many more in the upcoming year. This will be a focus for us. But digital transition is more than just networks and workstations. It’s about acceptance, trust and building a skill base. That’s a key focus for us: to provide expert support to schools – pre- and post-transition – that ensures troublefree operations.” “And we can provide that because we hire the best and brightest, train them up the right way and then assign them to schools as per contract. It’s a formula that worked at Shirley Boys’ High, at other New Zealand schools and can work equally as well at your school” concludes Gilbert.

Insights: Axes, Shovels and Gardening Shears or Tony’s Top Tips for Successful ICT Gardening in your NZ School By Tony Gilbert National Education Manager
I
f you have ever tried to dig a hole with an axe, you will know that although it is possible, it is really not that easy. The same goes with splitting firewood with a shovel. The same goes for pruning of your favourite apple tree. Although possible with the axe and shovel, the time and risk involved warrants the use of garden shears.
Of course the problem with ICT choices in schools is that there are a huge number of garden implements to choose from and some of them have weird names and don’t play well with others. Worst of all, is when you are the Head Gardner and trying to feed the masses, the tools you do or don’t make available can have a massive effect on crop output. Throw into the mix, some pretty slick fertiliser, implement and irrigation sales people and the headache starts to form behind the eyes.
3. Beware of Uncle Tom’s Magic Tomato Grow Doubling your crops in one year or 150% growth is a “Snake Oil” type scenario. There is a very good reason I still have my parents “Yates Garden Guide” in my shed – it has been proven it works for a long time. Generally speaking there are no unseen gamerchangers in the world of ICT that have not been emerging in one form or another. ”The Cloud” is a good example of this – the Cloud has been around for years and years, it has just matured and developed in what it can offer.
I could talk endlessly about the merits of certain products, the seemingly age old debate of PC Vs Mac, Google Vs 365, but the reality is that as every good educator knows each environment is slightly different. The fundamentals of sunlight, food and care may remain the same, but from the pH of the soil, to the type of seedlings you get from the nursery, a Head Gardeners responsibility is to use their tools and experience to help those in their care grow strong. It would be amazing if all tools were available all the time for all people, but the reality of fixed budgets mean this is unrealistic.
4. Talk to Other Head Gardeners Sometimes it can be difficult with everything going on to know what is happening in your neighbouring gardens until the Market at the end of the year. This can prove even more difficult when your own internal specialist has specific tool knowledge that they are insisting you use. In the ICT world isolation is very dangerous. It is verging on impossible to know everything that is going on out there and even easier to get bogged down in technical terms and minutia. Perspective is essential whilst always holding onto the outcomes you want.
So the following is Tony’s Top Five Tips for Successful ICT Gardening in your NZ School
1. Know Your Soil If you have no idea the state of your network, from core infrastructure to the devices running on it, it is really difficult to know what you can and cannot achieve from a technical perspective. You need people you can trust to “straight shoot” around the condition of your soil who actually know something about it.
5. Pick Your Tools and Commit Once you feel you have a gauge of the previous, pick some tools and get on with it. If you have tested your soil, got advice on how to deal with bad weather, made sure your Gardeners know their stuff, talked to other Head Gardeners and invested in tools that have a track record – commit. Inevitability there will be some crops that struggle more than others. This however is the job of the skilled educator – the ability to adapt and adjust according to the best learning outcomes for the students. Whether it be an SMS, wireless system, computer lab or BYOD, doing something is better than doing nothing and hoping that things will be different.
2. Plan For the Weather No matter what crops you are growing, there will always be unknown elements that effect what you doing. The reality is that in ICT these things, unless planned for, can have a profound effect on you not only financially but your ability to execute meaningful teaching and learning. Again, good advice and implementation of systems that you hopefully never need is crucial. A classic example of this is Internet Filtering and Firewalling products. There are products that can tell you a bunch of cool stuff, but then there are products that can do something about it (see Smoke Alarms Vs Sprinklers)
Hopefully these gardening tips have been of some use to you, even solely as a point of reflection. The New Era team and I are always here to have a chat and offer a bit of perspective, but please don’t get me started on crop rotation…
