From the CEO Greg Strachan Chief Executive Officer

Kia ora, Incredibly it is May already and Term 2 has kicked off - 2021 is already nearly halfway done! In the past few months (in between lockdowns), we have been busy working alongside the Ministry of Education and Network for Learning (N4L), running a series of “Heads Up” informational seminars in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch. We had fantastic turnouts and were very happy to facilitate these for our clients and the wider educational community. We received very positive feedback from those that attended, and the seminars turned out to be a great way for the key stakeholders to directly engage with the MoE and N4L around all things ICT. Beyond our Heads-Up seminars, during March we hosted a number of schools from throughout the country for two days here in Auckland. We hired minibuses and had an excellent few days visiting client schools. The host schools provided valuable insights into their ICT journeys and outcomes, and that they had experienced. There were thoughtful Q&A sessions that were very engaging that I am sure were enlightening to many visitors. Thanks must also go to our partners HP and Lenovo, who helped support this event. As part of our growth and development strategy, New Era plans to continue these initiatives moving forward; it is a small way in which we can provide additional value to clients and responsibly contribute back to those that support us. Moving into Term 2 we continue to grow and develop our teams and deliver as much local support as possible to our clients. To this end, I am proud to announce New Era has started investing heavily in its team members, offering salary incentives to upskill and complete ICT based qualifications. Having our team members as qualified as possible benefits the individual, New Era and most importantly, our clients. Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a great upcoming term and, of course, if there is anything you require around ICT please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our amazing team! Ngā mihi Greg Strachan

Client Story:

Kadimah School: Full STEAM ahead

T

echnology is front and centre at Auckland’s Kadimah School where students use Apple iPads for a wide range of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) initiatives. “STEAM enables children to be creative and think outside the box,” says Sue Meltzer, Principal of Kadimah School, an inclusive primary school (Year 0 – 8) with a strong tradition of academic excellence. “STEAM helps our students apply their understanding of core subjects in practical ways. It is important that all children in this generation and beyond have a sound STEAM-based knowledge to support their learning into the future and take them into careers that are yet to be established.”

Apple iPads Key components of Kadimah School’s STEAM initiatives are a network of 73 Apple iPads, powered by a Mobile Device Management (MDM). “The students engage with their iPads to learn vital skills for today’s digital environment,” continues Principal Meltzer. “The children make films and documentaries, create their own animations and learn all about coding. They are working on environmental projects and robotics, and developing skills in music and other cultural activities.” They are applying what they learn to successfully participate in local, regional and national science fairs.

“iPads are very easy to use for all agegroups and there are a wide range of educational resources and apps available, all optimised to run on them. In short, our iPads have made STEAM learning fun, relevant and rewarding.”

New technology from New Era To provide robust network availability and reduce reliance on in-house infrastructure and tech support, Kadimah School engaged New Era Technology for their cloudbased managed network, EduServe. “Kadimah School was an ‘early adopter’ of EduServe,” says Judi McNie, Client Manager at New Era Technology, “and they have continued to take advantage of the many benefits it has provided since then.” “We had three goals when we started our journey towards

‘digital transformation’,” explains Principal Meltzer. “We wanted to focus on pedagogy instead of tech support. We needed to provide the highest levels of functionality, security and access for students and staff. And we needed to replace our aging servers. “New Era’s EduServe addressed our immediate concerns and provided a platform for further development. We felt that they understood our requirements and that they would be with us for the long-haul. And now, after more than five years, our trust has been more than rewarded.” “We provide a technician for one half-day every fortnight for hands-on support,” continues McNie, “and host their web site. I meet with Sue and her team, typically once a month, and we discuss their programmes, any new developments from the MoE and what to expect down the road. It’s a great relationship and they are taking maximum advantage of the benefits of technology to provide a strong STEAM focus for students.”

On-line learning Last year’s lockdown put the focus on managed services and on-line learning. “We were able to transition to an online model last year with very few hiccups,” notes Principal Meltzer. “In fact, the pandemic gave us the confidence to pivot more and more of our activities to go on-line when required. As a result, we have more flexibility in the way we can provide opportunities for students and the wider community.” A case in point is the Student Council. “They now deliver their news broadcasts by Zoom,” she continues, “which allows for a wider participation from students and their families. We’re in the process of fund-raising for a new broadcast studio and being able to show-off our STEAM capabilities to stakeholders has been a major plus.” Apple iPads, a focus on STEAM and New Era’s EduServe provide a robust platform for Kadimah School students to fully embrace digital transformation. Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce and leaders and their lives will be defined by technology. New Era’s solutions help students, staff and families understand the basics and move forward. It’s an exciting time at Kadimah School as their students embrace new ideas ‘Full-STEAM’ ahead.

A People Business –

Strength Through Diversity An insight into New Era as a Business In a series of upcoming articles New Era will be sharing what we are all about and the initiatives we are taking for our people and to support education in Aotearoa. Recently New Era has begun a journey to “walk the talk” when it comes to embracing diversity. We understand that our staff are the most important part of our business and we want to encourage the differences our people have and ensure they feel safe and valued. This helps with everything from retention, to growth and, we hope, ultimately leads you, our clients, to understand better what we stand for, making our relationship stronger.

At another level, it shows a reflection of what many kura and schools have been doing for years. In the commercial world, much like a teacher in a classroom, it is often said you “need to understand the needs of those that you are working with”. With this comes a level of social and emotional intelligence that takes effort to grow and maintain. By embracing diversity, we are taking ownership of our own learning – again, something that quality school leadership has done with its staff and students for years. We also hope our people, that are privileged to work in and with schools, serve as role models. There can be no doubt that seeing someone “a bit like you” no matter what that means, provides a scaffolding for your own possibilities.

Where did this come from?

Being Brave

Well, ultimately, it came from a good hard look at how schools work. Schools are there to serve a learning community and those that do it effectively understand that through embracing the differences makes you feel more attached to the school as a collective entity.

If we are honest, the technology field in New Zealand is traditionally dominated by males and underrepresented in certain ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Although, upon examination, we are doing better than the average statistics, we know we can do better. Diversity on paper does not intrinsically mean a sense of value, whether that be a school, company or in fact wider society.

So what does this look like? We intend to identify and understand the diversity that exists in our people. The things we know about and the things we don’t. Understandably, New Era is often described as technology company. This is correct at a number of levels, but in reality, we really are a people business. For us here at New Era, it means one foot in front of the other while looking ahead. We don’t have all the answers and we do not believe there is ever a final destination, but we must take the journey.

So what does this mean for our clients? At one level, it is some reassurance that we are growing and being proactive in the examination of what we do and how we do it. In truly recognizing we are a people business we not only want our people to grow, but we want them to be reassured that we will have no tolerance for behavior that is marginalising and Machiavellian.

Providing support for New Zealand schools across the country for over 23 years, we feel it is our duty to begin to set a standard around diversity and inclusion. We want to encourage and support a rainbow of people to explore the exciting world of technology in education and that no matter who you are, where you come from or what you believe, there is a safe and nurturing place for you. We are currently working with some local and national initiatives to see if there is something tangible that we can do to shift this traditional trend – so watch this space! We welcome thoughts and feedback from those of you that are on this journey in your own personal and professional lives, as we do not believe we have all the answers. We do, however, have two ears to listen and a voice to kōrero. By Tony Gilbert National Education Manager

Celebrating

interviews with our CEO and Ne In the last few months, key milestones have happened for two senior staff at New Era. Firstly, our CEO, Greg Strachan has marked his 20th year at the company. Throughout his time, he has seen the ups and downs and ins and outs associated with supporting schools in New Zealand. Hailing from a technical background, he has quickly learnt that New Era really is a “People Business” and ensuring that building a team with the right people and culture that reflect core values, is what really counts. It is also with great sadness, but with immense gratitude that we farewell John Mansbridge after almost 15 years with New Era and decades supporting schools in various roles. John is one of those people that have always held themselves with dignity, pride and integrity and has been instrumental in onboarding a plethora of schools and kura across Aotearoa. John will be taking a wellearned retirement from the formal day-to-day activities at New Era and spending more time with his beautiful mokopuna. In these two interviews with these two important members of the New Era whanau, we get insight given their tenure and experience supporting schools across this beautiful country. We asked Greg and John the same six questions. 1. When did you start at New Era and what roles have you had while you have been here? 2. What previous roles did you have before joining New Era? 3. What are the biggest changes you have seen in technology that has affected education during your time at New Era? 4. What factors have contributed to your long service at New Era? 5. Tell us a little bit about what you in your spare time. 6. Given your experience, what advice would you give to those in leadership positions in NZ schools?

Greg Strachan

1.

I joined New Era in 2000, initially as a contract Systems Engineer. I was lucky enough to be involved in the building and rebuilding of some of our first major clients of which almost all remain today. From there I ran the Technical Services Team in a period of reasonably rapid growth. For a time, I was the Solutions Manager exploring the emerging technologies that were impacting schools and seeing how we could appropriately advice on the choices they were faced with. This eventually led to be becoming the General Manager and then onto CEO.

2.

When I was young, I went on an extended “OE” for 7 years working in various roles including working within merchant banking supporting traders, a model for a hamburger commercial, a “Foreman” for a company that provided freestanding structures for various organisations, including the US military in Saudi Arabia during operation Desert Storm, Mu’ammar Al-Qadhdhāfī in Tripoli Libya, the European PGA, European Formula 1 and the Lillehammer Winter Olympics. It sounds flash, but basically I was in charge of putting up really big tents. Upon returning to New Zealand, I worked as a Helpdesk technician and after some time became the Technical Services Manager at Ihug, before freelancing for 5 years as a contract systems engineer.

3.

There have been three elements as I see them. Firstly, the stability of the technology itself. It has become more reliable and robust in what it is able to be offered. Initially there was a lot of “bending” to suit a

product and the limited functionality it may have. Now, things are significantly more stable and flexible. Secondly, the Cloud. The ability to have high speed connections and access to cloud services from anywhere in a way that means mobility and continuity is massive for education. The days of multiple duplicate files, large scale onsite servers and wrestling with bespoke applications are dwindling. Finally, integration. Any vendor or developer who is likely to be successful now realises that user experience is paramount, particularly in a place like education. Students and teachers need to be able to get on with teaching and learning and do not want to muck around simply accessing things. Using smart tools and integrations have been a massive shift in the conduit for the delivery of assessment and curriculum.

4.

Foremost the quality of the people and the chance to support their growth as professionals. And alongside this I have made some great friends many of whom I still work with today. I also enjoy the variety of the role and the diversity of clients and staff. It is nice to also have some flexibility and variety in things that you deal with daily – sometimes you are dealing with a challenge directly in front of you, other times looking at the big picture and strategy. It has also been about being able to contribute to something that has meaning, in my case, education. The bigger altruistic nature of contributing to society has elements that help you sleep better at night – yes, we may be a commercial entity, but we are supporting our most precious resource, our young people for the betterment of NZ.

5.

At heart, I am an outdoors person. I was bought up on a farm, hunting and fishing from a young age. I enjoy nothing better than sitting on the Hauraki Gulf with a rod in hand hopefully snagging a giant kingfish. Equally, I enjoy time at the beach or again, on the boat, with my family. This is however, becoming increasing difficult as they get older, as it is not nearly as cool to hang with Mum and Dad. I have two children a boy and a girl, aged 20 and 18, respectively.

6.

Take the time to be measured with decision-making when navigating aspects that have elements in the commercial sphere. The commercial world is vast and often confusing. Ensure that your commercials partners follow their values and are trustworthy and act with integrity. Good partners will have tenure and proven capability as well. Like within your own teams, these are the things to keep forefront. Whoever you work with should have values that align with you and your community – price is not always everything, especially when things take an unexpected turn.

Congratulations Greg from all the team on your 20 years at New Era !

Milestones -

ew Era legend John Mansbridge John Mansbridge

1.

2008 saw New Era IT become involved in exciting international opportunities including being involved with Islamic countries such as Malaysia, Brunei and Saudi Arabia. Because my wife Pidge and I had worked in both South East Asia and the Middle East, the directors of New Era offered us the chance to join an educational delegation to Saudi Arabia. Our role was to focus on the pastoral (social) wellbeing of the group as the maintenance of mental health can be challenged in certain hostile environments around the globe. When the Middle Eastern contract failed to eventuate, I had already started some marketing activity for New Era and because of the changes of circumstance, I permanently joined the team at New Era. Ian and Janet were two of the founding directors and because we had previously worked successfully together it seemed like a great fit. My first role at New Era IT was to initiate Direct Marketing which was a departure from usual policy and required the lifting of the company profile via direct mail shots. However New Era IT was keen not to be portrayed as a company of “box-droppers” so we re-shifted the focus back to relationship development with client schools and “friend-get-friend” with non-client schools. The advent of BYOD seemed to provide an interesting opportunity and potentially a significant new source of revenue. As part of my marketing role, we developed a website called “Mobilise Me” which gave schools, students and parent communities a new trusted avenue for obtaining recommended and appropriate student devices at premium prices. As it has turned out, relationships with 3rd party providers have provided a successful new direction for our BYOD services. I have now gone back to my knitting as a Business Development Manager for New Era Technology with my role now predominantly involved in acquiring new clients, often via long-standing relationships nationwide but particularly in Te Tai Tokerau, Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.

2.

The evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

in education has been constant and demanding. Over time, schools have spent considerable energy and resources integrating emerging digital technologies to improve learning outcomes for their students. Ultimately it is impossible to anticipate all of the burgeoning trends occurring in e-learning and as time has progressed we have seen the necessity for collaboration among educators and often, the outsourcing of expert advice. Outsourcing of technical support to companies such as New Era Technology is far preferable, in my opinion, to having Help Desk type support provided by trained teachers, particularly by senior staff even if ICT happens to be their hobby! New Era has the capacity, capability and

experience to provide a Total ICT Solution for Education which is better and less expensive than using schools’ own internal resource.

4.

As seen in question 2, I have worked in a variety of roles but none as long as my time at New Era. Factors that have contributed to my length of service at New Era include job satisfaction and fulfillment but the overriding factors that have given me longevity at NE are leadership and teamwork. New Era has been blessed with outstanding leadership during my time with the company. This leadership in turn has generated a team with outstanding values and empathy for each other, and also a team with warm and loyal relationships within our education client base. New Era Tech has also shown faith in me personally. 5 years ago I approached management and requested that I shift my place of residence from Auckland to Kerikeri. This shift was agreed to but with the element of risk that it mightn’t make much sense commercially moving from an environment with large urban schools to communities with small rural roll numbers. However, motivated as I was to repay the company’s faith, we have advanced from 2 client schools in Te Tai Tokerau five years ago to 70x client kura today in Northland. (Plus a few others around the country too.) Now that’s leadership and that’s teamwork!

5.

My spare time is very whanau-based. I have recently become a grandfather for the first time (Stevie Aroha) and we have another mokopuna due in August. When possible, I love a round of golf or a spot of fishing in the Kerikeri Inlet and I’m a sports nut in general so I’m never far away when the All Blacks or the Black Caps are playing.

6.

I was only ever a school principal / tumuaki for six or seven years but if I was to give leadership advice to principals today it would be to surround yourself with outstanding people. (He tangata, he tangata, he tangata!) There are a few schools that I can identify that have become virtual nurseries for principals. To me, that speaks wonders of the incumbent principals who I believe have buried their egos and given their DPs, APs and senior staff the chance to shine so that they in turn can go on to new possibilities. How wonderful is it when prospective leaders have already been given the chance to meet challenges, make decisions, enjoy success, embrace failure and really feel the responsibility that school leaders must “own” in encouraging student and teacher achievement.

The New Era whanau past and present all wish John the very best in his retirement.
