Thanks to the National Park Authority and Forestry Commission for letting us run through the most beautiful parts of the New Forest, making it one of the most diverse and breathtaking courses around. Also, New Park Showground Society for hosting the event and the local residents for their patience and support. We thank you all. Back in 1982 the original committee built this event and laid the foundations to allow the event to become what it is today. We are incredibly grateful for the support and time they continue to give us. Without the help of everyone mentioned and more, we wouldn’t be able to run this fantastic event and have it continue to grow, inspire and help the local communities become healthier and active.

THE NEW

FOREST Originally named ‘The Royal Forest’, William the Conqueror predominately used the area for deer hunting. In 1698 the commoner’s rights were confirmed and The New Forest became a source of timber for the Royal Navy. Later on, 4,000 oak trees were lost in the great storm of 1703.

3,500 ponies, 3,000 cattle and 2,500 deer on estimate roam free within the New Forest including a large number of donkeys, pigs and sheep. The New Forest also has 26 miles of coastline making it one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the country.

It wasn’t until 1808 that there was an act for the increase in size and preservation of the New Forest. In 1851 the Deer Removal Act was put in place to safeguard the livestock in the 10,000 acre New Forest. The Act of destruction was ordered by the Crown which was the first formal recognition that there was no longer interest in Deer. Finally in 1871, it was ruled by The House Of Commons that there was to be no more felling of trees. This was brought on by widespread complaints by Commoners and increasing concern regarding the number of trees as the demand for oak declined. As of 2005, roughly 90% of the New Forest is still owned by the Crown. The Crown lands have been managed by the Forestry Commission since 1923 and most of the Crown lands now fall inside the new National Park.

The New Forest now covers approximately 300sq miles making it the largest contiguous area of unsown vegetation in lowland Britain stretching across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. Pipers Wait, near Nomansland, at 129 metres (423 feet) is the summit of The New Forest. This vast and beautiful forest holds a population of 178,000 people, of which 34,000 live in the National Park. 8

LISA HOPKINS

KEN FOWLERS

40 year old Lisa took it upon herself to get fit and challenge herself, when she realised one day she needed to make a change. She considered herself very unfit and overweight so decided to eat healthily and work out.

Who is Ken?

Ken’s Running History

A 50 year old local air traffic controller with a keen interest in sailing, cycling and fundraising for cancer related charities.

Although Ken has completed sailing and cycling challenges, running has never been his forte.

NEVER SAY NEVER As a wife, mother of 7 and grandmother of 4, Lisa’s priorities changed. Alongside this, she set up a new cleaning company ‘Cleaning Angels UK’ which gave her further distractions from getting fit. When Lisa hit 40, she decided to make a change. She wasn’t happy within and wanted to focus on herself. After entering a 10k in Bournemouth, she was determined to finish, and to her amazement, she did! After this, confidence grew inside her to enter the New Forest Half Marathon in 2015.

gave her the bug, so she entered the London Marathon 2016. Inspiration from the New Forest Marathon encouraged Lisa to train for the next step. After lots of training and determination, Lisa was ready to run the full distance. Running for Christchurch Macmillan, Lisa’s motivation was enhanced as so many people had backed her to run the event. All her hard work paid off as she finished her run in 4 hours and 14 minutes. Yes it was hard work, but was it worth it? Absolutely! “Now for some people that might not seem a big deal, but to me, that was the next best thing to having my 7 beautiful children.” She made so many people proud and proved that with a little determination and confidence within you, anything is possible. It was a huge achievement, and to this day, Lisa is still overwhelmed by emotions. “I would like to say to anyone that says I can’t run – YES YOU CAN! I was once that person saying I can’t do it and believe me, the feeling you have crossing the finish line is like no other” “Ignore what other people have to say, because it’s all about YOU and what YOU want to achieve.” Lisa has entered in this year’s New Forest Marathon. It is where she started her journey and a goal she is determined to complete. Her family and friends are incredibly proud of her. She’s made dramatic improvements to her health and mental well-being by having a little determination and inspiration. “Thank you for having such a beautiful venue that not only inspired me to run but to make my life a happier and healthier one.” From hardly training 3 years ago, Lisa tries to train 3 times a week alongside her busy work schedule and family life. After the New Forest Marathon, Lisa has set a new goal to complete a half-Iron Man or a Triathlon. Good Luck Lisa!

She was petrified on the day and kept telling herself that she couldn’t run 13 miles. But 2 hours 9 minutes later, she completed it! Feelings of elation and pride came over her. Lisa said “For someone that couldn’t run up the stairs to completing a half marathon in less than a year is a huge achievement for me.” She talked about the atmosphere and the scenery – it really helped her through the event. She heard the New Forest Marathon was a lovely run, and as it’s her local event it made sense to enter the beautiful run. Lisa hasn’t stopped yet though. The half marathon

RACE TO SCOTLAND What is he doing? Ken is running the New Forest Marathon 10k to get fit and raise awareness of his new fundraising plan. His aim is to fundraise over £50,000 by sailing single handed from Lands’ End to John O Groats – a 900 mile trip over 30 days of sailing. He will be attempting this epic journey in a dinghy no larger than two bathtubs. Ken hopes to become only the second person ever to complete this solo challenge. Both sailor and dinghy will be pushed to their limits as they traverse the rugged British coastline and open water crossings where the waves can be bigger than the dinghy! Ken has planned this epic journey in memory of his father and mother-in-law, who have unfortunately fallen victims of cancer. His father one of 6, passed away 25 years ago along with 4 of his siblings. The challenge is planned for May 2017, the 2 year anniversary of the loss of his mother-in-law.

Why is he doing it? This unfortunate history of cancer within Ken’s family has been his motivation and inspiration. Ken has completed many fundraising challenges over the years to raise money for cancer related charities including Cancer Research and Oakhaven Hospice. These include: • Cycling East to West across the United States - 4000 miles in total, camping throughout. • Sailing non-stop in a small dinghy around the Isle of Wight in a single day. • Cycling around New Zealand, Ireland, Wales & England. As a result of his fundraising sail around the Isle of Wight, Ken was awarded Gold Star of the Month from Yachts and Yachting Monthly magazine. He was voted runner up by the public in the annual “Achievement of the Year” awards, 2016.

Unpleasant school memories of wet and icy cross country tracks left Ken with bad experiences and a desire to stay away from running. However, in preparation for his Isle of Wight challenge, Ken started running as it was a great way to get fit during the dark winter months when sailing options were more limited. “Running really worked well for me because with a busy family life, it isn’t always easy to find time for exercise. I ran along the seafront at Mudeford looking across to the Needles and the Isle of Wight. This was a great motivator and helped me keep me focused on the upcoming challenge.” Ken will be surrounded by 5,000 runners with approximately 3,000 spectators waiting in the Race Village along with his boat that will be on display all day – a fantastic way to raise awareness of this excellent cause. Please help Ken in his aim to raise £50,000 in his “Race to Scotland” before May 2017. Ken is welcoming any help or assistance for his trip including sponsorship opportunities, equipment and donations. There are also branding opportunities on the boat, so have look and see where your logo would look best! Local boat company RS Sailing has already kindly pledged a boat for the trip, so if you are able to help in any way his contact details are as follows: Mob: (07963) 321642 Email:kenfmtb@gmail.com You can make a donation on his VirginGiving page. Just type in “Ken Fowler” or “Race To Scotland” on the Virgin Giving website: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving/ Whilst you’re out there enjoying your run, keep a look out and give your support for the runner wearing his sailing gear and buoyancy aid!

ESSENTIAL RACE INFORMATION

BEFORE LEAVING HOME Plan your journey. Make sure you know where you are going and the address of New Park Showground, Brockenhurst. The Postcode is SO42 7QH. Please remember that this is the New Forest and the roads in and out are single carriageway. We strongly advise you arrive 3 hours before your race start time. If arriving from the M27 we advise that you leave at junction 2 and follow signs to Lyndhurst. Alternatively approaching from Beaulieu or Lymington will provide a smoother entrance and save time as we expect traffic to be lighter from this direction. We have also created additional parking to cater for cars approaching from this direction. We recommend that you pick your race packs up on Friday between 4pm and 9pm or Saturday between 10am and 8pm. If you are not able to do this then make sure you leave additional time to register. Registration opens from 6am on race day and it located just inside the race village. Bring one kit bag that can be left at the Baggage Marquee whilst running (label supplied in Race Pack) with everything you require before and after your race. BEFORE YOUR RACE All running numbers must be attached to the front of your T-shirt/running vest using the safety pins supplied in your Race Pack. All running numbers MUST BE completed on the reverse with your emergency information. This is also your timing chip so it is essential you don’t forget this and this is not swapped with any other runners. There are no spares available and runners won’t be able to take part without their running number. If you are meeting family/friends afterwards, make arrangements of where you are going to meet them. Mobile signal can be weak in the forest! We have a Runner Meet and Greet Area numbered 1-5 in the finish area. To use the Baggage Marquee use the label that will be found in your Race Pack, attach to ONE bag that is securely zipped up and pass into the relevant section. When you finish, present yourself to the staff at the Baggage Marquee who will check your race number on your shirt and return your item. The Baggage Marquee is located behind the warm up arena.

THE

D N’T LIST Here are a few things not to do on Race Day: • Please don’t wee in gardens or public places, there are plenty of toilets in Race Village before the start! • Don’t set off too quickly! TRANSPORT Please allow plenty of time to access New Park Showground site due to the numbers travelling to the event. By Car: We have ample car parking (£3 per car) located a short walk from the Race Village. We strongly advise you take advantage of Pre paid car parking, which can be purchased from Registration when you collect your race packs. By Bike: If you intend to arrive by Bike, there is a large fence where you can lock your bike up just inside the race village by registration. Please note that you will need to bring your own lock. Drink sensibly according to the conditions and not too much during the race.

Rehydration is important when finishing your event, drink slowly rather than gulp large volumes very quickly.

Please ensure you are in position and in the start area 5 minutes before your race starts. A group warm up will be staged in the Your Physio Plan Warm Up Aarea before each event. You will then have a Race briefing.

Do not take anti-inflammatories before or during your event. Take paracetamol should you need painkillers, as always, seek medical advice where necessary.

COURSE INFORMATION Welcome to the 2016 New Forest Marathon, As you can see we have a new home and new courses. Whichever race you have entered it is key that you are aware of the following information. Please take time to read the following carefully. The Race Village will open at 6am and close at 6pm.

THE RACES

KEY DIRECTIONS

The full marathon is a certified multi terrain race. It has been officially measured by an accredited course measurer and is certified as not less than the title distance.

At the end of the race ALL RUNNERS will re-enter the showground through the bottom gate.

The Full, Half, 10k and 5k have all been officially measured by Ordinance Survey to guarantee accuracy.

The FULL MARATHON, 10k and 5k runners must enter the second gate taking the shorter route as shown by the green arrows below:

All 4 courses are licensed by UK Athletics.

FINDING YOUR WAY All races start and finish at the start/finish bridge shown on the course map.

All runners complete the course when they pass under the bridge at the end of the start and finish straight.

HAZARDS The courses comprise of a mixture of compact gravel tracks and roads which are lovely to run on. However, you need to remember that you are running through the New Forest National Park and therefore you will be sharing the forest with all sorts of wildlife such as ponies and deer. If you come across any of these please be respectful and give them a wide berth, do not touch or feed the animals, or marshals!

or use audio devices during the race for your own safety, especially on road sections. However, we endorse the use of Aftershokz as this provides a safe solution allowing participants to hear their surroundings as well as their music. In 2016 although NOT RECOMMENDED, there will be no disqualification for use of audio devices’.

There are many natural hazards such as tree roots, branches and the occasional puddle or ford. When you approach these if you want to keep your feet dry then use the bridges provided or hop over them.

CHIP TIMING Your running number contains your race chip, please ensure that this is safety pinned to your top using the pins included in your race pack. The chip will automatically pick you up as you pass the start and finish line. At the end of the race you are free to take your chipped race number home with you as a memento of the day. You will receive a text with your result at the end of the race if a mobile number has been supplied at time of booking. Full race results will available on chipresults.co.uk

Parts of the course are narrower than others so please be aware of runners in front and behind you and adjust your position accordingly.

MARSHALS Many of the marshals are volunteers without them the event would not be possible. They are there for your safety and to enhance your experience. Please be polite to them and follow their advice.

Each race is colour coded using the following system: Full,10k and 5k enter second gate

HOW TO GET TO THE START LINE Runners can use the Your Physio Plan warm up and cool down zone at any time. Approximately 20 minutes prior to your race you will be called to the warm up stage for a group warm up to get you ready for your race. You will then be asked to make your way down the start channel and find a suitable place on the start line. During this time a race briefing will take place. Runners are encouraged to pick a start point where they will be with other runners of a similar speed. We have separated the start area into rapid paced runners, moderate paced runners and leisurely paced runners.

please report to the nearest marshal or drinks station who will make a note of your race number and ensure you get back to the race village safely. Please do not leave the course without notifying an official.

SLOW RUNNERS Our event only has priority over the roads until 3.30pm, this will allow all runners plenty of time to complete the course. If you are still on the course after this time you must stop and report to the nearest marshal who will escort you onto the sweep bus.

WALKING We understand that some runners may wish to walk part of the course, if this is the case, please KEEP TO THE SIDE so you do not become an obstacle for faster runners to dodge around.

WHAT TO DO AFTER CROSSING THE LINE When you finish the race you will be directed into the finishing zone where you can collect your well earned medal and goodie bag as well as a banana from Fyffes and a bottle of water. This bottle can be refilled as many times as you like from the many water stations around the race village. Your priority after finishing is to get warm and re hydrate. 1 BOTTLE PER PERSON! Please use the bins provided to dispose of any rubbish. Once you have collected your medal and goodie bag you should re enter the cool down zone that will include 20 physiotherapists providing free treatment for tired legs! You can collect your bag from the baggage tent at any time.

COUNT DOWN TO START Once you are at the start line you will be given a count down to start. The race starts on the hooter, however your chip time will not start until you physically cross the line. This year the Half and 10k will go out in waves to ease congestion on the first part of the race and allow runners space to find a good rhythm. All runners will be placed based on their chip time so there is no rush to get over the line.

DROPPING OUT There will be sweep vehicles following the half and full marathon, if you feel you can not make it around the course

MEETING POINTS There are a number of meeting points numbered 1-5 positioned near the baggage tent allowing easy methods to find your friends or family.

POST RACE ENTERTAINMENT There’s plenty to do in the race village including bands performing on the main stage, a picnic area, lots of food and drink outlets including a bar, an activity area and an abundance of trader stalls to look around. The Race Village is open until 6pm so please take your time and enjoy a well-earned break after your race. 15

The timber produced in the forest was extremely valuable to the nation, for centuries it was used for ship building for the Navy. Timber production is now centred on nearly 9,000 hectares which are enclosed for grazing animals. These woodlands produce about 50,000m3 of timber each year. Timber operations are potentially dangerous to visitors so the Forestry Commission displays signs and diversions in order to avoid danger and prevent accidents. Although timber is an important economic output, the Forestry Commission aims to deliver a multi-purpose forest. Other key values include managing enclosures alongside timber production, conservation and recreation within the forest. All forestry operations are carefully planned with wildlife rangers and recreational rangers on any conservation or access issues. For example, work is planned to avoid disturbance of natural habitats and animals on busy cycling routes in busy holiday periods.

VERDERERS The Verderers Court is a statutory body set up under the New Forest Act of 1877, to share the management and protection of the New Forest. The Verderers are responsible for maintaining a balance over development of the New Forest and protecting the wildlife and beauty of the area. The Verderers chief objective is looking after the traditional farming practices of the area and ensuring high standards of animal welfare.

FORESTRY COMMISSION Habitats have been created within the New Forest that are not natural but result from thousands of years of man’s intervention and management. Forest lawns, valley mires, heathland and Ancient and Ornamental woodlands are controlled by the Forestry Commission through burning, gorse cutting and bracken harvesting as well as ongoing bridge maintenance. Valley restoration and invasive species removal, such as rhododendron, is also managed regularly. By burning and cutting gorse and heather from November through March, this encourages new growth benefiting a variety of flora and fauna providing food for the commoning stock. It also creates a mosaic of different aged habitats and forms effective fire breaks. “We will make sure that every year the land and forests we care for become even more special places for wildlife to live, for people to enjoy and for businesses to thrive.” The Forestry Commissions aims are to: ffer opportunities for people to enjoy their •O woodlands •P rotect and enhance its natural ecosystems for the benefit of wildlife •D eliver economic growth by supporting local businesses and rural employment.

COMMONERS DEFENCE ASSOCIATION (CDA)

WHO IS THE CDA AND WHAT DO THEY DO? The Act of 1877 allowed two thirds of the forest to be set aside for Commoners. A Commoner is someone who occupies land or property which gives them privileges known as ‘rights of common’. This includes rights such as grazing stock on the open forest. Founded in 1909 due to the increasing conflict between spreading urban populations around and into the New Forest, the CDA was set up to support the rights of the Commoners.

The aims of the CDA are to: • Promote and safeguard the interest of the Commoners • Co-operate with the Verderers in the maintenance of the perimeter fencing the New Forest • Investigate and support any claim against any member of the Association for compensation in respect to the death or injury of an animal in the Forest. 21

NAOMI

100 MARATHONS Naomi Bennett From a run to work, to 100 Marathons – Read about Naomi’s incredible 10 year, 100 Marathon path that is finishing at the New Forest Marathon 2016.

“There’s always a helping hand or a word of encouragement from fellow runners. It’s a real community. My Dad tells me he’s proud of me but that “I should remember my age”!!!

Who is Naomi? “I’m Naomi Bennett, a 55 year old fitness instructor. I teach fitness classes, I’m a personal trainer and a UK Athletics Coach. I have my own running group in Bournemouth called ‘Bourne Runners’ where I coach beginner and intermediate runners. A lot of my clients are now running marathons and races, something I am immensely proud about.”

“The incredible thing about marathons is running through the finish line and thinking, “I did it”. Even through the hardest miles, you would never say “I wish I hadn’t”, the feeling of achievement is unparalleled.”

What are you doing and why? “I didn’t set out to run 100 marathons, but then as then numbers added up, I decided to make ‘The Athens Classic Marathon’ my 50th. ‘The Athens Classic Marathon’ was the first ever marathon to have been run. Legend has it that a Greek soldier, Pheidippides, ran from The Battle of Marathon in 490BC to Athens in order to relay the news of their victory. On reaching Athens his only words were “We were Victorious” then he collapsed & died from exhaustion. The marathon still follows this original route. After that I decided to challenge myself to complete 100 marathons in less than 10 years from my first – Paris in April 2007.” When did you start running? “I started running when I was 46. I’d never really run before. One day I was arriving for work at The Littledown Centre, a colleague was running up the slope, I asked him how far he had run, he said “just from home, about 5 miles.” I couldn’t imagine even running a mile but he said I could, and encouraged me to try, and so I started. Previously I had only run a little on a treadmill. I then entered The Great South Run, a 10 mile road race a couple of months later and ran it in 1 hour 27. It was a great experience, lovely people, wonderful support and encouragement from fellow runners and from the thousands of spectators along the route. That was it – I joined my first running club and entered more races!!” What is the best thing about running? “Pretty much everything! Apart from the obvious health and wellbeing benefits, there’s my dog, Dudley, a 2 year old golden retriever, who runs with me up to 10 miles off road. Also, all of my friends who run, (I think the others have given up on me!!) the lovely people I meet and the places I go to - most of which I would never have visited were it not for running. I have run marathons in Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, New York, Switzerland, China, Nicaragua, South Africa, Barcelona, Rome, Athens, Malaga, Wales and 6 London marathons. “Not to mention the “license to eat” – especially post marathon!!

22

What is your favorite running memory so far? “My biggest accomplishment was the Ometepe Volcano Ultra Marathon (50K). Ometepe is an island formed by 2 volcanos rising from Lake Nicaragua in the republic of Nicaragua, Central America, north of Costa Rica. We set off in the pitch black, ran up, climbed down inside and up over the other side of the volcano, then ran more than 20 miles around the base. The temperatures were up to 40 degrees and the roads were really just piles of rock! I was carrying a 2 and a half litre water pack. My time for 50K was just under 10.5 hours; it was the hardest thing I have ever done. The most fun I’ve had running a marathon is the Medoc Marathon (West France just north of Bordeaux). Runners must wear fancy dress and the course goes through, and stops at, numerous vineyards who all provide us with copious amounts of wine and food! There are live bands, fresh grilled steak, chips, champagne and oysters en route. Also face painting, ice lollies and a free bar for those who can drink any more at the end! I expect by the time I cross the finishing line at the New Forest Marathon on September 11th, my emotions will be running high! Hopefully it will cap off an amazing journey. Why have you decided to finish at the New Forest Marathon? The New Forest marathon makes a good 100th venue for me. It’s an event that has races of different distances so my friends and customers can all take part at their own level if they chose to. Many are running and we hope to be able to cross the line together. Aside from this the location is beautiful and it’s local to where I live. I have over 60 friends and family coming to support, so the seating area with entertainment is perfect for our post run party and the obligatory 100 marathon cake!! If you see Naomi, give her a massive cheer and congratulate her on making it to 100 Marathons in 10 years. She will be wearing number 100 on a black “Race to 100 marathons” top. If you’re interested in running at any level, check out Naomi’s Bourne Runners: www.bournerunners.com Facebook – Bourne Runners Its open to everyone whatever their running ability “Bourne Runners - Getting Bournemouth Running”

MARATHON RECOVERY People underestimate the importance of effective post-marathon care. Alongside comfort, correct procedure can significantly reduce injury risk both short and long term. Progressive recovery can actually help to improve future events so that your PR improves race after race and keeps you training with minimal downtime. A marathon is no easy feat for the body. Each of your systems undergoes a period of prolonged stress and some under maximum intensity. One of the first things to note is your immediate post-race recovery. Don’t just sit down and rest – if you do this, you won’t be getting back up in a hurry! Walk for 15-20 mins gently to encourage a normal blood flow through the body, give everything a chance to normalise. Your next step is looking to hydration and diet. Immediately post-race you won’t be in the mood for a big meal, so try to take on a balanced carbohydrate and protein shake, nuts, fruits or gels or replenish immediate

muscle glycogen stores and protein synthesis. If you crave something, let your body have it. You need to try and continue with healthy eating over the next few days to weeks, particularly high protein foods [iron rich is another positive] to aid muscle recovery. Rehydrating allows your cells to more efficiently transport nutrients around the body, and again is key for glycogen synthesis.

“If you crave something, let your body have it. You need to try and continue with healthy eating over the next few days and weeks, particularly high protein foods [iron rich is another positive] to aid muscle recovery.”

Compression garments can also help to improve blood flow to recovering muscles, in combination with ice baths or wraps to slow cell metabolism and decrease extended tissue damage.

THE COMMUNITY FUND

sponsored by NEW FOREST M A R AT H N COMMUNITY FUND

It is estimated that 62% of the adult population of Hampshire is overweight and obese and rates of obesity and severe obesity are predicted to rise. For the County of Hampshire, the estimated cost last year of managing obesity alone was £333.8 million. The Community Fund focuses primarily on helping groups and communities by encouraging and inspiring people to get physically active. Over 100 local communities and activity causes from the New Forest area have all benefited from over £1.25 million of donations from New Forest Marathon in the last 32 years! The fund is managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation and The New Forest Marathon Committee. Local groups and organisations can apply to the fund through a process where the applications are, evaluated and monitored to ensure grants are spent appropriately. With thanks to ABP Southampton, all donations are matched in 2016. This means your donations will be doubled! This will allow us to make an amazing difference to so many people. So please give generously!

The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy How much: £275 Who: Students, parents and teachers How: Managed Water Station The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy (FCRT) is an Independent Specialist Provider of further education. Its mission is to enable horse-motivated young people with learning difficulties and disabilities, complex physical disabilities and those from deprived inner city areas, to relate more successfully to others and to have greater and more appropriate control over their own lives. The FCRT works with young people’s motivation for horses and harness this to enhance co-operation, communication and concentration. This use of horses, to enable young people learn and develop, is the core of our work. It is the reason for the FCRT’s existence and has been the mission since the foundation of the work in 1976. The FCRT young people always feel empowered after assisting at such a great community event and this helps them to build their confidence and self-esteem in a public setting. The FCRT was delighted to receive a wonderful donation from the Community. It was decided that this money would be used to purchase new goal posts for the young people to play football when they are home in the evenings and weekends. The new equipment has been used nearly every day so far, which has helped develop their fitness, co-ordination and hone their football skills. The FCRT encourages its young people to participate in local activities, such as boxercise and keep fit classes; some of them are active members of the local rugby club. The FCRT hopes to have more sporting equipment on site, such as mountain biking gear, specialist vaulting equipment (gymnastics on horseback), GPS and navigation equipment for hiking & cycling, to enable their young people to continue to keep active and stay fit. More information about FCRT can be found at: http://www.fortunecentre.org/

Milford Brownies How much: £275 Who: 24 girls aged 7-10 How: Water Station The Milford Brownies offer experiences to their girls designed to get them outdoors, active and develop their self-esteem and confidence in a variety of settings. By arranging activities such as kayaking, raft building and outdoor games, the girls are encouraged to get as active as possible. On top of this, group outings such as Go Ape and sailing are made available to the girls making such activities financially accessible. Rebecca, Leader of 1st Milford on Sea Brownies said “The group love being involved in the New Forest Marathon, it enables our girls to truly ’serve the Queen and my Community’- a part of their threefold Promise which provides a common standard within which all members of Girl guiding strive to live their lives – in a practical way. “In addition the Community Fund enables us to offer some fabulous opportunities to our girls; opportunities which they might not otherwise have or choose to partake in.” The Community Fund has helped the Brownies buy camp beds and give the girls the opportunity to try new outdoor activities. This year the Community Fund is helping the group attend the Flame International Camp where a range of outdoor and adventurous activities are offered to all the girls in order for them to develop and learn skills. 34

Hordle Guides How Much: £275 Who: Girls aged 10-14 How: Water Station The Hordle Guides are about teaching the girls to work in teams and on their own by challenging themselves in as much outdoor activity as possible. Such activities include rounders, summer camps, Geo Caching and learning new sports such as Stand-up Paddle Boarding. The Community Fund has helped the girls attend international camps and pay for the Stand-up Paddle Boarding. As the girls live so close to the Lymington Sea Water Baths, watersports, safety and responsibility can be taught so confidence and experience can be improved. The Guides aim to develop on their skills learnt and take the girls out into the sea after the initial taster sessions. The Guides are planning to raise money for an international trip to a Guiding Centre in Switzerland in the future, along with Satalite Navigation Equipment to do Geo Caching, something the guides take a huge interest in. The Group is 23 guides strong with 3 leaders and parents helping each week.

They take part in regular fitness and sport activities such as sponsored walks, DofE expeditions, training walks and activities at summer camps. Most recently, the Guides just completed a walking weekend of the Brecon Beacons. Lymington Guides used the New Forest Marathon to get the girls interested in running and increase their fitness as training is required for their challenges. The Community Fund money is being put towards a Three Peaks Challenge in August and a trek of the Annapurna Trail in Nepal in 2017. Giving girls the opportunity to take part in such trips allows them to build on their confidence and discover their potential through experiencing different cultures, landscapes and ways of living while still encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Lyminton Sea Scouts also take part in regular regattas throughout the summer where they look to continue their ever growing success. The Community Fund will be put towards replacement of their safety RIB fund, allowing the Scouts and Explorers aged 10-16 to spend the summer months gaining experience in a wide range of sailing and pulling activities. We manage one of the water stations and provide much needed support to the runners not just by giving water. The scouts cheer the runners and give them the encouragement to continue.” The Community Fund has helped the scout group put a large emphasis on camping and adventure activities, the group has to maintain their tents which are now over 40 years old. The scouts prefer the old, traditional tents to the new lightweight ones so they have to be repaired and maintained to give the scouts the best experience possible. Other activities include performing at the Christchurch Priory to celebrate the life of St George and various fundraising activities to maintaining the scout hut. The group is always looking for new ways to raise money including an annual plant sale. New members are always welcome, including volunteer leaders. 36

Event Management, the New Forest Marathon couldn’t be a better place to develop my skills. The most enjoyable thing about being part of #NFM2016 is being able to see the impact the event has on the local community. The New Forest Marathon Community Fund allows local communities to benefit from helping us one day a year. It helps fund projects that encourage physical activity across the local area. Further

information can be found in the magazine and on the New Forest Marathon website. Putting together this magazine has been an incredibly fulfilling and a challenging task. Researching inspirational stories and the local area has really enlightened me on the diverse people entering and the huge amount of local stakeholders within the New Forest. I hope you enjoy the magazine and your training has gone to plan. It’s going to be one fantastic day, so bring the family and enjoy the atmosphere.
