In great weather which went from overcast and breezy to gloriously sunny, 5,000 people of all ages and abilities participated in six different routes – a woodland walk, children’s race, 5k, 10k, half marathon and the full 26.2-mile marathon. Hundreds of supporters lined the track by the start / finish line at the New Park showground, Brockenhurst to cheer runners on. At the finishs they were presented with well-deserved medals which featured a ribbon in the same colour as the event they ran in. Over its history the marathon has raised over £1.25m for more than 100 local good causes and community groups. Since 2014 it has been organised by ORA Events Ltd and collected £50,000 for 60 groups in two years. Chris Farr from ORA Events said it had been the biggest and best day to date since they took over the running of the event in 2014.

“It‘s a pleasure to be standing up here from four years ago when the event didn’t run. It’s taken many hours and sleepless nights to get here.” “Of course it was helped by the fact we had really nice weather,” he said. “It was sunny and that was fantastic for the runners and the show itself – for the entertainment on the stages and the traders and volunteers. “From a runner’s perspective we know most of them love the course and above all the culture of the event. They know it is really friendly and warm, they’ll be going through lovely areas such as Sway, Brockenhurst and Rhinefield.” He revealed that more than 2,000 people who had applied to run the 2018 event could not because it was oversubscribed, and said applications

“The aim has always been to have an event where the two go hand-in-hand – as a community event that helps charities.” for the 2019 event next September were already “going very strong”. “The event seems to be getting bigger and better, with a lot more profile,” said Chris. “This year the BBC and ITV covered it on the day and we are getting bigger companies wanting to partner with us, which is great going in to the future for our community fund. “The aim has always been to have an event where the two go hand-in-hand – as a community event that helps charities.” Speaking to the crowds on the warmup stage on Sunday, Andy Daish from ORA Events Ltd, said: “It‘s a pleasure to be standing up here from four years ago when the event didn’t run. It’s taken many hours and sleepless nights to get here.” With the support of main sponsors’ Garmin, the organisers were able to pay for reflective ink to be put into the New Forest Marathon t-shirts given to participants. These will help keep them safe in the winter months, Andy added. “We are in the New Forest. It’s an ever changing environment,” he said. “The gates opened at 5am this morning to get deer out of the way – it’s a wild animals’ backyard. “If you see New Forest ponies give them a little bit of space.” He added anybody seen dropping rubbish would be automatically disqualified. Competitors tackled a mix of terrains including wooded and muddy areas, and groups benefiting from the money raised at the marathon have included guides, brownies, scouts, air cadets and Hampshire Search and Rescue. There were also trade and charity stands, food stalls and live music in the race village.

OUR years ago Rory, who was left profoundly deaf and epileptic by meningitis as a child, ran the London marathon. Six months later he suffered a stroke which left him paralysed down one side, but, said his mum Jennie, he totally refused to accept it.

“he has shown everyone just how determined and strong and he is.” During his recovery from hemiplegic migraine he set himself a goal of running 12 marathons / half

marathons in 12 months to raise money in memory of his sister Baylea who died from spina bifida, starting and finishing at the New Forest Marathon. A year on, Rory has completed seven marathons (including Paris and London in the same month), a 43-mile Ultra, 30-mile solo race, a half marathon triathlon and Endure

24 (100-miles solo). Sunday’s event will be the final one of his challenge and cheering him on will be Jennie, her husband, her mother, Rory’s wife and their three children. Jennie said: “He has shown sheer grit and determination throughout his life to overcome barriers. “His original goal seemed totally out of reach, then his goal to run 12 marathons/half marathons seemed impossible, but he has shown everyone just how determined and strong and positive he is.”

BROCKENHURST man took on the New Forest event to kick-off an incredible challenge in which he will run 21 marathons in 21 days to raise £100,000 for a children’s charity. Steve Radjen will take on a series of courses in and around the New Forest on behalf of Naomi House and Jacks Place, which provide individualised care and much needed respite and support for families. It needs £8m per year to deliver the service. Asked why he would put himself through the arduous challenge, which will see him do over 550 miles – the same distance as Brockenhurst to the middle of Switzerland – Steve replied: “From the first day I visited Naomi House I knew I wanted to do as much as I could to help raise money for this incredible charity. “The work they do to help and support the children and families and the care they deliver is amazing. I consider myself lucky enough to have two healthy daughters and I think we all have a social responsibility to help others in our community that are not as fortunate. “I have two healthy children and am very lucky, but it’s as the saying goes ‘there but for the grace of God go I’… it’s a charity that is amazingly close to my heart as they do amazing work for people that are not so lucky,” he added. “Life in general pales into

insignificance when you see what some of these families go through and the charity itself is celebrating its 21st birthday so I wanted to do something really big for it – and this seemed like a good idea at the time!”

“From the first day I visited Naomi House I knew I wanted to do as much as I could to help raise money for this incredible charity.” Incredibly, because he works in London and catches the 5.30am train to the capital every weekday, Steve trained for the event by getting up at 2am on some mornings to go for a three-hour run! “My wife and daughters have been saying I must be mad and to be honest I do think this could be my final charity hurrah. I’m 56 years-old now and there’s only so much I can put my body – and my wife Gerry – through!” Steve, has supported Naomi House and Jacksplace in a business sense and personally for 14 years. In 2013 he was

invited to join the Board of Trustees, a position that he still holds today. Steve only took up marathon running at the age of 42, he says in order “not to become a fat dad”. In the 14 years since he has completed 10 full distance events and four ultra-marathons – including the toughest footrace in the world, the Marathon Des Sables, where he raised £80,000. “The des Sables was brutal, it really was. There were conditions that you can’t even begin to understand. But this will be different and tougher because it is more prolonged – the saving grace is that I have the comfort of home to go to and my own bed at the end of every day!” he added. “Also, every day I will have someone with me as support; either a runner, a cyclist or, in the case of the second day, a horse rider! I have a great support network behind me, including medics and a nutritionist, and am just looking to go steady all the way round. “On 21st September I shall finish this challenge by running through the front gates of Naomi House and I’m looking forward to that. I am also doing a black tie gala at Brockenhurst on 6th October for 420 people and hope that will enable me to get to my fundraising target,” he added.

In doing so they were hoping to raise £3,000 towards an operation needed by the toddler daughter of a family friend, who has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. The op, which costs in the region of £40,000 and is not available on the NHS, is called selective

dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) and would give the little girl – called Maeve – the best chance of walking on her own. “None of us can know what the future holds for Maeve, but together we can support her, to put one foot in front of the other, step by step, day by day, so that we she can ultimately fulfil her potential to be as mobile as possible,” the Oxfordshire GP said.

LENYS Waters (70), who has lost her hair as a result of intensive chemotherapy she is currently undergoing for a type of ovarian cancer, donned a green wig for her fourth 10k. Glenys from Highcliffe was first diagnosed in August 2015 and has twice battled the disease. It has returned now. She said she would be walking the route this time and added: “My specialist said to me that running is the best form of exercise because it keeps you fit.”

Silvia, who works in marketing, chose the charity after the death of a close friend who suffered from mental health problems. “It’s really important to get the message out there and to do whatever you can to help, especially with mental health becoming such a widespread issue,” she said. Both 24 and from Southampton, Owen finished the half distance in four minutes under two hours, while Silvia was just over half-an-hour behind.

NE of the most moving stories at the 2018 Marathon concerned bowel cancer survivor Rebecca Langley, who completed her first ever half marathon to raise money for the very intensive care unit that saved her life in 2017. The 32-year-old from Guildford, who ran the 10km New Forest event two years ago, had major surgery to remove four tumours and her colon after her cancer diagnosis in April last year. It left her with a permanent stoma and she underwent chemotherapy, but suffered two serious seizures brought on by her medication and was rushed to the Royal Surrey Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“It’s overwhelming to be honest. I don’t think it’s actually sunk in that I’ve done it.”

There she had four cardiac arrests, suffered broken ribs, sternum and two fractured vertebrae and her family were told the outlook was not good. However, she fought hard. After a week she was transferred onto a normal ward

and discharged 10 days later. While in hospital she resolved to herself she would walk within a year, and by September had jogged her first kilometre. She gradually built up her distances, finished a sprint distance triathlon in April and then vowed to do the New Forest half distance – a major undertaking for someone who had gone through so much – to help raise £1,000 for the ICU unit that treated her. Elated at the finish line to finish what she called a “life dream”, she told the A&T that having a stoma bag and a specially designed racing suit by Vanilla Blush boosted her run, adding: “Because of what I’ve gone through it makes things like this so hard. “The second half was really, really hard, as was the last mile round the field, but I just thought I’ve got to get through this. Plus the support you get from people staying on to cheer you on and runners already finished is absolutely amazing. “It’s overwhelming to be honest. I don’t think it’s actually sunk in that I’ve done it. I would love to say I’d do another half distance but I do not think I’ve got it in me to be honest. I’ll definitely be back next year, but it’s more likely to be a 10k!” Her tearful mother Glynis was so proud she could barely speak. Rebecca said she was treating the pair to a stone baked pizza or hog roast to celebrate, adding: “This really gives me a sense of achievement when I felt like I’ve lost everything else.”

RICKET fanatic Rob Cross donned his whites, batting gloves and carried a willow around with him as he ran the half marathon on behalf of two charities.

With the goal of running 18 events situated in the UK counties with a professional cricket playing side, Rob is bidding to raise £10,000 to be split between Mind and Chance to Shine.

The New Forest event was the 10th the Londoner has completed, meaning he is now over halfway through the challenge, which he will complete by doing the 2019 London Marathon in full cricketing batting gear, pads and helmet included. “This challenge is not about speed for me, but rather about endurance and the mental battle for me to continue with each half-marathon in different terrains and weather conditions over 14 months,” Rob, who did a humorous pitch report for his Twitter followers before the New Forest event, said.

Hannah Storm, who runs a charity for journalists who work in war zones and works abroad a lot, said she loved coming back to club because of its warmth. “That’s the best thing about this club – it doesn’t matter if you’re a two-hour or five-hour marathon runner, it’s all about supporting and encouraging people. You can make friends and develop and challenge yourself and it’s great fun too.” Her view was shared by primary school teacher Amy Cazneaux (30), and Helen Lamb, who was back running having had a break from it after falling and dislocating her shoulder during a previous event. “It’s very welcoming here, irrespective of age, ability, shape or size,” Helen, a carriage driver, said. “I got into it because a friend is a running coach, Amy added. “I love it and I’m just aiming to finish today.”
