Thousands run in the sun THIS year’s New Forest Marathon has been hailed a huge success after more than 4,000 runners took part in the various events designed to suit all ages and abilities. Held in brilliant sunshine, the new routes for the full and half marathons, the Advertiser and Times 10k and the 5k races, which kept largely to Forest tracks, proved a big hit with participants and local residents. New parking arrangements meant there were few delays getting into the race village at New Park in Brockenhurst where runners and their families and friends enjoyed live music and an array of food and drink stalls. The three main races were started by former Saints player Francis Benali (pictured), who also took part in the A&T 10k as he prepares for his Big Race challenge to run and cycle between all 44 Premier League and Championship grounds to raise £1m for Cancer Research. The winner of the full marathon was Peter Thompson of Bournemouth Athletics Club who finished in a time of 2.39.35. The 32-year-old said he was delighted after finishing second last year. “It’s been a great event and so well organised,” he said.

The fastest woman was Charlotte Collyer of Vegan Runners who recorded a time of 3.15.57. The half marathon was won by Graham Breen, in a time of 1.17.11, while the top woman was Megan de Silva in 1.21.40. First home in the A&T 10k was Daniel Baker in 39.24, and the top woman was Megan Ingle in 45.23. The 5k honours went to Tre-

The 6k woodland walk attracted 53 participants, and in the afternoon dozens of toddlers and children took part in the Ineos-sponsored children’s races. But we had to get it right.” He added: “In the end everything went really well and it has been a great day. “It’s been a real community event because we couldn’t have done it without the support and help of so many people. “We listened to the feedback from last year, particularly about the routes and the access to the site, and everyone seems very happy with the changes we have made.” Chris said he hoped the Marathon Community Fund, which gives out grants to groups that help with the event, should top £15,000 with the match-funding pledged by Southampton Port operators ABP. “We always need more help so if any groups would like to get involved we would love to hear from them and hopefully we can help them financially through the community fund,” he explained. The tree-lined race courses helped shelter the runners from the sun and the on-site ambulance service only reported a couple of incidents of people needing treatment.

THE FASTEST WOMEN IN THE NEW FOREST CHARLOTTE COLLYER (35) WAS THE FIRST LADY TO FINISH THE FULL MARATHON, WITH A TIME OF 3:15. Charlotte, from Bournemouth, runs with the Vegan Runners and only signed up for the event a week beforehand “I wanted to do it because it’s a flat course!” Charlotte told the A&T. “It’s so beautiful, it keeps you going.”

LYMINGTON ATHLETES’ CAMILLE KING, FRESH FROM HER ECHAPPEE BELLE 47KM RACE IN THE ALPS, WON THE WOMEN’S 5KM RACE IN A TIME OF 24 MINUTES 36 SECONDS. The mother-of-three from Dibden Purlieu also came 7th overall. She is an experienced runner, who regularly competes in ultra-distance races. She said: “The New Forest marathon is a really great local event and I was keen to run one of their races again this year. THE widow of a firefighter who lost his life in a Southampton tower block fire in 2010 was joined by friends and family to complete the New Forest half marathon in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity. Carla Shears, along with Kate Ball, Mark Phillip, Carrie Briggs Chris Wright and Rob McQuire, formed Team Jim in memory of her late husband Jim Shears. RUSSEL PEARCE from West Totton highlighted the plight of one of Africa’s most threatened species by wearing an 8kg rhino suit to take part in the half marathon. After completing the London Marathon earlier this year he set himself a target of raising £600 for the charity Save the Rhino.

Speaking before the event he told the A&T: “I have spent a lot of time in Africa so I was really determined to do something to help preserve these wonderful creatures. The suit is pretty heavy so I’m expecting it to be quite tough going.”
