The 2017 event had six different routes for runners to tackle, from a woodland walk, children’s race, 5k, 10k, half marathon and to the full 26.2-mile marathon.

With latest statistics showing that the New Forest has the highest level of obesity in the county. The over-arching aim for organisers Andy Daish and Chris Farr was to inspire people to be active and enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of running. And as the day unfolded it certainly was inspirational to watch the thousands of people, young and old, athletic and less so, weave their way out of the main arena at New Park, Brockenhurst and into the Forest. After battling the increasingly worsening weather and many tough miles the runners returned, some considerably quicker than others, to be greeted at the finishing line by hundreds of cheering supporters. Tired but elated, the runners crossed the line to be presented with welldeserved medals and goody bags. Despite the weather which caused the car park to clog up, the event ran like clockwork. But, behind the scenes there

were two major incidents, involving a flooded bridge and a broken bus, that threatened to cause serious disruption. At 1am on Sunday morning organiser Chris Farr received a text informing him that a temporary foot bridge at Wootton Enclosure was flooded and a lake was flowing. Chris explained: “I got the call in the middle of the night and at day break we got hold of JD Scaffolding at Beaulieu. They sent their amazing team up there early Sunday morning and built extra emergency bridges either side. “It was touch and go watching the runners on the GPS getting closer and closer to a bridge that was flooded but the brilliant team from JD literally managed to finish the job just 10 minutes before the first athlete came through.” A puncture to one of the buses used to ferry volunteers around the course also made for a nail biting incident before the races started. The Air Cadets saved the day as their minibus was mobilised to drop the marshals off at their appointed place. The final official, Ian Vickery, was dropped off and had to run 1k in his wellies to his allotted station with the lead runner joining him for part of his journey!

Over the last 34 years the New Forest marathon has raised over £1.25 million to support over 100 good causes and community groups from the New Forest. This year the event is expected to raise over £20,000, as once again ABP Southampton (Port of Southampton) will be match funding the total.

Last year 18 groups ranging from Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Air Cadets, RAYNET and Hampshire Search and Rescue benefitted. Local groups and organisations can apply to the fund to help run projects that inspire any age to be physically active.

CHILDREN LIGHT UP GLOOMY SKIES

DUE to driving rain and increasingly high winds on Sunday afternoon, the children’s race was held earlier than anticipated and shortened for health and safety reasons. However, the weather could not dampen the enthusiasm of the excited youngsters who charged around the track in their pink INEOS tee shirts with their proud soaking wet parents cheering them on from a packed grandstand.

As the children sprinted away, the official race compere Jon Vamplew gave a running commentary of proceedings and encouraged all the children home from his elevated position on the bridge above the finish line. The race was purely for fun with youngsters led home by Joseph Arndt for the boys and 11-year-old Kaitlyn Elliott for the girls.
