HISTORY OF THE NFM

RUNNER PROFILE

History of the New Forest Marathon

New Forest Marathon 1986.

The New Forest Marathon is an occasion packed full of history with 31 years of annual races under its belt. Thousands of runners and spectators have flocked to the heart of the New Forest throughout the years to be a part of the special event and we take a look back at how it all started. In 1981, New Milton based Lions Club were looking for ideas for fundraising events that could be organised and held in the town. The then club president Mick Manley came up with an idea to organise a marathon in the local area, an idea that was liked by other members and the feasibility of such an event was explored. The rest is history. Following consultation with the town and district councils as well as police and schools, support was gained and the event was given the green light. A subcommittee of club members was formed for the organisation of the event with Mick Manley as the race director. Organising such a large scale occasion is no quick or easy task and work was carried out throughout the year with an aim of staging the inaugural New Forest Marathon in 1982. Unfortunately this target had to be curtailed after failure to secure sponsorship for the event so the committee set their sights on the following year instead. They enlisted the help of a local group-the New Forest Runners club, who would go on to be a part of the organising and running of the event throughout the race’s history. Race director Mick spent a lot of his time during the two years visiting different events to gain an insight into how they were organised and run. He along with the New Forest Runners Club also

8

dedicated vast amounts of time to plan the marathon route, through measuring and marking the course. They wanted to make sure the course was safe for runners as well as incorporating the Forest’s scenery and landmarks. With the course eventually set out and officially measured by the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA), sponsorship was secured this time around and after all the required organisation the very first New Forest Marathon was held in 1983. The event was deemed a big success with not only a great turnout but money was raised for local charities and organisations within the area. The Lions Club organised the event for the next four years before deciding to pull out of future running of the event. This was a decision that left the future of the race in the balance before the New Forest Marathon Association was formed by Wilf Bradley and given the reins to continue the organising of the annual event. The race was held for another 26 successive years under this management and 31 successive years in total through to 2013. Remarkably the marathon course stayed the same through this time, other than minor changes to the start and finishing lines in 1996. Several different race directors and committee members have been at the helm and overseen memorable

moments and achievements over the years. Through the New Forest Marathon Community Fund, the event has raised £1.25 million for the local community. Whilst famous figures have graced the event with official race starters including 1956 Olympic 5000m Silver Medallist Gordon Pirie, Dame Esther Rantzen, television stars Nick Conway and Graham Bickley and many more. Sadly in 2014 the 31 year streak of successive New Forest Marathons came to end as the event had to be cancelled due to rising costs and lack of entrants. This was a real disappointment to the local area but late last year it was announced that the race would be back for 2015 under the new management of ORA events. This year’s event features a revised course based at the New Park Showground in Brockenhurst and taking runners through the New Forest National Park ensuring beautifully scenic routes for the runners to enjoy. With so much history deep rooted within this event, we are excited to continue with what has seen three decades of hard work, special memories and vital fundraising for the local community. We are excited to bring you the new look event and hope it builds a sustainable platform to inspire health and activity across the New Forest for many years to come.

So it’s safe to say he must have enjoyed running and Martin says running long distances just appealed to him much more than shorter distances. “I just love it, I always preferred that sort of distances. When I decided to make the 30th New Forest one my last, When the inaugural New Forest Marathon was held I was thinking that if Usain Bolt did 160 of his 100m in 1983, Martin Bulger was among those raring to go sprints, it would have covered 10 miles but if I add on the start line and 29 years later in 2012 he was the distances of all the 160 events that I have done, there again, running his 30th consecutive and very it would be like me running from here to Japan so I last New Forest Marathon. NUTRITONAL ADVICE

FUEL YOUR RUN How to fuel your body is always a tough question. Here are some great pointers from our nutrition specialist Kate Rasell. Whether you are a competitive runner or you simply just enjoy running for fitness, social, enjoying the scenery, eating a healthy diet and fuelling correctly can greatly aid your enjoyment, speed and endurance. Running puts high energy demands on the body so it’s important to have a healthy intake of nutrients to cope with the demands of your training programme.

5k to 10k runs (Less than 60 minutes) During short-duration, moderate intensity runs extra carbohydrate is not necessary if you consume a well balanced diet throughout training (mixture of quality protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, fruit and veg). Provided you’ve consumed enough carbohydrates during the previous 24 hours, your muscles will have enough stored glycogen (energy, fuel) to fuel your run. If you are running under an hour you won’t deplete glycogen completely so there’s no real need to consume anything other than water. Hydration: there’s no hard for fast rule on the consumption of water while exercising- you don’t want to dehydrate nor do you want to overhydrate.

For these distances in question the best advice I can give is listen to your body and I mean listen to your body. Don’t ignore the feeling of thirst or if you’re getting a little irritated or tired. These are signs of dehydration. If it’s a particularly hot day – please take more note of this as well as consider adding a little squash or a hydration tablet (high 5 zero) to your water to aid the absorption of the water being taken on board.

Runs of over 60 minutes Once you hit the hour plus mark, carbohydrate becomes an important measure of your nutrition strategy as the risk of depleting your glycogen stores is greater. This can result in fatigue and reduced performance. Consuming carbohydrate in the form of either a drink, food (jelly beans for instance) or a gel will provide you and your muscles with a ready supply of blood glucose, resulting in instant energy. This is beneficial as it spares the stored glycogen ensuring that stores do not deplete completely, avoiding the onset of fatigue, increasing your endurance but also your mental tolerance. Your brain also needs carbohydrate to function optimally and to keep you focused.

HOWEVER: How do you know how much carbohydrate you need and when? The balance between under consuming carbohydrate and fluid and over consuming is a fine one. Too much with too little fluid can cause many various degrees of gastrointestinal discomfort, thus severely affects performance – you run the risk of depleting stores and not being able to sustain the intensity that you were planning or normally run at. For maximum performance, you should therefore be thinking about consuming 30-60g carbohydrate per hour, depending on the intensity and duration. This is the equivalent of 400ml-800ml of a 6% drink (sports drink or squash) or 2 gels per hour roughly provide you 50g of carbohydrate. Banana Granola slice, 2 jelly beans, babies every 20 minutes. Experimenting with different foods and products is VITAL in your training as individual responses greatly vary. You need to find what suits you. What you do in training stick to – DO NOT change strategies for race day. Again drink to your thirst and your body’s sweat rate. Obviously you will sweat more the hotter and humid the temperature as well as working out harder and faster. It is better to drink little and often say 100ml every 15-20 minutes than gulping down water, as it will result in a greater retention and less urination.

Fuelling a Half Marathon Preparation is essential as if you get it right, you will enjoy the race day far more than if your preparation is below par. During training: practice with your different foods, energy sources and water intake – make sure you know what strategy that works for you. For the last week before the race reduce your mileage; drop the intensity of training, as this will help your muscle retain the stored glycogen. Do only very light training or rest completely the day or two before the race. This will ensure that you focus on taking in good nutrition and hydration, keeping the intake the same roughly but slightly changing the ratio of food groups. Aim to have a slightly higher complex carbohydrate intake and lower in healthy fats and protein.

Fuelling a Marathon The backbone of your diet when training for a marathon is carbohydrates. Complex Carbohydrates – these are the slow releasing type to give you sustained energy – only go near the instant stuff in and around actual running that when in training is over 60 minutes. This is so your body is able to keep a stable blood sugar level while sustaining your energy for day-to-day activities as well as coping with your training demands. Always have things to hand and never go out on a long hungry unless you are practiced and have the correct coaching for zero training. If you are like most and trying to fit in training in and around work, then think about breaking your meals down into more mini manageable meals to keep energy levels up but to allow food to be properly absorbed before you train. Do your last long training session a week or so before the event. Eat your normal diet and stick to things that you know suit your stomach – this is not the time to change things up! For the last couple of days , make carbohydrate more of a priority but do not go overboard here – don’t increase the amount you eat just switch to more carbohydrate heavy dishes, i.e. pasta, chicken, pesto or spaghetti bolognese, porridge, banana and honey.

RACE DAY NUTRITION Preparation is done, the nerves are kicking in maybe… but what do you eat to fuel yourself? If you have tapered by reducing the training load the week before and stuck to a high carbohydrate diet then your glycogen stores and muscles are ready to go – so before the race all you need to do is top up those stores. Schedule your pre-race meal 3-4 hours before the race and a small snack 1 hour-30 minutes before the race. Ideally consume 25-50g of carbohydrate for each hour before the start of the race if you’re going for the marathon distance. Ideal pre-race meals: porridge, banana and honey, cereal, banana and natural yoghurt, toast with Nutella and fruit, pancakes, honey and blueberries. Try and include a small amount of protein with this meal too to reduce the glycemic response, allowing you to have a steady drip feed of energy rather than a huge spike and drop. If you find it hard to eat before races due to nerves think about having a bedtime snack the night before or go for a liquid meal, i.e all in one shake, milkshake, smoothie or yoghurt drink. Hydrate by keeping a bottle of water or diluted squash with you and take regular sips. Use the water stations – try not to avoid them even if you feel ok – squeezing the cup together will create a spout, making sipping easier as you run.

how can running today help more of us be active in the next 12 months?

The New Forest Marathon Community Fund The New Forest Marathon attracts thousands of competitors and spectators each year with a committed team of volunteers ensuring the successful running of the event. Many of these people come from the local community and one of the main aims of the New Forest Marathon is to support this local community. In the last 31 years the New Forest Marathon has donated over £1.25 million to support over 100 local good causes and community groups from the New Forest area. These donations have made a huge impact to many people and organisations and to ensure this amount continues to grow the New Forest Marathon Community Fund has been established. Aiming to raise money to allow the continued support of all the superb organisations that exist within the local area, the fund has been raising money throughout the past year. A specific focus was chosen for the Community Fund for 2015 of inspiring any age to be physically active in the New Forest and surrounding area. Inactivity and obesity are now recognised as the 4th biggest killer in the UK costing approximately £20 billion and causing 37,000 deaths every year. Latest health statistics show the New Forest has the highest rate of obesity in the county which we want to change by getting more people active and to live a healthier lifestyle. The fund is managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIWCF) and The New Forest Marathon Committee to support the many fantastic organisations supporting our community at all ages. Local groups and organisations can apply for funding where they will then be assessed by HIWCF and the committee looking at a number of criteria. This process ensures that the donations have the maximum benefit in our local community but none of this is possible however without these donations. Any help with raising the money for the New Forest Community fund is greatly appreciated and you can donate in a number of ways. You can donate ONLINE with ‘Local Giving’ at localgiving.com/charity/newforestmarathon or VIA TEXT by simply texting TREE29 followed by £ sign and the amount you want to donate e.g. TREE29 £5 to 70070.

To apply for the Fund visit www.hantscf.org.uk and click on the ‘grants’ tab. We’d love you to join us on our journey to make our community healthier.

essentials to help enjoy your day

Make sure your race number is completed with emergency contact information and you don’t swap these with a friend – we need to know these details in case of an emergency.

If you’re feeling unwell before your chosen event we advise you not to run, health comes first.

Amend your goals depending on the conditions e.g if the weather is hot then please run slower.

Hydration is key to having a successful run, don’t start dehydrated or over hydrated and practise drinking during your training runs.

Make sure you are not running in new shoes on the race day. If you are running in a fancy dress outfit, make sure you have tried running in it before to ensure it’s not dangerous.

Drink sensibly according to the conditions and not too much during the race.

Rehydration is important when finishing your event, drink slowly rather than gulp large volumes very quickly.

Do not take antiinflammatories before or during your event. Take paracetamol should you need painkillers. As always, seek medical advice where necessary.

Have fun and enjoy the race!

HAZARDS The courses comprise of a mixture of compact gravel tracks and roads which are lovely to run on, however, you need to remember that you are running through the New Forest National Park and therefore you will be sharing the forest with all sorts of wildlife such as ponies and deer. If you come across any of these please be respectful and give them a wide berth, do not touch or feed the animals, or marshals! There are many natural hazards such as tree roots, branches and the occasional puddle or ford. When you approach these if you want to keep your feet dry then use the bridges provided or hop over them. MARSHALS Many of the marshals are volunteers without which the event would not be possible. They are there for your safety and to enhance your experience. Please be polite to them and abide by their advice. MEDICS We have a full medical team at the race village and around the course. These include 2 ambulances and crew, a 4x4 ambulance and crew, 2 cycle response units as well as 16 first aiders, a doctor and managers. If you feel unwell or pick up an injury please stop running and report to the nearest marshal, who will summon help. ROAD CLOSURES The course follows a road traffic strategy. The Half, 10k and 5k, will operate under full road closure. The Full marathon will operate under staged road closures. In the unlikely event that you encounter a car please be careful and keep to the side of the road. We must remind you that running with headphones on is strongly discouraged, especially on the road sections. CHIP TIMING Your running number contains your race chip, please ensure that this is safety pinned to your top using the pins included in your race pack. The chip will automatically pick you up as you pass the start and finish line. At the end of the race you are free to take your chipped race number home with you as a momento of the day. Approximately 20 minutes prior to your race you will be called to the warm up stage for a quick briefing and group warm up to get you ready for your race. You will then be asked to make your way down the start channel and find a suitable place on the start line. Runners are encouraged to pick a start point where they will be with other runners of a similar speed. We have separated the start area into rapid paced runners, moderate paced runners and leisurely paced runners. All runners will be placed based on their chip time so there is no rush to get over the line. COUNT DOWN TO START Once you are at the start line you will be given a count down to start. The race starts on the hooter. DROPPING OUT There will be sweep vehicles following the half and full marathon, if you feel you can not make it around the course please report to the nearest marshal who will make a note of your race number and ensure you get back to the race village safely. SLOW RUNNERS Our event only has priority over the roads until 3.30pm, this will allow all runners plenty of time to

complete the course. If you are still on the course after this time you must stop and report to the nearest marshal who will escort you onto the sweep bus. WALKING We understand that some runners may wish to walk part of the course, if this is the case, please KEEP TO THE SIDE so you do not become an obstacle for faster runners to dodge around. WHAT TO DO AFTER CROSSING THE LINE When you finish the race you will be directed into the finishing zone where you can collect your well earned medal and goodie bag as well as a bottle of water, this bottle can be refilled as many times as you like from the many water stations around the race village. me to the local running club at Bedford & County where I met my coach Alex Stanton who coached me throughout my career. So yeah that’s where I began and I made my first international when I was 14. What is it about running that you love so much? We speak to Liz about her career and life after international long distance running.

So you were in France over the summer hosting a training camp, what was that for? Once a year I run a Run Camp in the Alps and that’s for people who want to go running and learn more about their running. We have this beautiful retreat – like camp where they’re waited on hand and foot where all they have to do is eat sleep and run! How excited are you to be the official starter for the New Forest Marathon and half marathon? Yeah it’s great. It’s really great to support local events. It’s a great venue to go to and take your family. I have friends running who I will be supporting and I’m really looking forward to do it. Do you get to run in the New Forest much? We often drive out to the New Forest and do some routes out there. I love it with all of the trees and everything, it’s just stunning. You have something different to look at around every corner so it makes you keep running as you want to see what’s coming next.

BUDGE POUNTNEY Joining Liz on official starting duties at this year’s New Forest Marathon is Former Scottish Rugby Captain Budge Pountney who will be getting the INEOS Go Run For Fun kids race for 5-10 year olds underway. The Flanker who retired from the game in 2003 will sound the horn for the 1.5 kilometres race open to 5-10 year olds which will see them do a loop round the New Park showground. This will mean the kids will have the same starting and finishing line as for all the races throughout the day giving them the same experience of what promises to be a great atmosphere. Budge made 31 caps for Scotland with highlights including playing in all matches when Scotland won the 1999 Five Nations Championship and being part of the Scotland squad for the 1999 World Cup. He said “It’s a true honour to start the INEOS Go Run For Fun event at this year’s New Forest Marathon, it’s so fantastic to see so many local children experience running on this great stage.” The GO Run For Fun programme aims to get as many kids between the age of 5 and 10 running as possible through well organized fun events. Events large and small have happened across UK in the campaign’s first year and even made it overseas to Europe, to bring kids together to run and have fun. The campaigns aim by 2016 is to get 100,000 UK children running and it is well on track for this target with supporters including Lord Coe praising the work that has been done. Chris Farr (ORA Events) said: “We are so excited to be hosting a Go Run for Fun event and to have Budge starting the event is a real privilege. He is such an inspirational person to be around and will be great to further inspire the kids to continue running in the future”. The Go Run For Fun race is among a number of races during the day including a Full and Half Marathon as well as The Advertiser and Times 10k and adult and junior 5k races. Furthermore a host of food and drink traders, musical entertainment on the main stage and activities for the kids will make it something the New Forest can be proud of. Both Budge and Liz are sure to add much to what will be a special day and who better to inspire the thousands of runners as they set off from that starting line.

Chapelgate Films - the official film crew for the New Forest Marathon this year. They are a new business, trading for almost 2 years, building on the strengths of their forebear, Chapelgate Productions which had been based on the edge of the New Forest, on the Enterprise Centre, for over 20 years. They have a proud legacy and they love what they do. Their creative portfolio is wide ranging. In the past year they’ve clambered into the engine room of a cruise ship, climbed a crane at Southampton docks and clamped an action camera inside a precision cutter to achieve innovative and stunning shots for a diverse list of satisfied clients. Whilst part of their work comes from national organizations they are always keen to work locally within Hampshire. Recent projects for Southampton City Council and Hampshire County Council have been well received. A niche area they are rapidly expanding into concerns interactive video training. Applications they have found so far vary from educating schoolchildren on the dangers of teenage pregnancy to customer care training in the hospitality industry. Their films can make businesses come alive. With a pool of freelancers, consultants and trusted partners, including their friends at Droid Cam, providers of the aerial footage for the event; there isn’t much they can’t do when it comes to painting the story and conveying the vision and values of organizations both big and small. On the race day a team from Chapelgate will be capturing the stunning location of the marathon, some cheeky spectator interviews and of course the stars of the show, the runners themselves. Keep an eye out for their cameras which will be circulating the event, and look up for the drone, and you might feature in our official event film!

But they need your help too… They want you to help them out with the filming. If you’ve captured any footage of the races on your phone they’d love for you to send it to them. They’re going to compile everyone’s video clips together into an online memento of the day. If you’d like to send them your clips you can do so via:

MUSIC LINE UP

AT THE NEW FOREST MARATHON

Chartz Southampton based 4-piece Chartz will be providing a fresh, modern pop/rock experience to enjoy on the day and we caught up with Guitarist Mikey Webber to talk all things the band. Featuring lead female and male vocals, the exceptionally talented Chartz will be performing covers to suit all tastes from modern day dance floor fillers to more classic numbers. With this focus on playing covers, guitarist Mikey explains how the band like to stay unique by putting their own

Liam White Multi-talented 20 year old singer songwriter and entertainer Liam White from Ashurst will be bringing his exciting repertoire of swing and jazz that is sure to get the New Forest Marathon crowds dancing. After taking his music to hundreds of venues over the last two years, Liam’s fan base has been ever-increasing as recognition of his talents grows all the time. With a passion for swing and big band music, Liam says this kind of music has

spin on them. “We learn the songs but we don’t follow it necessarily religiously as it may not suit the instruments and they way we play anyway so we prefer just to sound good and reminiscent of the song rather than just a bad idea of it trying to be exactly the same.” Now all at the age of 22, the four met several years ago at university before going on to form as a band. Chartz is actually just one half of the quartet’s music, with them playing together for the last four years as their other band Signals. With a recent performance at Isle of Wight Festival under their belts, Signals perform a unique genre of Math pop and focus more on original material. Mikey said forming the second band Chartz, which has been going for over a year now, was a decision they made more for the business side of things and it has really helped them. “Quite a lot of people leave Uni and fall into jobs that aren’t necessarily what you study for and this was a good opportunity to improve, playing all these other covers and becoming better musicians independently as well, all with a career

in the music industry as the goal.” The band mainly play at weddings and functions with them playing an estimated 30 weddings in the past year. This is a figure they want to increase even further with the aim of a wedding every weekend and Mikey says playing weddings have been a great experience. “You see such an array of different people when you do the weddings and it never gets boring really. You get different venues, different sort of crowds; it’s different every time but we’re really enjoying it.” Chartz are sure to be a fantastic addition to the New Forest Marathon with an ever growing repertoire of covers and their characteristically energetic performances. Mikey said they are looking forward to playing at the event. “We’re always up for playing events for charities and stuff and it’s a nice opportunity to play to a lot of people and should be a nice day out.”

always been in his blood. “There are very few people at my age who are so into it as their main music. I grew up with it really, my mum and dad used to put on these dance nights when I was young, playing all this big band stuff and all these different songs so it just went on from there.” After being inspired by a talented music teacher at school, Liam started learning to play music and is now self taught on the piano, guitar and the ukulele. Despite this array of musical talents, Liam believes his best instrument is actually his voice. Amongst his vast amount of live shows, the 20 year old also regularly performs as ‘The Bublé Experience’, inspired by Canadian artist Michael Bublé. However Liam says he sees himself much more than just a tribute act. “I didn’t want to be classed as a tribute so I just wanted to take the music and base the show around it. I started doing some gigs, getting some good feedback, so I thought I might as well do this and set up a business for myself. It’s just a great thing to do.” On top of regularly performing live, Liam also has just released his debut album titled ‘Addicted To You’. The

album features covers of his favourites as well as four original songs, and Liam says writing his own material was something he was very keen to do. “I thought it would be nice to try and write my own stuff because if I ever do get that lucky day and someone says do you want a record deal, I can’t just say I want to do Bublé so I need my own identity.” Liam says his main aim is just to be able to do what he loves best as a job. “All I want to do is make a living first and enjoy the music. It would be nice to keep this going and if I get lucky at anytime then that would be great but until that happens have a laugh with it as life’s too short.” This fun-loving attitude is portrayed in his performances, all of which will be seen at the New Forest Marathon. Liam says he is excited to play on the day. “It sounds like a brilliant event and it’s only up the road. It’s nice to get your face out to more people and it’s all experience really so yeah we’re looking forward to it.”

Be sure to catch Chartz on the day and more information on the band can be found online at chartz-band.co.uk

MARATHON RECOVERY

Is Your body running on all cylinders? INVESTING IN YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH & WELL-BEING YourPhysioPlan.com is a new innovative way to think about Physiotherapy, Massage and Conditioning. YourPhysioPlan.com members have increased access to Private Physiotherapy, Massage or Conditioning through monthly payment plans, rather than being faced with a large outlay after an intense course of treatment. We have all been investing in our Dental and Optical Health for years, not to mention our Pet’s well-being and the longevity of our mechanical possessions – but who has been investing in their Physical Health & Well-being? Is Your body running on all cylinders?! YourPhysioPlan.com members get more from life by forming a regular relationship with their Physiotherapist, who monitors the condition of their musculoskeletal health and provides early intervention: stopping injuries occurring or escalating to the point they affect quality of life and function. YouPhysioPlan.com has developed 4

‘levels’ of cover, ranging from a one off assessment, to bi-monthly treatments that can be used by the whole family at any of the registered clinics across the country. The plans are tailored to provide something for everyone. The ‘YourEsentials’ plan provides the user with 6 sessions of Physiotherapy, Massage or Conditioning which can be used as they are needed across the space of the year of which the plan runs. This level of cover is aimed at people who may need short term intensive treatment, but who want to avoid the upfront cost, and also those looking for regular management. The highest level cover comes with the ‘YourElite’ plan. This plan is aimed at the competitive

sportsman or travelling business person. Members are allotted 2 treatments per month, every month which can be used at any registered clinic across the UK. So when competing or travelling away, you can be reassured that you will have access to expert local care, without even having to look. Simply tap in the postcode of where you are and YourPhysioPlan.com will give you a list of your nearest registered clinics. YourPhysioPlan.com have exploded into the healthcare field, and are already associated with the British 10km, Mizuno, The New Forest Marathon, 7evens and the City, and have their own Race event ‘The Stansted Steeler’ on the 30th August this year!

People underestimate the importance of effective postmarathon care. Alongside comfort, correct procedure can significantly reduce injury risk both short and long term. Progressive recovery can actually help to improve future events so that your PR improves race after race and keeps you training with minimal downtime. A marathon is no easy feat for the body. Each of your systems undergoes a period of prolonged stress and some under maximmum intensity. One of the first things to note is your immediate post-race recovery. Don’t just sit down and rest – if you do this, you won’t be getting back up in a hurry! Walk for 1520 mins gently to encourage a normal blood flow through the body, give everything a chance to normalise. Your next step is looking to hydration and diet. Immediately post-race you won’t be in the mood for a big meal, so try to take on a balanced carbohydrate and protein shake, nuts, fruits or gels or

replenish immediate muscle glycogen stores and protein synthesis. If you crave something, let your body have it. You need to try and continue with healthy eating over the next few days to weeks, particularly high protein foods [iron rich is another positive] to aid muscle recovery. Rehydrating allows your cells to more efficiently transport nutrients around the body, and again is key for glycogen synthesis. Compression garments can also help to improve blood flow to recovering muscles, in combination with ice baths or wraps to slow cell metabolism and decrease extended tissue damage.

AMY 53 Amy Hughes is known for completing 53 marathons in 53 days in 2014. She decided to take on the incredible challenge of running 53 marathons in 53 days last year to raise money for a friend’s daughter who was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The sports therapist started her first marathon in Chester on August 6 and completed her 53rd consecutive run in Manchester on September 27. Incredibly, the challenge saw Amy pound out 1,388 miles and go through five different pairs of trainers as she smashed the world record. Amy has recently been running with a pair of neon green Aftershokz Bluez2 and here’s what she has to say about her headphones…

I can’t explain how good it is to finally have some headphones that are actually good. I always struggle to find decent headphones, but I can honestly say from the first time I used the Aftershokz I thought they were great. You can’t fault the Bluetooth at all, there’s no interference and the sound is really clear. They are so simple to work. The volume and control buttons are easy to use while running which is one of the best things in my opinion because I don’t like having to stop. I have covered a lot of miles wearing these headphones so there’s been a hell of a lot of sweat involved but it hasn’t affected the sound at all. I LOVE THEM! GO Run For Fun is a national campaign, delivered locally. Find or request an event near you!

RUNNER PROFILE

THIS GIRL CAN NICKY REYNOLDS Completing a 13 mile course takes copious amounts of motivation and commitment and represents a daunting challenge that many people would find pretty much any excuse to avoid. But 28-yearold Nicky Reynolds from Hooke, Dorset is not even letting the very biggest of obstacles get in her way of going around the New Forest Half Marathon course.

Nicky suffers with severe asthma, relying on a continuous subcutaneous pump to deliver medication into her 24/7 to help her breathe properly. This along with taking all sorts of tablets and frequent hospital visits helps control the condition but it also comes with very nasty side effects. One of the most severe is the brittleness of her bones and in June this year Nicky suffered 5 fractures across both her feet resulting with one foot in cast and the other in an Orthopaedic shoe. This was a huge setback with her aim being to walk the half marathon course, a feat Nicky achieved at the Birmingham Half Marathon in 2012, and with the September date for the New Forest Marathon it would have been easy to say she’ll wait until next year but Nicky wasn’t having any of it. She explained how she has instead varied her plans and is now aiming to complete some of the course in a wheelchair and some of it walking. “I was desperate still to do it so I rang the guys at the marathon and they suggested that it would be fine to do it in a wheelchair which was brilliant. Hopefully I will be able to do half and half walking but it may be more 70/30 in the wheelchair.” “The problem is I can’t walk too much as the bones are so brittle that they could break again. My Consultant said he wasn’t happy for me to walk to the whole half marathon and just end up re-breaking them but I can still walk some of it.” Both casts were removed in early August and with Nicky’s feet now recovering well, she is ready to tackle the course with the help of some friends along the way. She will be in a group of four other people including two GPs who will make sure everything is fine from the medical side of things and two friends who have agreed to push Nicky in the wheelchair. Of course with most of the other entrants in the race running around the course, Nicky understands that it will take her a lot longer which was one of her main concerns about doing the race. It has been agreed though that she will start earlier than everyone else so she won’t be on her own when crossing the finishing line. Nicky says this will make the race much more enjoyable. “It was a really lovely idea to start earlier as therefore I could finish with the main body of people from the marathon so you get all the finishing atmosphere rather than coming in hours later where you would feel a bit demoralized by the time you get there.

little feet make

big strides

“I grew up nearby as a child and have really good memories walking with my dad when I was a kid so it’s a really special place where we spent a lot of time together. I thought it would be really nice to be out in the New Forest rather than walking in a big city.”

“When I did the Birmingham half marathon in 2012 we started a little bit earlier than everyone else in the wheelchair race but only half an hour earlier so by the time we finished almost everyone had gone.” You would think having very severe asthma along with all the side effects from the medication would perhaps prevent you from wanting to do exercise but Nicky says she has always enjoyed staying active and is still really keen to do what she can. “I used to play a lot of hockey and I also have two horses at the moment that I still love to ride but it’s up and down depending on how well I am. When I was younger I used to be really active but when my asthma got a lot worse when I was 16 to 17, I then started to spend a lot more time in hospital as I had a lot more severe attacks and had to take a lot more medication to keep me breathing.” Nicky is also a primary school teacher in Basingstoke teaching autistic children. With the recent summer holidays, she has been able to rest her feet more and get prepared for the event. Nikki explained why the New Forest Marathon in particular appealed to her. “I grew up nearby as a child and have really good memories walking with my dad when I was a kid so it’s a really special place where we spent a lot of time together. I thought it would be really nice to be out in the New Forest rather than walking in a big city.” If completing the race was not a big enough achievement in itself, Nicky is also hoping to raise some money for a number of charities including ‘Parity for disability’ a charity based in Berkshire and Surrey which provides support for teenagers and young adults with multiple disabilities. Come race day on September 13th, Nicky Reynolds may not be the fastest person to complete the course but you would be hard pushed to find one more courageous.

MYO Pizza was born out of Victoria’s love for cooking, food and most importantly Italy. Dreaming of a restaurant since the young age of eleven, Victoria spent her teenage years working in the industry and imagining concepts for her perfect restaurant. It wasn’t until her time in the corporate world of Vodafone HQ that she really felt she hit the nail on the head and the idea of MYO Pizza was formed. Realising that people appreciate more choice from their dining experiences, she hit upon an idea where each customer’s experience was completely bespoke. Through giving people the opportunity to make their own pizza, this enables the fussiest of eaters to enjoy something they truly want, rather than ‘making do’. She ultimately wants to open a restaurant in which the pizza will be hand-stretched to order, from freshly prepared dough and customers can physically make their own pizza from the array of pizza toppings available.

newforestleisure

The pizzaioli will be notified as soon as the pizza is ready to go in the wood fired oven and within minutes, a completely personalised, sizzling pizza will be ready to be devoured. Victoria also imagines live music and a lively bar. First in her journey is MYO Italian Street Food. Realising she needed to start somewhere and needing to grow some capital for the restaurant she felt encouraged to try the street food route. Following a 3 month research trip around Italy and finding the love of her life Theo (a 1970 French Renault Estafette), her vision for MYO Italian Street Food was born. Through her authentically prepared dishes of focaccia pizza, arancini, meatballs and various other dishes, she hopes to bring a taste of Italy to the UK. Based in Salisbury, Theodore and Victoria travel throughout the country attending local events, festivals and private events. Victoria particularly enjoys private events as she believes Theo becomes the ‘star of the show’ and is the perfect gimmick to any party.

So, if you’d like some home catering, with absolutely no washing up, send Victoria an email on victoria@myopizza.co.uk If you’d like to follow Victoria’s journey from when she left the corporate world to where she is today or if you just fancy knowing where Theodore will next be check it out on www.myopizza.co.uk For those reading this, and have signed up for the New Forest Marathon on 13th September, you’re in luck as MYO Pizza will be there, ready and waiting to reward you all, with delicious Italian Street Food.

Race Staff & Volunteers We would like to thank everyone who has played a part in bringing The New Forest Marathon 2015 together. A huge effort from people, not only in the local area but from further afield, who hold the event dear to their heart. This space doesn’t allow us to thank everyone personally but we extend our thanks and gratitude to all that have been so supportive in order to make it happen.

From the individual and group volunteers who make up our Race Crew, Race Village Crew, local and national businesses for key supplies and support, New Forest District Council and both Brockenhurst and Sway Parish Councils for ongoing support and the events relocation, the National Park Authority and Forestry Commission for the use of the wonderful New Forest and sustainable

transport grants, the New Park Showground Society for hosting the event and the local residents for their patience and support, we thank you all. Of course none of this would have been possible without the original committee who built the event from its origins back in 1982 in New

our farm

Milton through to the more recent committee members who have continued to give time and valued support. This combined effort will provide the perfect platform for the event to continue to grow and inspire the local community to be more healthy and active.
