LETTER FROM THE DESIGNER MY APPROACH FOR THIS MAGAZINE WAS AN EMPHASIS ON WHITE SPACE, I FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO EXPLORE THIS DESIGN APPROACH, AS PERSONALLY I'VE NEVER DABBLED DOWN THIS ALLEY. THIS PROJECT WAS THE PERFECT MEDIUM TO EXPLORE THIS, AS THE CONTENT WAS THE MAIN DISCUSSION, SO GIVING EMPHASIS ON THE SPACE AROUND THE CONTENT WAS IMPORTANT. A CONSISTENCY LOOK AND FEEL WAS ALSO EMPLOYED TO GIVE THE MAGAZINE A CLEAR IDENTITY, WHICH I FELT WAS IMPORTANT AS THIS IS THE LAUNCH ISSUE.

IM GLAD TO HAND IT OVER TO YOU, THE READER. SO PLEASE ENJOY AND HOPEFULLY I'VE MADE THIS VISUALLY EXCITING FOR YOU TO READ.

ENVIRO–LUXE Inspired by the inimitable Coco Chanel at her kitchen table one day in 2006, Rebecca Powell dreamed up TLuxe basics, a clothing brand that was at once ethical, comfortable and luxurious. Sourced from local suppliers and made from natural fibres, TLuxe clothing is the environmentally friendly label that produces clothes befitting the laid back Australian way of life.

WHEN DID YOU START UP TLUXE?

FAVOURITE TEXTURE/FABRIC?

Tluxe came to life late in 2006, on my kitchen table in Tamarama.

I love working with silk and combining it with other textures and fabrics.

WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF TLUXE?

A MOMENT THAT YOU’LL NEVER FORGET The birth of both of my boys, Luka and Jet.

Our philosophy is to make beautiful, minimal and wearable clothing that fits and flatters all shapes and sizes. We’re also conscious to make clothes that result in the smallest carbon footprint possible. We work with local suppliers and manufacturers using natural fibres to create fabrics that feel beautiful and wash and wear well. Where possible we work with sustainable and organic fabrics and everything we do is locally made. TLuxe is the antithesis of fast fashion; our garments are made to last, they transcend fashion to become wardrobe keepers.

THE PERSON WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU THE MOST?

ONE ITEM OF CLOTHING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? My organic cotton TLuxe ‘Sandy Lane’ pants. I have one in every colour and pretty much live in them! WHICH OF YOUR SENSES IS MOST DOMINANT? Sight.

Vivienne Westwood for challenging boundaries. She inspired me to want to design. WHEN YOU HAVE A SPARE MOMENT YOU LOVE TO… Spend time with my family and friends and discover places I haven’t been to before. WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR TLUXE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS?

I’m

a

person.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE TO YOU? Achieving a and enjoying

work, life balance the work you do.

FAVOURITE THINKING SPOT? The

WORDS YOU LIVE BY. MOST EXCITING ACCOMPLISHMENT WITH TLUXE? Opening the pop up shop in Bondi was fun as it gave us firsthand experience with customers.

To move into retail and expand on our range of great basics. To research and develop new sustainable fabric blends for sleepwear, knitwear and home wares .We are also currently working on a menswear range!

EATING ON THE

Helmed by Michael Benson and chef Sam Smith, the Hill Eatery has been serving breakfast to the Bondi community since 2012

was opened as an extension to Michael Benson and Sarah Hendricks’ nearby restaurant, Porch and Parlour. With an emphasis

the sustainable, the Hill Eatery serves locally and sustainably sourced produce and its interiors are entirely furnished with rec materials. Its menu is at once sumptuous and environmentally ethical; Michael shared with us how it came to fruition.

WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE HILL? Our mission is, above all, to create a community around The Hill Eatery which in turn enriches the lives of our customers, our employees and our neighbourhood. Our produce is ethically sourced with a focus on the provenance of the food. We are believers in farm to plate and we practice this philosophy as often as we can, reaching out beyond the city limits to engage with the industry as a whole. WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR WINE? Our wine is sourced ethically from within Australia to reduce our carbon footprint. We produce some exceptional organic and bio-dynamic wines in Australia we showcase some of the smaller producers who put a lot of love into their products. We source wine from the Margaret River in Western Australian (Woodlands Winery) all the way to Mudgee in New South Wales (Lowe Organic Wines.) WHAT DREW YOU TO HOSPITALITY? I am not part of the kitchen team. I am trained as an Interior Architect running my own practice Benson Studio and have always been drawn to the hospitality industry both from a professional and

personal point of view. Taking the step three years ago into opening our first venue, Porch and Parlour, was not such a big leap of faith and has flowed into our more recent opening at The Hill Eatery.

THE ONE PLACE THAT INSPIRE MOST?

FAVOURITE DISH ON THE MENU AND WHY?

YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY?

My favourite dish on the menu is the Sunday Roast. Every week our chefs source some beautiful produce and on Sunday we put on a big roast. I love this because it brings together friends and family at the end of the weekend to catch up and unload. We love it here and so do our customers. The atmosphere of a Sunday Roast can't be surpassed and that, to me, is what hospitality is all about.

WINTER SKIN SAVIOURS KEEP YOUR SKIN NOURISHED AND MOISTURIZED WITH THESE TRIED AND TESTED SKIN SAVIOURS.

FROM MARIE JENKINS, FOUNDER OF KOSMEA:

“These three products are a great combination to layer.

First apply the Kosmea Rose Hip Oil to damp skin - I love to do this in the morning as soon as I hop out of the shower as the skin is lovely and warm and able to absorb the rosehip oil more rapidly - wait for 5 minutes and then apply the Moisturising Lotion SPF30+. This is a fantastic combination to protect the skin from the days environmental enemies.

At least twice a week I apply the Eighth Natural Wonder Revitalising Facial Serum to my skin after cleansing at night, without using any other products. Try this and watch how soft, toned and refreshed your skin feels and looks when you wake up.”

IT'S ALL GOOD AND GOOP GWYNETH'S ORGANIC DOMINATION

Some love her, some hate her. As an observer of Gwyneth Paltrow’s life it’s easy to be envious. Devoted rock star husband, Oscar on the mantle, and a bunch of lovely kids. Not to mention her growing online community lifestyle blog, Goop which encourages readers to nurture their ‘inner aspect’. To be honest, I’m a bit of a fan of old Gwynnie, she’s successfully made the transition from film star to cook and online guru, which clearly is her true passion. When reading her latest cookbook, co-authored with Julia Turschen, ‘It’s All Good’ (RRP: $39.95 - Publisher MacMillan), it’s hard to not reflect on the author and her privileged life and imagine her sitting in her Notting Hill house all smug & self-assured due to the cookbook being an international publishing success. Having said that, It’s All Good is a jolly good read if you are an avid healthy dieter. Given Gwyneth’s passion for food and genuine interest in healthy eating for her and her family, and the presumption that she has spent an awful lot of money seeing dieticians, doctors, herbalists and nutritionists seeking the best advice in the world, as readers, we may as well benefit from her insight into food and wellness. I know everyone’s been talking about the Boiled Egg recipe (you didn’t just misread that) or the wholesome ‘nonrecipe’ Avocado On Toast, but there are some recipes that are super easy, nutritious and combine a multitude of dietary disciplines. The book is inspiring and encourages clean eating with easy-to-do recipes that would work for dinner parties or a family mid-week meal. Overall, It’s All Good is a mash-up of American-style food with healthy food, a bit like mixing hip hop with classical, but it works.

BANANA “ICE CREAM” WITH SWEET-AND-SALTY ROASTED ALMONDS this recipe has all the rich, creamy texture of ice cream with none of the dairy or sugar. the crunchy topping is a snap to put together and is so, so good. Makes about 1 pint VEGAN 4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced into thin rounds ¼ cup finely chopped roasted almonds 2 teaspoons plus 2 tablespoons good-quality maple syrup, divided A pinch of coarse sea salt ½ cup unsweetened almond milk 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Freeze the banana slices in a single layer on a tray or plate lined with parchment or wax paper. once the slices are frozen, use them immediately or keep frozen in a zip-top plastic bag or airtight container for up to a month. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the almonds with 2 teaspoons of the maple syrup and the pinch of salt and set the mixture aside. Combine the frozen banana slices, the almond milk, the remaining 2 tablespoons of the maple syrup, and the vanilla in a food processor and pulse until the mixture is the texture of soft-serve ice cream, scraping down the sides as necessary. don’t worry if the mixture is not totally smooth at first—once the bananas start to break down and defrost in the food processor, they’ll give in and the “ice cream” will take shape quickly. spoon the banana “ice cream” into bowls immediately and sprinkle each serving with a bit of the almond mixture.

TOP 5 COMM CAMPAIGN 1.

RED BULL STRATOS SPACE JUMP – RED BULL When you think of Red Bull, you may think of their creative tagline, "Red Bull gives you wings." Well this year, Red Bull decided to put that tagline into the hearts and minds of their audience by hiring Austrian extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner to break the world record of the longest freefall jump of 128,000 feet above the Earth, reaching the high speed of 833.9 miles per hour. Talk about intense! More than eight million people tuned in to watch Baumgartner jump from the middle of the Earth's stratosphere live on YouTube October 14 2012, making it the most watched livestream ever. The jump became an international news event, igniting coverage on major TV networks and setting off three trending hashtags on Twitter: #SpaceJump, #RedBull and #FelixBaumgartner. The excellent thing about this campaign is that despite the setbacks that the campaign faced, Red Bull stuck with it and saw it through till the end. – youtube link.

2.

DUMB WAYS TO DIE – METRO TRAINS MELBOURNE McCann's safety campaign for Metro Trains in Melbourne, Dumb Ways To Die, quickly became a YouTube sensation. Rather than a typically earnest public service announcement, McCann opted for a mix of offbeat humour, a catchy tune and a collection of amiable animated characters to launch our message as an online music video under the compelling title Dumb Ways to Die. Within 24 hours of its launch, the Dumb Ways to Die song reached the top 10 chart of iTunes and was ranked number six on the singer/ songwriter category on the global iTunes chart just 48 hours later. Within a week of its launch McCann's Dumb Ways To Die video had recorded over 15 million views and was pronounced "the fastestgrowing Australian viral internet hit ever", outranking both Rihanna and Gangnam Style in global popularity. Supported by an integrated advertising campaign, it has achieved over 45 million views and spawned a plethora of global parodies and spin-offs, attracting massive global media attention for Metro Trains and its safety message.

PUSH TO ADD DRAMA – BELGUIM TNT LAUNCH To launch the TV network TNT in Belgium, a big red push button was placed ‘on an average Flemish square of an average Flemish town’. A sign with the text ‘Push to add drama’ invited people to use the button, which when pushed, unbeknownst to them, set of a chaotic and entertaining chain of events. The concept was influenced by TNT's tagline, "We know drama”. In less than 2 days, TNT had generated over 6.5 million views. Over a year later, there are more than 45 million views on YouTube. Experiential marketing is not easy, but TNT managed to pull it off successfully while also ingraining the message that they are the network for drama. While thinking of your next campaign, even if it doesn't leverage experiential marketing, think about how you can ensure that your audience walks away thinking about the message your company wants to promote. – youtube link.

5.

THE NEXT BIG THING IS ALREADY HERE – SAMSUNG GALAXY In 2012, Samsung announced the launch of its newest phone, the GALAXY S III. Around the same time, Apple was also planning the launch of its iPhone 5. So how did a company like Samsung break through the noise of one of the most popular brands around? Samsung created a campaign called "The Next Best Thing Is Already Here," which was very careful not to mention Apple by name while making it obvious that Samsung's product was superior. After just one day on the web, the video had been shared 99,294 times, and it generated 2.3 million views. And after three months, it had generated over 17 million views. Samsung was strategic in the making and marketing of this video. First, they focused on the true feature differentiation between the two products, something that every potential buyer cares about. Samsung also made great use of humour to poke fun at Apple addicts in a playful way. And again, while they didn't even mention the Apple or iPhone name, they made it very obvious to anyone watching that it was the brand they were comparing themselves to. – youtube link.

A SXSW STOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN EACH OTHER? We’ve known each other since we were kids, fresh out of school. It seems like we’ve know each other for a lifetime….and now we're onto our second - we’ve been re-incarnated haha WHAT'S THE ONE SONG YOU'VE WRITTEN THAT YOU DON'T GET SICK OF PERFORMING? We never tire of playing ‘Please’, one of the first songs we ever wrote together. We often open our set with it because it’s like our song, it helps us settle, it feels like home. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DEBUT EP? In our debut EP ‘HOLLYWOOD’ we almost subconsciously documented our whole relationship. While at times it is hard for us to wear our hearts so openly on our sleeve, it has been a huge part of our songwriting. As Stevie Nicks said “devastation leads to writing good things”. The title ‘HOLLYWOOD’ was inspired by the fact that as we were putting the songs together for the Ep we realized that the time we

spent playing at the Hotel Hollywood each week not only represented a significant time for us musically but also personally. These songs are the story of us. The first song ‘Please’ is one of the first songs we ever wrote together and the last song ‘Hollywood’ we finished after we’d broken up, while we were in the studio recording it. HAVE YOU GOT ANY EXCITING PROJECTS COMING UP? I guess the most exciting project we have coming up would have to be our debut album. We are always writing, but now we are quite focused, and have begun putting together a piece of work that truly represents us. TELL US ABOUT FOLK CLUB . . . WHEN /WHERE/WHO? WHAT: Folk Club WHEN: Wednesday Nights (from May 1st) WHERE: The Soda Factory (Surry Hills) WHO: The Falls, Jack Carty, Bears With Guns, Evan & the Brave, Jordan Leser, Boy Outside, Stu Larsen are just some of the acts that will be gracing the stage in May.

Folk Club is an incredible night of live music which is fast becoming an integral part of the Sydney music scene. Born from those early days we spent playing every Wednesday night at the Hotel Hollywood and inspired by Communion (a night in the UK founded by Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), Kevin Jones (Cherbourg) and producer Ian Grimble www.facebook. com/CommunionMusic). The night has seen the likes of Lanie Lane, Georgia Fair and Passenger grace the stage and has become closely associated with the nu-folk movement that seems to be growing here. In 2013 we have found a new home at exciting new venue The Soda Factory. WHEN & WHERE ARE YOU NEXT PERFORMING? Our next show will be Wednesday 1st May, opening night of Folk Club 2013. And, since it is the opening night of our beloved Folk Club, we’ll be doing something a little special… we’ll be performing with a string quartet. We are pretty excited about playing The Soda Factory and feel like this is going to be one to remember especially with our good friends Leroy Lee and Jack Carty by our sides.

I love the ocean and surfing and I found it’s a great way to share that passion with other women in beautiful surroundings topped off with healthy food and nice accommodation. HOW MANY GIRLS DO YOU NORMALLY TAKE WITH YOU? I keep the groups small and take four to five aspiring Gidgets to the surf weekends. I want to make sure everyone gets decent one on one time. Outside of the surfing weekends, I also give private lessons and they are usually one on one or, at the most two if someone wants to bring a friend or their partner. WHERE'S YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT TO GO SURFING?

There are so many beautiful spots along the east coast of Australia it’s hard to pick a favourite, but I find myself returning to the south coast over and over again. It’s only three hours south of Sydney, it’s stunning and never crowded. For up and for

private lessons I love heading towards the Northern Beaches find a quiet spot. Palm Beach, example, is simply breathtaking.

WHAT ARE THE USUAL RESPONSES FROM THE GIRLS AFTER EXPERIENCING A SURF WEEKEND? Overwhelmingly positive – I always get really lovely emails from the girls. I guess a lot of girls appreciate that I’ve also only started surfing as a grown up so I can relate to them really well and teach them based on fairly recent experience. With Venus in ‘Venus goes Gidget’ I am referring to the Roman goddess associated with love, beauty, sex, fertility, prosperity and military victory (thanks Wiki – could not have described it any better). Venus represents femininity, so there is a Venus in every woman. Gidget was probably the first well known surfer girl. The original Gidget was created by Frederick Kohner in 1957. Kohner was fascinated by his daughter’s aspirations to take part in a ‘boys-only’ sport back in the days. That’s how Gidget was born. He wrote the novel ‘Gidget, The Little Girl with Big Ideas’ based on his teenage daughter’s adventures getting involved with the local surf scene in Malibu. The novel got turned into a popular TV series and even some films. Until today, the name ‘Gidget’ is used as a synonym for surfing girl. So ‘Venus Goes Gidget’ stands for women (just like Venus) who get into the water among the boys (just like Gidget).

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST FOR A WEEKEND AWAY AND WHAT IS INCLUDED? Three surf 1.5 hour lessons in uncrowded waves with a small group of six. Surfboard and wetsuit hire also included for the whole weekend. Not only yummy but also very healthy organic super food. You’ll get two brekkies, two lunches and one dinner and welcome snacks when you arrive on Friday. Two nights in a gorgeous holiday house in Manyana – three hours south of Sydney. The cost of the weekend starts from $390 and it covers a pretty house, yummy food, surf gear and lessons. The costs may vary slightly depending on seasonal availability of accommodation.

CAFFE’ SOSPESO (SUSPENDED COFFEE) BEGAN IN ITALY. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO HELP BRING ATTENTION TO IT HERE? I felt a need to spread the word about the initiative. I contacted cafès, bakeries and restaurants and worked with homeless shelters and other service organisations who work with those in need. Really, the driving force has been to do something good for a fellow human being. THE SUSPENDED COFFEE MOVEMENT IS RELATIVELY NEW HERE IN AUSTRALIA, BUT IT’S GAINING MOMENTUM. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR IT? I would love to see the concept widely accepted and available to those who it is really designed for; those in need. I’d love to see it not only in major cities, but regional areas as well. Australia is the country which has taken this concept up the most passionately out of anywhere in the world. I love that passion which is driving this forward. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING, OR PLAN TO DO, TO MAKE YOUR VISION A REALITY?

I have been in constant contact with cafès, bakeries, restaurants to get them on board as Suspended Coffee supporters. I have been in touch with service organisations dealing with those in need to make sure the word is spread. We have a website www.suspendedcoffee. com.au and a Facebook page www. facebook.com/suspendedcoffeeaust The general public are also helping to spread the word and I am supplying flyers and other supporting documents such as proposals to business owners which will aid them in helping the cause. I’ve also been in contact with John Sweeney in Ireland who is pushing this initiative worldwide to tap into this as a whole movement.

My second was when a lady told me that she went in to buy herself a coffee and pay for a Suspended Coffee. The person behind her was in there asking for a Suspended Coffee. This woman saw firsthand how she was helping someone else. Definitely also seeing the likes on Facebook, the hits on the website; it was fantastic seeing people getting on board. The other fabulous moments are in the simple phone calls from business owners saying “I’ve heard about this. How can I help?” DESCRIBE SUSPENDED COFFEE IN ONE SENTENCE. Restoring

HAVE YOU WITNESSED THE DIRECT IMPACT IT HAS ON PEOPLES’ LIVES? IF SO, CAN YOU THINK OF A MEMORABLE MOMENT? My first ‘wow, this has promise’ moment was after my initial email to a number of businesses to ask if they would like to take part. Six minutes later, I got a response from our first business to come on board, Red Door Bakery in Adelaide.

WHAT FEATURED IN YOUR FIRST PHOTOGRAPH? I can't remember the first photograph I ever took but I can recall the first time I ever got really creative with a camera and used it as an art form. I must have been eleven or twelve years old and I shot my friends at school mucking around and posing for me, then processed the film in the school darkroom. I wish I knew were those prints were now. You can only look at one photo for the rest of your life. It would be... I actually surprised myself when an image actually popped up in my mind to answer this question. I wouldn't think I’d be able to choose just one. I keep thinking of a black and white shot of Kate Moss from the 90s by Bruce Weber where she is topless and playfully blowing bubbles in the full harsh sunlight. I love everything about that image. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON LIFE? Be

thing and then I realised that I actually felt better for not having red meat in my life anyway. Over the past two to three years, it became a much bigger thing for me ethically and I started to cut all other meats such as fish and seafood out altogether. During this time I got more involved in websites such as PETA and began to research other animal related food products and even started to question how my much loved clothing and accessories were made. I was so horrified to learn the cruelty that went into making everything from my deodorant and cosmetics to my cleaning products, and clothing etc. I never even thought to question where the feathers in my quilt came from... ignorance and denial are the only things that I really can put it down to. So there it began and here I am now - I have cut all animal related foods, clothing/ accessories and other products out of my life and have been committed to being vegan for about a year which amazingly means that according to research, this past year alone I have already saved almost 200 animals!!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A VEGAN AND WHY?

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO SHOP?

I guess I’ve subconsciously been working my way towards being a vegan for quite a few years now. I ate almost only seafood and very a minimal amount of chicken on and off for around 12 years. It actually began as an ethical

Online for sure. And almost always on ASOS. I can spend hours on there at a time; I think it's a little bit of an obsession!

WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU THE MOST? Probably Frida Kahlo. Almost 10 years ago now, I profiled her for my year 12 final art project as one of four powerful female figures that represented something important to me. I just love that she had no filter or thought to censor herself. And she had such a strong mind to express herself and what she believed in despite her life struggles. It keeps me wanting to do bigger and better things. FAVOURITE THINKING SPOT? I used to climb onto the roof of my old house but I'm now in an apartment and I have yet to find a suitable replacement although there are a few headlands with amazing 180 degree views of the ocean near my place that I do visit on occasion to think. WHAT IS YOUR NEXT EXCITING PROJECT? It's still very early days so I can't give away much but I am looking into something that combines a few of my passions – photography, animals and fashion and doing something positive to help make some real change. SAY HI TO HYBRIDS The hybrid car is one of the few automotive specimens in existence that falls into the vacuum between moving lunchbox and semi-decent mode of transport. It’s not quite a car, it’s not quite a trundle. If, like us at the Future Magazine, you’ve shunned the humble hybrid car, perhaps it’s time to reconsider. Is there perhaps more behind the eco-friendly headlights of the hybrid car? We decided to delve deeper to get the go on hybrids.

WHAT IS IT?

A hybrid car, as its name suggests, is half-way between a regular fuel efficient car and an electrically powered vehicle. Containing two motors, one electrically powered, one petrol powered, it harnesses the braking energy to store it on an onboard battery through special regenerative braking systems.

PROS AND CONS

So why spend the extra thousands to get one of these vehicular fence-sitters? The electric motor is perfect for stop-go, moving parking-lot type situations. When idle, the engine switches off entirely and doesn’t expel any exhaust fumes; obviously a win for lessening smog and carbon emissions alike. Likewise, the petrol powered motor kicks in at about 70kms and gives the same power output and sensation as a regular car. Added to this is the clever technology that allows the petrol powered motor to recharge the electric motor whenever it is switched on. Considering the ever-increasing heights of petrol prices, the notable disparity in petrol consumption in comparison to regular cars (25%-35% less than the most fuel efficient cars such as the Honda Civic and roughly half of the average ‘family car’) is yet another plus.

Unfortunately, the complex technology involved in powering hybrids doesn’t come cheap. Compared to the fuel-efficient petrol powered vehicles that cost around $14 000 - $17,000, hybrids are approximately $5000 – $10,000 more expensive. Added to this, increased risk of mechanical failures due to the complexity of the technology is not inconsiderable. It’s estimated that the money saved from reduced petrol consumption would be around $2500 a year making it unclear how much value for money consumers are really being offered.
