ANY EXCITING UPCOMING PROJECTS? I just recently had my first solo show "Return To Huldra's Wood" at Edmund Pearce Gallery in Melbourne. The show was made up of a series of images exploring old world Scandinavian Folk Lore. I will be having another show in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in the very near future.

Recently a trip to Japan opened my eyes to their way of living collectively as a society and not so individually, as is prevalent here in Australia. CA N YO U T E L L U S A B O U T YO U R B R A N D A N D H OW IT CAME ABOUT? My partner, Dean King, and I started making candles around 2008. It took a year to get the current range of 11 fragrances. There is quite a lot of science behind the craft. Blending fragrances is one part of it, but making sure they work together and then burn in the wax is a whole other headache. We only use pure soy wax without any nasty additives such as paraffin. H O W D I D Y O U FA L L I N T O C A N D L E M A K I N G ? S O W H AT ' S T H E S T O R Y B E H I N D I LOVE MR. MITTENS? HOW DID THE IDEA COME ABOUT? In 2007, I started knitting again. I just got inspired and drawn to it when my friend Kim took me to a little knitting cafe in New York where they sell yarn and supplies and people knit together while having cake and coffee. So lovely! After that more and more friends asked me to knit them something so it kind of evolved over time. After moving to Australia and feeling a bit lost, my partner pushed me to take a chance and launch ‘I Love Mr. Mittens’ as a label. W H AT M A K E S Y O U R K N I T W E A R S TA N D O U T ? I think the simple combination of stitches, choices in yarn and colours make it stand out. And of course the fact that it is hand knitted! WHY KNITWEAR?

14

My mum always tried to teach us how to sew, but I just had no interest in it. The patterns looked complicated with a million different

lines running through each other, and the noisy sewing machine. I think I like the calmness of hand knitting. It’s hypnotizing and I just think it’s amazing to see the transition of a pile of yarn into a garment. W H AT A R E Y O U R P L A N S F O R T H E FUTURE OF I LOVE MR. MITTENS? At the moment I’m busy with the next winter collection. It is all hand knitted with super soft chunky wool. I’m very excited about this! The collection will also have different sweaters and a cardigan. The cotton collection is also staying, with different styles and colors each year. W H AT A R E Y O U D O I N G W H E N Y O U ' R E NOT KNITTING? I really like to cook. I love trying out new recipes, buying new cookbooks and cooking a bunch of dishes with my partner. I`m also a little addicted to every possible fashion and interior magazine. Our house is full of magazines. I also love going out for breakfast. It`s so good in Australia! W H AT W E R E T H E I N F L U E N C E S F O R YO U R C U R R E N T CO L L E C T I O N ? Going back to basics. Coming up with good winter staples meant going to the knitting experts – who knows better than the local grannies who love their knitting and have years of experience.

I GRE W U P W IT H T H E N O IS E O F A S E W ING M AC H IN E IN T H E BAC KGRO U N D O R M Y M U M K N IT T ING IN F RO N T O F T H E T E L E V IS IO N .

W H AT ’ S Y O U R C R E AT I V E BACKGROUND? My mother and grandmother are both experts in sewing, knitting and crochet. I grew up with the noise of a sewing machine in the background or my mum knitting in front of the television. Even now they still do some sort of handwork each day. I’ve always had a interest in fashion and fashion design, but I am terrible at drawing and reading patterns. Knitting just works better for me. I did a few summer courses at Central Saint Martins in London to learn more about different directions you could go to in fashion, but in the end knitting is just my passion and something I just never get bored of.

H AV E Y O U M E T A N Y C H A L L E N G E S W I T H YO U R N E W L A B E L? It took me a long time to find a good supplier. The quality of the Pima cotton and wool has to be perfect. Everything gets shipped from Peru. It would be nice to find an Australian supplier to keep everything local. Working with older people was also a bit of a challenge. You have to be very patient. Now, though, every knitter has their specialty and they just work at their own pace and time. I do spend a lot of time these days sorting out all the grannies as they live all over Perth. I supply and pick up stock for them. Another challenge is also selling the ‘I love Mr. Mittens’ philosophy. A lot of people buy cheap beanies and scarves that are machine knitted with synthetic yarns made in third world countries in poor conditions. Beanies can take up to 8 hours and some scarves even take over 20 hours to knit by hand. That`s why ‘heartworking’ describes the brand perfectly. Every piece has taken a lot of time and passion. If you don’t love knitting, you can’t do this all day, every day. W H E R E D I D T H E N A M E FO R YO U R LABEL COME FROM? A book with cat names. It’s a bit of an out-ofcontrol joke. I thought about changing the name many times but that would be the like changing your kids name after a couple of years because you suddenly stopped liking it.

Mostly I've got salad greens and herbs growing in my portable Webber salad bowl. There’s a fair bit of mint, verbena and sages for tea, and spuds. This time of year I'm a bit more focused on making good compost and preparing the soil for Spring. I've just begun striking some seedlings in preparation for Spring as well. There are also plenty of weeds.

A lot of hard work. Awe-inspiring. It was such a privilege working with Jill Dupleix, Simon & Madeleine from ARIA, Remo and the entire TEDxSydney team. They totally bought into the vision, provided loads of support and made the whole experience amazing. That's not to say that it wasn't a mission – it was, but a mission well worth the effort.

The creativity of the Grow It Local community is also really inspiring; you could literally spend hours poking around on the Grow gallery getting inspired. Hopefully, people are realizing how much fun growing things can be and it's not something that only old people or 'experts' can do. Gardening gear has also become slightly more fashionable.

It's not easy to find a 100% vegan, natural and chemical free foundation that actually works, yet we had the pleasure of sampling the Larissa Bright 100% Mineral Vegan Cream Foundation and we were delighted with the results. One of the first ever Mineral Cream foundations developed by Larissa Bright and her scientific team of chemists over the past 3.5 years, contains no preservatives or parabens, is hyper-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, water-resistant, talc-free and is made entirely of minerals, which when pulped become a silk-like powder. These minerals, by nature, scatter light, so they are deflected from the skin rather than absorbed by it, making for a natural and glowy finish. The pure vegan ingredients form a moisture rich complex to nurture, balance and enhance the skin for a flawless finish without sacrificing the health of your skin. Moisturising ingredients like Shea butter and Jojoba make the foundation not only nurture and hydrate the skin for up to 8 hours but also glide on easily for a smooth application. Its skin balancing and skin enhancing formula improves skin texture and leaves a smooth and natural finish and a healthy glow on your skin. The entire Larissa Bright Australia mineral makeup collection is also certified cruelty free by 'Choose Cruelty Free Australia Pty Ltd' and is available at www.larissabright.com.au

HOW DID VEGE THREADS BEGIN? Vege Threads began late last year. After working in fashion for a few years, including for an international eco label, I decided to pursue my passion for sustainable business and offer an eco alternative within the Australian fashion industry. After a great deal of research I decided to develop my first range in Indonesia. Vege Threads is my way of offering organic clothing alternatives whilst also educating customers about why choosing organic and ethical products are important. I then chose to link the label to a charity that I had been working with in Indonesia to feed some of the profits of the label back to the poorer communities of the island. Y O U R FAV O U R I T E FA B R I C S A N D WHY? I really love all natural fibres. Cotton jersey, bamboo and hemp are my top three. The foundation works in the poor communities in the north, assisting with medical aid, housing, sponsorship programs, English courses and more.

Accessibility is the main issue behind the growth of organic and ethical brands. It’s

not about being competitive, but sharing the information so that companies, big and small, can implement better methods and environmentally friendly resources. H OW D I D YO G A V I L L A G E CO M E TO B E ? Yoga Village started as a tiny seed in my head when I was teaching around Sydney in various studios and gyms. I realised that there weren’t many places in Sydney offering an intimate class where students could actually learn. As a teacher, I found it frustrating that in a large class I too was restricted with what I could actually teach, and how I could touch on each student’s needs. The seed grew and grew, and finally, when my Grandma passed away (she was a very strong woman by the way) I felt she had left me her strength, which is what gave me the final push I needed to go and find a beautiful space. W H AT D O E S Y O G A V I L L A G E O F F E R ? Yoga Village offers yoga in its raw and authentic form, without all the chitchat or the trimmings. At Yoga Village, good teaching is the priority, so students always rave about our teachers! We offer small classes that really give the teachers the opportunity to teach each person in the room, to get around to everyone and to make sure that each student is challenged and moving forward. We also offer incredible workshops and retreats. W H AT I S Y O U R P H I L O S O P H Y ?

My philosophy on yoga is that it can change your whole world if you let it. Yoga is always ready for you, but you have to be ready for yoga before it can really change you. Yoga is about stretching not only the body; it is also about stretching our mind and spirit, about discovering all corners of our being. That can be confronting, it can be unpleasant at times but in the end it brings you amazing freedom! My philosophy on life is to dive right in! Don’t live in fear of your dreams… Go out there and chase them! H O W D I D Y O U FA L L I N L O V E W I T H Y O G A ? I fell in to a job that was really high pressure that I really didn’t like. In fact, I HATED my job! As a way to get out of the office each day, I started going to yoga classes at a little place across the road from my office. I went every lunchtime and soon realised that it was the most amazing part of my day. I started to feel that even though I hated my job, if I went to yoga each day I could handle it. I was happier with everything I did – even the things I didn’t like. That was when I knew it was true love! S O W H AT ’ S T H I S A B O U T Y O U R S P R I N G Y O G A R E T R E AT ? W H Y S H O U L D E V E RYO N E G O A LO N G ? Retreats are good for so many reasons. If you are stressed or over worked, they offer a chance to unwind. For those who want to learn more about yoga or improve their practice, a retreat is an opportunity to go really deep. Retreats also offer a new perspective on things by removing yourself from your regular life and changing your routine to include things that promote a clearer mind. Retreats help you see your situation more clearly. Most of all, everyone should come because it’s going to be so much fun! Find out more about the retreat here. W H O I N S P I R ES YO U ? I drink a big glass of water, scrape my tongue, use my neti pot, and then do 10 minutes of oil pulling (swishing oil in the mouth for oral and systemic health benefits). After a quick shower I meditate for 15 minutes and head off to yoga practice for 2 hours. H OW H AS YO G A C H A N G E D YO U R L I F E ? How long have we got? Yoga has changed all aspects of my life, from diet, relationships, health, weight, temperament, and the belief that I can do anything I choose to in this world. This usually involves some grains (quinoa or buckwheat), poached eggs and then some sort of greens. I love to sauté spinach, leeks, mushrooms and broccoli in garlic and coconut oil. HOW DID THE IDEA FOR NICO COME ABOUT? I really felt like there was a gap in the market with not many lingerie options other than the over-thetop or the boring-practical. Nico is designed to fill that gap. W H AT S PA R K E D Y O U R I N T E R E S T I N S U S TA I N A B L E FA S H I O N ? Sustainability has always been important to me on a personal level and I wouldn't have been comfortable starting a business any other way – particularly in an industry that has such a bad track record. It also made sense from a business perspective, as it's such fast-growing market. W H E R E D O E S N I C O S TA N D I N T H E LINGERIE MARKET? Nico fits in between the over-the-top and the boring-practical in the lingerie market. Nico is unique, style driven and for girls with a strong sense of individuality.

T E L L U S A B O U T YO U R L I M I T E D EDITION TEE COLLECTION? We had some fabric left over from our Bright collection and decided to put it to good use rather than wasting it. The tees are a great loose-fitting classic cut and look great on girls and guys. E V E R Y D AY T I P S T O B E S U S TA I N A B L E ?

FAV O U R I T E S U S TA I N A B L E FA B R I C AND WHY? We love using organic cottons as well as bamboo blends. The bamboo in particular has an amazing softness and breathability, which makes it perfect for underwear. The way in which the raw bamboo is grown is significantly more eco-friendly than other fibres such as cotton. The raw bamboo is then put through a viscose process and we source exclusively from suppliers with who are ISO 9000/14000 accredited and have systems in place to reuse and recycle the chemicals used in the process.

Start to ask where products come from and under what conditions they were made. Exploitation is rife in the fashion industry and it's time to demand more transparency. W H E R E D O YO U T H I N K T H E F U T U R E O F S U S TA I N A B L E FA S H I O N I S G O I N G ? It's a growing market and more and more consumers are demanding accountability and transparency from brands. I think it will continue to grow to the point where even the more stubborn of brands will be forced to consider sustainability in their businesses.

T E L L U S A B O U T YO U R E CO - H O M E ! My husband and I bought a two-storey commercial building in Ultimo with a vision of transforming it into a five-bedroom family home. We had an opportunity to create something to suit our needs and be ecologically sound. Both of us work in the construction industry (Kate is a space planner and Tom is a plumber) so we designed and built the place ourselves using our knowledge and experience in sustainability and materials. We demolished everything except the front façade and side party walls of our terrace house. Construction took just seven months. We moved in with our five children just as our twins were born. W H AT D R E W Y O U T O S O L A R ENERGY? Solar is free and readily available. We like the idea of being self-sufficient with power and water. At first we thought solar might not suit us because of overshadowing from a nearby high rise building, but in fact it has little impact. The cost of solar panels has come down considerably from when we installed them three years ago. If you have a roof that is suitable, it’s a no-brainer.

E ASY T I P S TO M A K E YO U R H O M E M O R E E C O - F R I E N D LY ? We installed double-glazing to keep minimise traffic noise and temperature transfer. The improvement in comfort levels in winter and summer has been significant. We love our worm farm and so do the plants in our garden, which are thriving on the fertiliser. We recently adopted a couple of chicks from our daughter’s school’s hatching program. They make adorable pets that eat our scraps and will soon be producing nourishing eggs. W H AT ’ S Y O U R P H I L O S O P H Y ? We are only on the planet for a relatively short time so we need to take care of it and pass it on in a better condition than the way we received it. The next ten years will be critical for climate change and reaching reduced carbon emission targets. We can make a change if we all pull in the same direction. Look after everyone and everything.

W H AT I N F L U E N C E D Y O U R D E C I S I O N T O M A K E Y O U R H O M E S U S TA I N A B L E ? We understand the importance of sustainability so this was an opportunity to implement better practices. There are obvious cost savings from generating our own power but the design of cross ventilation, double glazing and a light well reduces our need for power and provides greater comfort levels. Plus there’s a satisfaction in producing your own electricity and re-using water: it feels good! E V E R Y D AY T I P S T O B E S U S TA I N A B L E ? Catch public transport instead of driving. Use your local amenities as much as possible to encourage walking. You also see more people, which creates a feeling of community. Be a good role model for your kids and neighbours. Get a worm farm to reduce your green waste and create fertiliser. Invite flatmates to live in your spare room. We have a lovely Scottish couple living with us who bring interesting stories and everyone seems to enjoy them. If you need to buy a car, choose a hybrid.
