THE SPORT OF SKIING

Why is Skiing one of the most popular winter sports in the world?

Ever created a snow angel? Perhaps you believe that making a snowman is more enjoyable. You might also want to sled down a hill. Playing in the snow is something that both children and adults love to do! You might even be familiar with skiing if you reside somewhere with a chilly climate.

Do you enjoy skiing? It is considered by many to be among the top winter sports. Nothing compares to tearing down a mountaintop while riding on a foot of snow. You can feel like you're flying as the wind lashes your face!

When did skiing start?

You can't really tell. Some historians assert that skiing predates the invention of the wheel. That is supported by evidence from prehistoric humans. The first skis ever discovered were in Russia and may date back to 8000 B.C.E. Other places, like China and Norway, have also reported finding numerous old skis.

The original skis were designed for use in transportation. Skis were necessary for early humans to move around in locations with a lot of snowfall. Since the time of the Roman Empire, skis have been used for hunting by the Sami people of Norway. The Vikings in Scandinavia also moved with the aid of skis.

Since at least the 13th century, the military has also utilized skis. Soldiers have traditionally used skis to travel in Norway, Finland, Russia, Poland, and Sweden. Even now, many soldiers train for ski combat.

Best ski places in the world

1. Whistler Blackcomb, Canada

When it comes to ski resorts, Whistler appears on nearly all "World Top" lists. People enjoy returning to this resort year after year because of the amazing terrain, which provides a wide range of skiing possibilities for all skill levels. You won't get tired with the more than 32 square kilometers of the snow-covered mountainside and the more than 200 pistes.

2. Zermatt, Switzerland

We just cannot discuss the top ski destinations without mentioning Zermatt. With the best views of the Alps, it is the highest resort. Almost everywhere on the slopes provides a view of the magnificent Matterhorn peak! The Matterhorn Glacier offers year-round skiing in addition to having the highest vertical drop in Switzerland. If that wasn't enough to persuade you, adrenaline seekers looking to venture off-piste can enter through Zermatt. Therefore, everyone may find something here.

3. Banff, Canada

Spend a winter living and working in Banff if you want to see the renowned Rocky Mountains. There are several opportunities in the hospitality industry where you may network with other avid travelers. Here, you may enjoy world-class skiing and other winter activities, and many local jobs come with benefits like a free season pass.

Have you ever taken a ski trip? If so, you are aware of how much fun it can be. Nowadays, a lot of people like snowboarding, a more recent invention.

OF SEASONAL DEPRESSION: HOW TO FIGHT IT OFF?
SYMPTOMS

You may have the classic signs of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression brought on by changes in the length of the day and the weather that primarily occur in the winter. If shorter days and weather changes sap your energy and make you feel down. What causes SAD in some people?

Although experts are unsure, some believe that seasonal changes interrupt the body's circadian rhythm, the 24-hour clock that controls how we behave while awake and asleep, causing us to occasionally feel invigorated and alert and occasionally drowsy. The disruption of hormones that control sleep, mood, and emotions of well-being, like serotonin and melatonin, by the change of the seasons is another idea.

Symptoms of seasonal depression

The following are some typical indications and symptoms of SAD, regardless of its underlying causes:

1- Depression-like emotions pervade the majority of each day, on a seasonal basis.

2- Experiencing fatigue or low energy

3- Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities

4- Appetite adjustments or weight gain

5- Sleeping
excessively

Ways to fight seasonal depression

Here are a few strategies you might want to think about in order to manage SAD.

Medications can help

Antidepressant medication helps some SAD patients, especially when symptoms are severe. The antidepressant bupropion, sold under the brand names Wellbutrin XL and Aplenzin, has an extended-release formulation that may help persons with a history of SAD avoid depressive episodes. To treat SAD, other antidepressants may also be often used. Your doctor may advise beginning antidepressant therapy before your symptoms generally appear each year.

Additionally, he or she might advise you to keep taking the antidepressant after your symptoms have typically subsided. Remember that it can take a few weeks before you get all of an antidepressant’s benefits. Additionally, you might need to test a few various medications before you find the one that suits you well and has the fewest adverse effects.

Home remedies

Make your surroundings more luminous and sunny. Open your blinds, trim any sun-blocking tree branches, or install skylights in your home. While at home or at the office, sit closer to windows that are light.

Step outdoors. Go for a long walk, have lunch in a park close by, or just relax on a bench in the sunshine. Outdoor light is beneficial, even on chilly or foggy days, especially if you spend some time outside within two hours of waking up. Stress and anxiety can worsen the symptoms of SAD, therefore exercise and other physical activities can assist. Additionally, feeling better about yourself due to fitness might improve your mood. Make sleeping habits normal. Establish regular wake-up and sleep hours each day. Reduce or stop napping and oversleeping, especially for SAD which begins in the fall or winter.

Get more light

Start waking an hour earlier to adjust your internal clock and make your days longer and more light-filled. Purchase a lightbox or add more lighting to your home. It's important to note that although the FDA has not authorized lightboxes, that doesn't mean they are ineffective. Before making an investment, talk to your provider to make sure you are choosing the best one for you. Some SAD symptoms, such as low energy, decreased productivity, and desperation, may be lessened by it.

It might be time to speak with your doctor or get in touch with a behavioral health specialist if you've had symptoms of SAD for longer than two weeks and lifestyle modifications aren't working to improve them. is a serious disorder, and the longer it goes without treatment, the more difficult the recovery will be.

TIPS AND TRICKS TO KEEP YOUR HOUSE PLANTS ALIVE

Learn how to keep houseplants alive during the dark days in winter as chilly temperatures and hard days can make it challenging for them to survive—even inside. Short days, unpredictable freezing temperatures, low humidity, and little sunlight throughout the winter make it difficult for indoor plants to develop. Here are crucial steps you can take to keep indoor plants alive during the winter.

Modify watering schedule

Winter is the time to cut back on watering because low temperatures slow down plant growth. Few plants actually go entirely dormant, and too much water during a dormant period can be exceedingly harmful to the plants, leading to root rot. So, to keep the plants well hydrated, stick to a sparing watering regimen.

By sticking a finger into the topsoil, you may determine whether your plant needs watering. It's time to water the plant if the soil feels dry up to an inch or so below the surface. Hot or cold water should not be used since it can shock the roots. Water that is only lukewarm will do!

Raise humidity

Wintertime humidity levels drop to about 10%, whereas plants require about 40% to thrive. The following actions can help you keep the humidity level constant.

The placement of a humidifier near your plants. Place your plants in a basin that is filled with rocks and water. Misting is another alternative for moisture maintenance, however, it might not be as effective.

Skip fertilizers

Many plants relax throughout the winter because they go into dormancy and scarcely grow in colder climes. So, stop using fertilizer till the start of spring. Restart fertilizing as soon as you see fresh growth to support them for the upcoming growing season.

Maintain the temperature

Provide warmth while bringing plants indoors during the winter; anything above 50 F (10 C) is OK. The optimal temperature for plants is between 65 and 75 F (18 and 23 C) during the day and 55 to 65 F (14 and 17 C) at night (13-18 C). Protect your plants against temperatures below 50°F (10°C), since they may suffer damage. Protect your plants from chilly draughts as well. Remember that prolonged exposure to cold or heat or continual temperature change is deadly to plants.

Prune and re-pot

Pruning should start right now. Again, depending on the sort of plant you have, trimming may not be necessary at all for succulents. But now is the perfect time to add vining plants to your indoor plant collection. Succulents often do not require repotting either, but woody plants usually go dormant in the colder months. Repotting woody plants now will ensure that they are prepared to begin blooming and growing come spring.

Watch for pests

Wintertime elements that can encourage pests include greater heat from heaters, less sunlight, and increased humidity from humidifiers. pests such as mealybugs, fungus gnats, and spider mites. Keep an eye out for them on your plants and take action to get rid of them when they do.

All year long, having plants around your house is a terrific idea. Plants must, however, also be taken care of throughout these months in order for them to be functional. You may have an indoor garden that endures if you keep this in mind and do the appropriate steps.

To keep the plants well hydrated, stick to a sparing watering regimen.

WORKPLACES DOING TO IMPROVE THEIR EMPLOYEES WELLNESS POST COVID?
WHAT ARE

Recognizing vulnerability

Most of us discovered throughout the pandemic that everyone has weaknesses and a life outside of work, and that's alright. The most important thing businesses can do for their employees is to have faith in them and assist them in realizing the importance of finding a work-life balance.

Mediation spaces

It's important to recognize the relationship between breathing and meditation as we slowly recover from a respiratory pandemic. Improved breathing techniques are a common emphasis of meditation exercises, whether it's belly breathing or inhaling through the nose and expelling through the mouth. Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who meditated reported feeling better and having easier breathing than those who didn't.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly decreased the number of office workers. Many people might never return to full-time, in-office work even if remote work fades. While some businesses might renegotiate their leases, many will still be stuck paying for unoccupied property. It is not difficult to convert an empty office into a space for meditation.

Four-day work week

Belgian workers acquired the opportunity to work a full workweek in four days rather than the customary five without losing pay in February. On November 21, the law went into effect, giving workers the option of working four or five days a week. However, this does not suggest that they would work less; rather, it just means that they will spread out their working hours fewer days. The reduction of carbon emissions, ease of parenthood, and improved quality of life for those with illnesses or disabilities would all result from shortened workweek.

Provide and ask for feedback

Managers need to provide feedback and more room both during and after this pandemic. Don't take it for granted that your staff will talk to you about their worries or feel free to express their emotions. Ask questions instead to learn what they require from you. What obstacles must people overcome?

Do they understand how to get there and are they clear about the desired results? How are they handling the current circumstances? Managers should also actively provide feedback. To keep their teams content and engaged, they should offer timely feedback frequently.

Warning to anyone thinking of taking up a new diet in 2023

Don't Delay Your Mammogram After Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine

Dietitians across the UK have said they are constantly trying to convince patients to not take up fad diets.

The British Dietetic Association (BDA) has urged Brits to say 'No Thank You' to fad diets. Experts warned that many of the plans shared can’t be sustained long-term and can actually cause more harm than good.

This can lead to yoyo dieting, muscle loss, nutrient deficiencies and ultimately metabolic adaptation, which can cause more weight to be regained in the long-term, they said.

Patients who were recently vaccinated or received a booster for COVID-19 can experience axillary adenopathy, or swelling in the lymph nodes of their armpit, the Society for Breast Imaging (SBI) states.

While swollen lymph nodes is a relatively common side effect of getting the COVID-19 vaccine, seeing or feeling a lump around the breast can cause anxiety. SBI shares that healthcare providers can alleviate fears by telling patients, "Vaccines of all types can result in temporary swelling of the lymph nodes, which is a sign that the body is making antibodies in response to the vaccine as intended."
