Message from the Leadership Team
2014: Getting Stronger
This report details our accomplishments in 2014, and it looks to the future as New Heights continues to build on our achievements and head into an exciting year—our 10th anniversary in 2015. In the following pages, you will see the results of the hard work put forth by our student-athletes and their families this past year. You will also read about the tireless efforts exhibited by our amazing team of board members, staff, coaches, tutors and volunteers. In 2014, New Heights’ ninth anniversary, we built organizational capacity as we implemented our new Strategic Plan and focused on growth and enhancement. This past year, we expanded our Board of Directors, strengthened our staff, focused on our Summer Academy expansion, and continued to provide our high school and college preparation services to over 200 youth. We are continuing to identify new ways to educate and empower inner-city youth to be leaders, champions, and student-athletes. In a city that only graduates roughly half of its high school students, New Heights proudly graduated 100% of our seniors this year, achieving this milestone every year since 2005. At New Heights, the basketball court continues to be a “classroom” where we encourage our participants to develop and apply leadership skills by challenging them to resolve interpersonal conflicts among teammates; demonstrate teamwork and dedication in training and competition; and display respect toward others. Most importantly, New Heights provides student-athletes direct access to academic and life skill resources that low-income students rarely have. 2014 was also a milestone year, as we raised a record amount of funding—over $1.8M—to support and better serve our student-athletes and their families. We also know that records are always meant to be broken, and to do this, we need your continued support. Whether it is sponsoring a team, volunteering as a tutor or coach, or cheering our youth in competition, our student-athletes will only continue to scale New Heights with your support. Thank you for positively impacting the lives of hundreds of promising NYC youth! In Appreciation,
Mark Patricof Board Chairman
Ted Smith Executive Director

New Heights Programs Basketball and Leadership Development: New Heights fields 17 teams that compete locally and regionally, and in some cases, nationally. Basketball serves as a hook that engages our participants in our academic programs. In addition, the basketball court is a “classroom” where leadership and life skills are developed. Academic Support: New Heights runs a comprehensive academic support program for our student-athletes. Each participant in need receives support to stay on track for promotion, ultimately leading to high school and college matriculation. High School Assist helps our fourth through eighth grade studentathletes succeed in elementary/middle school and leverage that success to gain admission to excellent college preparatory high schools. Services include: test preparation, high school visits, financial aid workshops, and individualized counseling to support students and families.

PROFILES OF SUCCESS TYSHAWN MYLES An Overachiever
THE SCOUTING REPORT Years with New Heights: 6 High School: WHEELS College: Drexel University
After joining New Heights in 8th grade, Tyshawn went on to WHEELS (Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School), where he was coached by former New Heights’ staff member Josh Krinsky. There, he led his team to the PSAL A Championship his senior season. After working hard in the classroom and on the basketball court – in addition to overcoming personal challenges – Ty is now a freshman at Drexel University on a full athletic scholarship.
“New Heights isn’t just an AAU basketball program, it’s a place where you build life skills and friendships that last a lifetime.”
OUMOU KANOUTE A Triple Threat
THE SCOUTING REPORT Years with New Heights: 4 High School: Westminster School
Oumou is currently a sophomore at the Westminster School (CT), where she receives a full scholarship and runs track and plays on the girls’ basketball team. She maintains a 3.5 GPA and is one of the most popular and well-liked students on campus. This past summer, with New Heights’ support, Oumou attended the fourweek New York Code & Design Academy, which is run in partnership with Google. She was also featured on Fox 5 News and said, “My main goal is to grasp as much info as I can and start a club at my school for incoming freshmen and encourage girls to get involved.”
“New Heights has opened so many opportunities for me including having the privilege to attend one of the top 50 boarding schools in the country.”
REMEMBERING SHERRI While there was much to celebrate at New Heights in 2014, we also suffered a great loss. The New Heights family was saddened by the passing of a true champion of our youth and an inspirational leader of our organization for over a decade – Sherri King O’Connor. Sherri started with New Heights as a volunteer tutor over 10 years ago and her passion for youth and education was infectious. After years of working directly with our student-athletes, Sherri transitioned to a leadership role on our Board of Directors in 2008. While splitting her time between NYC and Charlottesville, VA, Sherri always made time for New Heights and made our young people a priority. Sherri is an alum of Duke University and received her MBA from NYU. Sherri went on to have a very successful career on Wall Street, making an impact at many of the country’s top firms. Yet, her passions always focused on two main areas – her family and education. Sherri and her family – husband Pat and three wonderful children, Stella, Bo and Knox – will always remain a part of our family. Sherri’s impact lives on at New Heights and she will continue to be a shining light helping guide our programs and youth.

ROSHARD BRYANT A Leader
THE SCOUTING REPORT Years with New Heights: 9 High School: Suffield Academy College: Amherst College
As a recent graduate of Wesleyan University, Jack applied and was accepted to the Americorps VISTA program. Through a new partnership between New Heights and Americorps, Jack has the distinction of being our first VISTA hire. A native of Brooklyn and a Poly Prep alum, Jack has returned home to make a positive mark on his community and New Heights. He made an immediate impact in a variety of roles, but his focus has been on program data and evaluation. As a huge sports fan and student-athlete himself, Jack has brought one of our core values – Teamwork – to the New Heights family.
After joining New Heights as a sophomore while attending a public high school in the Bronx, Roshard and his family decided he wanted to make a change and attend a boarding school. With the support of New Heights’ High School Assist program, he chose to attend Suffield Academy (CT) over several other top boarding school options. He thrived there and moved on to Amherst College (MA). Roshard has stayed involved with New Heights in various capacities while in college and this past year became the first program alum to serve as our Summer Academy Director at the Loyola School.
“I am continuously inspired by the successes of our studentathletes and the devotion of my fellow staff members.”
“New Heights helped me develop the leadership skills necessary to oversee Summer Academy.”
