Message from the Leadership Team
2015: 10 Years of Impact
2015 was a special year for our organization as we celebrated our 10 Year Anniversary as a non-profit. As we reflect on the past 10 years of success, we are inspired by our accomplishments and the achievements of our student-athletes, but also motivated by our ability to expand and strengthen our services in the next 10 years (and beyond). In the following pages, you will see the results of the hard work put forth by our student-athletes and their families this past year. You will also read about the tireless efforts exhibited by our amazing team of board members, staff, coaches, tutors and volunteers. In 2015, we built organizational capacity as we implemented our Strategic Plan and focused on growth and enhancement. We strengthened our Board of Directors, enhanced our already highperforming staff, expanded our Summer Academy enrollment for the fifth consecutive year, piloted a 4th grade cohort, and continued to provide our high school and college preparation services to over 210 youth. As part of our 10 Year Anniversary, we launched Career Assist, a program dedicated to ensuring our alumni not only matriculate to college, but graduate and leave with a diploma and career-ready skills. We are continuing to identify new ways to educate and empower innercity youth to be leaders, champions, and student-athletes. In a city that only graduates just over half of its high school students, New Heights proudly graduated 100% of our seniors again, achieving this milestone every year since 2005. At New Heights, the basketball court continues to be a “classroom” where we encourage our participants to develop and apply leadership skills by challenging them to resolve interpersonal conflicts among teammates; demonstrate teamwork and dedication in training and competition; and display respect toward others. Most importantly, New Heights provides student-athletes direct access to academic and life skill resources that low-income students rarely have. 2015 was also a milestone year as we continue to grow the organization and seed the future. We raised a record amount—over $1.9M— in Fiscal Year 2015 to better serve our student-athletes and their families. We also hosted a magical 10 Year Anniversary Celebration in October, raising over $1M at the event to support our work and the deserving youth in our program. Thank you to the whole New Heights family for making 2015 a groundbreaking and inspirational year. You continue to positively impact the lives of hundreds of promising NYC youth! We would love your continued involvement in 2016 - whether it is sponsoring a team, volunteering as a tutor or coach, or cheering our youth on in competition. Our student-athletes will only continue to scale New Heights with your support.

OUR MISSION To educate and empower promising inner-city youth to be leaders, champions and studentathletes by developing the skills necessary for success in high school, college and life.
WHAT WE DO Provide an integrated sports-based youth development model for inner-city NYC youth with a passion for basketball. We harness the love of the game by fielding local and travel teams and supplying them with academic enrichment and college preparatory programs along with community-service initiatives.
New Heights Programs Basketball and Leadership Development: New Heights fields 21 teams that compete locally and regionally, and in some cases, nationally. Basketball serves as a hook that engages our participants in our academic programs. In addition, the basketball court is a “classroom” where leadership and life skills are developed. Academic Support: New Heights runs a comprehensive academic support program for our student-athletes. Each participant in need receives support to stay on track for promotion, ultimately leading to high school and college matriculation. High School Assist: helps our fourth through eighth grade studentathletes succeed in elementary/middle school and leverage that success to gain admission to college preparatory high schools. Services include: test preparation, high school visits, financial aid workshops, and individualized counseling to support students and families. College Assist: provides our high school student-athletes with the individual support necessary to gain admission to top colleges and universities. Services include SAT/ACT prep, school visits, financial aid workshops, life skills development and NCAA recruiting guidance. Summer Academy: develops our students’ academic, athletic and leadership skills through a full-day, six-week program for rising fifthninth graders. Hosted at the Loyola School in Manhattan, the academic programming is focused on improving students’ Math, Language Arts and Leadership skills, while promoting the New Heights values of Teamwork, Respect, Excellence and Effort (TREE). Career Assist: starting with the high school Class of 2015, we will provide our college students with the support and guidance necessary to graduate college and be prepared to begin their professional careers. Services include: College course selection and support in choosing a major, resume building, financial literacy, interview and networking skills, career mentoring, internship assistance and career exposure.

All young athletes will have the values and skills necessary to become leaders in their communities and succeed in life beyond sports.
WHO WE SERVE
NYC youth ages 9-18 from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who have a passion for basketball. Career Assist will extend our reach to serve our youth throughout college, beginning Fall 2015.
OUR IMPACT
For 10 years, our student-athletes have maintained a 100% high school graduation rate, a 98% college matriculation rate and a 75% college graduation rate. Over time, New Heights has helped 271 alums matriculate to college and we currently have 86 alums playing college basketball and 21 playing professionally.

New Heights makes longterm investments in our student-athletes. We support our youth with academic assistance, high quality basketball skill development and a personalized college preparation plan. Our College Bound model enables JR and the other hundreds of youth New Heights serves annually to receive critical skills necessary for life success.

CHANGING THE GAME TAKING YOUTH TO NEW HEIGHTS
On October 8, 2015 New Heights celebrated its 10th Anniversary in style at Capitale in Lower Manhattan. Over 450 people attended our GALA, and the event raised over $1 million to support our organization. Hosted by Peter Rosenberg of Hot 97 and ESPN Radio, New Heights honored a “Starting Five” of superstars – Allan Houston (New York Knicks), Tom Quinlan (RR Donnelley), Jack Grubman (Magee Group), Michelle Leftwich (NBA) and New Heights’ Founder Nick Blatchford (Under Armour). Alums Lance Thomas of the Knicks, Niki Avery, Felix Navarro and Marquis Barnett wowed the crowd and, in total, over 60 alums came out to celebrate a decade of service that New Heights has provided student-athletes in New York City. Special thanks to our incredible Event Co-Chairs Nina Lesavoy and Duane Fiedler. What an amazing night it was!

EW HEIGHTS HELPS: Once N again, New Heights partnered with the New York Common Pantry in Harlem to give back to our community. All of our middle school teams volunteered at the Pantry, serving those in need from our community.

HOUSE: On Saturday, Oct. 17, New Heights hosted its 11th Annual Open House at the JCC in Manhattan as over 20 public, private, parochial and boarding schools shared valuable information with over 50 middle school students, educating them about the high school selection and admission process.

TRIP: New Heights hosted its annual middle school trip to Philadelphia. Over 60 students joined 10 staff members on an exciting day that included stops at the National Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell and the George Mason-St. Joseph’s game that featured two program alums.

SHOOT-A-THON: In May, all 21 teams, including coaches, parents, staff and studentathletes participated in our 2nd Annual Shoot-a-thon held at the Harlem PAL. Our teams collectively raised $75,000 to support College Bound. LINTON PRESIDENTIAL C LIBRARY: New Heights’ 17U boys team, while in Arkansas for a tournament, made a stop at the William J. Clinton Library in Little Rock. While there, the team stopped by the Oval Office and even held its own Cabinet Meeting. EYOND SPORT: New Heights B was recognized for its impact on an international scale in FY2015. We were 1 of 3 shortlisted finalists from Beyond Sport for the UNICEF Sport for Education Award from over 350 programs worldwide. Executive Director Ted Smith traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa to attend the Beyond Sport Summit & Awards in October 2014, and gave a talk on the use of educational programs and tools to tackle social change.
DOYIN ISAAC Doyin Isaac joined New Heights as a freshman in high school and has always been a dedicated student-athlete, often waking up at 5am for workouts on the beach near his home in Coney Island. After graduating from Xaverian High School in the spring, Doyin has enrolled at Baruch College. He has had an amazing year, first being selected as one of two Senior Night speakers at New Heights’ annual function while also being honored by the Bulldog Cares Foundation with their All-Star Award. He is also starting at point guard on Baruch’s men’s basketball team as a freshman. “Always believe in yourself, confidence and hard work will get you where you want to go.”
CHELSEA BAEZ Chelsea started with New Heights when she was in just third grade. Chelsea graduated from Riverdale Country School (’11) and was accepted to Syracuse University. After one year at Syracuse, she decided to continue her undergraduate work at Rutgers University where she is currently working on her degree in Sports Management. She is a New Heights Alum (Class of ’11) and is now a part of our staff working as the new Development & Communications Associate. “I am grateful for New Heights in more ways than one. New Heights has not only given me academic and athletic support but has provided me with the opportunity to meet and form bonds with the people I now call my best friends.”

DAIRY ROJAS Dairy joined New Heights the fall of her 7th grade year. Raised by her grandmother in the Edenwald section of the Bronx, she sought something better for her future. She began traveling over an hour on the train to academic sessions and practice. A diligent student, she wanted to hone her basketball skills with a great organization. Possessed with great quickness and good basketball IQ, she was an instant contributor on her New Heights team. With more hard work, this past spring she was accepted to the Hyde School in Connecticut (Class of 2019). She said,
“Boarding school has been a huge change from public school… more homework and assessments but I’m working on my struggles with the help of the Hyde faculty and my New Heights family.” “I’m thankful for NH giving me this opportunity to attend prep school but more importantly offering me access to a better education.”

Janelle is a New Heights Alum (Class of ’10) and as our Career Assist Coordinator, she is responsible for managing the new alumni program, which works with our recent high school graduates during their transition to college and keeping them connected to the program. She was the 2010 graduating Senior Night speaker and while in college became a Beyond Sport Ambassador, representing New Heights on a global platform. She received her BS in Public Health from Syracuse University (’14) and is currently working on her Masters of Public Health from New York University. “New Heights will always be a part of my family. I am so grateful for a program that has stood by me throughout the years.”

2015 HOOPS HIGHLIGHTS BOYS 17U: Coached by Oz Cross, our 17U boys participated in the Under Armour (UA) Association this past season, winning all four games at the New Orleans session and going 3-1 at Session 2 in Lexington, KY. The team won several games in dramatic comefrom-behind fashion. 16U: Also participating on the UA circuit, the 16Us dominated the regular season, posting a 10-2 record as the top team in their division. This group also traveled to the Fab 48 in Las Vegas to end the season. 15U: The 15U boys traveled with their older brothers to New Orleans and Lexington and finished the season with a trip to Atlanta to the UA Finals. 14U: New Heights fielded two 14U boys teams who worked together to win several major events and finished No. 3 in the country at the AAU Nationals in Orlando. 13U: The 7th grade group, coached by Dave Williams and Paul Campbell won several championships this past season, including Watson and the Washington Heights Invitational. 12U: Led by Coach Aris Martin, our 6th grade team won the Hoop Group Jr. title and made the championship game in several other tournaments. 11U: This squad had a very successful season, winning the Rumble in the Bronx title as well as
BBall Spotlight and two Hoop Group events. In addition, Dave McGee led the team to five other championship games. 10U: Kenny Robinson’s club enjoyed success at the local and regional level, traveling to events in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
GIRLS 17U: Chez Williams’ team had a great season, enjoying success at tournaments in Atlanta, Kentucky, Tennessee and Hampton, VA (where they made the Final Four). 16U: The surprise group of the season, Mike Toro and his crew overachieved all season, beating many higher ranked teams along the way. 15U: First-year New Heights coaches Kelly Dansby and Ralph Colon and their team improved each tournament, culminating with strong performances in July in the Gym Ratz Challenge and USJN events. 13U: Our 8th grade team won several events, including the Rose Classic (twice), DYCD and had a great experience playing “up” against older girls for most of the season. 12U & 11U: Both of these squads won the NJ Sparks Invitational as well as the HoopHall Classic in Springfield to cap off their seasons.

DREAM IS BORN: Founded by Nick Blatchford, the program starts as the Washington Heights Warriors, as part of the Children’s Aid Society, providing after school academic support and basketball skill development.

LET THE MADNESS BEGIN: New Heights hosts its first MADNESS fundraiser, an NCAA viewing party, and that same year begins “Saturday Skills” at Tolentine, offering a weekly basketball and life skills program to the community.
HAPPY DEAL: Lance Thomas becomes the first New Heights student-athlete selected as a McDonald’s All-American. He moves on to Duke University where he wins a National Championship in 2010 as team captain.

IT’S OFFICIAL: New Heights Youth, Inc. is incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit. That same year, the organization relocates to the St. Nicholas of Tolentine School in the Bronx and hosts its first Summer Academy at the prestigious Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire for 25 boys and girls, providing leadership development, academic enrichment and basketball training.
NATIONAL CHAMPS: New Heights’ 14-under girls win the AAU National Championships in Virginia.
NEW ADVENTURES: New Heights takes a girls’ team on an educational and cultural trip to Puerto Rico.

2007 STRIKE IT RICH: Rich Souto replaces founder Nick Blatchford as Executive Director. Nick transitions to the Board of Directors.
ALL-AMERICANS: Ted Smith is promoted to Executive Director, as 150 student-athletes have gone on to college and 230 students placed in college prep high schools. JayVaughn Pinkston from Bishop Loughlin is named 2nd McDonald’s All-American in program history.
OPENING DOORS: Hosts 5th annual HS Open House at the JCC in Manhattan & Summer Academy begins at the Riverdale Country School as a 5-week comprehensive academic and basketball program.

SENIOR MOMENT: Program hosts its first Senior Night, honoring all 31 graduating high school seniors (our largest class to date) who are heading off to college. This becomes an annual affair. UA WAY: The basketball program partners with Under Armour to sponsor and support our boys high school teams. The 17-under team wins its first tournament under the UA umbrella, the Pittsburgh Jam Fest.

KEEPING PASE: Longtime staff member Rock Rosa honored by PASE as a PASEetter honoree for his dedication and commitment to NYC’s youth.
SHOOT & SCORE: The program hosts its first Shoot-a-thon as our boys’ and girls’ teams raise over $50,000 to help support College Bound. The following year, $75,000 is raised.

FAMILY MATTERS: Inaugural Community Service and Family Day is held at Morningside Park, where students help clean the park. This transitions into New Heights Cares, a program where all teams participate in community service activities.
RECORD NIGHT: MADNESS event sets a record by raising over $700,000. Later that year, Li’Esha Garcia becomes the first alum hired as a full-time employee, joining New Heights as its Finance and Operations Manager.

ON THE MOVE: Creates and implements the College Bound Gameplan – a roadmap for our student-athletes’ college prep. New Heights relocates to Harlem to become more centrally located as the organization serves more youth from across NYC.
EMERGING LEADERS: The Emerging Leaders Council (ELC) is formed, composed of young professionals, including several alums of the program.
FIRST LADY: Kiah Gillespe becomes the first female McDonald’s All-American in program history. She is currently a freshman at the University of Maryland. A PERFECT 10TH: Friends, family, alums and supporters gather at Capitale in Manhattan to celebrate New Heights’ 10th Anniversary – over $1 million is raised to help sustain the program’s next 10 years.
