2017: Message from the Leadership Team
Basketball is just the Beginning
As a friend and supporter of New Heights, you’ve likely heard us tout the benefits of sports-based youth programs. But at a time when the gap between underserved and more affluent communities in New York City is stark, and resources for disadvantaged families dwindle, these programs are more important than ever. For youth at risk of falling behind, especially during the important adolescent years, sports can be a highly effective way to engage them in positive relationships and even improve their school performance. Research and evaluations by Up2Us (of which New Heights is a founding member) show that student-athletes are less likely to drop out of high school and more likely to graduate. But sports alone are not the solution. Ignoring a young person’s academic potential and behavioral development can deprive him or her of the full range of opportunities that exist. (And the world beyond high school can be a daunting place for someone without a well-rounded set of life skills.)

Court // Classroom // Community
That’s why New Heights offers a holistic combination of year-round basketball programming, academic services, and social supports to help inner-city youth unlock their full potential and thrive on and off the court. Our coaches and educators help youth navigate the high school application process, boost performance through individualized tutoring, prepare for the SATs and other tests, access scholarships, explore colleges and universities, network with professionals to promote career readiness, and learn how to handle conflicts and setbacks along the way. Our approach has been proven to work. Since New Heights’ inception in 2005, our student-athletes have achieved a 100% high school graduation rate, a 98% college matriculation rate, and 75% college completion rate.
ACHIEVING OUR MISSION
YOU are very much a part of this success and we hope you enjoy reading our highlights over the past year in the pages that follow. Seeing each student-athlete develop into a determined, goaloriented young adult is by far one of the most rewarding aspects of what we do, and through this report we invite you to join in our pride and accomplishments.

PROGRAMS New Heights implements several innovative programs to support its student-athletes for success in middle school, high school, college and life. The College Bound program is comprised of the following two overarching elements: BASKETBALL is the hook that engages our student-athletes, and the court is a classroom that promotes teamwork, leadership and life skills. New Heights fields 19 teams that compete locally and regionally, and in some cases, nationally. ACADEMIC SUPPORT ensures that our youth reach the benchmarks required to advance in school, graduate, and matriculate to college. The combination of basketball and academic support permeates each of College Bound’s subcategories of service: HIGH SCHOOL ASSIST helps our fourth through eighth graders succeed in elementary/middle school and leverages that success to gain admission to college preparatory high schools. Services include: test prep, high school visits, financial aid workshops, and individualized counseling. COLLEGE ASSIST provides our high school student-athletes with the individual support necessary to gain admission to top colleges and universities. Services include SAT/ACT prep, college visits, financial aid workshops, life skills development and NCAA recruiting and eligibility guidance. CAREER ASSIST is our college completion initiative for New Heights alumni, and provides student-athletes with support and guidance to navigate and graduate college. Services include: mentorship, course/major selection, resume building, financial literacy, interview skills, internship assistance and career exposure. SUMMER ACADEMY develops our students’ academic, athletic and leadership skills through a full-day, six-week program for rising fifth-ninth graders. Academic programming is focused on improving hard skills, while promoting the New Heights values of Teamwork, Respect, Effort and Excellence (TREE).

TEAMWORK While every New Heights team works hard on the court and in the classroom, our 6th grade boys team had an amazing 2017, winning the prestigious AAU National Championship, earning them the title of best in the country.
6TH GRADE BOYS 2017 AAU NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Coached by former NBA player, Cincinnati Bearcat and legendary Rice High School star Kenny Satterfield, the New Heights 6th grade team had a season to remember in 2016-17. Having played together since they were in 4th grade, this group has bonded through hours of grueling practices, thousands of sprints, long van rides on the road and hundreds of games. That camaraderie and love for each other was on full display July 18-22 in Hampton, VA at the 12-Under AAU National Championships. After going 3-0 in their pool, the team won four straight elimination games, including the title game against defending national champion Team Takeover, 6339. The championship was a total team effort and was the culmination of three years of hard work and dedication on the basketball court and in the classroom. New Heights is proud to honor this amazing group of young men and their coaches. 6th Grade AAU National Champions Starting Bottom Left: Izaiah “Izzy” Millan, Guard; Donnell Campbell, Forward; Jaiden Williams, Forward. PROFILES OF SUCCESS The New Heights community is comprised of amazing individuals from diverse backgrounds and varying experiences. We would like you to meet just a few of them:
IDAN TRETOUT I joined New Heights my seventh grade year of middle school. I first attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School until the tenth grade. I then transferred to Wilbraham and Monson Academy in Springfield, Mass. New Heights keeps young kids focused on a goal. Personal responsibility is big. New Heights teaches them to wake up early, be on time, or there will be consequences. It gives children that might not have the same opportunities as others a way to get theirs. Coach Rahme Anderson has always been a mentor to me in the New Heights organization. He always held me accountable, and taught me to become physically and mentally tough. He showed me that there is more to basketball than just basketball. New Heights is overall a great place to be. They helped make me who I am today.

TIA SCOTT I joined New Heights in 2006 as an 8th grader. I was under the impression that I was there to play basketball but my first month was spent in the classroom with High School Assist. I started 9th grade at Cardinal Spellman but was unable to continue due to financial difficulties. I transferred to the Dwight School to finish out my senior year but decided to do a post graduate year at Suffield Academy in Connecticut. With the help of New Heights, I discovered my need for a smaller learning environment. I went on to receive my Bachelor’s in Human Development with a minor in Education and Women Studies at Merrimack College in 2016. I am currently in my final year of graduate school at the University of La Verne studying Educational Counseling. I feel that this program will allow me to assist student-athletes at the collegiate level.
“New Heights is about more than just basketball, more than just scholarships or competing in the NCAA. It’s about preparing individuals for a life beyond basketball and that is what I appreciate about this program. I continue to appreciate New Heights because it helped me on my path to where I am today. Watching the program grow from where it was to where it is now has been amazing.”

DENISE HARDING This November marked Denise’s one-year anniversary as New Heights’ Education Director. She brings a wealth of experience to the organization, as well as a passion for supporting and improving educational opportunities for all students. Denise began her professional career in advertising and developed an interest in education, in part, through her experiences as a volunteer mentor to at-risk youth. A desire to serve prompted her to leave the advertising world to become a teacher in a “high needs” Brooklyn district. She then started her own tutoring company dedicated to providing high quality, affordable, individualized tutoring services and test preparation to K-12 students. Through this work she acquired extensive knowledge about NYC schools, prompting her to make educational consulting part her services. Denise is excited to help educate New Heights’ families about their educational options and to provide students with the support needed to set and meet high academic goals. She earned an undergraduate degree in Business at Brooklyn College, a master’s degree in Education from Pace University and a certification in College Counseling from UCLA.
“Our goal is to ensure that after being a part of New Heights, student-athletes will understand and appreciate the value of the educational and career opportunities their efforts on the court can provide, and most importantly, be able to capitalize on those opportunities to the fullest.”

THE SPOTLIGHT New Heights focuses on much more than just basketball. Some off-court highlights from this year: COLLEGE AWARENESS: Our current 9th and 10th grade student-athletes had a “college day” this October. First, they had a college workshop where they began designing their goals around what they are looking for in a college experience. After, the group traveled to Hofstra University to tour the campus, meet with an admissions officer, watch the women’s team practice, meet with an assistant coach from the men’s team and hear from New Heights alum Joel Angus, a grad student at Hofstra, about what to expect from college life. HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE: Our 13th annual High School Open House took place in October as over 20 schools – local public, private, charter and Catholic plus boarding schools – welcomed our middle school participants, offering guidance on the HS admissions process as well as different school options. Several partner organizations also brought students to take advantage of the unprecedented access. ANNUAL MIDDLE SCHOOL TRIP: Our annual middle school trip stayed close to home this past year. Our first stop was the Studio Museum in Harlem where the students examined and learned about different works by prominent African-American artists. After that, the group made a visit to the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, where they received a campus tour, spoke to the admissions officers, watched practice and had lunch. The last stop was a game at St. John’s University where New Heights alum Bashir Ahmed was in action. HEIGHTS AT THE HILL SCHOOL: For the first time, New Heights brought 52 student-athletes to the Hill School in Pottstown, PA, for a week away at Summer Academy. The campers spent the week honing their skills in the classroom and on the basketball court. In addition to staying in the dorms and living the life of boarding school students, our youth tried a few new things – namely yoga, water polo and an evening of bowling and laser tag. SHOOT-A-THON: For the fourth consecutive year, we hosted our Shoot-a-Thon fundraiser and combined the event with a Positive Coaching Alliance parents’ workshop. Our 19 boys and girls team shattered the previous mark by raising over $125,000 while bonding over lunch and free throws. Over 50 parents attended the PCA workshop and discussed what being a “Double Goal” parent looks like.

FINANCIALS New Heights continues to be supported by a generous and diverse set of donors. Our Board of Directors provides tremendous leadership and expertise and is a driving force behind all our fundraising efforts. In FY17, we maintained over 90% of our foundation and corporate supporters, and hosted successful MADNESS’17 and Shoot-a-thon events. In FY17, we transitioned our fundraising model, and began FY18 with a triumphant inaugural GameChangers Ball which raised over $750,000 to support our College Bound programming. Our team also operated efficiently and effectively this past year, ensuring that 79% of our expenses went directly to the running of our programs. Thanks to everyone’s support, we begin FY18 in a very strong position financially.
