Message from the Leadership Team

2016: Looking Inward In 2016, New Heights embarked on our second decade of service as a non-profit. After hosting a successful 10 Year Anniversary Celebration in October 2015, raising over $1.1M at the event to support our work and the deserving youth in our program, we focused on strengthening our foundation in 2016. We planned for the future by first looking inward at our programs and staffing. With the support of one of our key funders, the Arbor Brothers, we worked collectively to redefine our core values and competencies. We created a new performance management system to provide greater structure, accountability and goal-setting for our team. We also reviewed our organizational goals and created a plan to lead us forward as we strengthen and enhance our model. As you will also see in this report, we have created a new basketball logo that our teams are proudly wearing on their uniforms. This past year, our programs and student-athletes produced great outcomes. New Heights proudly graduated all 29 of our seniors (100%), achieving this milestone every year since 2005. We strengthened our already high-performing staff, enhanced our Summer Academy model, and expanded our Career Assist program, so that we are focusing on our mission to support youth into “high school, college and life. We are continuing to identify new ways to educate and empower inner-city youth to be leaders, champions, and student-athletes. In the following pages, you will see the results of the hard work put forth by our student-athletes and their families this past year. You will also read about the tireless efforts exhibited by our amazing team of board members, staff, coaches, tutors and volunteers. Thank you to the whole New Heights family for making 2016 a transformational year for the organization. You continue to positively impact the lives of hundreds of promising NYC youth! We would love your continued involvement in 2017, and we hope you can come out to a gym or classroom soon to see our student-athletes and work in action.

OUR MISSION To educate and empower promising inner-city youth to be leaders, champions and student-athletes by developing the skills necessary for success in high school, college and life.

OUR VISION

All young athletes will have the values and skills necessary to become leaders in their communities and succeed in life beyond sports.

WHAT WE DO

Provide an integrated sports-based youth development model for inner-city NYC youth with a passion for basketball. We harness the love of the game by fielding local and travel teams and supplying them with academic enrichment and college preparatory programs along with community-service initiatives.

WHO WE SERVE

NYC youth ages 10-20 from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who have a passion for basketball.

OUR IMPACT

For over 10 years, we’ve maintained a 100% high school graduation rate for our student-athletes and a 98% college matriculation rate. Currently we have 85 alums playing college basketball.

New Heights Programs BASKETBALL & LEADERSHIP

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

SUMMER ACADEMY

Basketball is the hook that engages our student-athletes, but it’s the relationships gained that keeps them on track. New Heights fields 18 teams that compete locally and regionally, and in some cases, nationally. In addition, the basketball court is a “classroom” where leadership and life skills are developed.

Academic Support provides critical guidance and oversight through our after school tutoring and test preparation services. Each participant receives an individualized “game plan” of support to help them stay on track for promotion, ultimately leading to high school and college matriculation.

Summer Academy develops our students’ academic, athletic and leadership skills through a fullday, six-week program for rising fifth-ninth graders. Hosted at the Loyola School in Manhattan, academic programming is focused on improving Math, Language Arts, and leadership skills, while promoting the New Heights values of Teamwork, Respect, Excellence, and Effort (TREE).

HIGH SCHOOL ASSIST

COLLEGE ASSIST

CAREER ASSIST

College Assist provides our high school student-athletes with the individual support necessary to gain admission to top colleges and universities. Services include SAT/ACT prep, school visits, financial aid workshops, life skills development and NCAA recruiting and eligibility guidance.

Career Assist is our college completion initiative for New Heights alumni. Launched in the Fall of 2015, Career Assist provides our college student-athletes with support and guidance to navigate and graduate college prepared to enter professional careers. Services include: mentorship, course/major selection, resume building, financial literacy, interview skills, internship assistance and career exposure. 5

High School Assist helps our fourth through eighth graders succeed in elementary/middle school and leverage that success to gain admission to college preparatory high schools. Services include: test preparation, high school visits, financial aid workshops, and individualized counseling to support students and families.

NEW HEIGHTS

PROFILES OF SUCCESS ISAIAH COUSINS Isaiah Cousins joined New Heights as a 9th grader when a friend and high school teammate, Jarrel Marshall, brought him to a workout. Neither Isaiah, nor his New Heights coach Rahme Anderson, could have predicted how Isaiah’s basketball career would turn out. After years of diligent work in the classroom and on the court, Isaiah received a scholarship offer to the University of Oklahoma, where he started for four years. In his senior season, he teamed with fellow future NBA firstround draft pick Buddy Hield to form the best backcourt in the country. Oklahoma was ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of Isaiah’s senior season and he was rewarded by being drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the NBA Draft. He is currently playing for Sacramento’s D-League affiliate. “New Heights is the place where stars are born!!”

THE SCOUTING REPORT Years with New Heights: 8 High School: Mount Vernon College: Oklahoma Pros: Sacramento Kings

SADE JACKSON Sade is a young woman who has used the game of basketball to create a great life for herself – she has earned a solid education and created a successful career in sports. Sade joined New Heights in middle school and with the support of High School Assist she enrolled at Aquinas High School in the Bronx. Following a successful career on the court and in the classroom, Sade earned an athletic scholarship to attend Adelphi University. As a student-athlete there, she set several all-time records for the women’s basketball program, including becoming the school’s all-time leader in assists. More importantly, she graduated in 2014 and received her degree in Sports Management. After college, she played professional basketball for one season with Eintracht Braunschwieg in Germany. She then returned to her alma mater where she served as an assistant coach. In 2016, she was named Head Coach for the Pratt University women’s team in Brooklyn. She also serves as an Assistant Athletic Director at the school. “From a young age, New Heights has always given me the essentials needed to succeed. Not only has New Heights presented me with opportunities of a lifetime but I’ve also met and built relationships with some incredible people. Relationships that I expect to last a lifetime because New Heights has and will always be my extended family.”

LYNETTE TAITT Lynette has been part of New Heights for five years. She is currently a senior at Bishop Loughlin and has committed to play basketball at Manhattan College on a full athletic scholarship. What New Heights means to her, in her own words: “New Heights to me means a fresh start, a family. I say a fresh start because New Heights is a program like no other. It provides academic help and a strong support system. Things that you aren’t grasping, basketball wise or even academically – they find a way to make you understand. I say family because there is always someone there to help you when you need it. Or even someone to talk to. What program lets you play basketball, tutors you and helps you get into college? This represents a fresh start because you have a chance to pick up habits you might need down the road. For example, study habits or making sure you look up while dribbling. Lastly, New Heights helps build your character and the person you are outside of basketball.”

KEITH WILLIAMS Born and bred in Brooklyn, Keith Williams joined while a 7th grader at the Satellite 3 School. He first heard about the program from Branden Frazier, a New Heights alum who also attended the same middle school. Throughout his tenure at New Heights, Keith has always been coached by Rahme Anderson and they have built a close bond over that time. Keith went on to star at Bishop Loughlin, where he is currently a senior. A four-year varsity player, Keith was a first-team All-League performer during his junior campaign. After a long process and several visits, Keith has decided to attend the University of Cincinnati on a full athletic scholarship. He is currently on track to qualify academically and is receiving SAT Prep through New Heights and his high school. New Heights is extremely proud of the person and player that Keith has become and all of the hard work he has put in on and off the court. “New Heights means a lot to me. The organization changed my life. Without them, I don’t think I would be where I am right now.”

NEW HEIGHTS

SPOTLIGHT COLLEGE VISITS

Our 4th and 5th grade boys teams took a special trip in August, first stopping at the University of Cincinnati where 5th grade coach Kenny Satterfield starred. The boys received VIP treatment and had a blast practicing on the floor and hanging out in the locker room. Then they were off to University of Louisville, where they practiced on the main floor, spoke to the coaches, got a tour of the facilities and locker room before heading to play a tournament.

ANGELS GAME/UNDER ARMOUR

While on the road in Anaheim, Calif. for an Under Armour Event, our 17U and 16U boys’ teams took in an Angels game against the Houston Astros. It was the first professional baseball game for many of our student-athletes.

HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE

Our 12th Annual High School Open House took place on October 22 at the JCC in Manhattan. Over 20 schools were in attendance and our middle school program got to learn about different high school options both in and out of New York City. That was followed by a workout with our 7th and 8th graders.

ANNUAL MIDDLE SCHOOL TRIP

Our annual middle school trip took over 50 student-athletes to New Jersey on Martin Luther king Jr. Day. Our first stop was the Newark Museum, who had a special exhibit and our students watched both the iconic “I Have a Dream” speech as well as a film on the Selma Riots produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Then it was onto Monmouth University for a campus tour and a men’s basketball game featuring New Heights alum Josh James, who spoke to the kids after the game.

NEW HEIGHTS HELPS IN THE COMMUNITY

We continued our partnership with the Common Pantry of New York as every team member from 7th grade through 12th grade volunteered at the Pantry in either their Choice Pantry or Hot Meal programs. In addition, our younger teams ran a successful shoe drive, donating over 120 pairs of new and lightly used shoes to Soul 4 Souls, a global social enterprise providing shoes and clothes to families in need around the world.

SHOOT-A-THON

Our third-annual Shoot-a-Thon was by far the most successful to date as 18 teams managed to raise well over $100,000 and had a blast in the process. In addition, we ran our parents Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) workshop on site and had over 50 parents learn about being “Double Goal” spectators at games.
