ANNUAL REPORT 2021

EMERGING LEADERS COUNCIL

2021 We’re home.

This fall, New Heights opened the doors to our new headquarters at the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center. After years of preparation and planning, we couldn’t be more thrilled to finally put down permanent roots. The entire New Heights family looks forward to becoming an integral member of the Brooklyn community and strengthening our reach across the city. Since our inception in 2005, New Heights has worked tirelessly to help underserved young people discover and nurture their talents to become lifelong leaders on the basketball court, in the classroom and beyond. Our fully realized vision always included finding a home that would enable us to scale our programming, increase our impact and be a welcoming environment for our student-athletes and families. Thanks in large part to the support we have received from many of you, this vision is now a reality. With three full-sized basketball courts, classrooms, technology lounge and administrative offices, our new home brings together all staff, coaches, tutors and volunteers to streamline the student-athlete experience and pave the way for transformative growth. Through expanded services and new community-based programs, including summer day camps, basketball clinics, leagues, and schoolbased partnerships and events, New Heights will ultimately reach thousands of additional youth and their families each year. As you read the pages that follow, we hope that you share in our sense of excitement and pride. We also hope that you will visit us in person to see firsthand how our programming and new home give underserved youth everything they need to rise to excellence on and off the court. Special thanks to Board members Andy Nathan, Duane Fiedler and Nick Silvers for their leadership roles on our Brooklyn Bound Committee, and to Linda Choong who oversaw the Design Committee of the new space. We are also grateful to the New Heights Community Artist Collective for their beautiful murals, some of which you will see in the photography throughout this annual report. Finally, and most importantly, thank you to our supporters for being a part of this incredible journey. On behalf of the Board of Directors, our staff and especially our student-athletes and their families, we express our deepest gratitude for your generosity. We would not be here without you. With warmest wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2022. In appreciation,

Program Design Since our founding, New Heights has been guided by four overarching values: Teamwork, Respect, Effort and Excellence. While these values remain at the forefront of all we do, our organization and our programs continue to evolve as we transition to Brooklyn and expand our services. In preparation for the substantial growth that we are undertaking, and to better understand the successes and challenges of our programming, New Heights commissioned a multi-phase evaluation with external research, evaluation and strategy firm 8RES during the past several years to review and revise all of our program models, goals and metrics. The evaluation explored program processes and outcomes, and the results have informed the continued development of our College Bound program and the development of new community-based services, including: PHYSICAL + MENTAL HEALTH + WELLNESS Programs include community skills development, basketball events, community basketball leagues, nutrition workshops and court partnerships with community organizations. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING Programs include an all-day summer camp and workshops across a range of SEL competencies based on community need, and implementation of our TREE values.

COURT

New Heights was one of the first and only organizations in New York City to use basketball to promote academic performance. Instead of emphasizing “the win,” we use positive coaching to motivate the young people in our program to develop a variety of leadership and life skills that will ultimately prepare them for the world beyond sports. New Heights currently fields 23 teams that compete locally and regionally, and in some cases, nationally. Some of our most exciting moments that took place on the court this past year include: NEW HEIGHTS JOINS NIKE EYBL New Heights joined the Nike family this year and our partnership includes competing in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League circuit, the top youth grassroots basketball league in the country. Our 17U, 16U and 15U boys teams competed at the prestigious Peach Jam event in July and all finished with winning records against the top programs in the country.

CLINICS WITH THE PROS Within the first month of opening our home, we have already hosted several free community events serving hundreds of youth and coaches. Our first event was a coach’s clinic hosted by USA Basketball and the NY Knicks, followed by the Brooklyn Nets Basketball Academy, featuring James Harden for over 130 boys and girls. We look forward to providing more unique opportunities for years to come.

New Heights teams (13 boys teams, 10 girls teams)

THE FOUNDATION As part of our community initiatives, we launched The Foundation, a series of free weekend community basketball clinics this fall for over 100 elementary and middle school youth. Led by Community Director Khalid Green, the program provides high-quality basketball instruction and programming. We are excited to expand this and other programming for the community on the court and in the classroom in 2022.

3

CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY Earlier this year, we were proud to partner with the Board of Elections to host Early Election Voting in our new home facility. It was inspiring to see the basketball court transformed into a voting site where our community’s voice could be heard. We look forward to future opportunities to share our home as a resource for the local neighborhood.

CLASSROOM Through comprehensive academic support, New Heights ensures that our youth reach the benchmarks required to advance in school, graduate, and matriculate to and through college. In addition to building skills on the court, our coaches and educators help our student-athletes navigate the high school application process, boost performance through individualized tutoring, prepare for the SATs and similar tests, explore colleges and universities, search for and access scholarships, and network with professionals to promote career readiness. SUMMER ACADEMY We hosted our annual Summer Academy in person in August at Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn. For two weeks, our middle school youth took part in innovative academic programs and intensive basketball training. We focused on partnerships this summer, working with TEAM (Tech Exposure and Access Through Mentoring) to provide a basketball analytics course; DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice to learn about VR (virtual reality) through discussions on social justice; and Allergic to Salad to teach nutrition and healthy eating habits. We also hosted daily group discussions on our TREE values and provided targeted high school transition programming for rising ninth graders. TUTORING + SAT PREP New Heights provided over 450 hours of individual tutoring sessions for our student-athletes. We also hosted a 14-hour SAT prep course in the spring, and ongoing workshops on a range of topics for both youth and their families to ensure successful grade promotion at school, on-time graduation and matriculation to college. CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS New Heights teamed up with longtime supporter Centerbridge Partners to host a virtual discussion on college and career options, and with Morgan Stanley to provide summer internships for program alumni. We also partnered with AZ Educate, a summer program led by Ackman-Ziff to offer career and networking exposure. FEMALE EMPOWERMENT New Heights partnered with several current and former WNBA players for panel discussions, meet and greets and a media day to provide our female student-athletes with career exploration, college exposure and an opportunity to meet with professionals across a wide range of sports-related industries.

COMMUNITY

We believe that the shared language of sports—and in our case basketball—brings us together to support one another on and off the court. During the past year, New Heights has organized several events to build community and share resources. DEMYSTIFYING THE VACCINE In the spring, New Heights hosted a free virtual COVID vaccination community discussion in partnership with Maimonides Medical Center and the Brooklyn Nets to help educate our community and make informed decisions about the vaccine. SOCIAL JUSTICE WITH THE NBA FOUNDATION We were proud to partner with the newly-founded NBA Foundation as one of the first 20 grantees nationally to help “create employment opportunities, further career advancement and drive greater economic empowerment in Black communities.” SPORTS-BASED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PLAYBOOK New Heights worked with research, evaluation and strategy firm 8RES on an evaluation of best practices from organizations across the country, the results of which we have used to create a SBYD Playbook to inform current and future program planning and data tracking, along with outreach and engagement in our new Brooklyn community. We are looking forward to sharing this with our community throughout the coming year. MADNESS’21 This year’s virtual MADNESS was a star-studded event with a great panel discussion on college basketball during the NCAA Tournament. Host Ros GoldOnwude was joined by NBA Analyst and former NCAA Champion Jay Williams, and Brooklyn Nets star Blake Griffin. The trio discussed their college basketball experiences, made tournament predictions and fielded questions from our student-athletes. 7TH ANNUAL TEAM CHALLENGE Each spring, the entire New Heights family rallies as one, from staff to parents, coaches to players, for the annual basketball Team Challenge. This year the Team Challenge was once again a Zoom-based virtual “Push-up-a-thon”. With social distancing still in place, the New Heights family of coaches, players, general managers, staff, leadership and supporters came together on June 12th to push up and push forward. We were also joined by New Heights alum and current NBA player, Moses Brown! 5TH ANNUAL GAMECHANGERS BALL This year, the Ball was in our court! Our annual GameChangers Ball took on a special significance this past October as it served as the grand opening of our new home to our family of supporters. We welcomed everyone for a first look of our new space, enjoying cocktails in our home and a full program in the newly renovated Betty Carter Auditorium for the Arts. We honored several key champions who helped make it possible – Bruce Mosler (Cushwake & Wakefield), Amber Sabathia (PitCCh In Foundation), Don Capoccia (BFC Partners) and Lance Thomas (NBA Veteran & Alumni Honoree). 2021 ANNUAL REPORT

FINANCIALS

In the midst of transformational growth this past year, New Heights has been fortunate to count upon the generosity of our supporters and the leadership of our Board of Directors (who once again demonstrated 100% giving) to keep our organization financially strong. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, New Heights raised over $3.5 million, making FY21 our most successful fundraising year to date. Our 5th annual GameChangers Ball in October 2021 continued the momentum and raised over $1.6 million—a record amount—which puts the organization in a strong financial position for the coming year as we scale our programs, expand our staff and begin running a world-class facility. We thank everyone for their incredible support, which provides the foundation for our organizational success.
