Pastor Wayne Cordeiro
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family. Pastor Wayne: My wife Anna and I have been married for over 30 years. We have three children and two grandchildren plus one on the way. Amy, our oldest daughter, lives in Oregon and has two children. Aaron, our son, is married and they are expecting in March. They live in Honolulu and he pastors New Hope Hawaii Kai, a satellite church. Abby, our youngest, lives in Oregon. Q: Tell the people a little about New Hope Christian Fellowship, the church you founded in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pastor Wayne: New Hope began on September 10, 1995, and is one of the fastest growing churches in the nation. Over the last 13 years, 31,000 have received Christ for the first time, and the church has grown to over 11,000 weekend attendees. Eighty-three churches have been pioneered under New Hope’s church-planting ministry outreach, and in 1998 we founded our Pacific Rim Bible College. Q: Outreach magazine has listed New Hope O’ahu as one of the top 25 most influential churches in America and one of the top 10 most innovative. We know that you advocate the use of Life Journaling in studying God’s Word. Would you say this has been a major factor in these accomplishments? Please elaborate about why it is such an important tool. Pastor Wayne: The Bible is the predominant way God speaks to us. Since so many things fly by us at lightning speed, it’s crucial we make an appointment each day to hear God. God’s Word is a doorway into His heart, and journaling on what God is saying will help us remember it. As you journal, you garner wisdom and divine insight from God. Q: You often talk about “Leading Heart First.” Can you explain what that means? Pastor Wayne: We serve an excellent God, and because we are created in His image, we can be an excellent people. One of our Core Values at New Hope is that God is worthy of our very best. Excellence can only be achieved in our actions when it first appears in the heart of our actions. When we lead with our heart, we put forth our very best for Jesus in our actions, whether it’s serving the homeless or teaching in Sunday School. Q: We have heard you say that everything your church does should be “tied to a soul.” Can you explain this concept? Pastor Wayne: It’s not the size of the task but the size of the heart that is put into the task that makes what you do beautiful for God. So, no matter what we do, whether it’s teaching, singing, passing out bulletins, playing an instrument, setting up chairs, or cleaning tables, I tell my congregation that everything they do is connected to a soul and is meant to bring the lost to Christ.
Q: Developing leaders has been a constant in your ministry. Why is leadership development so important? Pastor Wayne: One of the greatest roles of a pastor is to believe in the people under his care. This one quality alone can do more to develop emerging leaders in a church than any class or group study. We all need someone to believe in us, to see the best in us, and to help us bring it forth. To increase the base of leadership is the ultimate test of a successful leader: to unselfishly live to make others successful by developing their leadership potential. Q: We understand that it takes a huge number of volunteers to do church every weekend. How do you inspire them to volunteer and continue to serve? Pastor Wayne: The day of the Lone Ranger is over. If we are going to be effective in this new century, everyone in the church must realize his or her importance to God’s plan. The more we learn to work together, the stronger the church becomes. Everyone is a 10 somewhere, and God has deposited within each of us more gifts through which we can make an eternal contribution. When everyone understands that they are part of God’s plan and we need each other to fulfill God’s plan, they jump in and serve. Q: We know that New Hope has a unique ministry style, incorporating dance, drama, and multimedia. Tell us more about the benefits of this approach. Pastor Wayne: While remaining true to the Scriptures, we work through creative ways to present the claims of Christ. If multimedia helps, whether it’s a dance, a mime, a song, or a sketch that will better present the gospel so that people can better understand it, we redeem that method. We will not use multimedia or performing arts just because we want to be part of the latest trend or because other churches are doing so. We will use the arts to help people better understand the Word. We anchor ourselves to His ageless truths and gear the style we present those truths to the times we are living in.

Making The Most Of Our Time by: Wayne Cordeiro
I can’t believe that it’s already a brand new year. Last year just zipped by. I’m going to get another year older this year. I especially felt old when the AARP started sending me senior citizen discounts. I threw them away and said, “I’m not ready to get old,” until I read an article about how valuable older people are. “Old folks are worth a fortune. They have silver in their hair, gold in their teeth, stones in their kidneys and gas in their bowels.” Ahead of us, there are over 300 days filled with potential. How we use our time will make a huge difference as to whether or not we will be successful. Time invested well can convert bland families into great families, average musicians into world-renowned musicians. Time used well can turn mediocre leaders into world-class leaders. Time is like the wind. You can let it just tousle your hair, or you can harness it and turn it into something beneficial. The first step in turning your time into something beneficial is to know God’s will for this year. In other words, how does God expect us to improve as a mom, as a dad, or as a student? He can’t help unless one thing happens on our side. We need to know God’s will, or we will live foolishly. “The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps” (Proverb 16:9 NASB). Second, if God needs to veto something, He’ll veto it. But He can’t help unless you take the time to plan. Someone once said, “If you’re failing to plan, you’re planning to fail.” Using our planners to record appointments is called defensive planning. Offensive planning means asking, “Lord, what are you saying to me for this year?” When you do this, you’re taking what God is asking you to do and planning to get it done. God is worthy of that.
“
Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil Ephesians 5:15-16
“
(NASB).
I can’t do it in my own strength, but I can ask God every single day to do three things for me: “Lord, come live your life through me.” vs “I’m going to live for God.” “Lord, come do your work through me.” vs “I’m going to work for God.” “Lord, come and love your people through me.” vs “I’m going to just love people, even if it kills me.”
When the Holy Spirit fills you, God is able to do His work through you and He adds wisdom and insight. It’s one of the best prayers we can pray every morning to ask Him to fill me afresh for this day. It’s so important to make the most of your time because it will go whoosh! I’m going to convert as much time into life as I can, so that by the same time next year I’ll be able to look back at a year filled with life.
“I have come, that you might have life and you will have it more abundantly” John 10:10 L@IB JANUARY 2009

Looking at life & choosing eternal value
W
hat’s more dangerous than prison, more perilous than crime, more risky than drug addiction? I didn’t make a dramatic turn from a life of crime, drugs or violence, but my journey was, in a way, more risky, because I was a lukewarm Christian - lukewarm and content in my commitment and my actions. Being content is dangerous because it’s hard to hear God when the call of the world is so loud. I was raised in a Christian home. In fact, my dad was the pastor of Palisades Baptist Church. Now pastor’s kids usually go one of two ways – they’re either really good, or they’re not! And I was generally, pretty good. I went to Hawaii Baptist Academy (and I didn’t get into trouble), then on to Stanford University (and, again, didn’t get into trouble), and after coming home to Hawaii after graduating, I went to work for KHON-TV. I moved up the ladder at Channel 2 quickly and after a couple of years I was directing some of the station's most interesting and challenging projects. A few years later, I left the station to direct TV commercials because it paid much better and I quickly made a name for myself. At the time, I thought that a combination of luck and hard work had brought
me far in just a short time. I hadn’t even considered that God had created those opportunities for me for a much more important purpose down the road. My company was doing quite well and I was working on the biggest clients in the state, traveling a lot and making good money. It wasn’t that God wasn’t important to me or my wife Mardi; it’s just that we felt that our gifts and talents weren’t really useful to the church. In 1996, my best friend, Creighton Arita, asked us to come and help with a video for his church, New Hope. I thought to myself, “Wow, well, I can do that! What an honor and a privilege it’ll be for THEM to have ME come work on their video!” We set to work, meeting and interviewing many of the wonderful and inspirational people responsible for starting New Hope Oahu. We got to see, first-hand, the love and commitment they had for Jesus Christ and their hopes of reaching our friends, family, co-workers and neighbors with the life-changing and soul-saving message of His love. Mardi and I began to volunteer and get involved and through our involvement God began working on us. I learned that my half-hearted commitment wasn’t going to bring me or my family true satisfaction or real contentment. And I realized later, that through serving, I was really the one who benefitted from a changed heart, mind and soul. In 2000, I faced a very tough decision, Pastor Wayne asked me to join the staff
here at New Hope and I wondered if I would really be able to walk away from all that I had worked for, all that I accomplished, and all the money I was making, to go to work for a church? Well, as we thought about our decision, it finally became clear - I had my “God Moment” - everything I had experienced in my life, all of the open doors, the successes, the defeats and the great opportunities, had been given to me by God for a greater purpose, an eternal purpose. Eight years ago I made a choice to give up my own life and follow Christ in a much closer and bolder way and I’ve never regretted it; I know I am where I’m supposed to be. You may not be facing the challenge of a terrible addiction; you may not be leading a life that others would consider sinful, but you may be facing something even more dangerous by being content to live a good and moral life, but not giving yourself fully to follow Jesus. When you are in trouble, or facing a crisis, it just might be easier to hear God because there aren’t a whole lot of other options, but if you are generally a good person, leading a good life, you might be in a place where it is really hard to hear God’s voice because the noise of the world is so loud. Don’t be satisfied with a half-hearted commitment to Him; be sold-out for God, passionate and willing to give up your own goals to follow Him more closely. May I encourage you to look at your life and choose things that have eternal value. L@IB JANU ARY2009

organization by: Wayne Corderio
I grew up in a disciplined home. My dad was in the Army and taught us how to make our bed every morning military-style, how to roll up my socks, and how to fold my underwear neatly in a certain way that they stack in the drawer. When I got married I taught my wife Anna how to fold in this way. Everything has its place and everything is organized. It’s not because it’s something that is natural to me but because of years of habit and it has helped me develop some measure of organization. I look back on it now and I am so thankful to my dad, as strict as he was, in helping me develop organization. As we enter the new year, a lot of us are thinking of optimizing our lives. Here are a few tips to start.
1
Clean your car. I can tell how well
a person is organized by
2
Go through your possessions and anything that you’ve not used in the last two years get rid of it. Otherwise
unknowingly you will start to develop into a pack rat. This is very dangerous because it is very difficult to organize your life when you have stuff everywhere. It’s better to get unused things into the hands of someone who can use them than to keep them in your closet for years. We have Pac Rim Bible students who would love second hand clothes.
looking at the person’s car. If you have a dirty car it usually resembles much of your life. Let’s look at the outside of the car first. If you don’t ever wash your car, start today and wash your car. Try it once every two weeks. The interior of the car should not look like a storage locker. If your trunk has things in it, get a plastic tub to contain everything. I keep my paddling things in a bin with an extra towel and sunscreen.

3
Keep a calendar. Do you have a list of things you need to do, or do you go through life defensively and react to whatever
needs to be done? Get on the offense and a calendar will prompt you to obedience. Otherwise, you are going to react to whatever responsibilities you have, but it will be aimless after a while. When the day is done, you will have done three to four times more than if you had no list at all.
4
What project are you going to work on this season? I have five yearly projects that I work on.
I bought a book called Organizing Your Life. It talks about how to develop file folders, and how to make sure everything is in the right spot. Another tip is to find someone who is a better organizer than you and ask them for help.
5
Before you go home every day from the office, clean your desk off. There should be very few things left on your desk. You’ll see a bright new beginning the next day when you come in.
ving you towards developing organizational skills.

The Church is the hope of the world. At New Hope we believe that teamwork combined with a heart for excellence equals an Encore Church. It's why we exist—to present Christ to people in such a way that draws them into a genuine walk with Him. If you've been around us much you know that we value the friendships that develop as we do church together! The commitment to this strategy compelled us to create the Doing Church As a Team conference 14 years ago. Over the years a ripple effect has been created touching ministries around the world. It has become an integral tool for like-minded churches and ministries who value the team method of ministry. This year Pastor Wayne has invited best selling author, Mark Sanborn to join us as we focus on becoming an Encore Church together! Mark is the author of seven books, including: TeamBuilt, Making Teamwork Work, Sanborn on Success, and Upgrade: Proven Strategies for Dramatically Increasing Personal and Professional Success.

Never Underestimate the Power of an Idea
Albert Schweitzer once said, “The power of an idea is incalculable. We see no power in a drop of water. But let it get into a crack in the rock and be turned into ice, and it splits the rock; turned into steam, it drives the pistons of the most powerful engines. Something happens to it which makes active and effective the power that is latent in it.”
A Starbucks store manager invented the Frappuccino; he served it to customers without CEO Howard Schultz’s knowledge. When Schultz found out about the experiment and tasted it himself, he personally didn’t like it. However enough people did that he tested and refined it before the rollout in 1995. Within 36 months it had generated $100 million in revenue.
What does it take to change your life? The answer: one powerful idea.
Not all ideas are that large or industry-shaking. Sometimes an idea helps you save a little time, get more done, or improve a relationship. These are “little i” ideas. At other times an idea can make you money in the stock market, create a new product, or result in a promotion. Call those “big I” ideas.
Jeff Bezos had an idea that resulted from studying what he might sell on the Internet. The idea became Amazon.com. It made Bezos a millionaire and changed the way books are sold. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak had an idea: creating a personal computer. At the time, computers were anything but personal. They were large enough to take up an entire room and prohibitively expensive. Apple Computer was born, and so was the age of personal computing. Fred Smith had an idea to deliver packages overnight, regardless of destination. That was the genesis of Federal Express, and the invention of a new distribution system.
The distance between you and your dreams is often only an idea-wide. Someone once said that to be creative, you just need to have lots of ideas. If you have enough, they don’t all need to be good ideas. In this case, quantity is the road to quality. Challenge: Commit to capturing one good idea each week (and maybe a few mediocre ideas more often). Keep an “idea list.” Periodically review the list. Identify the “little i” and “big I” ideas. Implement as many as you can.

| pacrim | Pacific Rim Bible College has the vision to be the epicenter of the most progressive and relevant training for the people of Hawaii and beyond. Just as seismic shock waves radiate out from a specific geographic location, we believe that Pacific Rim Bible College will be a divine instrument for the training and equipping of leaders with the “heart of Jesus in the heart of the Pacific”. The seismic waves that God is using through New Hope to reach Hawaii and the world are worship, leadership, and technology. PRBC is positioning itself to provide the best training in these areas with guest instructors Tommy Walker, a Maranatha Music recording artist, and Robert Clinton, as well as our own Pastor Wayne for leadership. And for technology, online/video-on-demand courses, as well as courses in multimedia and Internet/Web TV are being provided. As Paul writes in Ephesians 4, “He is the one who gave these gifts to the church, the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ,” (Eph. 4:11-12 NLT). It is interesting to note when Paul mentions that God gave gifts, the gifts are not spiritual gifts, but the gift of people that are given as apostles, evangelists, pastors and teachers! Therefore, Pac Rim is here for the equipping of present and future leaders in the area of worship, leadership, and technology, along with getting theologically sound biblical education. You are God’s gift to the church. We are happy to partner with you in the process. Guy Higashi Executive Vice President
GOOD EYE / BAD EYE In class today, a student asked about a difficult passage from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount: “… if your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness” (Matthew 6:22-23). What did Jesus mean? It turns out that having a “good eye” or a “bad eye” was a common manner of speaking when Jesus taught. The phrase “bad eye” is often translated as “stingy” or “greedy” in other places in the Bible (Deuteronomy 15:9, Proverbs 23:6, Proverbs 28:22, Matthew 20:15). And the word for “good” in this verse is translated as “generous” in some other passages in the Bible (1 Chronicles 29:17, Romans 12:8, James 1:5). So Jesus was using the ordinary language of his day to point out how much better generosity is than stinginess. If you read this whole section of Jesus’ sermon (Matthew 6:19-34), you can tell that Jesus is giving several
key principles about handling our money. First, he tells us that an act of generosity is like making a deposit in heaven (6:19-21). Then he tells us that having a “good eye” (being generous) lights up our whole lives, while having a “bad eye” (being stingy) makes our whole lives dark (6:22-23). Next, he warns us that we must choose God as our master, not money (6:24). Finally, Jesus teaches us how to avoid worry so that we will use our money generously to advance God’s purposes (6:25-34). We ended our discussion not only with a good Bible lesson, but also with a challenge: am I being generous with the resources God has given me? Do I have a “good eye” or a “bad eye?” Gary Manning Interim Academic Dean Associate Professor of Bible & Biblical Languages
NEW BEGINNINGS The first month of the New Year is upon us and everything around is telling us its time for change. It’s time to hit the gym, re-create our image, create a new budget, etc. January is often a time of new beginnings. This past fall at Pacific Rim Bible College, I took a semester long class on the book of Genesis, ‘The Book of Beginnings’. In the beginning God created: the land’s surface and the water’s depths, the air we breathe and the heavens we gaze upon, creatures of every kind, vegetation to sustain life, the lights to govern day and night, and then God formed mankind and breathed him into being. This is the story of beginnings to top them all, and the most amazing thing is that it is our story! The very God of whom the story is told: “In the Beginning created God”, is the same God, who through the Spirit, lives in and among believers today. Now, when I think of new beginnings I can’t help but be drawn to where it all began. Our God who created everything that exists is a God of beginnings. We learn that our God desires a life of covenant with his people. He began this kind of relationship with Noah. He gave him a sign, which we uniquely experience nearly daily as we see vibrant rainbows over the islands of Hawaii. He gave the Law of Moses to draw His people unto himself, and finally He sent his Son to make the most significant covenant to last for all of eternity. When we accept this covenant relationship, we are written, with a new identity, into the story that began when God began creation. As we move into this New Year and take time to think about all the new beginnings, may we be a people who begin at the source. May we be reminded that our God created everything out of nothing; he brought form and function from that which was formless and void. In the same way we can begin this year by giving to Him the areas of our life in need of his form and function, and request of him to breathe new life into us. May we be constantly changed to reflect more and more the image of our Creator this year! Sabeth Erungel PRBC Student L@IB JANUARY2009

MOROCCAN CHICKEN ÂťWith Apricots & Almonds
I visited Morocco last year and what an experience it was. The people, food and surroundings were very different. They use a lot of spices in different combinations. This recipe will serve about four people and has a great taste and is easy to cook. There is a little prep time but the time is so worth it. You will need a large heavy skillet, small skillet, sauce pan and some kitchen string. I would serve this recipe with some couscous or rice. All of these ingredients are easy to find and should tantalize your taste buds, with a mixture of flavors you may have not tried together before. We can pray for the country of Morocco as we enjoy this dish.
Recipe by: -Leslie Krahn

»ingredients •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1 teaspoon ground ginger •1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper •1 1/4 teaspoon salt •1/2 teaspoon turmeric (spice) •3 tablespoons plus 1/4 cup olive oil •Approx. 3 pounds of chicken cut up into 6 pieces, I
•1 tablespoon unsalted butter •1 medium red onion sliced into fairly thin strips •4 garlic cloves, chopped finely •5 sprigs fresh cilantro •5 sprigs parsley •1 1/2 cups water •2 tablespoons honey •1-3 inch cinnamon stick
prefer using boneless, skinless chicken thighs although
•1/2 cup dried Turkish or any apricot sliced into halves
you can use whatever you prefer.
•1/3 cup whole blanched almonds
»the how to
Once you have all your ingredients together, it’s time to start cooking. In a large bowl stir together cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, pepper and 1 teaspoon of the salt with 2 tablespoons of oil. Wash and remove any visible fat from the chicken pieces. Pat dry and place in bowl with spices and oil, coating well. Heat butter and 1 tablespoon of oil in skillet over moderate heat until hot. Brown chicken, turning once. This will take about approximately 10 minutes. Remove chicken and place on a plate. If you are planning on serving rice with your meal now is a good time to put it in the cooker. Add sliced onion and remaining salt to the skillet. Cook until tender, stirring often. Once the onion is tender, add your garlic and cook for a few more minutes. Tie your cilantro and parsley together in a bundle with a kitchen string. Add to skillet with onion and garlic and 1/2 cup of water, and the chicken.
Reduce heat and simmer covered for 30 minutes. While your chicken is cooking, place honey, remaining cup of water, cinnamon stick, and apricots in the sauce pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered until apricots are tender - about 10 to 15 minutes. The liquid should be reduced to a glaze. This is a good time to prepare the couscous; it takes only a few minutes. Couscous is in the rice isle of most grocery stores and should be in a box. There are several different flavors or you may prefer it plain. While the chicken and the apricots cook, heat remaining oil in a small skillet over moderate heat and cook your almonds stirring often until golden in color, about 1-2 minutes. Place almonds on a paper towel and drain any excess oil off. Everything is almost ready. Can you smell all the different spices and aromas as they meld together? Umm, umm, ono - luscious. Ten minutes before chicken mixture is done, add apricot mixture. Discard bundle of herbs and cinnamon stick. Serve chicken with rice or couscous and sprinkle with almonds. Don’t forget to pray for the Moroccans as you enjoy this meal.

gems
along t h e w a y Dear Amy,
From a pastor’s heart flow gems of wisdom that have been collected along the way. These treasures have been mined, cut, and polished by life’s trials and are presented here as a gift from a father to his children. Mined from over a decade of experiences, these truths will sparkle as you read them, bringing the Father’s light into your heart.
Yesterday, I got a painful lesson in the difference between acceptable behavior and wise behavior. Acceptable behavior is simply doing what is expected of you, kind of like doing “C” work. You don’t make waves and don’t offend anyone. Unfortunately, nothing significant happens either. You go through your day without bringing any zest, impact, or flavor to anyone’s life! My “C” day started when I was getting my driver’s license renewed at the police station. While I was there, the mayor walked in and started talking to people. I felt prompted to go over, introduce myself, and tell him that I was going to pray for him and his leadership. But I didn’t follow through. I was too shy, and actually, I didn’t want to do anything “out of the ordinary.” So I didn’t bother him. I also didn’t give God a chance to do anything significant in his life either. Later on, I bought some poinsettias for a lady in our church who was sick, and when I was walking back to my car, I passed a tavern. A barmaid was standing outside the door, crying. I felt prompted to give her the flowers and tell her that Jesus knew about her tears. Again I passed the opportunity by. I didn’t want to do anything out of the ordinary. I was satisfied with acceptable behavior, and as a result, I didn’t make a difference in that woman’s life. Driving down the road, there was a man holding a cardboard sign asking for work. He looked willing and genuine. I guess he had just hit hard times and even a couple hours of work might help him to get dinner for his family. The man driving the car in front of me stopped next to the man, rolled his window down, made a rude comment, cursed and drove off. I saw the face and heart of the willing worker drop. He awkwardly glanced at the ground embarrassed, and didn’t look up when I drove by. Although I was angry at the insensitive driver, I didn’t do much better. I simply drove on by like the righteous Levite passing the wounded traveler on the way to Jericho. I didn’t want to do anything out of the ordinary. Afterwards, I felt so inadequate. I asked Jesus to give me another chance, and He has. In fact, today, I’ve already had several new opportunities to encourage people! God is so good. He never speaks to us with words of condemnation, but rather in words of invitation…yes, an invitation to another chance! And He will give you another chance, too. watch for it. Don’t ever settle for “acceptable” Christian behavior. All He wants are teachable hearts, people who are wise enough to be unsatisfied with being C-average Christians. I’m so glad Jesus didn’t settle for an average life! I’m so glad He reached out to me and did something “out of the ordinary”! And He will give you the chance to take that baton and continue living life above the average! Take it. Because of a second chance, Dad
