As a young boy growing up in Palolo Valley, I fondly remember May always starting with Lei Day on the first day of May and then Mother’s Day would follow a few weeks later. Soon after this, I knew school would be out of session and that the long days of summer would be filled with memories of fun, friends and family.

MAY

Aloha! The Month of May is brimming with late spring and early summer blessings! My son Aaron and Ui had their first child. Anna and I are especially thrilled because Elliana is our first grandchild born in Hawaii.

really are special, aren’t they? They are like gifts that are guardians of My mother, Michie Takasaki, was all of 4 feet 9 1/2 inches tall. She was a second-generation immigrant from Japan. My parents got divorced when I was about five years old, and she raised the four of us in Palolo Valley. As a single mom, she worked as a waitress in the Flamingo Restaurant. Mom always tried to me to do things right, and over the years I’ve found how true that is! These are some of the timeless truths my mom taught me:

“Stay on the path! Don’t take shortcuts! It causes erosion!” God is saying, “Live life according to my ordinances!” We see the breech of this replayed in the Old and New Testaments, when people tried to take shortcuts.

Honor those whom God has placed in your life. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth” (Eph. 6:1-3). To honor our parents or those who are elders to you means to try to understand them, factor what they say into your decision-

05 Life@ itsBest

Seek to be instructed. It doesn’t matter how old you are, as soon as you stop learning, you stop living. If I stop learning then there’s no raw material for vibrant life to take place. Then I’m re-hashing the old again and telling everyone what I did back when I was in my heyday. Mom always encouraged me to keep learning. It will keep the growth tip fresh and raw in your life. That’s where life begins to sprout. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding, whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check, otherwise they will not come near to you” (Ps. 32:8-9). God doesn’t want to put a bit and bridle in your mouth in order to pull or get you to move. God will guide us and instruct us if we are willing to seek to be instructed. Wisdom will be released when you ask. If you don’t ask though, you can die and starve in a land of plenty. In closing, if we’ll just tap into the gems from our kupuna, just think what a wonderful place this will become. There will be wholeness and fruitfulness and we will be reminded of values that are timeless pearls of wisdom.

2009

“Do not move the ancient boundary which your fathers have set” (Prov. 22:28). There are boundaries that God has put into place and a reason they have been set. Other things may come and go, but the Word of our God contains timeless truths. As parents, there is no greater joy than when they see their children beginning to set their compasses, decisions, lives and futures by timeless truths as found in the Word of God! “…To him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God” (Ps. 50:23). It’s so easy to circumnavigate God’s instructions. I’m reminded of this when I go up to Diamond Head, where at the crest there is a breath-taking view that spans all the way from Koko Head to Waikiki Beach. Along the way, there’s a sign on the pathway that should be hanging in every home and in every church. It says this:

making, and be respectful and cordial to them. God is saying when you do that, it will go well with you.

MAY

The Word of God contains Timeless Truths.

If you’ve been reading along with us in the daily devotions, you will have recently come through a time where David has begun to take back the Ark of the Covenant from the Philistines. The Levites knew that they were not to carry the Ark except with poles on their shoulders. They began to carry the Ark, which is a big box representing the presence of God, that no layman was to touch or look into. They put the Ark on a cart drawn by oxen and as they took it from the Philistines, the oxen began to stumble! This caused the cart to tip and a man named Uzzah put his hand out to stop the Ark from falling and God struck him dead! At this point David questioned why this happened: “Because you did not carry it at the first, the Lord our God made an outburst on us, for we did not seek Him according to the ordinance” (1 Chr. 15:13). God is saying there is a way He wants us to do life. He wants us to know that we can’t compromise or take shortcuts and think that there are no consequences. God’s Word is timeless.

he earthquake that generated the great Indian

Ocean tsunami of 2004 is estimated to have released the

energy of 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Giant forces that had been building up deep in the

Earth for hundreds of years were released suddenly on December 26, unleashing a series of killer waves that sped across the Indian Ocean at the speed of a jet airliner.

By the end of the day more than 150,000 people

were dead or missing and millions more were homeless in 11 countries, making it perhaps the most destructive tsunami in history.

One village that was devastated by the tsunami is

Peraliya, Sri Lanka. More than 2,000 people on an overloaded

train traveling through Peraliya and 1,200 people from the

village were killed. A few weeks after the tsunami, a relief team from New Hope arrived. The team provided medical assistance and emotional support for the survivors in addition to collecting bodies of the victims.

Recently, The Third Wave‌, a documentary chronicling

the work accomplished by the various relief workers, was

released by director/relief worker Alison Thompson. The film

has won awards in the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, the City of Angels Film Festival in Los Angeles, and the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France.

The New Testament Book for April

Why are these books important? These books continue to tell the history of David’s life and his reign as king of Israel. Many of the Psalms are songs that David wrote during his lifetime and were sung in the Temple. Proverbs is a book of wisdom that can be applied in our daily lives.

the second king of Israel through his death.

Solomon David’s son with Bathsheba. He be-

came the third king of Israel. God asked him what he wanted, and he asked for wisdom to lead the people. He became the wisest man on earth. Under his rule the Temple was built and Israel became extremely wealthy and powerful. His many wives led him away from following God and this led to Israel being divided after his death. He wrote the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes & Songs of Solomon.

Why is this book important? In Thessalonians 1 & 2 Paul is writing to a young church encouraging them in their faith and explaining about Jesus’ return. In Romans he addresses our hope in Christ and the basis of our faith. What time frame does this cover? Around 50 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Who are the main characters?

Paul wrote two letters to believers in Thes-

salonica, and one to those in Rome. Paul was a Pharisee named Saul who persecuted believers in Christ before he had a revelation of Jesus. He then became known as Paul and took the gospel to many places where Jesus’ name had never been known. His journeys resulted in the planting of many new churches across the Mediterranean (modern Turkey, Greece, & Italy). Paul’s letters to these churches make up about one fourth of the New Testament.

“They do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces … But the greatest among you shall be your servant.” Mt. 23:5-11

This very trend visits many of us today, and the current sweeps unwary guests into its undertow. I too, am not immune from its riptide and must take constant caution. They were striving for the wrong finish line, and today all that creates is tired 21st century Pharisees. If we will focus correctly, we will be renewed like the eagle. For an eagle doesn’t fight the wind but uses it to rise above the storm. As we learn about the heart of Jesus, He will give us rest. Rest is the result of doing things right. Stress and burnout are symptoms of doing it wrong.

Well, nearly 13 years later, here I am. I have seen my youngest son and youngest daughter get married. I have 11 grandchildren, and two will be graduating from high school this year. I will soon be 66 years old, and Gerald and I just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary on March 7, 2009. How blessed our family is! I will never forget the promise I made to our God nor forget the promise He made to me: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:11-13). My God has my heart. summer arriving soon, residents as well as tourists will begin to flock to the beautiful beaches that surround our island paradise. Summer seems to be synonymous with outdoor activities. Although the sun possesses many beneficial qualities required in order for life to flourish, it can also be harmful. Proven results of the sun’s invisible UV rays range from the highly prized golden brown tan to skin cancer. This article discusses the importance and proper use of sunscreens in order to avoid the damaging effects of the sun’s UV rays. There are two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB. UVB rays primarily affect the surface of the skin, causing sunburns. UVA rays tend to go deep into the skin and are associated with premature skin aging. Both UVA and UVB rays are linked to skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to use sunscreens before going out into the sun. Each year more than 1 million cases of skin cancer are reported in the United States and 90% of them are linked to sun exposure. In addition to skin cancer, years of too much sun can cause premature aging of the skin and

cataracts. The best way to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun is to limit your exposure especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. However, if you have to or just want to be out in the sun between those hours, be sure to wear protective clothing, sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays, and sunscreen (for the lips too). Don’t be fooled by a cloudy day or if you’re in the water, because clouds only block up to 20% of the sun’s UV rays and water doesn’t block any. Use a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 or higher and protects against both UVA and UVB. SPF measures the degree of protection a sunscreen gives against UVB. For example, if a person can stay in the sun for 30 minutes before beginning to burn, the person can prolong that time to 300 minutes by using an SPF 10 sunscreen. Look for a Seal of Recognition on the sunscreen product by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). This assures that the manufacturer has submitted extensive formulation and scientific testing data, evidence of broad spectrum protection, water and sweat resistance, and show no signs of photo toxicity. Aveeno Continuous Protection and Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection SPF 55 were the first to receive the Seal of Recognition. Even if you buy a sunscreen that has the Seal of Recognition, you will not receive its optimal benefit if it is not applied properly. Proper application begins by using one-half teaspoonful (you don’t have to bring a teaspoon with you, it’s okay to estimate) to each of the following areas: face, neck, each arm, shoulder, front torso, back torso, and one teaspoonful on each leg at least 15-30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Reapplication should take place every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Now that we are all knowledgeable of the sun’s harmful rays and how to protect against them, have a great summer and remember; stay healthy spiritually as well as physically!

The Value of a Mother’s Love My dear son Aaron, Yesterday you asked Mom what would happen if you died.

“Would you have a funeral and then bury me?”

“Yes,” she replied with obvious concern.

“Will I go to heaven?

“Yes,” she replied.

“How will I know that for sure?”

“Because the Bible says that if you believe in Jesus, ask for forgiveness, and receive Him as Lord, you will be saved.” (You have a smart Mom!)

“What should I tell Jesus right now to let Him know I want to go to heaven?”

At that point you prayed, asked Jesus into your heart, and let Him be Lord of your life. Each of us must make that decision, and I thank God for a sensitive Mom who knows Jesus in such a way that she can accompany you to the throne of the King! Pray for your mom. She knows Jesus very well, and as she’s walking through life with you, she can tell you lots more about Him. Thanking Jesus for you & Mom! Rodrigo was born with a deep love and passion for music. Although he has made many CD’s, concerts tours, and performances worldwide since the age of 15, it has only been in the most recent years that he has been able to play with a new-found joy and inspiration that has come from having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Rodrigo came to the Lord through the ministry of Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel California in Costa Mesa. When he came to California, his music agent was a Christian who invited him to church. Just to keep his agent from bugging him more, Rodrigo said he would go with him. At that Sunday service, he felt the truth of God pierce his heart as he heard Pastor Chuck teach and he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ.

How To Listen To na A `OhaSermon Rich Wilbur &

5

pastorrichtips Pastor of New Hope We s t O ` a h u

How many sermons have you listened to in a year? If you are like the average Christian, you will listen to two or more sermons a week for a total of 104 per year. It is not inconceivable to suggest that some Christians listen to between 175-200 sermons a year! That’s a lot of sermons. I have been a Christian since the age of twelve. At fifty years old, I have listened to a lot of sermons. Over the course of time, I have discovered five tips on how to listen to a sermon:

1

First, show up with a sincere desire to discover the will of God. God is forever present, and He is not silent. He wants you to know His will for your life. Sincerely listen with that desire in mind.

2

Bring your Bible with you. God’s Word is infallible. Follow the preacher with your Bible closely as he quotes God’s Word. Underline Bible verses or circle key words. If you use your Bible as you listen, you will become proficient in knowing where meaningful passages and stories are located.

3

Lay aside the slightest pre-judgement about the speaker. We sometimes think, “What could I possibly learn from him?” If you have this lodged in your heart, you will miss out on a fresh Word from God. God spoke through a donkey in the book of Numbers, and He is able to use anyone.

4

Don’t put speakers on a pedestal. Some speakers we dismiss, others we tend to listen to exclusively. “If my favorite speaker is not speaking, I am not going to church.” The speaker is human, but remember, the Word of God is infallible.

5

Make specific applications to your life from every point that’s made. Don’t leave a service with a small heart. Walk away determined to practice what you just heard. If you do this, you’ll remember the sermon a lot longer than two days.

I always knew there was a job out there for me that I would fall in love with, but when and how we would meet was the question. So when those carefree days in high school quickly waned away, I scanned desperately through pages of college brochures looking for the major that would make my heart skip a beat. I thought that when I found it my life would finally be complete, and I would live out the rest of my days in unadulterated bliss, having all my dreams and desires fulfilled. It just so happened that I found my match in a Music major at a Christian college, and although we spent four committed years together, the happily ever after was not what I had expected.

om’s ove ory

Less than two years after taking that walk that placed a coveted and costly piece of paper in my name, I walked down another aisle and made a vow that would forever trump my relationship to my trade. My experience as a new wife would be my first indication of the profession that I would ultimately claim as my own, but at this point it remained foggy in the outer corners of my mind as I continued trying to pursue a direction that aligned most with my degree. It wasn’t long before greater clarity began to grow inside of me and the deciding factor in choosing the career of my dreams was about to come. On December 7, 2007, she came. She was one-foot-seven inches and seven pounds, a tiny, helpless seed of potential entirely dependent on me for nutrients, understanding, and sheer survival. One day she would have to learn to walk, but who would help her back up when she fell? One day she would have to learn to talk, but who would tell her the right words to say? One day she would have to make a decision between doing the right thing and the wrong thing. Who would teach her to choose to do the right thing? As I cradled her feeble little body against mine day and night those first few weeks of her existence, I knew what the answer to those questions would be. It didn’t matter anymore how many hours I had put into practicing my instrument, how hard I had worked to get where I was, or how much it cost me to earn a title to my name, the most important career of all had captured my heart—Mom. I have recently celebrated one year in this business, and although the excitement and joy of finding my calling has for the most part persisted, the workload has not always been easy or enjoyable. I admit there were times when I questioned whether laundry, dirty diapers, and children’s storybooks could ever truly produce a fulfilling life. I fantasized about careers where my name might be on a plaque, or in print, or better yet, on a paycheck! I’ve held onto the hope that one day I will get to sleep in, have more free time, and finish the project I started several months ago. But I’ve come to embrace the truth that sleep, and free time, and projects don’t have nearly the significance or priority they used to—neither do status, or recognition, or title, or money, or fashion, or hobbies, or anything else that once held my affections. I found my one true love—my family! And even though life will inevitably afford me plenty of other opportunities and experiences someday, my family will always be dearest to my heart. It’s a dream come true. I’ve fallen in love with being Mom!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

7.5

Between word-for-word and thought for thought. While easy to read and widely accepted by evangelical Christians, the goal was to have an accurate translation.

For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (and unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

11

Word-for-word A popular translation used to help understand the hidden meaning of many of the Greek and Hebrew words. This version expands the text with alternative renderings and explanations added in parentheses.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

10

Essentially literal, Word-for-word As modern versions go, the ESV is counted by many as one of the best for use in teaching ministry. It is a modern update of the RSV and more literal than the NIV.

God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.

5.6

Thought for thought Written in simple language, for the elementary-school level reader, but it is not a paraphrase.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Word-for-word Many find it difficult to read as it was produced, in 1611 in old English. Not only was it superior to all its predecessors, but its excellence was so marked that no further revision was attempted for over 250 years.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

11

Word-for-word The NKJV revisers followed the essentially literal method of translation used in the original King James Version, just updating and modernizing the wording.

This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.

8.5

Paraphrase Readable and accurate, using the tone of contemporary English to communicate to the modern reader, but not meant to be a study Bible.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

11

Word-for-word The NASB continues to be considered one of the most literal versions commonly used in churches today.

God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life.

5.6

Thought for thought A readable and simple translation.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

6.3

Thought for thought Taken from the original languages, translating entire thoughts into natural everyday English.

“EQUIPPING SERVANT LEADERS OF EXCELLENCE & DEVOTION WHO CHANGE

It’s hard to believe Pacific Rim Bible College started as the School of Church Planters in an old office in Kaimuki. Now 10 years later, we have outgrown those walls and are blessed to share a space at Sand Island with New Hope Oahu. Our staff has grown, our faculty has grown, and our student body has definitely grown, with more than 50 students who have graduated with a Certificate, Associate of Arts, or Bachelor of Arts. Over the last 10 years, approximately 900 students have passed through

THE WORLD

our classrooms, 60 have church planted, over 100 are pastoring, and nearly another 100 are leading ministries.

FOR CHRIST.”

Pacific

Rim Bible College is not just for students that reside in Hawaii but

is effective in reaching students far and wide across the Pacific Ocean. Our current student body consists of students from China, Japan, Malaysia, Argentina and Denmark, and prospective students for the Fall 2009 semester will include those from Brazil, Pakistan and Norway. Our students have come from 20 different countries and from 94 different churches and denominations. We even have an additional 80 students from around the world taking on-line courses for their continuing education!

One of

our former students, Talo Sataraka, is now the Senior Pastor of New

Hope Tokyo and has planted 5 daughter churches, Pac Rim Bible School-Tokyo, and a preschool in Japan. “Pacific Rim Bible College has given me the tools to my leadership skills and taught me creative ways to reach people in a cross cultural setting,” says Pastor Talo. Bachelor of Arts in Theology. Pat comments, “After graduating from Pacific Rim Bible College, I plan to keep serving Jesus as an intern with Thrive High School Ministry at New Hope Oahu. Eventually, I hope to become a pastor at New Hope.”

Besides celebrating our 10th anniversary, we are excited to announce that the

Bible College was awarded candidate status from the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) in February. Candidate status is a pre-accreditation status granted to those institutions that meet the ABHE Conditions of Eligibility and that possess such qualities as may provide a basis for achieving accreditation status within four years. Candidate status also means that PRBC can immediately apply for Title IV eligibility, allowing students access to federal and state financial aid and loans. There are a number of other financial benefits, including eligibility for Hawaii Community Foundation Scholarships and Military Tuition Assistance.

The faculty, staff, students and board members are humbled to be a part of

the endeavors that God is allowing the college to accomplish. We are also ecstatic to witness the future happenings that are in store for us! We ask that you continue to keep us in prayer as we move forward in equipping servant leaders who change the world for Christ.

Currently there are over 5,000 people in the Hawaii prison system, and more than 1,600 are confined in mainland prisons. For every person that is incarcerated, there are family members in need of healing, counseling and support. The mission of New Hope’s Prison Ministry is to extend Jesus’ love not only to those incarcerated, but also to the children who have a parent in prison. We are involved with the Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program, funded in part by Keiki O Ka Aina Family Learning Centers of Hawaii. In addition to mentoring, each summer we host Camp Agape, organized by Pastor Roy Yamamoto of our Prison Ministry, and the Angel Tree gift program. Throughout the year, together with the power of Jesus Christ, New Hope reaches out to thousands of families. One such family, the Jenks `Ohana, has been positively affected by the Mentoring Program, Camp Agape and Angel Tree. Michelle Jenks and her eight children (ranging in age from 2 years to 17 years) live in Makaha. Her husband is serving time in prison. “What New Hope gave to my family has been a BIG blessing!”

NewHope Mentoring Program

Looking back to 2006 when Michelle’s husband was sent to prison, Michelle recalls softly, “It was devastating to my kids when dad went away. The Mentoring Program, through God’s love at Camp Agape, broke the walls down, and since then, all my kids are doing much better.” This past Christmas, Pastor Roy Yamamoto, Judge Mike Town and several leaders drove to Makaha to deliver gifts to the Jenk’s home. “It blew me away that they would drive all the way out here to deliver gifts to my kids.” Today, Michelle and her children have a lasting relationship with her extended New Hope ‘Ohana.

Taking A Turn for the Better...

theartofserving

As a volunteer for New Hope, the joy of serving is an exhilarating journey. I took several classes at New Hope’s Hearts in Motion to learn how to dance, and two years later I auditioned for the Hip-hop Core Team. Since then, I’ve learned what it means to serve with a joyful heart and understand that I can be a tool for Him to work through. Seeing all the volunteers at church doing what they can to lead people to Christ is an amazing sight, and knowing that we are all serving with a purpose to show God’s love to others makes it worth the extra mile. Serving is one of the main ways to help the body of Christ, but learning more about Him and His Word is just as necessary. I participate in Bible studies to learn a lot about myself and about the One whom I serve. As a young leader, learning about and getting to know Christ are key elements in becoming a better example to others whether on or off the stage. Knowing that God sees my efforts and my heart as I dance is all I need. Furthering the kingdom of God is our ultimate goal, and I do that by volunteering and serving the Lord through what I do best.
