JACKALS AT A GLANCE: With 10 games remaining in the regular season, the Jackals enter Friday’s series opener against Brockton atop the second half standings, a half game ahead of the Worcester Tornadoes. If the season ended today, the Jackals would qualify as the second seed in the four-team playoffs.
SERIES SUCCESS: The Jackals have emerged victorious in each of their last five series, winning 11 of their last 14 games during that stretch.
COME ON, IRENE: Due to widely anticipated poor weather conditions this weekend, the Jackals have rescheduled their game on Sunday, August 28 as part of a doubleheader tonight. The game originally scheduled for Saturday, August 27 at 6:35 p.m. has been moved to 10 a.m. that day. Fans can attend the re-scheduled game free of charge, although no concessions will be available. Fans will be permitted to bring in outside food and non-alcoholic beverages. Fans who purchased tickets in advance of either rescheduled game may redeem their original ticket for one of equal or lesser value to any remaining 2011 regular season Jackals home game or any game up to one full calendar year from the original game’s date.
WHAT A RELIEF: New Jersey relievers have successfully converted 21 of 23 (91.3%) save opportunities this season. Last year, the Jackals converted just 22 of 29 save chances (75.8%). Five different Jackals’ relievers have saved games in 2011. Former Montclair State hurler Jeff Gogal has converted all 14 of his save opportunities.
SANDY SIGNS: On Thursday, veteran Sandy Madera signed with the Jackals to begin his third stint with the team. Madera returns to New Jersey after beginning the 2011 season in the Mexican League, where he batted a combined .325 with 19 home runs for Yucatan and Monterrey. In two previous seasons with the Jackals, the Dominican Republic native blasted 30 home runs in 132 games. In 2007, Madera posted perhaps the best offensive season in team history when he batted .364 with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs in 86 games. Madera remains the Jackals’ career leader in batting average (.359). Now in his 12th professional season, the 31-year-old boasts a .326 career average with 117 home runs. To make room for Madera, the Jackals released designated hitter Mike Jones. JACKALS ACQUIRE SABATELLA: On Tuesday, the Jackals acquired outfielder Bryan Sabatella from the Shreveport-Bossier Captains (American Association) in exchange for cash and a player to be named later. A Long Island native in his 7th professional season, Sabatella has hit over .300 in three of his first four independent seasons and stolen at least 32 bases during each of those campaigns. With the Captains in 2011, the 26-year-old was batting .350 with four home runs, 66 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases. In a corresponding roster move, the Jackals placed outfielder Chris White on the disabled list retroactive to August 21.
STARTING STRONG: New Jersey starting pitchers have allowed three earned runs or less in each of the team’s last 11 games.
MILESTONE WATCH: With 277 career hits in a Jackals’ uniform, Mike DeJesus is one hit shy of tying Craig Conway for third on the team’s career hits list... With his next home run, Myron Leslie will tie Travis Bailey for third on the team’s career list with 28. DEADLINE APPROACHING: The roster deadline for the Can-Am League is 11:59 pm ET on Friday, August 26. Players under control at that time will be those eligible for the playoffs. Players may be moved on and off the disabled list during the final ten days provided disabled player list requirements are maintained.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST WIDEMAN WINS AGAIN AS JACKALS SWEEP BEARS TO REMAIN IN FIRST PLACE - Thursday, August 25 recap Newark, N.J. – A.J. Wideman allowed just one unearned run over 6 2/3 innings of work to notch his sixth straight win as the New Jersey Jackals downed the Newark Bears, 7-1, to sweep their in-state rivals in a three-game series at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Thursday night. With the victory, their seventh in their last eight games, the Jackals maintains a first-place lead in the second-half standings with 10 games remaining in the regular season. Wideman (6-2), who won for the sixth time in his last six starts, allowed six singles in six separate innings. Steve Fox and Cody Railsback closed out the victory with 2 1/3 frames of scoreless relief. After both teams were set down in order in the first inning, New Jersey opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second. After a one-out walk by D’Angelo Jimenez, Kris Sanchez lined his team-leading 13th home run into the left field bullpen to give the Jackals a 2-0 lead. Later in the frame, New Jersey strung together four consecutive two-out singles with Sean Smith knocking home Mike DeJesus to make it 3-0. The Jackals extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning on a two-run double off the bat of Myron Leslie. Newark finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth, plating an unearned run against A.J. Wideman to make it a 5-1 contest when Brandon Watson led off with a single, stole second, and scored on an error by second baseman D’Angelo Jimenez. New Jersey tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning on a Bryan Sabatella and a Newark error to take a 7-1 lead and cap the scoring. Bears’ starter Casey Gaynor (5-3) was chased from the game without recording an out in the fifth inning after allowing five runs on 11 hits en route to taking the loss.
MOVIN’ ON UP: During an eight-day stretch from July 25 through August 2, the Jackals sold three players to affiliated organizations. On July 25, outfielder Leonard Davis (.317-9-36 w/ a league-leading 18 doubles in 52 games) had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals and was sent to Double-A Harrisburg. On August 31, second baseman and leadoff hitter Argenis Reyes (.306-2-29 w/ 12 steals in 60 games) was sold to Cleveland and assigned to Triple-A Columbus. On August 2, three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and July Pitcher of the Month James Leverton (8-4, 2.38 ERA in 13 starts) was sold to the Florida Marlins and assigned to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Jackals have sold 25 players to affiliated organizations since 2006. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their season-long eight-game winning streak, which ended on June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. FOLLOW THE LEADER: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY 1939 - Ebbets Field is the site of the first telecast of a major league baseball game. The Reds play the Dodgers in a doubleheader. Red Barber handles the broadcasts over W2XBS. The Dodgers take the first game 6-2, and the Reds take the second 5-1. 1987 - Paul Molitor goes 0-for-4 in Milwaukee’s 1-0, 10-inning win over the Indians, ending his hitting streak at 39 consecutive games. His streak was the seventh longest in major league history and the longest in the American League since Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game streak in 1941. 1992 - In the first matchup of National League knuckleballers in ten years, Pittsburgh’s Tim Wakefield outduels Tom Candiotti of the Dodgers. The last time knuckleballs floated to batters on both teams came when Phil and Joe Niekro squared off in 1982.
