SETTING THE SCENE: After finishing a three-game sweep of the Pittsfield Colonials in the first round of the Can-Am League playoffs on Saturday night, the Jackals return to the league championship series for the first time since they won the Northeast League title in 2004. The victory over Pittsfield gave the Jackals their first playoff series sweep since 2001, when they swept the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs in the first round en route to winning the Northern League title. The Jackals organization has taken home four titles in 14 seasons (1998, 2001, 2002, 2004). The Jackals have won 13 of their last 16 games overall. CAPITALES AT A GLANCE: The two-time defending Can-Am League champion Capitales return to the league championship series for the fourth consecutive season after sweeping the Brockton Rox in the first round of the playoffs. Quebec outscored Brockton, 24-4, in the first round. The Capitales won a leaguerecord 64 games during the regular season, shattering the previous mark of 58 wins in a season while finishing 64-26 and winning both the first and second halves. The Capitales, who have won 15 of their last 16 contests, posted a league-best 3.37 earned run average during the regular season while also leading the circuit in fielding percentage. A RIVALRY RENEWED: Eight of Quebec’s 26 losses this season came at the hands of New Jersey as the Jackals were the only Can-Am League squad to post a winning record against Quebec. In the first round of last year’s playoffs, Quebec swept New Jersey, three games to none. Over the past two regular seasons, the Jackals are 8-6 in Quebec City. HITTING THEIR STRIDE: The Jackals ranked second in the league with 121 stolen bases, including a league record-tying nine thefts on September 1 vs Newark. Entering 2011, the Jackals’ franchise record for stolen bases in a game was three. Sean Smith swiped four bases in a game twice (8/23 at Newark and 8/31 vs Newark) and Brian Sabatella accomplished the feat once (9/1 vs Newark) this season. The Jackals boast five players with double-digit stolen bases: Smith (49), Sabatella (24), Chris White (23), Myron Leslie (14), and Mike Richard (12). SERIES SUCCESS: The Jackals won seven of their final eight series of the regular season. Their lone series loss over that stretch was a sweep at the hands of the Brockton Rox to close out the season labor day weekend.

HEY NOW, YOU’RE AN ALL-STAR: Jackals’ pitcher Isaac Pavlik and catcher Myron Leslie were named to the Can-Am League’s Postseason All-Star Team. Pavlik finished 13-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 19 starts. The Rutherford native led the league with 112 strikeouts and 131.2 innings pitched and ranked second in wins (13), complete games (5) and shutouts (1) while posting the third-lowest ERA in the circuit (2.73). Leslie finished sixth in the Can-Am League with a career-high .328 batting average while clubbing nine homers and driving in 54 runs. SECOND CHANCE: The Jackals won 30 second-half games this year for just the second time in the team’s 14-year existence. The franchise record for secondhalf wins is 32, set in 2002 when New Jersey went on to win the Northern League title. Entering 2011, the Jackals had performed better in the first half than in the second half five of the past six seasons. ALUMNI UPDATE: Chris Miyake has been promoted to field manager of the American Association’s Lincoln Saltdogs after spending the past three seasons as the team’s hitting coach. Miyake, who was in infielder on the Jackals’ 2001 championship team, previously managed the Brockton Rox from 2006-08. CAPITALES FIRST-ROUND CAPSULES September 7 Recap Quebec 10, Brockton 1 (Quebec leads series 1-0) Quebec starting pitcher Bryan Rembisz pitched seven strong innings to help lead the Capitales to a 10-1 victory against the Brockton Rox in Game 1 of the series. Rembisz, who was just named Right-Handed Pitcher of the Year for the 2011 Postseason All-Star Team, allowed just one run on two hits while striking out two hitters to earn the win. Offensively, Quebec C Patrick D’Aoust and CF Goefrey Tomlinson each homered in the game. D’Aoust belted a three-run dinger in the eighth inning, and Tomlinson smacked a solo homer in the fifth frame and finished the game with two RBI. Also for Quebec, 1B Rene Leveret doubled and tallied two RBI, and SS Jeff Helps went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. For the Rox, LF Dan Barbero went 1-for-3 with an RBI in a losing effort.

September 8 Quebec 11, Brockton 1 (Quebec leads series, 2-0) Quebec scored in five different innings en route to an 11-1 win against Brockton at Le Stade Municipal Stadium. Quebec scored in each of the first three innings, and the Capitales racked up 13 total hits in the game while Brockton had just six. The Rox scored their first and only run in the top of the ninth inning when Keith Brachold batted in Mike Torres. Four different Capitales had multiple hits in the game, while right fielder Sebastien Boucher led Quebec with two hits, two runs and three RBI in five at-bats. Karl Gelinas, earned the win by allowing four hits, no runs, and striking out 10 batters in eight innings pitched.

September 9 Quebec 3, Brockton 2 (Quebec wins series 3-0) Third baseman Ivan Naccarata (pictured) had three hits and two runs in four at-bats to lead Quebec to a a 3-2 win against Brockton at Campanelli Stadium, and the Capitales earned a spot in the Can-Am League Championship Series which starts Tuesday. Brockton got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, but the Capitales tied the score in the top of the next frame. Quebec scored a run in both the fourth and sixth innings to win its third game of the series against the Rox. Quebec registered eight hits in the game while Brockton had seven. John Mariotti earned the win by allowing six hits and one run in seven innings pitched.

WHAT A RELIEF: New Jersey relievers successfully converted 23 of 26 (88%) save opportunities during the regular season. Last year, the Jackals converted just 22 of 29 save chances (75.8%). Five different Jackals’ relievers saved games during the 2011 regular season. MOVIN’ ON UP: During an eight-day stretch from July 25 through August 2, the Jackals sold three players to affiliated organizations. On July 25, outfielder Leonard Davis (.317-9-36 w/ a league-leading 18 doubles in 52 games) had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals and was sent to Double-A Harrisburg. On August 31, second baseman and leadoff hitter Argenis Reyes (.306-2-29 w/ 12 steals in 60 games) was sold to Cleveland and assigned to Triple-A Columbus. On August 2, three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and July Pitcher of the Month James Leverton (8-4, 2.38 ERA in 13 starts) was sold to the Florida Marlins and assigned to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Jackals have sold 25 players to affiliated organizations since 2006. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: The Jackals powered into the playoffs behind the strength of a season-long 10-game winning streak from August 23 through September 1. That streak matched the longest winning streak by any Can-Am League team this season (Quebec won 10 straight games from June 9-18). STARTING STRONG: New Jersey starting pitchers allowed three earned runs or less during a stretch of 18 consecutive games heading into the Jackals’ final regularseason series over Labor Day weekend, when the team was swept at Brockton. RACING THE CLOCK: The roster deadline for the Can-Am League was 11:59 pm ET on Friday, August 26. Players under control at that time are those eligible for the playoffs. Players may be moved on and off the disabled list during the final ten days provided disabled player list requirements are maintained. CLINCHING THE CUP: By virtue of their 9-3 record in the season series against the Newark Bears, the Jackals clinched the Essex County Executive’s Cup. The challenge was established by Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. in October upon the Bears’ announcement that they were leaving the Atlantic League to join the Can-Am League. Yogi Berra Stadium, the home of the Jackals, and Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, the home of the Bears, are separated by just 12 miles, making New Jersey and Newark the closest rivals in professional baseball. FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC: The Jackals used a pair of extra-inning, walk-off wins to sweep a doubleheader from Brockton on August 26. The Jackals emerged victorious in game one, 5-4, thanks to a pinch-hit RBI single by Kris Sanchez in the bottom of the eighth. New Jersey took the nightcap, 3-2, when Sandy Madera launched a two-out, two-strike, eighth-inning home run off the batters’ eye in his third game back with the team. Prior to the doubleheader, the Jackals had posted just one walk-off victory in their first 45 home games. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. FOLLOW THE LEADER: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

With veteran Chad Paronto on the mound for Pittsfield, All-Star catcher Myron Leslie opened the scoring with a two-out solo home run onto the hill in right field. After Chris White reached on a one-out infield single and advanced to second on a groundout, Bryan Sabatella hit a dribbler to short and Pittsfield shortstop Matt Nandin threw the ball away as Sabatella reached on an infield single and White came plateward. The Colonials scored their lone run in the top of the third inning on a two-out double into the right field corner by Danny Bomback. New Jersey capped the scoring in the seventh when Leslie stroked an RBI double after Sean Smith was hit by a pitch and stole second. Pittsfield threatened in the ninth when Billy Mottram drew a one-out walk, but cleanup hitter Angel Molina lined a ball to shortstop which Mike DeJesus snared in the air before firing to first to complete the game-ending double play. Leslie and Sabatella both finished the night 2-for-4. NEW JERSEY 8, PITTSFIELD 2

With New Jersey’s A.J. Wideman on the mound looking to win for the eighth consecutive start, Pittsfield plated a pair of first-inning runs on a one-out single by cleanup hitter Angel Molina. Those were the only two runs the Colonials would muster, however, as Wideman and a pair of relievers combined to allow just three hits the rest of the contest. Wideman earned the win for the eighth consecutive start, yielding two runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts over six innings. Steve Fox contributed a scoreless seventh inning before Josh Ellis slammed the door by striking out four batters over two perfect innings of relief. Trailing 2-0, the Jackals closed the gap in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Sandy Madera to make it a 2-1 contest. New Jersey used a pair of third-inning runs to tie the game and take their first lead of the day. With one out, Myron Leslie stroked an RBI double to score Sean Smith, who led off with a single and advanced to second on a Bryan Sabatella sacrifice bunt, and tie the game at two. Two batters later, D’Angelo Jimenez popped up to shallow center and the ball dropped between three Pittsfield defenders to allow Leslie to scamper home to give the Jackals a 3-2 edge. New Jersey never trailed after that point. Can-Am League Rookie of the Year Patrick Moran started for Pittsfield and suffered his first loss since July 10 after allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings. Moran, who went 11-3 during the regular season, had won seven straight decisions entering the night. A solo home run to right center by Kris Sanchez in the bottom of the fifth inning extended the Jackals’ lead to 4-2. In the seventh, the Jackals loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mike DeJesus made it a 5-2 contest. With Colonials’ closer Mike Zenko on in the eighth inning, New Jersey capped the scoring with three runs to open up a commanding 8-2 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Smith and Sabatella to open the frame made it 6-2. After Leslie was intentional walked, Madera singled to right to give the Jackals a 7-2 lead. Later in the inning, the Jackals scored their final run when Mike Richard grounded out with the bases loaded. Five different Jackals collected two hits apiece as New Jersey outhit Pittsfield by an 11-5 margin. Madera drove in two runs, Sanchez doubled and homered, Leslie collected his third extra-base hit of the series, and Smith swiped a pair of bases and scored twice. JACKAL BITES: Jackals’ third baseman Nick Giarraputo was hit in the face with a pitch by reliever Chris Rubio in the bottom of the seventh inning. Giarraputo was replaced by pinch runner Mike Richard… Pittsfield’s pair of first-inning runs snapped a string of 19 consecutive scoreless innings tossed by A.J. Wideman, who has turned in two streaks of at least 19 straight scoreless frames this season and hasn’t lost since June 20… The Colonials were 38-6 during the regular season when scoring first… Pittsfield leadoff batter Jerod Edmondson has reached base safely seven times in eight plate appearances in the series… New Jersey stranded 13 runners on base in the victory. Three-year career with New Jersey (regular season): 21-8, 3.11 ERA, 39 starts, 234.1 innings, 224 hits, 150 strikeouts, 25 walks Was scheduled to start New Jersey’s season finale at Brockton on Sunday 9/4, but Jairo Mendez made a spot start to set Wideman up to pitch game two of the playoffs. In two career playoff starts with New Jersey entering 2011, Wideman is 0-2 with a 10.24 ERA (11 earned runs in 9.2 innings). In 2009, he surrendered five runs in 5.2 innings against Worcester. In 2010, he surrendered six runs in four innings against Quebec.

SEVENTH HEAVEN: Wideman finished the regular season having won his last seven consecutive starts, posting a 1.01 ERA over that span. The only other Can-Am League pitcher to win seven straight starts this season was Quebec’s John Mariotti (June 14 through July 28), who Wideman trains with during the offseason. AUGUST PITCHER OF THE MONTH: Wideman was named August Can-Am League Pitcher of the Month after going 6-0 with a 1.15 ERA in six starts. The southpaw allowed just five earned runs and 26 hits in 39 innings, walking 11 batters while striking out 21. Wideman, who was also named league Pitcher of the Month in June and July 2009, is the only hurler in Can-Am League history to win the award more than once. In three seasons with New Jersey, Wideman is 8-1 in the month of August. EARLY-SEASON INJURIES: Wideman was hampered by a groin injury most of the first half of the season. After beginning the season on the inactive list, he made two starts but was released on June 7. Wideman re-signed with the Jackals on June 20 and made two more starts before being released again on July 2. He re-signed for the second time this season on August 1 and started that night, marking his first appearance in 35 days. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Was New Jersey’s opening-day starter in 2010, but was limited to just 11 starts due to injury... In 2009, was named Can-Am League Pitcher of the Year after leading the league in wins (10-1) and ERA (2.51) and finishing second with 81 strikeouts while taking home league Pitcher of the Month honors in June and July... That season, held left-handed hitters to a .161 average while righties batted .244... In 2007, led all Toronto farmhands with 11 wins... Was traded from the Washington Nationals to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2005 in exchange for outfielder Tyrell Godwin... Pitched for Team Canada at the 2005 Baseball Senior World Cup and the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament... In 2004, would have trailed only Anibal Sanchez in ERA in the New York-Penn League had he had enough innings to qualify... Younger brother, Jordan, is a catcher in the Cincinnati Reds system.
