JACKALS AT A GLANCE: With six games remaining in the regular season, the Jackals have clinched a playoff spot. The Jackals’ magic number to clinch the second-half title is five (any combination of five wins or Worcester losses). The Jackals have won 11 of their last 12 games, including seven straight. HITTING HIS STRIDE: Since signing with the Jackals on July 25, outfielder Sean Smith has stolen 30 bases in 31 attempts. Over that span, no other Can-Am League player has swiped more than 16 bags (Rockland’s Ray Stokes). Smith currently leads the league with 42 steals, marking the second-highest single-season total of his 12-year career (Smith stole 52 bases for the Somerset Patriots in 2009). THE CANADIAN CUTTER: Tuesday night’s starter, Ontario native A.J. Wideman, has emerged victorious in each of his past six starts. Over that span, the 26year-old has posed a 1.19 ERA and has turning in four scoreless outings. With a win on Tuesday, Wideman would become just the second Can-Am League pitcher to win seven straight starts this season. FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC: The Jackals opened their most recent series against Brockton with a doubleheader sweep last Friday night, winning both games on walk-off hits in extra innings. The Jackals emerged victorious in game one, 5-4, thanks to a pinch-hit RBI single by Kris Sanchez in the bottom of the eighth. New Jersey took the nightcap, 3-2, when Sandy Madera launched a two-out, two-strike, eighthinning home run off the batters’ eye in his third game back with the Jackals. SERIES SUCCESS: Entering their current series against the Bears, the Jackals have emerged victorious in each of their last six series. The Jackals have won 15 of their last 18 games over those six series. WHAT A RELIEF: New Jersey relievers have successfully converted 22 of 25 (88%) save opportunities this season. Last year, the Jackals converted just 22 of 29 save chances (75.8%). Five different Jackals’ relievers have saved games in 2011. Kyle Gunderson has retired all 16 batters he’s faced in his first five games with New Jersey. Jared Locke has picked up wins in each of his last three appearances. After allowing seven runs in his first two outings with the Jackals, Cody Railsback has surrendered just one run in his last eight outings, turning in an 0.82 ERA over that span.
STARTING STRONG: New Jersey starting pitchers have allowed three earned runs or less in each of the team’s last 15 games. RACING THE CLOCK: The roster deadline for the CanAm League was 11:59 pm ET on Friday, August 26. Players under control at that time are those eligible for the playoffs. Players may be moved on and off the disabled list during the final ten days provided disabled player list requirements are maintained. WHO’S HOT: Kris Sanchez is riding a seven-game hitting streak and has collected six extra-base hits over that span... Myron Leslie is batting .371 over his last 10 games... Mike DeJesus has hit safely in five straight games.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS SWEEP ROX IN DOUBLEHEADER TO CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT - Monday, August 29 recap Little Falls, N.J. – The New Jersey Jackals clinched a playoff spot for the third straight season on Monday night, sweeping the Brockton Rox in a twin bill at Yogi Berra Stadium. With their pair of victories, the Jackals have now won 11 of their last 12 games and have secured at least a wild card spot in the playoffs, which begin September 7. In the first game of the day, the Jackals held off the Rox, 5-3, in the continuation of a game that was suspended by rain on Saturday morning. Brockton jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Keith Brachold sacrifice fly in the top of the first and a run-scoring single by Dan Barbero in the second. New Jersey tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, plating two runs against former Jackal Mike Petrowski on a Nick Giarraputo sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Mike DeJesus. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the skies opened up and forced the tarp onto the field, pushing the rest of the game to Monday evening. When play resumed, Brockton took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning on an errant pickoff throw by Jared Locke. In the bottom of the frame, New Jersey took advantage of four straight walks to begin the inning by Jake Loye, tying the contest at four when Sandy Madera drew a bases-loaded free pass. An RBI single by D’Angelo Jimenez later in the inning gave New Jersey a 4-3 lead before the Jackals capped the scoring in the sixth on a Bryan Sabatella RBI single. Locke (6-1) allowed one unearned run while working the fifth inning to pick up the win while Loye (3-6) absorbed the loss. Jeff Gogal pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his 15th save of the season. In the nightcap, the Jackals fell behind early before plating the game’s final five runs to pick up a 5-1 win. As the Jackals stranded five runners in scoring position through the game’s four innings, Brockton opened the scoring in the third when starter Jon Kibler doled out a pair of two out walks before Keith Brachold knocked in his Can-Am League-leading 76th run of the season to give the Rox a 1-0 lead. New Jersey finally broke through against Brockton starter Julian Sampson in the fifth inning, pushing across four runs to swing the momentum. Sean Smith laced a one-out triple and scored on a Sabatella double to even the score at 1-1. Two batters later, a Madera sacrifice fly gave the Jackals a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, two more runs came across when Brockton second baseman Mike Torres misfired a flip to second base trying for an inning-ending fielders’ choice to extend the New Jersey advantage to 4-1. The Jackals capped the scoring in the sixth when Smith drew a one-out walk, stole second, and later scored on a fielders’ choice off the bat of Myron Leslie to make it 5-1. Jon Kibler (3-5) turned in his third straight quality start to notch his third straight win, allowing one run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings. Jackals’ reliever Kyle Gunderson retired all four batters he faced to secure his second save. Sampson (9-4) was tagged with the loss.
MOVIN’ ON UP: During an eight-day stretch from July 25 through August 2, the Jackals sold three players to affiliated organizations. On July 25, outfielder Leonard Davis (.317-9-36 w/ a league-leading 18 doubles in 52 games) had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals and was sent to Double-A Harrisburg. On August 31, second baseman and leadoff hitter Argenis Reyes (.306-2-29 w/ 12 steals in 60 games) was sold to Cleveland and assigned to Triple-A Columbus. On August 2, three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and July Pitcher of the Month James Leverton (8-4, 2.38 ERA in 13 starts) was sold to the Florida Marlins and assigned to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Jackals have sold 25 players to affiliated organizations since 2006. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their season-long eight-game winning streak, which ended on June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. FOLLOW THE LEADER: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

JULY 24 PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Ellis was named Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week on July 24 after notching a pair of wins against Rockland and New York. During the week, Ellis allowed three runs on 14 hits over 12 innings. In his start at Rockland, Ellis tossed six shutout innings to notch a rain-shortened complete game. RE-ACQUIRED FROM EL PASO: Ellis was re-acquired from the El Paso Diablos on June 6 to complete an earlier trade between the teams (reliever Jon Plefka was traded to El Paso over the offseason for future considerations). With El Paso in 2011, Ellis went 0-3 with a 14.24 ERA in five starts. He allowed 42 hits in 18.1 innings with 11 walks, 21 strikeouts, and a .442 opponent average. 2010 WITH NEW JERSEY JACKALS: Was originally acquired by New Jersey from the El Paso Diablos on August 28, 2010 in exchange for cash and a player to be named later... With the Jackals in 2010, posted a 1.29 ERA in three relief appearances (one run on three hits over seven innings)... Surrendered three runs in his lone playoff appearance with the Jackals... Was traded back to El Paso following the 2010 season. 2010 WITH EL PASO DIABLOS: Was an American Association All-Star in 2010 with the Diablos after going 9-4 with a 4.61 ERA… Won eight of his first nine starts to begin 2010… Responsible for 29% of El Paso’s wins as they won just 31 games. 2009 WITH GATEWAY GRIZZLIES: Appeared in eight games in the Frontier League in 2009 when he went 1-0 for the Gateway Grizzlies. PHILADELPHIA CONNECTION: Shaun, a Philadelphia native, was drafted by the Phillies in the 32nd round in 2008 out of Polk Community College in Florida. Ellis was cut from the Phillies’ minor league camp in March 2009.
