T&T Shipbuilding & Repair Cluster
NEW LA BREA VISION proposes to establish a world-class shipyard in the coastal industrial town of La Brea, south-west Trinidad and Tobago. Shipyard to accommodate repairs to +31,000 ocean going ships that transit within 25 nautical miles each year. The Shipbuilding and Repair Development Company of Trinidad & Tobago Limited which is the commercial business entity of the Shipbuilding and Repair Cluster - an initiative of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Government of Trinidad and Tobago (GoRTT) intended to diversify the economy from the energy sector proposes to establish a world class ship repair and shipbuilding park in consultation with the La Brea community. Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618), famous explorer, writer and poet who established the first English colony in the New World, repaired his wooden sailing ship using the naturally occurring pitch from the world famous La Brea Pitch Lake in 1595.
