interventions make a lasting impact. This progress spurs us on to reach more families who can benefit from what we and our partner organizations have to offer. During the past year, Family Centers’ professionals have worked on the formation of an Achievement Gap roundtable in Greenwich. This group will assess what services already exist and identify other initiatives aimed to eliminate the academic disparity between economically advantaged and disadvantaged students. Comprised of numerous community agencies – along with the Greenwich Public Schools – this collaboration has the potential to bring about a transformational change in student outcomes.

T

he Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word opportunity as “a good chance for advancement or progress.” For the past 127 years, Family Centers has provided Fairfield County residents with the tools needed to take advantage of those “good chances.” While the means and methods may have changed along with the times, the desire to create opportunities for all children and families has remained constant. Today, we are focused on eliminating the Opportunity Gap, which prevents so many children and adults living in our communities from achieving the American Dream and their overall potential. Since this gap’s causes include structural, economic and personal issues, we aim to combat it with direct services, community mobilization, collective impact and advocacy. And our efforts are paying off! The testimonials, stories and statistics that populate the pages of this Annual Report provide evidence that Family Center’s effective 2 | Family Centers 2018 Annual Report

On the direct programming front, Family Centers has teamed up with the Greenwich United Way to deliver its Early Care Achievement Gap Solutions (ECAGS). This initiative has two primary components: The first offers the renowned Parents as Teachers (PAT) curriculum to families with children in the free and reduced lunch pipeline. By incorporating a two-generational approach, parents become stronger advocates and their children are better equipped for academic success. The second part provides in-class educational coaching for the teachers in our preschools. These efforts will enhance the performance of our students and teachers to facilitate positive, long lasting results.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word opportunity as “a good chance for advancement or progress.” Additionally, our Family First in Education program just began its third year and has added an additional 20 children for the 2018-19 school year. Boasting strong results, this partnership between

Family Centers’ Mission: Empowering Children, adults, families and communities to realize their potential. Family Centers, the Greenwich YMCA, Greenwich Public Schools and our funder, the Per and Astrid Heidenreich Foundation, demonstrates the power of collaboration. Our Family Centers Health Care (FCHC) clinic also celebrated its second anniversary this past year. In a very short time, FCHC has established a reputation as a trusted medical, dental and mental health provider for those who might not otherwise have access to these services. In Stamford, we remain committed to several significant community collaborations, including Cradle to Career. We are continuing to strengthen our relationship with Stamford Public Schools, and have recently added social work services at Stillwater Elementary School. Our Parents as Co-Educators program with Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield County, Building One Community, Stamford Public Schools and the Vita Health & Wellness District was just funded for a second three-year cycle. While this just scratches the surface, it’s safe to say that Family Centers’ role in collective impact projects is impressive. Some of our work generates fee income, but government grants and private philanthropy remain the life blood of our organization. Our Board of Directors continues to deliver year after year as the single largest fundraising group. Whether it’s supporting one of our special events, fulfilling critical governance responsibilities or acting as community advocates, the Board is a key reason Family Centers continues to thrive. Thank you to our amazing event chairs, many of

whom also serve on the Board: Center for HOPE Luncheon: Lauren Caffray, Jan Dilenschneider, and Nancy Fazzinga; London Calling Benefit: Nancy Casserley, Kate Clark, Ashley Reid, Jeannie Witmer and Abby Ritman; Scrabble Challenge: David Ball, David Tuttle and Victoria Zerjav; Friends Drive: Marge Berkley and Carl Goodnow. These remarkable individuals, along with their dedicated committee members and our generous contributors, saw to it that the funds needed to operate Family Centers’ programs were raised. In a year filled with accomplishments, it is worth noting that Family Centers received Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the 10th time. We were also named a Top Workplace in Western Connecticut by Hearst Connecticut Media for the sixth time. These recognitions are reflective of our excellent team of professionals and a culture that supports their expanding talents. We also relaunched our Associate Board this year, adding to our mix a young, community-minded professional team that is committed to promoting the important work done by Family Centers. 2018 has been a year of great effort and high performance, which we will build upon as we continue the pursuit of limitless opportunities for all of the children and adults we serve.

Collaborating to Bridge the Opportunity Gap

T

hrough our continuum of health, education and human services, Family Centers offers a two-generational approach to addressing the growing Opportunity Gap that exists in lower Fairfield County. By focusing on the entire family, our programs provide continuous support to foster children’s academic performance and increase families’ self-sufficiency. Through new partnerships and program expansion, Family Centers had solidified its commitment to narrowing the Opportunity Gap. As an impact partner of the Greenwich United Way’s Early Childhood Achievement Gap Solutions (ECAGS), Family Centers will facilitate a new program to help local families manage the challenges of parenthood. Called Greenwich Parents as Teachers (GPAT), the program provides in-home education and support to nurture parent-child bonds. ECAGS will also provide Family Centers with a coach to help strengthen its preschool curriculum. Two Opportunity Gap-focused programs also expanded in 2018. Following a successful pilot phase, the Parents as Co-Educators program

has been renewed for an additional three years. A collaborative between Family Centers, Children’s Learning Centers (CLC) of Fairfield County, Building One Community and the Vita Health & Wellness District, the Co-Ed program has made incredible strides in helping Stamford preschoolers from primarily immigrant families rise to the educational levels of their more affluent peers. Through the program’s guidance, the 20 children enrolled closed a 24% gap in kindergarten readiness at the end of the threeyear pilot period. Family First in Education has expanded to accommodate 20 additional children during the 2018-19 school year. In partnership with the Greenwich YMCA and Greenwich Public Schools, Family First in Education offers children attending school on the western side of Greenwich with quality after school programming. Parent engagement support is also provided to family members on becoming sronger advocates. Family First in Education is generously supported by a grant from the Per and Astrid Heidenreich Family Foundation.

“I fled Syria to provide a better life for my children, and Family Centers was instrumental in making the long and overwhelming process much easier. Not only has my son thrived academically at the Grauer Preschool, but the welcoming and nurturing environment has helped him acclimate to a new culture. Knowing he’s well cared for has also helped me establish a career here in the U.S. and elevate my own sense of self-sufficiency.”

“Due to issues with his hearing, Raymond’s speech was delayed and it was very difficult for him to communicate his needs. Because of the support he receives at the Gateway Preschool, he’s much more confident and able to learn. He comes home every day excited to share what he did at school, and we couldn’t be happier with his progress.”

“My daughter had always stayed at home with me, but I wanted her to have a preschool experience before entering kindergarten. When she first started, she was very antisocial and interactions with other kids would trigger anxiety attacks. I’ve seen so much growth over the past year. She’s making friends, she’s curious about learning and is happier than ever. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Head Start program was the key to preparing her for kindergarten.”

“As a parent, it’s sometimes difficult to know the best way to help your children grow educationally. The staff at the Armstrong Court Preschools have acted as coaches to guide me on ways I can reinforce what they learn in the classroom at home. I am so grateful to have that support so that I can be sure my kids can enjoy a lifetime of learning.” “The decision to enroll Sy at the Warburg Center was an easy one for us. We love that each day is structured around a curriculum that fosters positive language, fine motor skills and social development. It’s clear that Sy is learning new things all the time, and we’ve been amazed at how communicative and expressive he’s become over the past year. Having just moved to town, the staff and other parents also helped us establish roots in our new community.”

“In the span of one year, I unexpectedly lost my wife and my daughter died after a long illness. It was a horrific experience that simply ripped me apart at the core. The group I attend at the Center for HOPE has given me the strength to continue moving forward. Although each of us has a different story, we can relate to each other in some way.”

“My kids and I moved to Greenwich recently, and it was impossible to find a dental provider that accepts Medicaid. I can’t afford to pay for dental services out of pocket, and can’t travel to a neighboring town because I don’t drive. Having Family Centers Health Care in the community has given me peace of mind knowing my kids’ teeth are taken care of. Without this service, I’d be forced to delay care and run the risk of bigger health issues down the road.”

GENINE JORDAN,

“We started coming to The Den in 2014 shortly after the death of my husband. We were all a little apprehensive, but the kids soon found comfort being around others who understand what it’s like to lose someone important in their lives. The Den also provided a forum where I could go through my own mourning process. The Den is a very special place that has left a lasting impression on all of us.”

“Coming from Jamaica where it’s extremely difficult to live with HIV, it’s a godsend to be a part of a resource like Stamford CARES. In addition to ensuring I have access to medication I need to remain healthy, the team also provides emotional support, housing assistance and other services that enable me to live the best life possible. More importantly, Stamford CARES has given me the confidence to become an advocate and help others understand that HIV does not have to define them.”

“I moved to Stamford two years ago following a tragic death that affected my family. I didn’t know anyone in my new school, and the loss hit me very hard. I heard about the School Based Health Center, and decided to give it a try in hopes it would provide some support. I was surprised at how welcoming and nurturing the center was, and the team quickly became like family. Because of the Health Centers’ guidance, I’m much more confident and look forward to the future.”

JAQUELINE YAYA,

“Within a very short time, I had lost my job and a number of important people in my life. Even though I was struggling emotionally and needed to find myself, I resisted the idea of therapy and thought I could handle things on my own. I’m so glad I gave myself over to the idea of talking to someone, though. Not only am I now able to cope with stress and anxiety, I realize that it’s ok to put my needs first. I still see myself as a work in progress, but I have a firmer grasp on the things I can control and let go of the things I can’t.”

“I believe strongly that early literacy is key to helping young children attain educational success later in life. Helping four- and five-year-olds at the Grauer Preschool develop a love of reading and writing has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It's amazing to see how quickly they progress week to week, gaining a solid grounding in early social and educational development that every child deserves.”

PAVLA ROSENSTEIN,

“Now that I’m retired, I have the luxury to spend my time doing the things I’ve always wanted to do. Whether I’m mentoring a young student or conducting a mock interview with a job seeker, I consider volunteering at Family Centers to be important work. Aside from the good vibes that come from helping others, it’s incredibly humbling to make a positive impact on someone’s life.”

“I became a volunteer with The Den four years after my wife died, and it’s been an important part of my life for the past 27 years. Being able to draw from my own experiences related to loss provides families at The Den with a sense of hope, and gives me a feeling that my work makes a difference in the lives of others. Having the chance to make a meaningful impact is so special. There’s no other volunteer opportunity like it.”

“It’s been said that teaching is best described as the art of assisting discovery. For the past eight years, Mike Wheeler has helped English-language learners discover their full potential as a tutor with our Literacy Volunteers program. His creative lessons and unique approach to learning has both gained the respect of his students and inspired them to strive for continued growth. For many Literacy Volunteers students, Mike is much more than a teacher – he’s an advocate, motivator and friend.”

— Jan Dilenschneider, Past Board Chairman

— Bob Arnold, CEO

The Outstanding Volunteerism Award is named in memory of Helen “Diddy” Gratz Rockefeller, a lifelong patron, former Board Chairman and donor of the Arch Street building in Greenwich.

“The FCHC Board played a seminal role in the opening of Family Centers Health Care two years ago. Aside from embracing the difficult task of deciphering the many government requirements associated with Federally Qualified Health Centers, the Board provided the leadership necessary to establish policies and procedures. While the Board was comprised of volunteers from varying backgrounds, the group was unified by a desire to make medical, dental and mental health services accessible to all residents.”

The Family Champion Award was renamed in memory of Anne Firestone Ball in 2016. Anne was a longtime Board Member and former Chairman whose dedication to Family Centers spanned several decades.

“Izzy is the type of volunteer we all wish we could clone. During her time at the Grauer Preschool, she’s organized instructional activities and took special care to get to know each child in her classroom. Whether she’s playing with the children, reading a book or leading an activity, Izzy is always ready to jump right in. Her love of the children is evident, and we will greatly miss her when she goes off to college next year.” — Catherine Hogan, Grauer Preschool Site Manager The 2018 Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award is generously supported by JP Morgan.
