MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORS Happy New Year! While the rest of the world jots down their New Year’s Resolutions, you and I are probably busier planning our race calendar. Isn’t it exciting to know that we have a brand new year of training and racing ahead of us? If you’re keen on long distance races this year, we’ve got the gear and gadgets built for endurance events. We also feature sports bags to hold all your equipment and go places with you. Amidst all the excitement, don’t forget about the importance of recovery and strength and conditioning. We share recovery techniques to aid you as you increase your training sessions and a modified plank workout to strengthen your core. When it comes to nutrition, we’ll tell you how to use candies as fuel. Good news for athletes with a sweet tooth like me! Have a great year of training and racing ahead! See you on the road!

I recently got back from a rejuvenating holiday in Baguio, where I got to enjoy the cool highlands, breathe the fresh air, and connect with nature. The downtime was nice, I was able to sneak in a couple of bike rides and trail runs in Camp John Hay. Then I imagined our cover story this month, the Cordillera Great Traverse. It’s an expedition through the Cordillera, the highest and largest mountain range in the Philippines. The Great Traverse will be the first and longest expedition through it with a distance of over 400 kilometers, starting from Sagada, all the way to Baguio City. Now that’s an expedition! In this issue we had an awesome time interviewing the founding father of the mountain bike, Mr. Gary Fisher. He shared with us his passion for off-road cycling, and his many travels around the world. Start the year right, and you will end the year strong. Have fun, everyone!

OUR PANEL OF EXPERTS ANSWERS YOUR MOST PRESSING ENDURANCE SPORTS DILEMMAS

Starting with the (relatively) shorter distances is a great way to build your confidence and sharpen your skills.

Q A

As a beginner, how do I know when to make the jump from sprint distance to Olympic distance and further? If you are a newcomer to triathlon, don’t be in a rush to step up between distances. Starting with the (relatively) shorter distances is a great way to build your confidence and sharpen your skills. Sighting in the open water, efficient transitions, and getting the balance right with your nutrition are just some of the things that you can focus on while tackling a shorter distance race. So set some goals (results-based or otherwise) for your sprint distance races and make sure you achieve them. When it is time to move up to the Olympic (or longer) distance, be comfortable and confident of your decision. You’ll know when you’re ready to step it up!

your advice on riding Q What’s safely in wet weather?

A

Riding in wet weather can be challenging even for the most experienced athletes. To ride safely in wet weather, you’ll have to spend time riding when it is cold, windy, and wet. Make use of the time when you are riding in dry conditions to improve your bike handling skills. Always make sure your bike (especially your brakes) is in good, working order because you never know when you’ll get caught in the rain. If it does rain when you’re out cycling, slow down a little. Brake earlier when approaching corners and traffic lights. If you’re riding with a group, watch out for the spray coming off the wheel of the rider in front of you. Be sure to space

out more, give everyone a bit more room, and time to react to the condition. If you tend to run with very high pressure on your tires, releasing some air will increase the contact area of your tires with the road surface and provide more traction. Keep your hands on the hoods with your fingers on the brakes and stay focused!

would working on one leg of Q How the sport—swim, bike and run— affect my performance on the other two legs?

A

In the off season, it is not unusual for athletes to focus significantly more on one leg, while doing the bare minimum for the other two. If you’re in the thick of race season though, that isn’t a viable option. While taking training time away from the other two legs is undesirable, we have to devote the necessary time to turning a perceived weakness into a strength. If you have a running background but are new to swimming, you might be able to switch out a session at the track for an extra swim. Very often, you’ll find that the improvement in one of your weaker disciplines will allow you to be fresher for the others. In the end, it is all about balance and training to be an all-round athlete. It isn’t the fastest swimmer, cyclist, or runner that crosses the line first, it’s the fastest triathlete. —WILLE LOO

n 2011, I found myself at a bicycle shop searching for an out-of-season alternative that wasn’t too far removed from my current hobby. I didn’t realize that this would be a defining moment in my evolution and progress as a triathlete. I bought my first mountain bike with the goal of cross training on the trails during the off-season. Over the next few months, my attention was centered on developing basic skills and confidence. I quickly got addicted to the rush and adrenaline that comes from bombing through a lightning fast descent.

THE LEARNING CURVE The learning curve from road to off-road racing can be steep. My initial exposure consisted of jeep trails similar to the Park Connector paths running throughout Singapore. They didn’t require a high level of skill and the elevation changes were gradual at best. Three years later, I have a better understanding of the complexity of off-road courses. A common theme in the XTERRA AsiaPacific Tour is prolonged, almost brutal climbs. At XTERRA Philippines, Saipan, and Guam, for example, racers can expect to climb over 1,000 meters before being rewarded with amazing views. Every off-road triathlon is unique. Because every race course is defined by the landscape, prerides are required. A key strategy is to explore the “lines” and develop a rhythm on the bike section which typically ranges from 30 to 40 kilometers. Many professionals and amateurs ride the course three to four times leading into a race. It is worth noting that courses are not overly technical and designed to accommodate novice and seasoned professionals alike. As a reference, the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is much more challenging to ride than 90 percent of the off-road triathlon races. During an off-road race, the ability to stay focused while riding and to develop comfort eating

and drinking while navigating the terrain are two basic concepts to keep yourself out of trouble. Trail running is not all that different from road racing. But the benefits of trail running far outweigh the risks: less pounding on the joints and development of core muscles to support injury prevention. In terms of intensity, off-road training workouts should consist of hill repeats or brick sessions that stress on running with fatigued legs. For example, find a section of road or trail that you can complete repeats on your bike, ranging from 2 to 5 minutes in duration, and a moderately-steep incline to run hard on immediately after you transition from the bike to run. This is important as cramping while running through creeks, jumping over trees, or climbing steep grades is a very likely possibility.

XTERRA ASIA-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES If you want to give off-road triathlon a try, there is no better place to start than the XTERRA Asia-Pacific Series. Some of these races have been around for over a decade. XTERRA Guam has been tagged by Triathlon magazine as one of top 10 triathlons in the world. New this year is the relocation of XTERRA Malaysia venue to Langkawi, a mountain biker’s paradise. XTERRA Japan will be contested in the Hokkaido Prefecture region. XTERRA Philippines will also explore a new venue in Albay, under the shadow of the majestic Mayon Volcano. The AsiaPacific Championship will be held in Australia. Each of the championship races offer qualification slots to the XTERRA World Championship in Maui. The growing popularity of off-road triathlons presents triathletes with an endless array of races and exotic destinations. The first step is to commit to training by registering for an upcoming race; the adventure will soon follow. ENDURANCE SPORTS | WWW.ENDURANCE.PH

The Pean ut butter an d Banana combo This is definitely a deliciously nutritious combination. Bananas are packed with carbohydrates and are an excellent source of potassium. Peanut butter contains protein and a bit of fat, especially if it’s the chunky variant. Give your kids this toothsome treat before, during, and after their training.

THE GUMMY TWIST

CANDIES AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO YOUR REFUELING STRATEGY BY SEAN SIM Endurance athletes are commonly advised to take in solid food during the course of their routine, especially those that last for more than 60 minutes. In an interview published at momsteam.com, internationally renowned sports nutritionist Nancy Clark, MS, RD, CSSD, said that gummy candies may be used as fuel during such athletic endeavours. These candies may be those prepared specifically for athletes or those for kids. She said, “The bottom line: All are equally effective. And because we’re talking more about ‘survival’ rather than ‘good nutrition’ during endurance exercise, you

don’t have to feel guilty if you use candy as fuel. Sugar is what your body wants! Remember, too, that sports gels and sports drinks are also ‘just sugar.’” Gummy candies are almost entirely made from sugar, which is a simple carbohydrate. In 2008, the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), a non-profit academic society dedicated to promoting the science and application of evidence-based sports nutrition, advised that about 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates must be consumed for every hour of training. If you’re going to be gobbling up Gummy Bears, it means you’ll need around

47 of them; 18 pieces account for 26 grams or 102.3 calories from carbohydrates. Some sports nutrition companies have created their own chews, whose consistency is somewhat similar to gummy candy. You might want to try Clif Shot Blok Chews (three pieces equals 24 grams of carbohydrates or 100 calories), or Gatorade Prime Energy Chews (six chews contains 24 grams of carbohydrates or 100 calories). If you want to go all natural, check out Honey Stinger’s Organic Energy Chews which features natural flavors and uses honey as its main sweetener.

Endurance athletes are advised to take in solid food during the course of their routine. About 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates for every hour of training is recommended.

You’ll normally see freestyle swimmers, cyclists, and triathletes with hunched backs like their shoulder blades were poking out of their backs. This is probably because of their short and tight chest muscles (pectoralis minor) along with long and most likely weak serratus anterior muscles. This posture is also common among people with desk jobs. The serratus anterior muscle originates from the upper ribs and is attached to the medial part of the scapula. Also known as the boxer’s muscle, its primary function is to stabilize the scapula. It also helps in the pulling of the scapula forward during the initial catch and recovery phases of swimming.

S

Here’s an exercise that can transform your boring front planks into something that can save your shoulders. STEP 1 Start in a modified plank position with your elbows bent and forearms touching the floor. Don’t forget to engage your butt muscles and always keep your back flat. STEP 2 Lower your body while maintaining it in a straight line. STEP3 While pushing your elbows into the floor, push your shoulder blades apart and simultaneously lift your body. Try to maintain a straight body during the movement.

This exercise not only strengthens your core but also protracts your shoulder blades for scapular stability.

NECK AND SHOULDER PAIN IS COMMON AMONG CYCLISTS BUT CAN BE PREVENTED According to Dr. Nathan Wei, a rheumatologist and author, the importance of posture must not be underestimated when it comes to understanding the neck and shoulder pain experienced with cycling. The way you hold your spine during vigorous (or even leisurely) physical activity has a tremendous effect on your bones, muscles, tendons, nerves and joints. This is especially true for athletes, such as cyclists, who hold flexed postures for prolonged periods. Riding a bike can be hard on the body, but proper conditioning and postural exercise can help you remain healthy and pain-free while on the bike. THE PRACTICALITY OF

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING Functional resistance training has been used by many athletes not only to elevate their game, but also to keep injuries at bay. This type of resistance training promotes better performance due to improved joint stability and exercise economy as it stimulates proper neuromuscular firing. This kind of coordination between muscle and nerves differentiates great athletes from mere mortals. These exercises teach different muscles to work in a synchronized way, allowing for specific patterns of contraction and relaxation. The deltoid (bulky shoulder) muscle, for example, is a large single muscle with broad origins and exertions. It has three segments: anterior, medial, and posterior. This kind of muscle has smaller muscles which are independently controlled and activated depending on the intended motion’s direction and line of action segment. This kind of order enables our brain to fine-tune muscle activity to accomplish the desired movement. When strengthening muscles, which mimic a set of movements either from sports or daily life, both the neural and muscular aspects must be engaged. This is vital especially when it comes to movements which demand strength. A newly acquired skill is rarely transferred to other types of movements, even when used by the same muscle group. It doesn’t follow, for example, that a good cyclist would also be a good runner. Both involve the legs, true, but use different movements and firing patterns.

BREAKING BORDERS

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE NORTHERN PHILIPPINES’ MOST STUNNING VISTAS THROUGH THE CORDILLERA GREAT TRAVERSE BY SARAH MORAN

I

t all started with a Facebook post by ultra runner and race organizer Jonnifer Lacanlale in May last year, wondering aloud if there were connecting trails along the six provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) including Baguio City. Attorney Jon, as he is better known in the ultra running community, believed that the Philippine Cordillera would be the ideal and ultimate venue for the longest trail expedition in the Philippines. At 5,000 feet, the Gran Cordillera is the highest and largest mountain range in the country. It is known as ‘The Cool Highlands of the Philippines,’ a climatic escape from the tropical weather that covers most of the Philippines. His online musings caught the interest of mountaineers, explorers, fitness enthusiasts, and nature lovers, who share the passion for exploration and nature preservation. It didn’t take long before an initial core of determined like-minded individuals banded together to help Atty. Jon take the first steps to forming what would later be known as the Cordillera Great Traverse, or CGT. With their athletic backgrounds, technical knowhow, commitment, and passion, the men and women behind this project aim to establish and connect the six provinces of CAR, namely Abra, Kalinga, Apayao, Ifugao, Benguet, Mountain Province, and the charter city of Baguio in one contiguous course. The CGT Team aims to capitalize on shared knowledge and skills to unearth a natural treasure that will put the Philippines in the same light as some of the world’s most famous trails and traverses such as the 3,500 km Applachian Trail in the USA, the 250 km Great North Walk in Australia, The 220 km Drakensberg in South Africa, and the 180 km Gran Recorrido 20 in Corsica, Europe.

From the initial meetings held in June 2014, the team has put together the three-fold mission of the CGT, stated briefly as:

CONNECT (The Trails). The Traverse will allow the team to establish the longest and most scenic hiking/trekking trail destination in the Philippines. This will be done through research, mapping, and immersion with the locals.

EXPLORE (The Philippine Cordillera). The Traverse will allow the team, and eventually the public, to learn the culture of each ethnic group, which have held the mountains as home for centuries. The locals will act as guides to establish trails and trigger more discoveries about the region.

(The Environment). The Traverse will serve as a means to mutually exchange knowledge on how to protect the mountains. As trails are mapped through the Traverse, preservation and protection of the Cordillera Mountains will be of utmost priority. Awareness for the preservation of the environment will be enhanced through education of visitors to the traverse, as well as volunteer and fund-raising efforts focused on such. It is the objective of CGT team, with vital cooperation and support from national agencies, local government units, and indigenous tribes, to provide an unspoiled, healthy, and safe environment for people of all walks to experience the natural splendor of the Philippine Cordillera.

Benguet From July to October 2014, the team worked on course plotting, research and coordination, included are securing appropriate registration with the government agencies and regulatory boards, and tapping NGOs, environmentalists, government agencies, the local communities and volunteers to achieve their goal. November 2014 to March 2015 is dedicated to plotting reconnaissance routes, trail mapping, community immersion, GPS plotting and course marking. Majority of the trails have been already established and connected, and the remaining months will be devoted to completing the entire traverse route. Connecting the trails is no small feat by any measure. Teams of three to five people cover as few as twenty kilometers a day due to the uncompromising uphill gradients and arduous terrain in some sections. April 2015 will mark the launch of this monumental tour, The Expedition, and the aim is to journey across the entire traverse in one push, establishing the legitimacy of the CGT through a community/industry-recognized metric called the Fastest Known Time (FKT). But connecting the trails is only the beginning of the CGT’s mission. To activate the second leg, Explore, will require months and maybe years of working with the local communities and LGUs to make the trails that run through their provinces visitor friendly for the city-dwellers who plan to make sporadic trips to the areas of interest. The trails will have to ensure the safety of visitors, while providing a pleasant and worthwhile trek through nature’s bountiful splendor that can only leave its guests overwhelmed and transformed. The male and female overall winner will be declared as Corregidor Marathon Man and Woman. Besides the full marathon, CM will also have the 5K Blitz, a shorter distance category.

CHALLENGE PHILIPPINES

FEBRUARY 21, 2015 SUBIC AND BATAAN

Get ready for two of 2015’s most exhilarating races: Challenge Philippines in Subic/Bataan (also dubbed as Challenge “Tough”) and Challenge in Camarines Sur (Challenge “Fast”). Challenge in Subic/Bataan is expected to draw 750 athletes while over a thousand triathletes are forecast to join the Challenge Camsur. The course in Subic/Bataan on February 21 is definitely tough, even as it entices participants with its crystal blue waters, punishing hills, and breathtaking views. The swim course starts from the white sand beaches of Camayan Beach Resort and ventures into IIanin Bay and the pristine waters of a protected marine area. The bike course runs parallel to the coastline into Bataan, including rustic towns and bucolic rice fields. The hilly course heads into Subic then returns to Adventure Beach. The run course takes triathletes through the shaded and rolling terrain of IIanin Forest. Challenge Camsur will be

no less than a crowd- and participant-pleaser itself. In fact, it is record-breaking for being the fastest course in the Philippines and one of the fastest in Asia. Its swim course starts in Lago del Rey Pequeno, then a 400m swing delivers you to Swim Leg 1 exit and onto a flat surface and sprints to Lago Del Rey Grande for a straight shot and big out and back swim. After a strength-sapping swim, athletes will make a quick exit out of the park and blaze towards the scenic vistas of Mount Iriga and Mount Isarog. Mount Isarog will be the backdrop towards the town of Ocampo. A Challenge Fast Time Bonus after the Ocampo U-Turn will be added to the main race course. Challengers make their way back towards the scenic Camsur Watersports Complex, and finally head towards the finish line. Organized by the Challenge Family, in partnership with Yellow Cab, the two events are expected to generate a total revenue of up to more than US$ 25 million.
